  1. Seth McClung and Bill Hall are not going to net us a #2 starter. Think about it. Let's say this is 06 and we are sellers. Are we going to trade Capuano or Davis for a guy like McClung and a guy like Bill Hall? The ONLY way this is possible is if this mysterious #2 makes about 10 million a year. Meche? Millwood? I don't know what Millwood makes i'm just thinking aloud. I know Texas loves players like Bill Hall and isn't too high on having good pitching.
  2. Wow, and if i remember correctly, THAT is the same .222 hitting Chad Tracy that is fifth in all star voting for catchers. Edit: Oops, that's Snyder that's 5th in all star voting.
  3. Going up to the Blue Jays/Angels game tonight so i'll be listening to Ueck on the way. This team wants to get on a roll and i think Benny will keep us going. Not to mention the offense. Can Prince do it two nights in a row?
  4. I think with Braun you are going to find that it is pretty difficult to compare him to anyone else in the league. But there is ONE thing that he does have in common with some players... Say you are the fan of an opposing team who really doesn't follow the other teams all that much. Say you've been living under a rock for the last year and a half and you have NEVER seen Ryan Braun bat or even knew he existed. If you are flipping on the television mid game to watch your team face the Brewers and you see Braun come up to bat, i can almost gaurantee that you're going to say something to the effect of, "This guy scares the crap outta me." It's the same quality Manny has. It's the same quality Pujols has. And maybe some will disagree with this, but i don't think Prince has it. No matter how hot Prince gets, to me he will always look vulnerable at the plate. But is he great? So far we only have a one year sample, but judging from that: Pros: Hits for average Hits for power (lots of it) Gets hits and even extra base hits on pitches out of the zone Has some speed, can steal bases. Plays with a swagger Despite above statement, has a very positive, team-first attitude which the fans love Cons: Stikes out often Doesn't walk enough Not a solid fielder In my opinion, he's already a very good player. The question is, which of those above traits will change? I think it's pretty obvious that he will get better in the k/bb ratio. Also, this is the first time he has EVER played the outfield and he is getting his practice in at the major league level. No doubt that will improve as well. Hall of Famer? No matter how talented a guy is, you can't ever predict that. Injuries happen, anything can happen. But will he be great. Yes.
  5. Yes. I have been noticing this as well. I hope it doesn't continue, and Rickie maintains his great walking ability while improving his average but it could very well turn out that he is a .220-.250 hitter for his career but always with an OBP .100 higher.
  6. What in the world? Is that some sort of super haiku?
  7. that was definitely a single by hardy either way you slice it. Hudson getting in the way saved him a run. At best, someone lays out for that thing and knocks it down but it's still a single.
  8. Even more evidence of what the league thinks about Braun, IMO. Tremendous amount of respect for a guy who just finished up his first 162 big league games. I had a great feeling about that ninth inning. Maybe it was the home stadium atmosphere. But tonight really just seemed like our night. Even with Bush pitching. Even with Hudson pitching.
  9. Here it is guys. In mid-September we'll be in the heat of a pennant race. Everyone will be ripping the cover off of the ball. We'll look back on May 27th and say, "THAT was the turning point. That's when the season really started." Let's go!
  10. Feeling good about this game. But who comes in for the ninth? Thanks to Gagne, Torres isn't as fresh as he should be.
  11. Yeah, there's a reason the Reds wanted to give Dunn away for Matt Wise. (color that blue) And hey, in case Adam Wainwright happens to be lurking, how about that triple by Braun? Pretty sure that wasn't a mistake pitch.
  12. and now we have to use Torres, that's just great... Yeah there is not much you can do with Gagne right now...
  13. One thing you have to remember about the Giants and a potential trade is that they have an insane amount of good pitching but not too many hitters. This is what i would call a good fit for us. I would only be interested in Cain or Lincecum, but the fact that they have younger unproven guys ready to step up might make it an easier trade on their part.
  14. Some quick Cubs fan quotes! "Who the hell is Brauns agent anyway? 45 mil for 8 years? Thats just over 8 mil a year. While Id kill for that, there are guys with a fraction of Brauns potential making 10-12 mil." Right idea, really really bad math. "His BABIP reveals that Braun is not quite the hitter that he was in his rookie year, and his patience is garbage right now. This move stinks to high heaven for several reasons. It would have been like us giving CPatt a 6 year deal after his one good August." I'll leave that alone, because one of his friends corrected him with this: "That is, quite possibly, the dumbest thing I have ever read on this message board. You do realize that Braun had pretty much the best rookie season in the history of baseball, correct? And that if you look at his minor league numbers/hype that it isn't a fluke? Also, did CP even have a good August? Wasn't his "tear" the first half of 2003 before he blew out his knee in Atlanta?" Finally, there is this: "I think 2008 Braun is a little closer to what we'll see going forward than 2007 Braun. This is what happens when he doesn't OPS 1.400 against LHP. His production probably won't be too much different to Ramirez, but without the positional premium. Essentially, he'll be in that "not quite awesome" tier of outfielders like the ones he's currently close to in OPS, the Carlos Lees and Raul Ibanii of the world." I feel embarrassed that i'm even going to humor this quote, however, even if he does "fail" and only amounts to the talent of a Carlos Lee, we are still going to be paying Geoff Jenkins post-prime money for a guy who should be getting 15 mil per. However, good use of the word Ibanii! One more thing. A Brewer fan on a cubs board said that A. The payroll will eventually be pushed to 100Mil and B. that Mark A has stated he would like to bring in another #1 for the push. Are either of these two statements remotely accurate?
  15. Well, i guess i am in the minority here. I look more at the first sentence than the second. "You make tough pitches, you hold him to singles or get him out." I don't think anyone in the majors wants to be called a singles hitter, even the Juan Pierres of the world might take offense to that. He's implying that if he makes his pitches there's absolutely no way he can hit him for power. I've seen Ryan take lots of bad swings this year but i've also seen him hit some balls that no hitter has business reaching, and for power. You could also argue that pitchers have an advantage over hitters to begin with, and this is obviously true. But then why say, "the thing about HIM..." ? The second sentence seems more like a back-track from his original statement. Yes, i'm reading pretty far into this but does that mean it's not true? No way of knowing. I guess it might help to see the video of this comment, as tone can be the difference. I just think that if he really wanted to compliment him he could have worded that much differently. Oh well.
  16. This was much earlier in Thomas' career, when he was a shortstop. They called him "The Relatively Average Sized Hurt." Oh! THAT Frank Thomas... And that, is, absolutely precious. Thank you.
  17. ESPN - May 12 Cardinals vs. Brewers Recap "The thing about him is if you make tough pitches, you hold him to singles or you get him out," Wainwright said. "You make bad pitches, he hits home runs." - Adam Wainwright Yeah, Adam, or doubles. He has 13 so far, which puts him on pace to break the Brewers single-season record. I think this has a lot more to do with what Ryan does after the home runs than anything. Although, his home run "poses" are nothing compared to those of Griffey jr. or Aramis Ramirez, he does have a certain flair about him. The kid is extremely talented. Stuff like this makes me think back to that post here on Brewerfan a while back in which the poster claimed to know a major league pitcher who said that Ryan Braun was NOT a liked guy. In fact, that particular pitcher's statements about Prince Fielder were almost identical to the one Wainwright made about Braun. I guess we just have a couple of franchise players who can only hit mistake pitches for home runs.
  18. these fans are ten times worse than cubs fans when it comes to cheering lazy fly balls.. ughhh
  19. I like Mike Cameron. I always liked this signing, but i never expected him to have to carry the offense. Gosh almighty, wait until this offense gets more hitters going.. We won't need a pitcher.
  20. Matter of fact, Bob said before the game that Sampson is usually around 87 to 88.. but pitcher previews tend to give players the benefit of the doubt. Just like other teams used to say about Cappy: "He'll get up there around 91, maybe 92 when he needs to."
  21. So Rluz, are you saying that Sampson is usually around 85? I guess it wouldn't surprise me if they "amped" up the gun a little. Them wild eyed country boys sure do love them some good ol' country heat sure as you're born i tell ya.
  22. Benny so far: Velocity: Great Control: Inconsistent, but some of those punch outs were RIGHT on the black. Nice Stuff: Curveball looks great at times and then it looks flat at times. I mean flat by Ben Sheets standards. K's (through 2): 5. Any time he gets that 2:1 K:IP ratio going i think back to Atlanta. Overall: Looking much better than last outing. If he can keep this up we might just be able to get past losing Yo...
  23. I'm all for this. Sure, you would get all the idiotic garbage slinging Cubs fans up here but that is the ONLY negative. Here are the (obvious) positives: 1. More money for Milwaukee and of course the Brewers. You could do whatever you wanted to with this cash, which includes adding it to the payroll! Imagine the anger from a Cubs fan's perspective. We just spent 81 home games worth of tickets, food, and merchandise at Miller Park and now the Brewers have a new ace who beats us every time out. Excellent. 2. Every game against the Cubs would be a home game. Enough said. 3. Later in the season, when the Cubs are playing another NL Central team, we can show up and root for whoever benefits us the most. So the Cubs "home field advantage" would vary greatly. 4. It gives us baseball pretty much every day of the week! I don't care who's playing, that's great. That said, i don't see how anyone in that organization could be stupid enough to want to play all 81 games in Miller Park. So i don't think it's even a real possibility. But i would welcome them, or any team, to come play for 20 or so if they had to. Heck... Bring Cleveland back, that was fun.
  24. That play looked gruesome. But after he got up and started walking around his body language said to me, "Well that's strange, it doesn't even hurt." He DID give up some runs the inning after the injury but who knows if that has anything to do with the injury. I'd be surprised if he missed his next start. But if there IS any sort of pain or discomfort there, i wouldn't at all be opposed to sitting him for a start.
