This is quite interesting. I'm sure there have been eyeballs on him in his rehab starts, and he's had enough of an MLB resume to attract interest as long as his health is confirmed (four rehabs should prove that). I would think if he's dealt, it would be as a sweetener to acquire immediate help, but that would be tricky since you're making a contender-to-contender deal. But if we've learned anything in recent deadlines it's that: 1) There are always surprises, and 2) Preller wants to acquire everyone.

Contreras (before this series) seemed to be coming out of the funk a little. He's been drawing walks pretty much all year, and at least has shown the tendency to hit behind runners. I think these are the main reasons why he's usually still at #2. Someone like Durbin looks like a fit there, but for a kid who has had success hitting 7 & 8 in his first taste of MLB, often the smart money says leave him be. No denying though, it was an ugly series for him at the plate.

Glad the season series is over. This Marlins team is a major pain in the arse, and some of the ball-strike calls didn't make it any easier. Kudos to Ashby for overcoming the Miami bats & two umpires to throw a scoreless 7th. Felt bad for Durbin. struck out (iirc) twice to begin his day, then in the 1st & 3rd w/one out didn't want (understandably, I guess) to go deep in the count again. Looked to go the other way, and got a first pitch that was perfect for that very thing. Pulled-in INF so they had little range to either side. One-hopper right at the 2B. Until the last couple innings it was that kind of day. I've never seen anything like Chourio, in that he can be so very dangerous, get his hits & yet still be so incomplete as a player. Still chases waaay too much, but easily our most productive guy right now. It's like viewing a Rembrandt that hasn't had the borders painted in yet. I think the long-term deal we signed him to might be the best money the team has spent since Inking Dalton & Bamberger after the '77 season. Andrew Vaughn is hitting the ball hard while striking out only six times in just short of 50 PAs. Guys have sometimes simply gotten hot after joining a new team, but boy would it be nice if something was actually unlocked here. Alumni weekend is over, right? Burn those caps. I'm done feeling like I'm pulling for Juwan Howard & Bo Schembechler.

When does Arnold start to receive some criticism
Jim French Stepstool replied to brewers888's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
That's been the trend in recent years among some fans, regardless of the sport. There's the team that wins it all, the runner-up, and maybe two or three others. Everyone else is 'mediocre', or 'sucks'. -

Dude, I salute you for being a passionate fan, I really do. But I've been on this board for quite some time & the above doesn't even come close to describing the folks on here. You have a vision of how this thing should be run. The organization & most of the people on here have a different one. Dat's life. -

But.....but.....Ryan Dempster & Kevin Millahhhhh didn't fawn over it obsessively. It didn't happen on the last day of July, with the clock running. It didn't MOVE THE NEEDLE!!!!!!! -

Oh, but wouldn't the world be an easier place to live in if baseball players were conveniently shoehorned into various categories. There's the "That's IT? Wow, Attanasio is a real cheapass" group. In the next department over, we have the "They should've done more, we need at least TWO bats!!!!" guys. A couple floors up, with the ESPN & MLB Network cameras rolling, we can peruse the "GOING FOR IT!!!!!" players, followed by a trip to the top floor & the "MOVE THE NEEDLE!!!" merchandise. Truth be known they've been one of, if not the best run organization you can find anywhere. And those who don't think we spend prospect capital haven't been paying attention. But one thing this team will never do, even with a deep system, is overpay in a trade. It would be an easy mistake to make when you're competing at the trade deadline with a lot of folks who will gladly empty out the upper levels of their prospect list because they can just write checks to fill holes every off-season. What I'd love to see, is some of these big-market FO's have to make decisions while living in the world the Brewers live in. -
Well, at least the "we need a bat!!! we need TWO bats!!!!!" mantra doesn't apply tonight. Not saying I don't want the offense upgraded but the reason we lost tonite wasn't that we didn't score eight, it's because we gave up seven. Eleven hits can usually lead to a win from this team but not tonight. I thought we chased too much, but it probably looked worse than it was in comparison because Miami was ridiculously good in their plate discipline, for the second game in a row. It was as if they hopped into a Delorean & had a future screen shot of every pitch 10 seconds before it was thrown, so they could look at the location & decide if they wanted to lay off. RBI double notwithstanding, Turang needs to be better on both ends. Critical error & two flat out lousy ABs. What this team can accomplish hasn't been changed one iota by the last two games. Oversimplification I guess, but PLAY BETTER.

I really thought it would be Siegler leaving instead of Black. So Monasterio is basically the backup 1B & SS (at least for now) which is a little bit of a strange combo. Of course the roster will probably look a little different come next weekend. @markedman5, Siegler has never played 1B in pro ball.

I don't know if I buy the reports about their searching for a Haase replacement. But I don't want to deal either of our young backstops for those two. In that case I'd much rather roll with Haase & concentrate on Castro alone. Jeffers would be a nice backup piece but there are bigger priorities IMO.

O'Hearn might be the closest thing to a "move the needle" or "impact bat" (or whatever the latest cliche is) type of acquisition they might actually have a chance of pulling off. I believe it when I read that Arizona is asking for the moon for Suarez. I also think the ask for him may tick down a little next week but still would be too rich for our taste. I love the Castro-Hairston comp. I'd certainly at least explore what Minnesota is thinking there. It wouldn't surprise me if we A) wind up acquiring Kiner-Falefa and B) see it result in a hailstorm of protest.

It's not significant because they both failed, but I thought Ashby was worse than Mears today. Go back to the point where Ramirez was behind 0-2 in the seventh. From that point on, through the Stowers AB (about 12 pitches) Miami's plate discipline was off-the-charts good. Guaranteed Mears got strike three on a handful of those throws many times this year & last. That whole sequence was magnified by our lack of ability to do the same but more than that we just didn't hit today. Reminded me of the middle game in Seattle except Quantrill wasn't pitching at the same level. Would've been interesting if Durbin came up with a big hit to cut into the lead in his last AB, but again, a chase for strike three. Then Siegler Ks in his AB while seeing exactly one strike. They out plate-disciplined us big time. Teams don't usually do that. If I'm Miami I'm thinking I have a nice core. Black vs Siegler is becoming an interesting little game within the game for the last spot when Frelick returns (looks to me like a healthy lead for Black right now).

Even when they make moves & rebuild Miami always seems to have young talent that keeps you from taking anything for granted when playing them. Kyle Stowers can do a lot of damage & Xavier Edwards seems to be a pain in the neck whenever we play them. There will be wailing & gnashing of teeth on here if we fail to hit our old friend Janson Junk, who's actually been pitching pretty well.

Quero is a sweetener. He goes with Dinges to Minnesota for Brock Stewart.😛

I want to throw some scraps toward Tyler Black. First off, he walks as a PH in the 1-0 game, a good call since Ortiz didn't look good at the plate, didn't finish off his ABs & if there was a walk to be had Black was much more likely to extract it. Today he pulls a double, then a hard-hit ball going the other way for a single. Also a scoop at 1B on a far-from-easy hop that I never expected him to come up with.
-
He's in one of those things he gets into where he chases a LOT of pitches that aren't strikes. You can tell he is really uncomfortable because he tried for the bunt hit w/the runner on 3rd & two outs. I actually have no problem with him doing that if it's there, but it was vs a RHP, plus it wasn't an ultra-critical run at the time--I believe we were up 3 runs & it wasn't late in the game. Doing it there tells me he isn't picking the ball up at all. Fortunately he's still finding a base hit here & there but he needs to stop chasing & figure out how to get in some more favorable counts.

Yes it is. But welcome to the world of fandom, where a loss after winning 11 games in a row seems to necessitate a reminder of that. From the comments in this thread, some seem to think there's some sort of silver lining to this game in that it's going to remind the FO that we could use an offensive upgrade. But I'm pretty sure they realize that, even if we had won this game 6-1. The drafting, scouting & player development has been impressive, leading to a large storehouse of prospect capital. There are different directions they can go AFA where to upgrade, and the game of 'chicken' with other contenders as to how high you want to go to acquire someone is always fascinating. It'll be one hell of an interesting week.
