  1. OTOH one could say SD is playing a little better than us right now. Other than their last (meaningless) game they hadn't lost to anyone not named Dodgers recently. And with what the Mets have been going through, maybe even the shorter flight looks appealing. I think a taxed staff might rather face us than what the Pads run out there. Debatable either way, really.
  2. Quick thought: Do the Mets really WANT to win & go to San Diego?
  3. I still see ATL winning game two, but that's certainly a factor.
  4. Like you said it's baseball, so no guarantees. But I wanted to avoid Arizona, and the prospect of playing someone coming off two games AND having to travel just cements that.
  5. It did seem odd, and it didn't. Before Sunday he hadn't thrown in about a week. I can see wanting to get him out there, but I'm sure they didn't like seeing the outing stretched to 26 pitches. Now with him throwing 40 more today, you'd think he can't be available tomorrow. But after what we just saw, can anything be ruled out? I have a difficult time seeing ATL losing game 2. Those fans with the stupid OMG signs must be building up a lot of frequent flyer miles.
  6. I'd have gone with Pena by a whisker, but you really can't go wrong with Made either. I don't ever remember being this pumped about the depth of position-player talent at the rookie ball/low-A level. If Bitonti can get the swing-and-miss a little more under control as he matures, look out. I mean, look out anyway, but.................
  7. I know he'd be ineligible for the post season, but are there any rumors out there about either team signing Rowdy Tellez just for tomorrow?
  8. Looking at it again, you're right that Brunner missed his block. But almost simultaneously Walker was hit by a defender crashing in from the left edge, which is a little embarrassing since both TEs & Acker were lined up on that side as the play started. Nelson & Nowakowski double-teamed what appeared to be a stand-up DE leaving the outside guy untouched. Probably a non-factor if the play develops more quickly than it did, but it didn't. I was wrong about the right-side penetration being the problem.
  9. Anyone who sits today would have two days off & some guys might not like to sit that long AFA maintaining their timing at the plate, so the lineup might take that into account. On the surface, pulling Adames halfway through sounds like a decent idea.
  10. ..........And even though I have no great hatred for him, going 6-0 vs David Stearns would be kinda fun
  11. They've failed in these situations a # of times now, and it seems a good percentage of the time its due to defenders crashing from the edges, not people getting a push from the middle. He talks about getting the play blocked. Well, if the play hits the line more quickly as opposed to running shotgun the chances of edges disrupting it are compromised greatly. It is what it is. They're down to their #2 QB. The lack of QB runs was predictable given how they don't want him exposed; having him sneak from under center is I suspect something they're just as reluctant to do. What slayed me was both TEs & the back brought in to block (Acker) were all set up on the left side. The penetration came from the right side. Shocking.
  12. I think three things combined to change the game around. 1)You really had USC in a miserable place late in the half, and putting up one more score just before halftime could've been huge, considering you received to start the 2nd half. 2) The fumbled punt, and 3) If I'm a coach and my opponent is looking to pick up 4th & a foot I know I'd be in a tough position to stop it, but my hopes would be buoyed at least a little if the opposition lined up in a shotgun. Not that I was particularly surprised because we've done that before. Overall, this staff needs more time before they're deemed a failure. But there are instances, including today, that point directly at some real issues regarding discipline & smart play. I thought they played hard today, they're playing more physically than before, and given the talent they faced at the offensive skill positions I felt the back end competed pretty well most of the time. It was no surprise the defense would run out of gas near the end given that the offense isn't exactly built to keep them off the field.
  13. Really looked to me like SC got the early score & convinced themselves they could mail the rest of the game in. But as poorly as the Trojans played in the 1st half, gotta hand it to UW. O-line is physical, defensive backfield is mostly holding their own against some very impressive talent & as for Hills---he impressed me the first three weeks, but took it up another notch today. It looks like SC just can't block the guy. And it's great to see Locke get off to the good start & play with confidence. Lean on the offensive line in the 2nd half, make them put another defender in the box--they already started gambling late in the half w/a run blitz or two--and keep pressure off Locke to HAVE to make tougher throws.
  14. I don't like the idea of either being in the OF, especially in a playoff scenario. But Miller has been out there, albeit briefly. And they've been throwing Black out there a bit in the 2nd half of Nashvilles' season. I agree that neither are great choices. But if Frelick has to be shelved the pickings are pretty slim. I didn't consider Rodriguez. But he would fit the organizational profile of someone that can do the job with the glove, & he's played all 3 OF positions. Might be overmatched at the plate, but then again the guy strikes out, like, hardly ever so he would at least give himself a chance. So yeah, maybe.
  15. The problem w/losing Frelick (if that's the case) is you had four really good OFs, which gives you some flexibility. If you want to hit for Mitchell or Frelick vs a tough LHP you can still be strong defensively. And make no mistake, there could be times next month where you might want to do that, even though Mitchell seems to be getting better vs lefties. Hoping for the best, but if Frelick is shelved it's going to be interesting to see what they do about replacing his spot. Hicklen underwhelmed. Capra has played a bit of OF, as has Miller. Maybe we see Black yet again.
  16. Sometimes players have an option to extend a contract an extra year after they have a crappy season, right? Are they "screwing the organization?" No thanks. I will say though, that's an interesting picture of Rowdy. Kinda looks like a Thanksgiving Day float.
  17. Basically our position-player shuttle consisted of Tyler Black & some AAAA types. Since Black never caught hold I guess Collins is the best option due to the versatility. I'm a fan; I just wish the few ABs he's gotten looked a little less------I don't know if 'overmatched' is the right word. I'd like to see him get a few trips to the plate this weekend.
  18. Did Angel Hernandez pass away & I didn't hear about it? Because it sure seemed like Manny Gonzalez called balls & strikes today in his memory. Wow was he terrible. Montas' last outing aside, it looks like both starters we picked up have earned their keep, and with Rae & (maybe) Myers backsliding a bit it's very timely. In closing out our sked vs the NL Central, my closing comments re the division are: Pete Crow-Armstrong resembles Dobie Gillis, and Oniel Cruz, if you glance sideways, looks a little like Aunt Esther from "Sanford & Son". Apologies to those of you that aren't fans of classic TV.
  19. And relative to pitch count, Ortiz throws 23 or 24 pitches in the 1st inning & never even comes close to that total again. Almost as if we went into a mini-vacation after the Bauers HR. For us, putting pressure on pitchers & going deep into counts needs to be a constant, a habit. Grinding in the 1st inning & then taking a mental break from that for the next five won't get it done next week.
  20. That was nothing more than giving him the chance for 200 strikeouts. I think over 25% of his pitches tonite were to the last four hitters he faced. It's like he jumps short hurdles all evening, then when getting to the point of completing 5 innings suddenly there's a twelve-foot high wall. It's happened before, and I think a lot of it is between the ears.
  21. He pitched very well overall, but tonight was yet another piece of evidence as to why Peralta is no "ace". There are a lot of characteristics you can throw out there to define an ace, but to me one would be someone who 1) with two outs & the bases clear does not walk Yasmani Grandal & Nick Yorke back-to-back, and 2) after both those walks cross the plate, doesn't stand in the dugout with a smile on his face because he has 200 strikeouts for the year. Regardless of how meaningless the game is, there are plenty of pitchers that wouldn't be happy about that sequence & I just wish he was one of them. He's set up to throw game one & I think he SHOULD be. I just hated how he finished up that 5th inning.
  22. Hudson not responding the way they wanted has opened the door for Milner, and right now he looks like a much better than 50-50 shot to be in the BP next week in the "closer for the starter" role in the 5th-6th inning. Since giving up the HR to the LHH in the Rockies series he's actually located well. Sometimes IL stints are of the 'phantom' type, and sometimes the break actually is for a legit reason & has positive results.
  23. So, should the White Sox bring in a member of the '62 Mets to throw out the first pitch this week because, well, you know...........
  24. Pretty good comps. The intriguing thing is that he's where he is right now with large chunks of time taken out of his development track.
  25. That was a pretty good presser. Besides mentioning how the booing got everyones' attention he talked about the team learning that you can't coast (I'm sure they knew that, but there's nothing like an 8-0 visual aid to pound it home). Maybe a veteran team would hear the booing & respond with a mental middle finger, This is a good group to have their sensibilities jolted, I think. He also talked about Montas tipping his pitch grip to runners on 2nd. If true that's pretty bad. Also his failure to back up 3rd base. You really have to wonder about how high Mitchells' ceiling is . On his second AB, coming up against a lefty, running the count full & then hitting one--hard--to the opposite field was to me one of the most impressive ABs of the game. OTOH, trying to steal on a 3-0 count, even if you AREN'T down by a few runs, is curious to say the least. Damn, Sanchez had a bad game behind the dish. Really bad. Apparently, any 'double tick' you hear is a foul tip. Bat to glove, glove to shin guard, cup to shin guard, mask to beer vendor-------Maybe we want to revisit that not being reviewable. At the end of the day a real "thanks, I needed that" win.
