  1. I still think he's pretty good. No, not 4-0 with a 1-point-whatever ERA good. The biggest negative I see, is outings like today---fifteen, sixteen outs---may be the norm at this point in his career and we have a lot of starters doing that right now. At this rate by July the BP will be taxed more than a California homeowner.
  2. With the key outs on the base paths & surprisingly poor defense this week (and the railing on Capras' nonexistent offense), despite all that this is a 4-3 road trip if not for back-to-back poor performances by Alexander. Ashby being out & Hudson earning a demotion---if just one of those two were 'right' it makes quite a difference. Hudson had a nice clean, quick inning in Nashville. Good sign. Agree, Yoho could be key. And I would love to see a solid week of save opps for Megill, who's troubles might be due to the sporadic workload. And maybe Payamps figured things out this weekend.
  3. Little-used reserve Chris Hodges has committed to Montana State, where he'll at least have a slight chance of more playing time. He'll have one year left, or two, or thirteen. I don't think anyone knows anymore. He stuck at UW for a long time w/little chance of receiving minutes, toiling with the scout team, and for that he deserves kudos. I hope he sees the floor there. Old news, but for anyone who didn't hear this, Daniel Freitag is going to Buffalo of the MAC.
  4. The thing about Quintana, if it was any other starter approaching 100 pitches in the 5th, it would be a litany of "C.mon, attack!!!! Throw strikes!!!", accusations of nibbling, and the feeling of impending doom w/all the baserunners allowed & deep counts. But with him, you've seen him do this nine thousand times before & you just trust the guy. It's amazing how he refuses to give in & finds a way. I thought StL actually put up some really good ABs against him, too. Today it came down to several times where he had to make a pitch, and made it just about every time. It's scary when you watch Chourio every day & see how he's such a work in progress, yet leads the team in dingers & is driving in a little under one run per game. Such an impressive talent.
  5. I'm all but certain they ARE looking around, talking to people. Whether or not there's a good deal out there no one can say, unless you know the names being bantered about. I would suspect that if it takes Yophery Rodriguez to get Priester, then people we're calling bring up Areinamo or one of the Carolina INF'S & that's where it ends. I think if there's an acquisition it'll be someone most here have heard of, who we hope has something left in the tank. Hell, Durbin was a solid but not elite prospect & he was half of the haul for one of the games' best closers (at least at the time the deal was made).
  6. Berry leaving was very disappointing to me. Financial reality being what it is, I suspect any attractive coaching/managerial talent in the organization will be hard to keep.
  7. Everyone points to the elephant in the room, which is Capra hitting under .100. And they're right. It's when the subject of alternatives is mentioned when the problems crop up. Monasterio apparently isn't being viewed as an option, which is understandable because you're downgrading your defense for a marginally better bat at best. And I don't think at this time a guy like Pratt who has nineteen games above the high-A level is the answer either. What's really hurting is Capras' start combined with Dunn doing pretty much the same thing, along with Ortiz hitting .170. That's the killer. And Tyler Black never developed as a 3B (and is hurt anyway). And for all we know Mike Boeve might be mashing at AAA right now had he not been shelved. Or maybe Wilkin if he hadn't taken a ball to the face a year ago. It's tough when all those alternatives come up snake eyes.
  8. "..........activities not associated with their school team, school, conference or the WIAA........." What I wouldn't give for the college NIL rules to be along those same lines. The first time I saw Kaitlin Clark in the State Farm ad, wearing her Iowa uni, I thought "OK, we screwed THIS up royally". Born too early. My presence as a JV HS catcher HAD to be worth a few Kitt's burgers, at least.🤔
  9. It's hard to find shiny nuggets in this stretch, but Hoskins is hot--last AB notwithstanding--and Chourio finished tonite with two hard-hit balls. Those are two RHH. That could bode well going forward. And Collins had two good ABs. His walk after falling behind 0-2 might've been even more impressive than the hit in the 9th. Maybe they'll change their organizational strategy, but I just don't see them swapping a guy like Capra, who is right now about an 0.5 on a scale of 1-10 offensively, for someone like Monasterio, who might be a 3 if he was up here but is quite a bit worse defensively, especially as a SS. What makes it an issue is Dunn didn't hit either, and now Ortiz is following suit. Unless they find someone on the cheap, it looks to me like the best hope for a replacement is to pray that Pratt goes on a major tear at Biloxi, enough that he can't be ignored.
  10. A great point that IMO too many are ignoring. I've said it before.......if you're going to ask your BP to get 10, 11, 12 outs every night--tonite it was more than that if you go nine--you can't have only 2 LHP in the BP if one of them is named Tyler Alexander. Flip side, there aren't many other options with Ashby out & Hudson missing the strike zone. Personally, I'd rather see Jay up here until one of the other two returns.
  11. That's the only thing I've ever heard about him AFA particular strengths; that he can defend. Two years at Minnesota before going to Tulsa. Maybe the best thing about him is that it keeps you from throwing Kinziger to the wolves as a top backcourt sub if he isn't quite ready.
  12. From what I've heard Bieliauskas has not one, but two agents. If that means he's twice as good as everyone else out there, sign me up. He's 19, so room to grow/develop. Battle for bench minutes between him, Greppi & Garlock looks pretty wide open.
  13. Some of the talk on here is centered around comfort level at a particular position, and there's merit to that. In that vein, I think moving a platinum-glove 2B who's hitting around .340-.350 to SS, even if he's played there before, is not a good idea. I know they considered it in March, but hopefully the bit of discomfort he felt put the permanent brakes on that.
  14. Cameron is out of options, which means he'd be exposed if he's the guy to go when Perkins returns. Otherwise yeah, I'd have made that move yesterday. Unless they'd consider Mitchell doing a reset at AAA.
  15. Yeah, it looked all along like Collins would be in Milwaukee until Perkins is ready, but no one---including the organizational braintrust, I'm sure---foresaw what Cameron is doing since joining Nashville. Wondering what his status is AFA options remaining?
  16. Sure. If he displays the same movement & command he's shown earlier he can be effective vs anyone. I just think there are many LHH we're going to be seeing that you WANT to make face a guy who throws from the same side, and with the heavy BP usage we've seen I just don't know if Alexander is someone who can be used 2-3 times a week (not that they'd even want him in such a role). But you're right about Hudson. He isn't commanding his stuff and he needs to, probably more than most since his FB is around 90 or so. Ashby being out really hamstrings them in that sense.
  17. That makes the most sense IMO.
  18. If Hudson is sent down, I'm not nuts about the idea of Alexander being the only LHP in the pen besides Koenig. Part of me wonders if there is a deal being hammered out for Payamps involving a combo of lotto tickets, and if not then a phantom IL stint. The risk in a DFA or trade is that he's been very, very good when 'right', including last season after an early rough stretch. And being out of options.......I just don't see a DFA quite yet. Could be wrong, but I think Henderson stays. As long as people keep performing as starters I could see a six-man when Myers returns.
  19. Considering he high BP usage I don't see them going with only Koenig from the left side. Not to defend Hudson, but I don't know if he goes anywhere as long as Ashby is out (early May?) unless they want to add someone like Jay. You may be right re Anderson. Hope you aren't.
  20. I'm not usually a big "feel" guy regarding who I think is going to win a close game. But I really thought we were done tonight after Turang singled in the 6th. One out, tying run on, good speed, Chourio & Yelich coming up. Two pitches later, inning over. And neither ball hit hard. That was a sad sequence. Gotta hand it to Patrick though. And Anderson continues to impress.
  21. The way I look at it, this is the first time in 18 months that he's started, went through his routine, and then went out & started again. This will probably take longer than any of us would like & hopefully the end result will be worth it.
  22. When leading, I think Capra as a defensive replacement is going to be a regular thing. Outside of a hiccup or two, the defense at 3B has been very solid, so this is a roll of the dice in that regard. I guess you can say that they're going from a R/L platoon to an offense/defense one. I'm just glad that as this whole thing unfolded going back to March, they never implemented the idea of Turang moving to SS.
  23. Priester, Patrick, Alexander (sans Monday), Quintana........... Gold star to Chris Hook & this front office in light of all the health issues to starters. And guard the key to that pitching lab.
  24. Both followed close behind by the Bill Schroeders' "Not even close".
  25. Not the greatest of track records when facing a relative unknown. But if he's really only 145, I think a strong dose of off-tackle runs should wear him down.
