  1. Congrats on the weight loss. I found out I was diabetic in mid-March, have cut out a ton from my diet, and am down from 278 to 250 (I’m 6’8”). Needed to shed some weight, but at this point I’m concerned mainly with my A1C. I know the two are linked, so hopefully the weight loss helps. Just on medication right now, no insulin. Hoping to stay that way or get off meds entirely. Wake up call.
  2. Watched The Stranger on Netflix, a good binge.

In Racine...Wells Brothers and Derangos In Kenosha...Luigis and Casa Capri I’m also a big fan of Rockys, wish they had one in So Ill!
  4. Let’s go Blues!!!
  5. That had to be deflating for the Wild. I think the Blues take it in 5, with MIN taking one of the STL games. MIN has stifling defense, and Dubnyk is kryptonite for the Blues. Hoping to get through this series unscathed and take it to the Blackhawks. The return of Sobotka can't be undersold for STL, that is a huge addition for the playoffs.
  6. I would think one of those currency conversion places could help. If it is out of date, I'd try my luck at a coin shop. I can't imagine it would be worth a ton, but would be rid of it. I brought money back from UAE when I deployed, thought it would be cool. It wasn't.
  7. Or you could just get a Gold ETF that tracks the price of gold. Agreed. I didn't read back, I thought they were discussing physically owning precious metals.
  8. If you are not buying in "bulk", scrap silver coins are easy to unload. If you are not paying numismatic value for them, scrap eagles are basically smaller versions of bars. If you're going to buy 16 ounces at a time, I'd just buy the bar. Silver doesn't typically reach value where liquidating individual coins makes sense. Bars are easier to store as well. If you are just buying an ounce here and there, buy scrap coins. Everyone coin shop will have them.
  9. I went to the Winter Classic last weekend. I always said that if it was ever in STL, I would get tickets, regardless of cost. They were not cheap, but the experience was so worth it. A baseball stadium is a lousy place to watch a game, but the atmosphere was awesome. The alumni game was fun too, and I was able to watch Gretzky and Hull skate in person. Well worth price of admission.
  10. The answer could always be Alaska. Seasonal employment with the fishing industry, or year round with the pipeline...they both pay very well. Plus there is the dividend to consider. Always could try your luck working at Denali.
  11. Some may disagree with me, but the whole "start in the mail room" thing still can work. I'm not sure what the statistical proof to the adage "it's easier to find a job if you already have one" is, but there is merit to the statement. Many companies prefer to promote from within, and offer some positions only internally. If you find a place that you like, getting any job there may be the foot in the door that you need to get the job you actually want.
  12. You're right, staffing agencies, for all intents and purposes, are worthless. They get a HUGE pool of applicants, some serious, some looking for unemployment (as was mentioned above). They don't typically turn people down, as I believe the recruiters are paid at least somewhat on the number of people they sign. Really, your only shot at getting something out of them is if it is right after you sign up. Give it a week and there are 100 newer people, and you are old news (if you were ever news in the first place). It's basically a live version of monster.com. If you are going to seek help, get a headhunter. At least those guys have specific jobs to hire, and they benefit from placing the right people.
  13. I don't really view it as a trap. They are ruling out those who are out of their range. I wish more companies did it. I recently did a great phone interview with a company who had a position that was intriguing. I was referred for it, hit it off with the hiring manager, and they were ready to offer...at 50% of my current salary. It was a waste of time, they had salary commensurate with experience in the listing. What they meant was, entry level salary for an experienced professional. I'm friends with a few recruiters, and they have said that companies are getting unrealistic in their salary structure with the new economy. They want $100k people for $50k. Those that are desperate jump on the positions, and then burn out quickly; as the ratio of work:pay is not worth it.
  14. JJ, I've used them in the past, I'm not in WI, so I'm guessing my guy won't be all that useful to you. These days, I think you almost need one, or a recruiter. So many job boards and online applications lead to a black hole. I've found a recruiter so useful in at least learning about and getting interviews for opportunities. I work for the gov't, so I feel you on getting somewhere that actually "pays" you. I just haven't found the right one yet. Good luck, if you are looking for something in the STL area, I'd be happy to PM you the guy's info. Rob
  15. My sister graduated with her JD a few years ago, and ran into similar problems. She decided to pursue a job in her undergrad major (Econ), and got the boost of the JD to get her in the door with the Federal Reserve. She has been a bank examiner since, and recently transferred to a new branch of the government. She doesn't get to use her JD, but she used it to get a pretty good job. My younger cousin just finished his JD in Florida, he is ambulance chasing, I'm pretty sure.
  16. When I went through my unemployment, I found that hotels were always hiring. The pay stinks, and you work a lot of nights, but it is a relatively high turnover industry. Have you tried picking up with a landscaping service?
