  1. Yes control was a problem for Marmol, but IMO it was more a lack of moxie. He's a converted position player with an amazing arm, so he still learning what it means to pitch. On the days he does not have his best stuff, he doesn't just struggle, he gets lit up. It also seemed that he was tough as nails the first time or 2 through the order, but lacked the experience to adjust to get thru the order the 3rd time. That being said, he sure made the Brewers look pretty inept when he faced them. He's got a chance to be something special in a couple of years. Cubs trading away another Dontrelle Willis?
  2. Thanks R, you've made up my mind for me. I'm coming up on 1,000 posts, and was thinking maybe I'd just stop at 1,000, and go on to something else more mature and relevant, even though this site is so great. But now I'm sure. That post tells me it'll 1,000 and out for me. Only 4 more to go.
  3. I'm not a stat guy. Is 1.25 whip good or bad? I'm not being a wise guy, I really do not know.
  4. I'm not denying those facts at all. Sheets' control is wonderful. All I'm saying is that someone a lot smarter than me kept trotting Ryan out there for 5,386 innings. Want to call it average control? Sure. Below average control? I'd take that. No control - wrong.
  5. Interesting choice of words. Nolan Ryan - Hall of Fame pitcher, played 27 years in the bigs, with 324 wins, 5,000 strikeouts and a career whip of 1.25. And all that with no control. As I have stated many times before. BFN -- Tough room.
  6. If you're talking pure tools, Sheets and Nuegebauer had an abundance. However, Gallardo's ability to be a pitcher, and just plain get people out is as good as I've seen at this stage of his development in some time.
  7. Honu 7, Beach Boys 1. Cain 0 for 5. Ford, Thatcher and Hinton DNP. Both Ford and Cain are hitting in the low .100's now, but beware the small sample size. Their first extended season will be a good learning experience. A very wise man once told me that being served a piece of humble pie every now and then is healthy. www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/scores/honu_beachboys_10-8.html
  8. Saturday, North Shore wins 5-4. Thatcher strikes out 4 in 3 innings of shut out ball. Hinton lit up for 4 runs in the ninth. Ford 0 for 4 with 3 k's, Cain idle. www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/scores/honu_beachboys_10-7.html
  9. Pretty expensive greens fees. Who do they think they are, Bushwood?
  10. Yep, looks like it can't move either way from 7.
  11. Yankees leaving Columbus suprises me. If I recall correctly, they had been there a long time.
  12. Great stuff. That must have been a lot of fun putting it together. As I reported in another thread, reoprts here in Texas are that Padilla is a real locker room cancer, so we'd need to proceed with caution. This guy seems to have a real problem with booze and needs to clean up his life before I'd be an enabler and dump a load of money and security on him. Pitching bereft Texas does not want to resign him, and he has been real productive for them this year. I do love the idea of signing Valentin, and if that does not work out, Barajas would be an equally solid alternative.
  13. Outstanding job Mass! Thank you ever so much for the link reports. It sure makes the summer fill up with baseball.
  14. Good call Igor. Get rid of a solid, veteran, professional hitter so you can rush a prospect? I'm not sure which part of that equation I dislike more.
  15. Listless performance by the Stars so far tonite. Down 3-0 in the 8th.
  16. Congrats Stars! Former Brewer farmhand Noochie Varner hits into a double play to squash any idea of a rally in the 9th. Now on to the Biscuits!
  17. I thought they said Lil Ben for game 5.
  18. Cool. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
  19. Pogokat, you've mentioned that you think Gillespie will skip low A. Please expand further on why you think this will happen. Here's a couple of factors to be considered against that happening. 1st, it's just not that common. Rushing prospects is rarely the way to go in development. If "can't miss" guys like Weeks, Fielder and Braun played low A, why would we expect Gillespie to skip? 2nd, he did not get promoted mid season this year, a promotion that is often a sign that a guy is ready to handle the fast track. I agree with you that he was capable of being promoted this year and quite frankly earned a bump, but many have specualted that the current OF in WV probably blocked his move. So if he was to go straight to Brevard next year, those same guys will be there. Who's he going to bump off of that roster? I agree with you that he'll play at Brevard next year at some point, so I am looking forward to your argument that he should skip low A all together.
  20. Brad Nelson back from the dead. What a great thing to happen. I hope he's not been buried so deep in the org. charts that he can't work his way back up.
  21. Moonlight Graham topped that record.
  22. I guess the weather report was the reason Inman started yestersday instead of Garrison. That would have been something if his last start would have been washed out and he missed the ERA title. All in all, I thought WV played really well this year and has several really intriguing prospects. I look forward to seeing how long Inman, Salome and Cain stay in Brevard next year. Will they could advance to Huntsville mid year or maybe they stay and put another rush on the playoffs in Brevard? Should be a fun group to watch.

  24. Mike Jones went there last week as well.
