Final: Huntsville 2, Birmingham (White Sox) 0 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Jeffress and Gamel Power Stars to Win Second Inning Swing the Difference By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars Jeremy Jeffress and two relievers combined on a six-hit shutout, as Huntsville blanked Birmingham 2-0 Monday night in the opener of a five-game set at Regions Park. The Stars improved to 27-29 in the second half and 68-58 overall, while the Barons slipped to 27-28 in the second half and 67-58 overall. The Stars recorded their eighth shutout win of the season and their first since July 24 at Carolina. Barons' starter Kyle McCulloch retired the side in order in the first inning before Angel Salome, named as the Southern League Hitter of the Week earlier in the day, led off the second inning and scored on Mat Gamel's home run, his 19th of the season. Gamel has hit home runs in back-to-back games for the first time since doing it in three straight games at Mobile from May 28-30. Gamel's long ball was the only extra-base hit of the contest, as the two teams combined for 16 singles. Jeffress gave up back-to-back singles with one out in the first before retiring Javier Castillo and Brandon Allen to end the inning. He stranded a runner in each of the next two innings and was aided by a line drive double play to end the fourth and by catcher Martin Maldonado, who threw out Robert Valido trying to steal third base to end the fifth inning. Jeffress walked four, struck out four and set down the last four hitters he faced to earn his first win at the double-A level. David Johnson threw a scoreless seventh inning before singles by Robert Valido and Miguel Negron opened the eighth inning. Victor Mercedes advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt but the rally was squashed when Ricardo Nanita lined out to Johnson, who threw to second base to double off Negron. Juan Sandoval took over in the ninth and set down the side in order to record his 17th save. McCulloch, who gave up 13 runs, 11 earned, on 14 hits over 4 1/3 innings in his prior start, kept the Stars blanked over the next four innings and departed after allowing only one other runner to advance as far as second base. He gave up seven hits, walked one and fanned two but fell to 7-11. Kanekoa Texeira followed with two shutout frames, despite giving up three singles and a walk, before John Lujan blanked the Stars in the ninth. The series continues Tuesday night with right-hander Donovan Hand taking the mound for Huntsville against Barons' southpaw Aaron Poreda. Coverage begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. *** Link while active, text follows: By DAVID MORRISON Birmingham News staff writer Barons starter Kyle McCulloch had only one bad inning against the Huntsville Stars on Monday. But it cost him the game. After retiring the first three Stars hitters, McCulloch gave up a single to Angel Salome to lead off the second inning. Then, on an 0-2 pitch, Mat Gamel took McCulloch deep to right-center to give Huntsville a 2-0 lead it didn't relinquish. Center fielder Miguel Negron climbed the wall to try and bring Gamel's home run back, but he came up short. "I thought the ball was going to be on the warning track," Negron said. "I was really close." McCulloch kept the Stars' hitters at bay for the rest of the game, scattering seven hits over six innings and forcing four double plays. He was coming off one of his worst outings of the year, when he gave up 13 runs on 14 hits in 4 1/3 innings against Tennessee last Wednesday. "He did a nice job mentally after getting beaten up in his last start," pitching coach J.R. Perdew said. "He made one mistake, a ball out over the plate, and the guy hit it." The Barons had trouble getting anything going against Stars starter Jeremy Jeffress, in only his second start at Double-A. Jeffress, the Brewers' first-round draft pick in 2006, had trouble locating at times. He walked four but he overpowered the Barons with his fastball, which consistently clocked in at between 94 and 97 mph. "Sometimes guys like that are effectively wild," Perdew said. "He's got a great arm." When the Barons did get their chances, they were unable to capitalize because of a mixture of baserunning mistakes - Negron and shortstop Robert Valido were caught stealing - and bad luck. The Barons looked to be mounting a challenge in the eighth, when Valido and Negron led off the inning with singles off reliever David Johnson. A sacrifice bunt by second baseman Victor Mercedes moved them to second and third with one out. The next batter, Ricardo Nanita, sent a 1-0 pitch back through the box, but Johnson gloved the line drive and doubled Negron off of second base. The loss drops the Barons to 27-28 in the second half of the Southern League pennant race. Huntsville Box Score Martin Maldonado three singles, Lorenzo Cain and Guilder Rodriguez two apiece as the Stars' offense was hardly "efficient"; continued kudos, David Johnson; can't wait to read about Jeremy Jeffress in the Fall League... From the Manatees staff: (Viera, FL) Tonight's game between the St. Lucie Mets and the Brevard County Manatees has been postponed due to the impending rain and storms associated with Tropical Storm Fay. The game will be rescheduled at a later date. Brevard County will be taking on the Jupiter Hammerheads in a three-game series beginning on Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium. -
Nick Tyson's turn to chat with battlekow at BrewCrewBall Within the interview, they touch on RHP Wes Etheridge's situation, as it appears that his placement on the Temporary Inactive List was not related to bereavement or family leave. The 2007 12th rounder may have left the team on his own. Hopefully we'll learn more down the road. Don't let that bit of news sidetrack you from enjoying another fine interview with one of the Brewer prospects. battlekow, you should know that I've heard form folks, including some of the affiliate broadcasters, about how much they enjoy and learn from your interview series. Considering the sheer volume you've done, it's clear that the players are all very familiar with the series, have seen that the interviews are well-done, insightful, and thus, more and more players have been willing to chat with you. Once again, you should be commended and thanked -- again.

Yeah, that's another typo, that one from the Cleveland press (Zach Jackson being right-handed). I don't want to make too big a deal of it, because I've made my share of faux-pas, but you guys would be amazed how many times (near-daily) I'm making corrections in the media coverage accounts that get linked and pasted here (nothing that would change the content's focus, and not necessarily spelling / grammar errors). There was a game story recently (not the web site coverage, but the game story from a newspaper) that made me wonder if the reporter had actually seen the game -- it was a home game, not just a road game summary. I kept going back and forth with the game log and saying to myself, this is just wrong. Must have adjusted five-six factual errors. Pointing out each and every one is fruitless, but it does underscore that when sports reporters are filing late-evening stories, they're pretty much on their own in terms of editing.

Final: Round Rock (Astros) 6, Nashville 5 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Tony Gwynn photo, text follows -- Road Win Streak Ends With 6-5 Loss To Express ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds had their five-game road winning streak snapped with a 6-5 loss to the Round Rock Express on Sunday evening at The Dell Diamond. The Sounds (53-76) held a 5-1 lead in the contest only to watch Round Rock rally with five unanswered runs to record the victory. Nashville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Chris Woodward's two-out, two-run double to center off Round Rock starter Josh Muecke before Express right fielder Ray Sadler, who produced a game-high three hits on the evening, halved the lead with a two-out RBI double off Troy Cate in the bottom of the frame. AUDIO: Chris Woodward Two-Run Double The Sounds extended the lead to 5-1 on Adam Heether's third-inning RBI single combined with a pair of fourth-inning scores against Muecke. Cate helped his own cause with an RBI single that plated Vinny Rottino before Carlos Corporan scored the second Nashville run on the frame on a Tony Gwynn groundout. Round Rock rallied to tie the contest with a four-run rally in the bottom of the fourth. After Sadler singled and Nick Gorneault flew out to start the inning, Richie Gardner relieved Cate, who allowed two runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings in his spot start for Nashville. Danny Klassen greeted Gardner with a walk before Chris Johnson, Yordany Ramirez, and pinch-hitter and former Brewer farmhand Richard Paz followed with three straight singles to make it a 5-3 contest. Facing a bases-loaded jam, Gardner issued a run-scoring walk to Tommy Marzella before permitting a game-tying sacrifice fly off the bat of J.R. Towles. The Express scored the go-ahead run in the seventh with three consecutive two-out singles off Randy Choate. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Sadler and Gorneault singled before Klassen gave the home team its only lead of the evening at 6-5 with an RBI knock to center. The Sounds put the potential tying run on second base with two outs in the top of the ninth courtesy of Heether's double but Dave Borkowski retired Woodward on a groundout to preserve the one-run advantage and notch his second save of the year. Express reliever Fernando Nieve (2-5) was awarded the victory after working 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Choate (0-4) took the loss for the Sounds after giving up one run on three hits over two innings of work. The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. CT meeting on Monday night. Left-hander Lindsay Gulin (5-7, 3.95) will take the hill for Nashville to face Round Rock right-hander Jack Cassel (8-3, 3.02). Nashville Box Score Other than Yovani Gallardo's three early-season rehab starts, the only Sounds games this year to be started by a pitcher the Brewers drafted were by since-traded Steve Hammond (four games); Joe Dillon on base four times, but did not score a run nor drive one in; Vinny Rottino your left fielder; Mitch Stetter counting the days to September 1st... Final: Orem (Angels) 9, Helena 5 Helena Site Game Summary: Brewers Swept The Helena Brewers lost their fourth straight game to the Orem Owlz 9-5 and were swept in the season series in the process. For the Owlz, the win gives them their 14th straight and runs their record to 16-4 in the second half. The Brewers fall to 6-14 and remain in third place behind the Great Falls Voyagers. The Brewers started out hot as they plated four runs in the first inning with a double by David Fonseca and singles by Erik Komatsu, Brock Kjeldgaard and Chris Dennis. Orem would answer back in the top of the third inning, as the Owlz would score six runs on four singles, one Brewer error and one hit batsman. The Orem bullpen shut down the Brewer offense, not allowing a base runner over the last ten hitters and the Brewers only had three hits after the first inning. Jayson Miller earned his sixth victory of the year, as he surrendered five runs on seven hits while striking out four. Daniel Meadows was saddled with the loss for the Brewers, as the left-hander started out well but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Roberto Lopez, Angel Castillo and Luis Jimenez all had multi-hit games for the Owlz. The Brewers face the Ogden Raptors in a three-game series starting Monday. Final: West Virginia 5, Greenville (Red Sox) 2 And just like that, the division lead is back to three -- fantastic... West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT Eric Fryer drove in three runs and Lucas Luetge tossed six strong innings at Fluor Field on Sunday evening as the West Virginia Power won their fourth game in a row, defeating the Greenville Drive 5-2. Fryer gave West Virginia an early lead on a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The blast was his tenth of the season. Fryer struck again in the third inning, driving in Eric Farris on an RBI groundout to give the Power a 3-0 lead. Greenville scored their first run of the game on Oscar Tejada's two-out RBI double in the fourth. The Power added a pair of big insurance runs in the eighth inning. Fryer began the inning with a base hit and scored on Zelous Wheeler's double off the mini monster in left field. Caleb Gindl scored the next run on a wild pitch. The Drive plated their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Jered Stanley's solo home run. Luetge (2-1) tossed six strong innings, allowing just a run on six hits and fanned four in a winning effort. Reed Dickert (3) struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn the save and Jose Capellan (3-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. The Power improved to 70-55 on the year and 38-18 in the second half with the win. The Drive fell to 64-61 on the year and 24-31 in the second half with the loss. Three Power players turned in multi-hit games and all nine batters reached at least once. Logan Schafer paced the Power with a 3-for-5 performance. Fryer went 2-for-5, giving him five straight multi-hit games. The Power will finish the four game series against Greenville Monday night. The Power will start right hander R.J. Seidel (7-5, 5.23) and the Drive will counter with right hander Terumasa Matsuo (5-4, 4.59) The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM (6:00 Central). West Virginia Box Score You can debate how many big-time future major leaguers will come from this squad, but there is no doubt they have come together to be an absolute force within this minor league second half season, firing on all cylinders... This is a Birmingham News update from August 6th on Marseco -- Injury ends Michael Marseco's pro baseball season MIKE PERRIN Birmingham News staff writer Former Samford star Michael Marseco's first season in professional baseball came to an end last week when a thrown ball broke at least three bones in his face. Marseco, playing for the Helena (Mont.) Brewers in the Pioneer League, was hit last Thursday as he was trying to score from third base on a wild pitch in a game against the Great Falls (Mont.) Voyagers. The Fort Lauderdale native said the pitcher did not touch the throw from the catcher as he was sliding home. Marseco was to visit a specialist in Helena today and he expected to return to Birmingham later this week for surgery. "I fractured two sinuses under my right eye," Marseco said from Helena on Tuesday, "and part of my eye socket right next to my temple. They told me the break of the bone at the temple was not a clean break and won't heal by itself, so that's why I'll have to have surgery." Marseco said he was told that a plate would probably be inserted to promote healing of the bone. The shortstop was on a roll with the Milwaukee Rookie League team when he was injured. After batting just .188 in June, he was hitting .369 in July. His overall average was .311 in 40 games. Marseco had scored 18 runs with 13 doubles, three triples with 24 runs batted in. In July, he was batting .400 with runners in scoring position and had registered 38 of his 47 hits with 20 of his RBIs. "I have been getting good feedback," he said. "The scout who signed me said he expected me to be a late-season call-up (to Class A). "As soon as I get cleared and the swelling is gone and everything is in place on my face, I'll be back on the field."

Couple of Helena injury updates: Remember this July 31st post? We've never seen position players get hurt like this at a single level in Link Report history -- again, it's a Helena position player, and not their pitchers, who have just been punished in '08 -- Helena Top 4th - Michael Marseco singles on a soft fly ball to left fielder Lyndon Estill. - Erik Komatsu singles on a soft pop up to shortstop Tyler Kuhn. Michael Marseco to 2nd. - Brock Kjeldgaard grounds into double play, shortstop Tyler Kuhn to first baseman Mike Grace. Michael Marseco to 3rd. Erik Komatsu out at 2nd. - With Christopher Dennis batting, wild pitch by Daniel Hudson, Michael Marseco scores. - Helena Brewers shortstop Michael Marseco left the game due to an injured head. - Christopher Dennis strikes out swinging. Not sure we've seen it worded that way before, but hopefully he's OK. To listen to the Marseco play, click on the KCAP archive of July 31st (you'll need to click on "Select Month" to choose July) , then browse to the 01:04:00 hour / minute mark. Michael took the ball right in the face on the slide home, also a chance to listen to Steve Wendt talk about the kid for the next several minutes, good stuff... *** UPDATE: Marseco has gone to Alabama to have facial surgery. Ouch -- our best to Michael. On another note, 4th round LHP Josh Romanski is heading to Arizona for further tests. It may be that hernia surgery is a possibility, if not a likelihood. See you with a fresh start in '09, Josh.

Brevard County Game One Game Log Chris Cody will be 25 in January -- pencil in the super-effective soft-tosser into Huntsville's rotation to open '09 -- no, you can write it in ink; his 2008 numbers at West Virginia and Brevard here, wow... -
What an honor to follow this kid -- most Braun feature articles, like this one, give me goosebumps thinking about this kid's future (and present).
