There have been only three nine-inning perfect games thrown in Pacific Coast League history. The Nashville Sounds now own two of them. Left-hander Manny Parra threw a perfect game in his second Triple-A start as the Sounds beat the Round Rock Express 3-0 on Monday. Parra (1-1) set a career high with 11 strikeouts. He threw 107 pitches ? including 77 strikes ? and did not face a three-ball count against any batter until the seventh inning. Parra had full counts on Jason Lane and Cody Ransom in the eighth before retiring them on a groundball out and a pop out in foul territory. "Honestly, I didn't get nervous at all," Parra told the Austin (Texas) American Statesman. "As far as I was concerned it was a 1-0 ballgame in the eighth inning and I fell behind a couple of guys. "There's no denying it, I knew (what was going on) the whole time. You don't expect it. Crazy things happen in baseball. I have no idea what to do." In the ninth inning, Parra struck out Humberto Quintero and pinch-hitter Barry Wesson. Jesse Garcia then popped up to first base to end the game. The closest hit of the night came when Wesson chopped a high ground ball toward third, but it rolled foul. "This is amazing. I was never really nervous with our defense," center fielder Tony Gwynn said. "If there was anything coming my way I was going to catch it, no doubt." The Nashville victory, combined with a loss by Iowa, thrust the Sounds (45-32) back into first place in the American Conference Northern Division. Nashville took the lead in the first inning when Callix Crabbe bowled over catcher Quintero to score on Joe Dillon's single. Mike Rivera added a two-run double in the eighth inning. Tacoma's John Halama threw the first PCL perfect game on July 8, 2001. The Sounds' John Wasdin duplicated the feat on April 7, 2003 at Greer Stadium.
  2. Written prior to last night's Sounds game, remember that Nashville was on the road Monday night -- Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=56859 Kremblas looks to distribute at-bats By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent The Nashville Sounds are 2-3 since Tony Gwynn was optioned down by Milwaukee last week. They had the best record in the Pacific Coast League at the time, but thanks in part to losing two of three against Iowa, the Sounds are now in second place. Gwynn talked about not wanting to ?mess things up,? when he joined the Nashville roster. The Sounds were 13-4 before he arrived. ?Things are working here and I don?t want to get in the way,? Gwynn said. The Brewers said after sending Gwynn down, they?d like to see if he can play all three outfield positions effectively. He?s primarily been a center fielder. So far, Gwynn has started at all three different positions during his five games since returning. He?s hitting .314 as well. ?I know there are some things I need to work on ? being more patient at the plate,? Gwynn said. ?I mainly just want to get out there and play every day.? Since the Brewers optioned down Gwynn specifically so he could get more at-bats, it stands to reason other players will suffer in exchange. Outfielder Drew Anderson and utility man Vinny Rottino are among those who could see less at-bats since Gwynn joined a crowded outfield. Anderson has started just twice since Gwynn came back. It will only be more difficult for Sounds manager Frank Kremblas to evenly distribute at-bats once infielder Andy Abad full recovers from his wrist injury and returns off the disabled list. ?There will always be at-bats for guys,? Kremblas said. ?I always think I do a pretty good job of making sure everybody gets to play.? ALL-STAR ANNOUNCEMENT: Media voting for the 20th Triple A All-Star game, which will take place July 11 in Albuquerque, is complete. The Sounds? two most-deserving candidates for the team, third baseman Ryan Braun and starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo, have been promoted and are currently playing in Milwaukee. Starter Chris Oxspring (6-4, 3.14 ERA) has Nashville?s best chance of making the team. Relievers Steve Bray (4-1, 1.85 ERA) and Luther Hackman (11 saves, 2.70 ERA) are also options. EX-SOUNDS SHINING: The aforementioned Gallardo and Braun have performed well since being promoted by Milwaukee. Entering Monday?s games, Braun was hitting .321 with five homers and has been inserted as the No. 3 hitter in the first-place Brewers? lineup. In two starts, Gallardo is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA and is making Brewers manager Ned Yost have to think long and hard about how to re-organize the pitching staff when starter Chris Capuano comes off the disabled list. Yost told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that moving Gallardo to the bullpen was an option. Besides those two 2007 Sounds, former Nashville star Corey Hart is hitting .317 with ten homers as the Milwaukee leadoff man. And of course there?s slugger Prince Fielder, who leads the National League with 26 home runs.
  3. Helena Site Game Summary: Brewer Pitchers Toss One-Hitter HELENA--Three Helena pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter and end the Brewers' three-game losing streak. Brewer pitching silenced the bats from the Missoula Osprey and for the second consecutive night Helena set a season high in hits, ultimately prevailing 9-2. Brewer starter R.J. Seidel struck out six over five innings and allowed the only Osprey hit when catcher Sean Coughlin ripped a RBI double to rightfield in the fourth inning. Relievers Casey Baron and Nick Tyson followed Seidel's performance by combining for four no-hit, shutout innings. Offensively Helena scored in five of the first six innings to take a 9-2 lead that later stood as the final. Jonathan Lucroy and Eric Newton both went 3-for-5; Newton had three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Zealous Wheeler had his second multi-hit game in a row going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Others with two hits included Caleb Gindl and Kurt Crowell. Gindl now has a seven-game hitting streak to begin his professional career. Along with his two hits, Crowell had two RBIs on the night. All three of the Brewer wins this year have come against Missoula. The win also marks Helena's first home victory of the 2007 season. The Brewers will look to make it two in a row 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) on Tuesday night against the Osprey.

  7. Final: Augusta (Giants) 4, West Virginia 0 West Virginia Site Game Summary: The West Virginia Power had nine hits, and at least one baserunner in every inning of Monday night?s game against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium, but it was not enough as the GreenJackets took game one of the series with a 4-0 shutout. Matt Weston?s two-out RBI double put Augusta on the board in the first inning. The GreenJackets increased their lead on two-out RBI singles from Bobby Felmy in the third and Manny Burris in the fifth inning. Augusta plated their final run on Tyler Graham?s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning. The 4-0 loss marked the third time that West Virginia has been shutout this season, and it was their first shutout loss since May 15th against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. West Virginia has lost 4-0 in all three of their shutout losses this season. Steve Calicutt (2-3) pitched four scoreless innings of relief to get the victory and Chris Toneguzzi (0-1) got the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits over five innings. The Power fell to 50-23 overall and 2-3 in the second half, and the GreenJackets improved to 54-21 overall and 4-1 in the second half with the win. Andrew Lefave paced the Power with three hits and Steve Chapman chipped in with two. The Power will continue the four game series against the GreenJackets Tuesday night. The Power will start right hander Jeremy Jeffress (4-0, 1.14) and Augusta will start left hander Ben Snyder (8-2, 2.22). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). 8. Final: Lakeland (Tigers) 8, Brevard County 3 MiLB.com: Hernandez hammers Manatees Michael Hernandez plated four runs to propel host Lakeland past Brevard County, 8-3, on Monday. Hernandez hit a two-run homer, his 12th, in the fifth inning and drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the seventh. He added an RBI single in the eighth. The 23-year-old right fielder also drove in four runs on June 12 at Sarasota. Cameron Maybin went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, and William Rhymes scored three runs for the Flying Tigers (2-2). Lakeland starter Lucas French gave up three runs -- one earned -- on 10 hits and a walk with three strikeouts in six frames. Ricky Steik (1-6) yielded two hits with a strikeout over three scoreless innings for the win. Darren Ford hit three singles and knocked in two runs and Chris Errecart went 3-for-4 for the Manatees (3-2). Brevard County reliever Patrick Ryan (1-2) gave up two runs on two hits and a walk over one inning for the loss. 9. Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 10, Huntsville 0 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1238 Avery and Bruce Lead Lookouts to Victory James Avery tossed eight scoreless innings and Jay Bruce homered twice and finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle in Chattanooga?s 10-0 blanking of Huntsville Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts improved to 6-2 in the second half of the season and 35-42 overall, while the Stars fell to 3-5 in the second half and 40-36 overall in suffering their worst defeat of the season. The Stars were held to three runs or less for a 12th time in the last 14 games and held to six hits or fewer for an 11th time in the last 16 contests. Adam Rosales tripled in two runs with two outs in the first inning and scored on a base hit to right field by Luis Bolivar to make it 3-0 Lookouts six batters into the game. Bruce crushed a three-run home run to center field and a run-scoring fielder?s choice grounder by Ryan Hanigan plated a fourth run in the second inning to extend the visitors lead to 7-0. Stars? starter Will Inman was taken out after two frames, allowing eight hits, walking two and fanning four to fall to 0-3. The young right-hander allowed 15 earned runs in 78 2/3 innings in 13 starts at high-class A Brevard County and has yielded 16 runs in 10 2/3 innings in three starts at the double-A level. Hanigan clubbed a home run in the seventh and Bruce?s long ball the opposite way to left-center field leading off in the eighth closed the scoring. Bruce also doubled and scored in the third and singled in just his fourth game at the double-A level. Drew Anderson, Paul Janish, Bruce and Enrique Cruz all scored twice for the visitors, who banged out 16 hits, the most allowed in a game by the Stars this season. Avery allowed only a single to Steve Sollmann and a single and double to Adam Heether, who was the only Stars? base runner to advance as far as third base. The right-hander fanned four, did not walk a batter and improved to 7-7. The series continues Tuesday night, as Huntsville will send right-hander Corey Thurman to the hill against Lookouts? right-hander Johnny Cueto, making his first double-A start. Final: Nashville 3, Round Rock (Astros) 0 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Manny Parra photo in his big league garb, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2408 Manny Parra Tosses Perfect Game For Sounds! ROUND ROCK, Texas ? Sounds left-hander Manny Parra made history on Monday evening at The Dell Diamond, throwing a perfect game in Nashville?s 3-0 victory over the Round Rock Express in his second Triple-A start. The 24-year-old hurler was mobbed near the mound by teammates shortly after 9:43 p.m. as first baseman Brad Nelson gloved a game-ending popup off the bat of pinch-hitter Jesse Garcia as Parra etched his name into the record books. AUDIO: The Final Pitch And Celebration -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-25.mp3 The rare achievement was only the third nine-inning perfect game in the 104-year history of the Pacific Coast League ? and the second by a member of the Nashville Sounds. Tacoma?s John Halama threw the first on July 8, 2001 before the Sounds? John Wasdin duplicated the feat on April 7, 2003 at Greer Stadium. Parra (1-1), who earned his first career Triple-A victory with the historic effort, set a new career high with 11 strikeouts in the contest. He previously fanned 10 batters on five occasions during the first four seasons of his pro career. The southpaw, who threw 107 pitches including 77 strikes, did not face a three-ball count against any batter until the bottom of the seventh inning and worked through three-ball counts only three times all evening. Parra?s perfect game was Nashville?s first no-hit effort since July 15, 2006, when Carlos Villanueva (7.0 IP), Mike Meyers (2.0 IP), and Alec Zumwalt (1.0 IP) combined on a no-no against Memphis at Greer Stadium. It was the sixth no-hit effort by a Sounds hurler (second perfect game) and 11th overall no-hitter in a game involving the Sounds in the club?s 30-year history. The Nashville victory coupled with a loss by Iowa thrust the Sounds (45-32) back into first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Nashville jumped on the board in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Callix Crabbe (3-for-4) doubled to right and scored two batters later on Joe Dillon?s two-out RBI single to left off Express starter Matt Albers. On the play, Crabbe ran through Round Rock catcher Humberto Quintero to reach the plate safely. The Sounds added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on Mike Rivera?s two-run double off Express reliever Paul Estrada, extending the lead to 3-0. Albers (2-3) turned in an outstanding outing but drew the tough-luck loss for Round Rock. The right-hander allowed one run on eight hits while striking out six batters over seven innings of work. The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. CT finale on Tuesday evening. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (3-1, 3.46), a winner in each of his last three starts, will man the bump for Nashville and face Round Rock right-hander Chan Ho Park (4-6, 5.79). 14. Southern League All-Star Coaches (not players) named: Phil Wellman was the manager who put on quite the tirade a couple of weeks ago... web.minorleaguebaseball.c...;fext=.jsp The Southern League has released the list of coaches for its 2007 All-Star Game, which will be held July 9 at the home of the Mississippi Braves, Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. Braves manager Phil Wellman and Huntsville Stars hitting coach Sandy Guerrero will oversee the South and North Division clubs, respectively, with Guerrero filling in for Stars manager Don Money, who will be unavailable because of a role he has at the 2007 Futures Game. Guerrero is in his fifth season as the Stars' hitting coach, having finished his playing career in 2005 with Tabasco of the Mexican League and Adirondack of the Northern League. Guerrero was a part of the Milwaukee Brewers farm system from 1986-92 and saw action with Class A Advanced Stockton, Double-A El Paso and Triple-A Denver. He will be joined by Stars pitching coach Rich Sauveur and trainer David Yeager in the North Division clubhouse.
  15. Pitches-strikes: Parra 52-42, Albers 105-60. That total is through 5 1/2 innings, so the Astros' Albers has thrown an extra 1/2 inning, but that discrepancy is still something. Pitch count only at 52 through five innings, including seven K's - amazing outing thus far.
  16. RHP Matt Kretzschmar, who spent all of 2006 with West Virginia, has been promoted to the Power from Helena, after two clean relief outings there. To make room, LHP Luis Ramirez, shut down until August to rest his elbow according to earlier reports, goes on the DL.

  22. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/story/S...ow+shines/ Power loses; Ramlow shines Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter The West Virginia Power has feasted on late-inning rallies in winning 50 of its first 71 games this season. In fact, the Power is unmatched in the South Atlantic League with six wins in games in which it trailed after eight innings. The latest Power rally was against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday evening when it plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game and walked off with a 9-8 win after scoring a pair of runs in the home half of the 13th. On Sunday, however, there was no magical comeback for the Power as it jumped to a 4-0 lead before falling 6-4 to the Intimidators at Appalachian Power Park. A Little League Day crowd of 4,732 looked on as the Power dropped to 50-22 overall and 2-2 in the Sally League's second half, while Kannapolis improved to 34-40 and 2-2. While the home crowd ultimately was disappointed with the game's outcome, Power southpaw Mike Ramlow made sure the crowd was treated to a superb starting pitching performance. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound Ramlow bounced back from a shaky first half with his best pitching performance to date. Ramlow, who entered the game with a 3-2 record and a 7.78 earned run average, tossed six innings of four-hit, one-run baseball before reaching his allotted pitch count. The lanky Ohio native struck out four and allowed no walks during his 81-pitch performance. He left the game with a 4-1 lead but watched helplessly as the Intimidators tagged right-handed reliever J.T. King (5-2) for four hits and five earned runs in two innings. "Definitely," Ramlow said when asked if Sunday's performance was his best this season. "I've been working in the bullpen on my secondary pitches, and, finally, today I got them to work." After struggling with inconsistency during the first half, Ramlow has spent a lot of time with Power pitching coach John Curtis in an attempt to improve his changeup and breaking ball since his last outing. "I've been failing to get my curveball to work, so I've been working real hard on it in the bullpen," Ramlow said. "It's a great feeling to finally have things clicking and to be able to throw pitches you want to throw in situations that you want to throw them in." Finally putting together a quality outing not only pleased Ramlow but also gave him something to show for his extra bullpen work. "Coach Curtis has been working a lot with me in the bullpen," Ramlow said. "My curveball hasn't been working at all. I've been keeping it up in the zone, and it's just been floating. Today was the best that it's worked. "I'm getting the ball out of my glove earlier so that I can get more over the top with it. That keeps it down in the zone." Curtis was pleased with his young left-hander's performance. "We've been trying to stress and work on getting his secondary pitches over the plate," Curtis said. "He did that beautifully today. His change and curve were outstanding. "He went from a one-pitch pitcher to a three-pitch pitcher today. It was just a great job." Now Curtis will help Ramlow work on continuing to improve as the season progresses. "I couldn't be more pleased with him," Curtis said. "But now he needs to string a few of these together. I told him not to get all flighty now. He needs to continue to work to improve because we need him." Power second baseman Kenny Holmberg got things rolling for the Power with a two-run blast in the second off Kannapolis starter Fautino DeLosSantos (5-2). Holmberg ended the day 1-for-4, but he is 14-for-32 with eight runs and 11 RBI against the Intimidators this season. The Power stretched the lead to 4-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Brent Brewer and an RBI single by Andrew Lefave. Ramlow's only downer was a two-seam fastball to Kannapolis slugger Chris Carter, who smashed a solo shot into the right-field bleachers. "It was an outside pitch, and he just hit it," Ramlow said. "He's a pretty good hitter." * * *Two former Charleston minor league baseball stars will play for the World team Sunday in the 2007 Futures All-Star Game at AT&T Park in San Francisco. 24. Final: Great Falls (White Sox) 10, Helena 2 Helena Site Game Summary: White Sox Complete Series Sweep HELENA--The Helena Brewers recorded a season-high ten hits, but the Great Falls White Sox offense proved too much as the White Sox swept the Brewers on their opening weekend. Great Falls scored during each of its at-bats between the third and sixth innings en route to a 10-2 victory. The White Sox jumped ahead 6-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Brewers finally put three hits together to get on the board. Mike Goetz provided the RBI single to make it a 6-1 game. Helena starter Roque Mercedes exited after four innings and he gave up five runs taking the loss in his first decision of the year. Reliever Craig Langille also allowed five runs, but pitcher Rob Bryson tossed three and one-thirds innings of shutout baseball. Caleb Gindl led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a triple for the Brewers and Jonanthan Lucroy followed with a sacrifice fly for a 10-2 White Sox advantage. Helena loaded the bases with two outs, but could not muster any more runs. Zealous Wheeler had a 2-for-4 performance, the only multi-hit game for the Brewers. Juan Moreno got the win to even his record at 1-1 going seven innings and allowing just one run. Helena now drops to 2-4 while Great Falls improves to 4-2. The Brewers will try for their first home win of the season when they play host to the Missoula Osprey at 7:05 PM Monday (8:05 Central). ***Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...507_01.txt Brewers lose three to give Sox a sweep By JASON SCOTT, Helena Independent Record Sports Writer ?When you?re hitting like we are, you need good pitching and good defense.? That?s what Helena Brewers manager Jeff Isom had to say after Sunday?s game at Kindrick Legion Field. Unfortunately, that?s not what the Brewers had as they dropped their third straight game to the Great Falls White Sox, 10-2. The Helena defense committed five errors in the game and the Brewer pitching wasn?t much better. An imposing Great Falls lineup pounded the ball against starter Roque Mercedes, getting six extra base hits, including three home runs. Brewers coaches made five trips to the mound in four innings. White Sox slugger Salvador Sanchez went 4-for-5 with a double and two homers. Danny Jordan also went deep for Great Falls. White Sox starter Juan Moreno went seven strong innings, scattering six hits with no walks and allowing just one run. He located the ball well against the Brewer offense, and got out of two jams with ground ball double plays. The only real trouble he faced was in the fifth inning, when designated hitter Jonathan Lucroy got a single followed by a Zealous Wheeler double. Two outs later, Mike Goetz singled in the first run of the game for the Brewers. The Brewers mounted a rally against White Sox reliever Joey Doehn in the bottom of the ninth that started with a leadoff triple from Caleb Gindl. A sacrifice fly from Lucroy brought Gindl home and Wheeler grounded to second for the second out. Then catcher Eric Fryer and first baseman Curt Rindal hit consecutive singles. After Goetz walked to load the bases, Matt Cline struck out swinging to end the game. Though Helena only scored two runs, Isom said he was happy to see his players get 10 hits. ?It takes some time to adjust to professional pitching,? he said. ?Some of the guys have sat out a little since college. Every day I see something better and better.? One highlight for the Brewers was relief pitcher Robert Bryson, who came in to clean up the sixth inning after the White Sox had scored four runs off reliever Craig Langille. Bryson retired the first seven batters he faced and closed out the contest after allowing one hit. ?(Bryson) has a good arm. He comes at you,? said Isom. He said it?s possible that Bryson will get a chance to start on the road. The Brewers dropped to 2-4 on the season. They host the Missoula Osprey for three games starting Monday before traveling back to Missoula for three more against the O?s.
