Farming the Brew

Sorry for no entries everyone! School is finally done for the summer, so I am going to try to get these out more often! In the mean time, enjoy this article on Woessner, one of the most underrated pitchers in the org! Also don't forget to follow and comment!

Tyler Woessner is a pitcher that doesn’t get enough love amongst Brewers Minor League pitchers, but he should. Background Tyler Woessner is a 6-4, 230lbs pitcher from Phoenix, AZ where he attended Pinnacle High School and then went on to attend Central Arizona College which is a Junior College. He was drafted by the Brewers in the 6th round of the 2022 Amateur Draft. Pitching Woessner’s college pitching stats (which you can find here) are quite impressive. Over his career, he boasted a 3.94 ERA, 21 wins and only 3 losses, and only allowed 12 home runs over 210.1 innings pitched. However, I think his most impressive stat was his 10.87 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. That is incredible for a college pitcher no matter the level. After he was drafted, Woessner pitched only 7 innings in 2022 across Brewers Gold in the Arizona Complex League and Carolina. He only threw 7 innings because he pitched a lot of innings in order to give his college team the best chance they had at winning the Junior College World Series, which they did indeed win. He is currently having a very exciting start to the 2023 season with which he is pitching for Wisconsin at High-A. He is sporting a 2.59 ERA over 31.1 innings. With a pitching staff at High-A that has some really solid options, Woessner has stood out among the staff thus far. MLB Pipeline: N/A FanGraphs: N/A Even with Woessner pitching the way he is, Pipeline failed to recognize him as a top 30 prospect in the organization, and I do think that is fair. He has only pitched roughly 38 innings in his professional career, all of which has been at the lower levels. However, I honestly would not be surprised to see Woessner start moving up in the organization around the All-Star break and beyond.

Hey Brewerralph! Sorry for getting back so late, been busy with school. But I have a couple of names that I want to talk about that are playing on the Trats right now that I think people will love to know about! Always open to suggestions too!

Metzinger has been the best bat in the Trats lineup this far, however Tyler Black has been playing and getting a lot of looks at 3B at AA, so I would expect to see Metzinger at High A until Black moves up. Watched both Warren and Clarke last year, and liked both a lot. Warren looks good for being a catcher in college and Clarke has raw power that he just hasn't found in the pros yet. Metzinger, at least in my mind, is better than those two. He has shown impressive eye discipline in the games that I have gotten to see and has hit for power fairly well. I would be very surprised if he doesn't maneuver his way onto the AA roster at some point in the next few months.

Yes, he is roughly 2 years older than the average player at High A. However, I don't think that matters too much at this point in time in his development because he was older coming out of college and did not get a lot of pro looks his first season. I would expect him to move up to Double A this summer sometime if he continues to improve, where he would be about a year or so younger than the average.

I have a pitcher on the Rattlers that I really liked to watch last week that I may throw out there! I'll check the lower minors to see who is interesting!

Ben Metzinger is a really intriguing infield prospect for the Brewers right now. He can play multiple positions on the dirt and even play a little behind the dish. What makes him really interesting is that he has been playing exceptionally well, and yet you hardly ever hear his name. Background Ben Metzinger hails from Louisville, Kentucky, where he also chose to play ACC College Baseball at the University of Louisville. He’s 23 (DOB: 6/26/1999), stands at 5’11” and weighs 195 lbs. He was drafted in the seventh round by the Brewers in 2022. He also has a nice list of accomplishments in college, including the 2021 All-ACC Tournament Team, 2022 All-ACC Baseball Academic Team, 2022 All-ACC Third Team, and 2022 All-NCAA Louisville Regional Team. Offense First, I want to talk about his bat in college. Throughout his college career, he had a slash of .306/.414/.552 for a .966 OPS across 107 games at Louisville. He also cranked out 24 career home runs, 17 doubles, 91 runs batted in, and 13 stolen bases. These numbers are exceptional considering you also have to factor in the 2020 COVID season as a factor for those numbers not being better. Next, let’s talk about his bat in pro ball. He played three games at ACL Brewers Gold, so his stats don’t speak volumes for that stint. But then he got the call to High A Wisconsin, where I had the opportunity to watch him since I work there. His numbers in 22 games with the Timber Rattlers were a slash of .222/.314/.344 with a .658 OPS. He hit three home runs, had eight runs batted in and two doubles. Personally while watching him, I think his play was better than his numbers may have suggested. So far in 2023, Metzinger has played in eight games for the Rattlers and has a .273/.515/.455 and a .970 OPS. He has one home run, five runs batted in, and a double. What is exciting is that thus far, he has walked 11 times and only stuck out nine times. While watching his first home series against Peoria this past week (4/11-4/16) he had four games with multiple walks and five total games with at least a walk. His eye is definitely something that is a crucial part to his game, however he also hits just as hard as anyone else on this Rattlers team. He has accrued a .956 fielding percentage where has had 68 chances across 269 innings and has three errors. Again, his glove is something that shows up in person and I truly believe he may have the arm strength to stick at third. MLB Pipeline: N/A FanGraphs: 33rd in Brewers System Ben Metzinger is a really fun prospect because he isn’t hyped up by most Brewer fans. He made a big jump straight out of the draft into High A ball and performed well enough. Playing ACC baseball helped a ton for his development, and I believe that if he can keep walking at a clip similar to what he has been, he is going to move up boards. This will be in due to the fact that Metzinger has a great eye but also hits the ball hard and has an amazing glove/arm combo at the hot corner. Keep an eye on Metzinger for the time being.

I was saying yesterday how much he looks like Corey Hart in RF. Grew up during the Hart era, so to me that's what I see when I watch Wiemer.

I got MLB.tv pretty much for the reason that you can watch all minor league games on it now. The Mudcats entire roster really is interesting, lots of fun names there for sure. I am really excited that the Brewers are allowing Low to continue the two way experience now that he is in Low A. Hopefully it works for him! Thanks for the comment!

Quinton Low is the Brewers’ version of Shohei! Okay, okay, no one will ever be Shohei. But Quinton is a really interesting two way guy even if he doesn’t stick with both. That alone is something that makes him a really intriguing prospect for the Brew Crew. Background Quinton Low was drafted in the 13th round in the 2021 Amateur Draft out of Chatfield High School in Littleton, Colorado. He’s 6’4” and 215 lbs and is 20 years old (DOB: 9/5/2002). He bats left and throws right and First Base and pitches here and there as well. Offense Low played 9 games in 2021 for ACL Brewers Blue, accumulating a .364 batting average among 26 plate appearances with a .364 on base percentage as well. However, in 2022 Quinton played 43 games and had a .254 average with two home runs, 16 runs batted in, one triple, seven doubles, and even had an exceptional .370 on base percentage. He did however strike out 35 times among 114 at bats, which is pretty high unfortunately for a kid in the lower ranks. He had four errors (.981 fielding percentage) but did help contribute to 23 double plays. I could not find any video, so I am unsure if his four errors came because of bad scoops that he should have had or if they were throwing errors. Fangraphs: Not Ranked MLB Pipeline: Not Ranked Quinton Low is a super unique prospect. With him being such a low pick, that gave the Brewers the opportunity to allow him to both hit and pitch, and it could work out for them. While he has a very small amount of data to go off of, his pitching looks really solid and he also has a frame that he could mold into a solid first base or corner outfield spot. Only the future will tell what comes of Low, but I think he is definitely someone that we should keep an eye on as Brewers fans and see where his potential can take him.

I worked for the Trats in the press box last year and plan on continuing this year, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Murray at SS. He was so smooth over there. Pinero was another guy that was a great fielder too. Excited for a full summer of watching Brown Jr and Robert Moore hopefully.
