  1. UNLV currently favored by 5 against Wisconsin. The Rebels get their stud player Tre'Von Willis back today.
  2. I know I'm waaaaay late to the party, but man, Freaks and Geeks was an awesome show. I just started catching some episodes for the first time on IFC and I love it. Great cast, music, stories, lots of heart, everything. The only guy I don't particularly care for is Seth Rogen. It's hard not to have a crush on Linda Cardellini too. I don't think Apatow ever did anything as good after it.
  3. Best lyrics to start a love song with: "I may not always love you..." Sorry, I've been sort of obsessed with "Pet Sounds" lately.
  4. I just want to echo nsimps' shoutout to Black Dynamite. One of my favorite movies of the last year. I think it deserved a lot more pub than it got as it rises above your typical spoof. A lot of love went into making this movie. Michael Jai White deserves some kind of award for his performance. His delivery and his dialogue are major sources of the laughs in this movie.
  5. That gameday program should read West Virginia too, not Virginia. Right?
  6. For what it's worth (absolutely nothing), whenever Wolf pitches, my friend and I reference the following scene from Pulp Fiction where Samuel L. Jackson says "You sending in the Wolf?"
  7. That's an interesting idea Robert. Thanks for sharing. I agree though that Inception doesn't really capture what dreams are really like or even attempt to. Dreams are much more surreal, random, blurry, crazy and less structured. One of my criticisms is the Snow Base level. In particular, the gun fighting. It became monotonous and a little boring. You could have taken out about 3/4 of the gun battles, and I think that would have helped. Just something about that whole level seemed off to me - can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it was the pacing or the logic of how they approached the base - I don't get how they thought they had time to climb the face of that cliff. I could probably blast a bunch of holes in the logic or the rules of the dreamworld, but I worry if I do that I would just end up overthinking it and detracting from my personal enjoyment of the movie.
  8. Spoilers Just to add on to the ending a little bit. I was in a packed theatre, and you could just feel everybody holding their breath for the top spinning at the end. When they cut to black, it was one of the coolest theatre experiences of my life. Most people gasped, some people started laughing, some were clapping, but everybody immediately turned to their friends with their mouths open - "He didn't really just end the movie that way, did he?" The ambiguity won't sit well with some, but I loved it.
  9. I really enjoyed it. Very tense and engaging. Excellent cast. I particularly liked Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Pretty complex, but it you are willing to go along for the ride, I think it's a lot of fun. Gordon-Levitt's first dream within a dream altered-gravity fight is particularly memorable, as is the super-slow motion and the score.
  10. I'll 2nd Pappy's. It's a mile or two west of the downtown area, but it's worth it. We went at around 3-4pm on a Saturday afternoon and the line was out the door, but it was a fun atmosphere.
  11. There are several casinos too within walking distance right downtown near the Edward Jones Dome by the river.
  12. Bruce, I wish I was a better resource for that question. I actually have a pretty sweet situation where I stay with some high school friends who live about 10-15 miles from Churchill Downs. My friend's brother is our designated driver and he comes and picks us up from the Derby every year. So I've actually never stayed at a hotel for it. And I'm not sure about the public transportation either. But it looks like a madhouse afterwards, and it sure doesn't seem like there is any cheap and easy way to do it. I would bet that a cab ride across the river would be around $20-$25 though. FYI, our tradition to is to go to 4th Street Live on Thursday night. Pretty cool place if you are into the bar scene at all. I've never been there on Friday or Saturday night but I bet it's quite a place to be.
  13. Just doing a quick look at who might be there with the Bucks 1st pick, if they want to add some beef and a little shot blocking prowess, it looks like guys like Whiteside, Udoh, and Aldrich might be there. I want to like Aldrich, but he seemed like he took a step back from his sophomore to his junior year, so that sort of bugs me. He pretty much got worse in every department except Blocked Shots this past year. I didn't see Whiteside play at all and only saw a little bit of Udoh in the tournament. Mr QL mentioned Varnado as well, so he could be a guy worth looking at, but maybe not until the 2nd round. I sort of like James Anderson a little too. Good size for a shooting guard, he's aggresive, and he's a playmaker.
  14. Bruce, my group was in Turn 3 as well. And thank goodness we brought a canopy. If we didn't have one, I doubt we would have stayed for the entire day. My group has been going for about 5 years now, and I agree that it would be nice to sit up in the grandstands at some point. Good times. Just remember to keep your head on a swivel if you are using the Turn 3/4 Port-o-potties.
  15. In honor of the Bucks making the playoffs: Sort of neat video. I had no idea what the name of the NBA theme music for NBC was and who wrote it. Gotta love the air dribbles.
  16. Nice find Diskono! I stand corrected. Owens was the lefty that hit that big 3 point shot against Tulsa that sent the Badgers to the Sweet 16 about 7-8 years ago, right? I think they lost to Kentucky that year?
  17. Not related to any hoops in Wisconsin, but did any of you catch the highlights to the Big Sky championship game the other night? Montana's Anthony Johnson had a pretty epic game. Montana was down by 20 at half and ended up beating Weber St. 66-65 thanks in most part to Anthony Johnson's 34 2nd half points and scoring the last 21 points of the game for his team. I know it's against lesser competition but this guy looks awesome in these highlights below. What a game! And a pretty cool story to boot too: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/blog/the_dagger/post/Even-better-than-Anthony-Johnson-s-game-His-bac?urn=ncaab,227403
  18. Milwaukee gets a quarterfinal game at home tonight against UIC to start the Horizon League Tournament. They are 11.5 point favorites. Gametime is at 7pm. It appears as if the Panthers have actually been playing pretty well over the last month and a half (I haven't seen them live once this year). Even in the games that they've lost, they've been very competitive. Ricky Franklin has had a fine senior campaign and the Panthers have been in the top 20 in terms of defensive rebounding in the country during the whole year, according to kenpom. I'm crossing my fingers for a little run here in their tournament. Go Panthers!!!
  19. "He could throw that speedball by you, make you look like a fool boy" Speedball? Who says speedball? Are you making a drug reference Bruce? Maybe it's from a different era, or I'm missing something, but I've never heard anybody say speedball when referring to pitching except for in Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days." It always just seems a little odd when I hear it.
  20. That's 3 straight wins for Marquette, and they all came on the road, in OT. I have to believe that's a rare thing. Anyways, big wins for Marquette.
  21. Did you look at your link for the 2008-2009 season? There is no way that the Big East was the 4th best conference last year.
  22. One of the things that I was dead wrong about going into this year was Marquette's 3 point shooting. I apologize if this was brought up already, but do you guys realize that Marquette is the number one 3 Point FG% shooting team in the country? They are shooting 42.4% as a team thanks in large part to: DJO 51/101 50.5% (man this guy has been a godsend) Acker 33/63 52.4% (was only shooting 33.0% for his career coming into this year) Cubillan 27/66 40.9% (a career 36.9% 3 point shooter coming into this year) Jimmy Butler 11/21 52.4% (OK, I know that's not many attempts but he has a 136.4% offensive efficiency rating right now according to kenpom which is incredible - he's also one of the best in the nation at getting to the FT line - maybe he should shoot more?) I hope this Marquette team doesn't get lost in the shuffle of the enormous Big East because they've been playing great and definitely deserve to be in the NCAA Tournament. They're probably a team that's flying under the radar nationally right now. I don't know if people realize how good of a team they are - just very undersized. I think they are much more dangerous than their overall and conference records suggest.
  23. Maybe. It's sort of impossible to prove isn't it? I don't think it's unreasonable to speculate that if the Badgers can beat the best team in the ACC at home, then perhaps they could go 8-0, maybe 7-1 at home if they were in fact in the ACC. Then maybe they squeak out 2-3 road victories at Boston College or NC State or Virginia, and they might, just maybe back their way into a top 5 finish in the ACC. And for what it's worth, I agree with you that I don't see a national contender right now in the Big 10.
  24. That's probably debatable considering that the Badgers beat 2 of the top 3 teams in the ACC standings already this year (Duke and Maryland) and 1 last year (Flordia St.). I'm not saying that the Badgers are an elite squad or anything but I think they'd have a pretty good shot of staying in the top 5 of those three conferences with the possible exception of the Big East. Heck, there are only a few teams in the country this year (or any year) who wouldn't struggle to stay in the top 5 of that conference - that thing's huge. I will say though, that going into this year, I thought the Big 10 was actually going to be a little bit better than it has been. Michigan, Minnesota, and Illinois have been pretty disappointing in my opinion.
  25. The Wisconsin page on kempom - http://kenpom.com/team.php?team=Wisconsin - suggests that Rob Wilson is better than Jarmusz at the following so far this year: Scoring efficiency FG shooting 3-point shooting FT shooting Offensive rebounding Defensive rebounding Assists Steals Jarmusz gets the slight edge in committing less turnovers (they both are 2 of the worst on the team in this regard) and blocked shots (very minimal - almost not worth bringing up). The other, more subjective side of this is, who is the better defender? I guess I'm not sure as I don't get to see nearly as many games as I would like to. I'm assuming it's basically a wash. The disclaimer of course about all of this is that we are working with some pretty small samples with Wilson. At the very least though, I think Wilson and Evans need to start cutting into Jarmusz's playing time. The only argument you could really make is that Wilson might be a little bit more turnover prone than Jarmusz, but I think overall that Wilson just brings more to the table and has the better upside. I would even speculate that if Wilson gets more playing time, he might gain more confidence and start cutting down on his turnovers.
