  1. If we were to carry three catchers, Sanchez still wouldn't be one of them. Wes Clark has hit, catches and plays 1st base. He is a power bat, eliminating the need for Sanchez. Plus, he's young and he's healthy.
  2. Mitchell was a no. 1 draft pick and has hit .278 with 5 HR in 128 AB. That's a small sample size, but I guess super small is subjective. It does expand to 25 HR AND 80 RBI over a season.. I think he's made a career out of proving the naysayers wrong on a regular basis his whole life. By the way, those stats would have led the team in HR and tied Adames for the RBI lead..He's not an HR hitter per se, but he's working hard at making himself more of a power threat during his time off. He also has stolen 9 bases and only caught once. Your search for negative things to say about him, using geek stats that claim he has flawed peripherals, is a weak attempt to discredit his results. Meanwhile, you prefer Wiemer? Wiemer might become a hitter one day (and he has had success against left handers while playing solid defense, so he has value). If you recall, Frelick got hurt about the same time as Mitchell, or he would have gotten the call when Mitchell went down. Wiemer would have filled Perkins role at best. Mitchell needs to improve his upper strike zone coverage, which I expect he will do. Bottom line, this team plays better when Mitchell is in the lineup. He hits, can bunt, can run, is a good fielder and has a great attitude and approach. I'll take a .343 OBP that can steal, hit with some pop and plays great defense any day. He wasn't drafted #1 for no reason.
  3. Nothing against Wiemer, but I'll take Mitchells .100 higher average and what looks to be an improved whiff rate this spring. People with short memories forget how hot we were before he had his freak accident. HE was the energy this team had last April. Wiemer was not supposed to be in the majors last season, but Frelick and Mitchell going down opened a door for him... and after a hot start, pitchers adapted and he still hasn't been able do much, except against left handers.. Mitchell is a far more rounded player at this point.
  4. Nice article...I don't get the perennial forecasts of doom that some share. This offense is bursting with great youngsters to augment the solid veterans.. If Matt Arnold can swing a deal for a good starter, we will be in the thick of the division race again..
  5. Good comments! I hope Tyler Black is working hard at his defense, because his bat appears to be the best impact bet. Monasterio has proven to be a valuable asset as a multi positional utility guy and there's going to be a battle beyond that with our acquisitions and Owen Miller. I really am pulling for Adames and whatever it takes to get another good starter for the rotation.
  6. Love what I'm hearing from Murphy. He's an open mind that doesn't marry himself to one train of thought. Nor does he subscribe to the current analytic trends while at the same time doesn't summarily dismiss the value of them. He's right about defense. It makes the pitching staff better. So all things being equal on the hitting side, the defensive guys get a priority. I can't wait to get Tyler Black in the lineup, but requiring him to reach for a higher defensive ceiling is good for both player AND team. Now it's Arnolds turn to go get a good starter that can eat innings. Not a great or overpriced guy. Just a guy that will take the ball every fifth day and give a decent 6 inning effort.
  7. I'd say yes to either one, if Trevor Bauer is off the table. The brewers have some good young arms that need seasoning.. They have some good guys for back of the rotation. Hall has made a good first impression. Gasser and Misiorowski look to be future rotation material. But our top of rotation needs legitimacy.
  8. I'm more bearish than bullish on Willy than most, which isn't all on Willy..His defense was more consistent in '23. He has undeniable power. His problem has been that he was pencilled into the 3 spot in the lineup and he's a good #6 hitter, but doesn't make nearly enough contact for the top of the order. 165 strikeouts was the most obvious stat of his. Total all or nothing approach. I truly think he has better tools than he's shown. The homers are usually in low leverage situations, It took a huge September to get his average up to .217 and he flirted with an under .300 OBP up until September also. The 12 double plays he hit into were a career high and I couldn't decide if he just looks slow or just doesn't run hard on ground balls..because the hustle and sense of urgency showed up in late August and continued to the end of the season. He's a curious player.. Loves interactions with opposing players and is a great cheerleader. If he plays with his September intensity as the rule, he'd be a guy worth signing. But the summer months player is nothing special and I'd rather see Turang at short as well as the other acquisitions.. I think Murphy saw what happened when he was moved down in the order. If he sticks around, I hope he works harder at being a leader than a cheerleader.
  9. Been listening to the naysayers regarding Mitchell since the day he was drafted. Since then, all he's done is hit. He knows he needs to address the hole in his swing on high fastballs. But like everyone else but stat geeks, his positives far outweigh his vulnerabilities.. .207 predicted average? Sounds like the same type of genius that put Adames batting third with his 165 Ks and no contact. Preferring Wiemer to Mitchell? I like Wiemer more than Perkins, but he needs to show regular contact before I see him as more than a defensive replacement and a useful guy against left handers. Both Mitchell and Frelick are healed and I hope Mitchell gets regular time in left field in late innings.. Yeli still covers ground well, but Mitchells arm is better and he's quick.. A lot depends on Chourio and if he's ready.
  10. Yeli, Hoskins, Contreras, Chourio and Adames are all 20-30 HR potential guys, so there's a great mix of speed and pop there. Frelick has gap power.. If the speed guys take their walks, this offense will score. Far more concerned about the starting pitching..Lots of promise, but as it stands I see a lot of 7-5 games
  11. Great article and music to my ears. I have hoped Murphy would let guys do what they're good at.. instead of preaching launch angles to excellent line drive hitters. I also firmly agree with his philosophy that used in the right situations (like his Scherzer example), bunting can be disruptive for the pitcher and defense. I think Frelick and Turang can drive opposing defenses mad if allowed to.. The only thing I'd point out in the article was the seismic shift in production when Willy was moved down to 6th in the order and Tellez got hurt and Canha and Santana replaced them higher in the order. Their patience and willingness to walk turned the offense around. They went from bottom of the barrel in the first half to midpack in offense. The right approach (which CC didn't embrace) will win a lot of games.
  12. Nice story on Pat Murphy's coaching staff.

Expected a fluff piece, but it ended up covering Pat's motivations and his desired approach.  Something that's been one of my biggest concerns this offseason.

I admired what CC  brought to the table as far as getting both veteran players and young guys pulling on the same end of the rope as a team. It led to the most successful run as a franchise since the early 80's.

However, those upset about him ditching the Brewers for the Cubs still haven't gotten answers concerning why. The Brewers were offering a raise and the chance to complete his mission. When I questioned his in game strategy, I'd get Counsell apologists telling me he wasn't calling the shots as far as lineups and personnel moves (like activating the injured Winker for the playoffs and using him in key at bats after a bad season. To be fair, reducing a division winner to the wild card round, best two of three is a Commissioner issue that needs fixing, NOT by more expansion,  but I digress).

I hope Murph is calling the shots, start to finish and doesn't sit still for analytic geeks batting unmotivated .200 hitters in the heart of the order for 3/4 of the season.

Also, sitting and waiting for home runs is NOT a plan when your youth is built and speed. HR's are a happy occasion, but as a game plan is lazy management and proved costly.

I'm Murphy's age and seeing his college uber success record gives me hope that he will emphasize contact over 250 strikeouts and hitting into clutch situation double plays from the 3 and 4 hitters.

I'm cautiously optimistic that he will be given control of the offense and utilize their strengths instead and bury launch angles and low contact, low on base percentage to the dustbin marked "Fads".

The front office is working without their two best pitchers, and as much as I like Freddie and Wade, they are better served as #2 and #3 starters. I hold hope that Matt Arnold is still working the phones to get Murph at least a #2 or #3  quality starter. We have good #4,5 (and even #6, if needed) guys. But without another solid 7 inning guy, I think we will struggle in an improving Central division.

Anyway, the article was informative and gives me optimism that the decision making will be left more in the hands of management instead of stats geeks.  Their info is valuable, but the manager is hired to disseminate the info and make decisions, not the other way around.

  13. Even in the videos I've seen, Ashby appears to be short arming a tiny bit. That's to be expected as he allows himself to get over his injury, so I don't expect 99... But As he trusts his arm more I suspect mid 90s might be realistic. But supposed to have the best stuff, numbers wise....so wish him well..
  14. Glad to see the optimism in this corner. Woody has been the cornerstone of this extended Brewers success. Nothing against Corbin, he was a spectacular #2 and wish him well in Baltimore. But the staff clicks as a unit when Woody is at the helm. Sure, there's risk associated with this signing, but he has the kind of character where it wouldn't surprise me if he mentored while he rehabs. I truly hope he recovers, for both his and the teams sake. Peralta seems to relax and perform better when Woodruff is the #1... I hope Matt Arnold has one more pitching trick up his sleeve. He has lots of talented young arms, so maybe '24 is an audition for '25s staff, especially if Woody returns healthy. I also agree the competitor in him will try to pitch if we find our way to the playoffs. Still unlikely, but his presence this year will be a positive for the team.
  15. Agree on a pass on Lux. We have plenty of solid defense in the infield. Our only desperate need is a strong starter. Someone good enough to slot between Freddie and Miley. I'm a huge Miley fan but his workload needs to be in the 120-140 innings range if you want him healthy come fall. Cabrera is one of the few right handers with great stuff available, but he has question marks (walks and health), a straight up deal for Adames is realistic. The Marlins also have catching needs and if we truly have Sanchez (that deal seems to be in question, after the fact), then we have a couple catchers with major league experience to add to the trade..
  16. Agreed, no clear cut winner at this point. Hall has an edge to start but if he has problems, its anyone's spot. I could see each of the left handers spot starting against lefty heavy lineups and Joe Ross getting starts against righties, unless one of them steps up. If one of the lefthanders bombs in spring training, they will likely be the one in AAA.
  17. Good write up. Agree on most of the points. I think Urshela should be the focal point and I hope Lorenzen had the Brewers scouts at his workout.. Paredes would be the high end option but may cost too much. But very desirable. Chapman is great but not worth the admission price.. If the Brewers still want a left handed option out of the pen, one of the lower cost options should be the target. Hand would fit the bill. Aroldis is thankfully gone. He's still effective at times (like the first half last year), but he also goes through periods he's decidedly average (like the 2nd half). He's got the name and pedigree, but I think there's equally effective lefties to be had for Brewers sized wallets. I love the idea of Santana coming back if no one bites on his higher asking price. His defense at first was top notch and he can DH and pinch hit.I could see him getting 200-300 ABs and bring power off the bench as well as spell Hoskins at 1st. Only thing I'd do differently is prioritizing one more starter like Lorenzen or Luzardo on a one or two year deal. Miley is one of my favorite pitchers, I'd just like to see him as a #4 starter to keep his innings down.
  18. Exactly as I see him.. He tired at the end and he looked like the long season took a toll. His uni hung like it was on a hanger. But at his best, he hits line drives and is the only guy who impressed me with his small ball skills. He won a game with his improved bunting when he came back and he did the little things that advance runners and was almost flawless on the base paths with his speed. He is not an analytics darling.. but he was in the middle of winning many games. I truly hope Adames gets packaged before the season so we can move Brice to SS and get a solid 3B brought in.
  19. Doubt Burnes goes anywhere until the trade deadline, if at all.. Surprised Adames is still around but we have holes to fill and he should net a decent return.
  20. I look forward to seeing Black and Wilken progress in Brewers uniforms. In the short term, I hope Black gets time at 3rd, 2nd and 1st but get 400+ ab's this season. Wilken could force the issue if he can keep his .OBP over .320 with his power.. I'd still love to see Adames dealt and Turang at SS for years to come (yes, his bat needs to mature, but Ozzie was a .220 hitter early on and he is considered one of the best all around SS ever now). One more established starter on a one year contract, maybe a one year 3B and bring Santana back and we're good to go.. I'm excited, even if the Cubs are making serious noise concerning the remaining FA'S
  21. He had already stopped hitting before the foul ball.. For the second year in a row it was clear he went from hitter to hacker after a decent start and expanded his strike zone once summer rolled around and both his contact and offensive desire to hustle waned until September. He showed little remorse about his offensive failures while his clowning around struck a bad chord for many watching. It was eerily similar to Orlando Arcia's Brewers history. Lots of energy, a good first season then falling in love with the dugout cameras while his performance tailed off badly. I think Counsell's management style may have played into boths regression. Arcia got back to business in Atlanta and became an All Star, being utilized better. I hope Murph can keep the young guys energies focused on the task at hand rather than clowning around in the dugout while giving 75% effort far too often. Watching Willy strike out and hitting into double plays while running 3/4 speed in clutch situations became the norm until September. Then we saw him revert to his better form, raising his OBP over .300 in the last few weeks. He's good, but a team with management that holds him accountable may be a better venue for him.
  22. Great, knowledgeable insights that I don't find on other Brewers pages.. rational responses instead of insults and ego...A pleasure
  23. Yeli at 1st solves 1B in house with much better offense. Or Black, if he isn't a good fit at 3rd..
  24. Black has gotten far less ink than the 23 and 24 freshmen, but I think his contribution will be significant. He's a bat we need, with the speed of Black, Yeli, Turang and Frelick, I'm hoping Murph is going to stress runner advancement..Add Chourios potential RBI bat and this offense can rock!
