  1. Yes, how strange of DIFelice (notice the second letter of his last name) to be facing two lefties in a row.
  2. X, The scouts are not very high on Green, with most seeing him maxing out as an average 2nd baseman or utility bench player. I tend to agree with them, that he doesn´t have the ceiling to be a starting 3b in the majors. I hope I´m wrong and he tears up AA. But to trust him to be our future 3b I think is to set ourselves up for disappointment.
  3. And would adding those instructors at each level automatically increase the rate at which a player improves defensively? Could such a thing even be quantified? So who is to know whether it would be worth it or not? If having the instructors means one or two less errors per year, is that worth the money being handed out?
  4. It might be a bit too early to know that though. If he comes back in early June and rakes the rest of the year, he could earn his way onto the ball club. Many players go from AA to the majors, and if he can prove that AA pitching is no longer a challenge to him, we could give him the shot of earning the spot next year. I think it was likely either way that we would have needed a one year stopgap in CF, I don´t see the injury changing that.
  5. When you factor in all of the costs related to adding a coach (looking beyond his base salary), yes, I do. Are there any other clubs out there that do the things you are suggesting the Brewers do? Also, is there such a thing as a good "rest period" where players such as Gamel need time off, especially after playing in Winter League ball? I would think that the players need some time off to let their arms rest for a few months.
  6. Last I heard, he´s only going to be out about a month, perhaps a week or two more. How does that translate into a "lost year". If he is able to come back in a month and performs well for the rest of the year, I don´t think it would be completely unheard of for him to get a September call up. I think the Brewers will probably sign someone (perhaps Cameron) to fill in at CF for a year though to give Cain a bit more time and to help push back his FA clock an extra year.
  7. I think your estimate comes in on the very low side. My guess would be a million + per year. Plus, the trouble is at the lower levels, nearly every player has defensive issues that need to be ironed out (although by the time they get to AA, those that don´t have the bats to continue get ironed out). You would need two or three coaches at each of the initial levels to get them the time needed for each player. The biggest issue isn´t with the minor league part of the system (since we do things essentially in a manor similar to the rest of the league if not more than most at the upper levels), the problem comes in our drafting, where our scouts seem to place a value more heavily on players with offensive rather than defensive polish. Is Gamel´s problem related to poor coaching? Or just being behind the eight ball when he got to the minors in the first place? I would guess that the second is much more true than the first.
  8. How much would it cost to have fielding instructors on staff to address every single player with defensive deficiencies from rookie ball on though? I think part of the reason they wait until around AA is because they can´t really determine before that point, those who look to be major league caliber players. I imagine they don´t have the resources to try to address every defensive issue in the system, and it would be a waste to do so, especially since the majority of people in the system will never make it to the big leagues.
  9. What proof do you have behind the idea that they´d move Hart to CF? Where has the organization even hinted at the possibility of that happening? After having two full seasons in right, I really would be shocked to see the Brewers move him to a more challenging defensive position. I think the Brewers are very high on Cain, and that we may see him as early as next season, assuming that he puts up the numbers that he is capable of. I could also see the Brewers giving Cameron a one year extension to provide Cain the time to develop. Our minor league system has a lot of promising OF talent, putting Gamel out there would essentially block one of our minor league system´s biggest strengths, while exaggerating our system´s biggest positional weakness (3b). Edit: I think it is very telling that management decided to put Hall out in left. If Braun goes on the DL long term, it appears like the team would call up Gamel to play 3b.
  10. Ender: Gamel has not be HISTORICALLY bad at 3b. He has been bad, but nowhere near as bad a Braun was. Gamel actually has very positive range numbers and he gets to a lot of balls, which suggests that despite his errors, he´s really not as bad a fielder as some like make him out to be. X and Crew 07: I see no way that Gamel is moved off of 3b during the season. None. The Brewers see him as the only advanced prospect at his position (whereas we have a number of solid OF prospects in the chain) so he is going to have all year to work on the 3b position. And pointing out that Hart is only going to be here one year longer, doesn´t reflect the fact that a year is a long time in the baseball world. In one year a prospect can move two levels. It´s why getting the most years out of a solid player at a position is so vitally important. Not to mention that filling an OF position with a solid bat (via FA if necessary) is a lot easier than finding a plus hitting 3rd baseman (as evidenced by the Brewers lack of ability in finding a good 3b since Cirillo departed to Seattle).
  11. Ridiculous is spelled with an I, not an E, so it is not rediculousness, but ridiculousness, sorry the misspelling of that word is perhaps my biggest pet peeve, I still don´t know why people constantly misspell it to begin with (maybe it has to do with people that mispronounce it as well). There is no long term spot for Gamel in the OF as long as we have Braun and Hart (I don´t think our organization views Hart as a CF anymore either). There is a long term spot for him at 3b, however, so it makes perfect sense that he would continue at 3rd. Plus add to that the fact that Gamel has great range at 3b, and you see why he hasn´t been moved. While he´ll never be a gold glove guy, the fact that his problems are more related to throwing rather than fielding suggest that with time he´ll likely get better. He just needs repetitions. Moving him away from 3b to fill a temporary hole is going to deprive him of the repetitions he needs at 3b.
  12. No way they bring up their top prospect to sit on the bench. At worst, he would be platooned with Hall.
  13. What would be the benefit for said player (that´s out of the league) to come forward? No player wants to be labeled a cheater and have the backlash that accompanies that. Bud has no leverage on bringing these people (if they even exist) out to confession. And even if one were to come out and confess such a thing, what hard proof would there be to the fact aside from his word vs. Arod´s? I don´t think the league can judge against an individual solely by taking a certain person at his word, and that´s the problem with this. Even in the unlikely case that someone were to come forward there would almost certainly be no hard and fast evidence aside from that person´s word vs. Arod´s. It would make Arod´s public appeal go down further (if that is possible), but if that´s the best the league can do, making the nation hate him even more than they already do, why waste your time on it in the first place? I don´t want to come across here as a huge Arod fan, I´m not. But I don´t think calling Bud to arms is the best way of dealing with this. IF this was a problem, undoubtedly it won´t be going forward lest he risk getting caught. The same goes for steroids. He once was on them, he isn´t anymore.
  14. How, exactly? If it is a gentleman´s deal between two players, the other player has nothing to gain by sharing his deal with Bud. By telling Bud, he would be painting himself as a cheater as well, and would likely be banned from the league (ala Pete Rose). I can´t imagine what it would take a player to accept that type of negative press and loss of money. On top of that, even if someone were to say that there was a deal, it becomes "he said/she said" and would lack the definitive proof needed to do anything. This is essentially what has happened in Brian Mackmanera (sp?)/ Roger Clemons situation. Without actual indisputable proof, the league is not going to be able to do anything about it. IF Arod has done it, and it´s possible he has, he is scum for doing so. But right now it is nothing but unsubstantiated rumor, and I don´t think it is worth Bud´s time to chase after any given rumor that pops up, unless there is a good chance of coming up with irrefutable evidence that said player was cheating. Otherwise it just becomes a public witchhunt, which is not good for anyone.
  15. There is a big difference between an unsubstantiated rumor, and something that can actually legitimately be looked into. Much of this Arod stuff, especially the pitch tipping, falls in the unsubstantiated rumor category. It is the job of the league to look into things that can actually be legitimately proven, not to chase after baseless rumors.
  16. I´m hoping they can get a guy who will replace Fielder in two years or so (the best power prospect available), and then grab a ton of high ceiling arms. I don´t think we have anyone currently who could step in if we were to trade Prince, and I would prefer that our team not be spending big bucks in Free Agency filling the 1b position.
  17. It is a horrible thing and tarnishes the game, but without any proof outside of a rumor, what else can be done? This is completely different than Rose´s betting as there was actual evidence to the fact that he did so. I don´t think it is the job of the commissioner to investigate every rumor that he hears about a player, but when hard evidence becomes available, that is where he has to step in. If we start having players come forward in claiming that they tipped pitches to Arod (which I doubt will happen, as it damns them as well), then yes, Bud better do something. I think more potent than the commissioner is the reaction of the public against such activities, because the public doesn´t need hard evidence to get on the case of a player.
  18. Is it really the league´s job to follow up on any rumor that they hear about any given player? These accusations seem to be more of the rumor variety rather than the solid proof with witnesses variety.
  19. They will not be costing themselves a year of LaPorta, although this does raise the chance that he could be a super 2.
  20. The most prevalent symptom of the swine flu is the fever, so I would get it checked out. They have been turning away everyone who doesn´t have the fever down here in Mexico, but if you have a fever you are admitted immediately. Never hurts to check, and it is far better to be safe than sorry.
  21. Ok, I have made a few changes to my lineup. I exchanged Salty for Weiters (got Weiters in an exchange for Marmol a week ago), who I am hoping will be up soon (making Napoli expendable). I also swapped Reynolds for Burrell (not the best move, but whatever). I dropped Giambi completely. On the pitching side, I added Jordan Zimmerman (pretty pleased with how he´s done so far), Price (off of the FA) and I have added Street. Marmol is gone, obviously. I was able to keep Carpenter on my DL. I have had a few problems though. 1) Hardy has been an absolute black hole at SS. 2) Wright hasn´t lived up to being my first round pick at this point. 3) Uggla is also off to an absolutely horrid start. 4) Napoli is great, when he plays, which is only about half the time. (Hopefully his overall numbers will bring me a nice haul when Weiters comes up)
