  1. I don't disagree with that at all, but I do think there is a Melvin factor involved as well. Which is to say, I think there is a bit of a philosophical thing in play wereby, I'm not convinced melvin really values pitching enough. I get the sense he has more interest in finding/developing the Brauns, Fielders and Escobars of the world, than he does finding/developing young pitchers, resulting in an organization that does not do a good job of finding/developing young pitchers. Gallardo, Stetter and Parra (kinda sorta) in as many years as he's been here is never gonna get it done (unless you can sign FA pitchers the way the bigger market clubs can).
  2. I wouldn't fire him necessarily, but it dawned on me this AM that this is the second year in a row that we have been unable to come up with 5 SPs late in the season. Has Attanasio not gotten involved to get CC, last year would have been as bad as what they are dealing with right now, maybe worse. Obviously every team has injuries. Looking no further than the NL Central, Lilly, Dempster, Zambrano, Carpenter, Lohse, have all spent time on the DL. Those teams have also had their share of guys not performing to expectations, but but they have survived, and have blown past the Brewers. The Brewers have floundered with regularity. I understand pitching is expensive and hard to find, but that points straight to the GM and an inability to put together any sort of pitching depth, not just in one season, but pretty much throughout his career.
  3. I would definitely try to trade Hardy for pitching. That is an easy enough sell, because most fans have heard of Escobar and can get excited about him as the SS of the future (Heck, the way Hardy has played, he might be an upgrade). I love Cameron, but I think he probably has the most value, if you could send him to the Yankees for some pitching as well, do it. I'd even be ok letting Gerrut ride out the string to see if he has any use beyond this year.
  4. Any chance the Yankees would still have an interest in Cameron? Brian Gardner just went on the DL, and their OF defense is...not good. To me there is a very logical fit there. How about Cameron in exchange for taking Hall or Suppan? As much as I like Cameron, I would be more than happy to stick Gerrut out there the rest of the year, if we could pull off a deal like that. Probably would be a pretty tough sell to the masses though.
  5. Washburn just doesn't make sense for the Brewers. Any trade they make, has to be made with an eye on a guy who will be part of the rotation in 2010 as well.
  6. What's really sad is that this is more or less the rotation for the remainder of the year. Gallardo (until he wears down anyway) Looper Parra/Bush Suppan Villa/Dillard But look on the bright side...with Hall and Suppan still on the books, there is nothing really there to suggest they will be able to make significant improvements for next year either.
  7. There is no question those two contracts pretty much crippled Doug Melvin, bot in th eoff season, and when it came to looking for ways to improve the team before the trade deadline this year. But, he made his own bed and is lying in it now. They've got ~ $20M, or roughly 25% of the total payroll tied up in two guys who produce nothing, this year, and again next year. They have negative trade value, and that money is on the books no matter what. There may have been legitimate reasons for making those mistakes, but they were mistakes none the less, and they have hamstrung this team's ability to make changes/improvements.
  8. Buy: 20%Sell: 20% Nothing: 60%
  9. If this along with Suppan's performance tonight doesn't signal its time to try to sell off some guys, nothing will. We don't need to acquire a SP, we need to acquire 2 or 3, and they better be pretty good. Anything less will simply compound the problmes they are experience now that were not properly addressed in the off season.
  10. Given the lack of pitching prospect depth, I'm not sure its such a terrible idea, if not almost a necessity. They need 5 guys, and seriously how many can they say they have for next year right now, 2, maybe 3?
  11. Well, then I say why bother? The Phillies are already better than the Brewers at nearly every position. The chances of getting to the playoffs or slim enough behins the Cardinals and Cubs already, then add the prospect of having to get past the Phillies w/Halladay in the playoffs. If a deal can be made with an eye on 2010, that's fine. If its for thos year, it has to be bog to have the necessary impact. Some 3-4 SP, doesn't do much but deplete off season/2010 trade opportunities.
  12. Probably almost none.
  13. Attanasio said tonight he believs they are a piece or two away from tipping the balance. He may be right, but they are definitley at the tipping point...make the right move and they probably have a chance. Make the wrong one and it could be disaster for a few years to come. No doubt in my mind they want to get better. Hopefully they are just ratcheting up the PR in the event they can't get the right deal done. Sure sounds like they're trying though. Save for an injury to Braun, Fielder or Gallardo in the next couple days, I don't see any way they sell at the deadline though.
  14. It may be. 3 and 4 against CIN and PIT to begin a stretch in which they have to win a lot of games, isn't gonna get it done.
  15. This would seem to be the dream scenario for the Brewers. With the off day tomorrow, lets push everyone else up a day and get him in here to start on Sunday.
  16. The keeper of the baseball etiquette handbook is heard from yet again. What a buffoon.
  17. What was the score when it happened?
  18. Well if that's the case, the Bill Hall bullet should be bitten well in advance of Jody Gerrut's. That contract which is currently making Doug Melvin's life extremely difficult as he loosk for ways to improve the team, clearly tops the mistake list.
  19. How has he been given a clean bill of health? There is a suggestion that he may be done for the year.
  20. Especially odd since he only had to come from St louis. I'm sure he wanted to go back to AZ since that was what he was planning on last night, but wouldn't you head straight to Pitt and buy new underwear? Don't these teams have cast of thousands to help with arrangements, logistics, etc?
  21. I don't see any way this makes sense for the Jays. Given the Wells and Rios contracts, I don't see any way they would take on the salary that Hardy would be due, when they could have a much cheaper Escobar for much longer instead.
  22. Did you see his last outing? Macha left him out there to explode when he didn't have to. Everyone knew he couldn't get hitters out, yet Macha threw him out there and kept him out there. A manager's biggest hammer and means to send the GM a message is the ability to put guys on the field or keep them off the field.
  23. Holy Cow! Well, there you have it. Forget Halladay, just get all the players a rabbit's foot.
  24. I have felt for the better part of the season that they are not/have not been on the same page, and many of the odd line ups and patterns have been Macha's way of trying to force DM to get him a lead off hitter. Much the way he forced Julio off the roster. With Lopez here, perhaps we'll see.
