  1. You can say that, but what exactly are you suggesting, that they should have re-signed him prior to last season? If not, I'm not sure why Melvin should be considered having done anything any differently than every other team but Oakland. Once he left and sat out last season, the Brewers frankly have no more connection to him than any other team. Maybe less in fact.
  2. This is probably true, and I tend to agree, although his trade value will certainly be higher at the deadline this year, as well as in the off season than it will be at next year's deadline. All depends on the offer, and where the Brewers see themselves.
  3. Great deal for Yo as well, as it sets him up for another nice, multi-year contract after 2015 is all goes as planned.
  4. So...IF they decide to release him, wasn't letting Schoeneweis go kind of a stupid move?
  5. At that money...total no-brainer for the Brewers.
  6. If you are going to overpay anyone, overpay a SP, not an OF.
  7. The only thing that will drive down the price on Prince is his looming free agency, and the league-wide knowledge that the Brewers have no shot at signing him. The Brewers are not alone in that boat, which significantly shrinks the market of teams that will be willing to trade for him...serious playoff contenders only. Now, take out the teams that have no real need/use for him...Yankees, Cardinals, Phillies, etc. and the pool of teams willing to give up top level prospects becomes extremely small. While I am pleased we will have him the entire season, I fear the only thing we will get in return when he does leave, is a compensation draft pick.
  8. With the money being roughly equal, the Brewers are better off keeping the SP, even if he is bad. Once he's gone, he's gone. Dollar for dollar, Byrnes would be a much bigger waste of money. The danger of course is Mahca throwing Suppan out there ahead of some other guys who should potentially be getting the starts, but that doesn't appear to be the case at the moment, so Suppan is a much better option for the brewers than Byrnes would be.
  9. I'm just glad he's not coming to Milwaukee. Whatever Kenny Williams gave up for him is too much.
  10. Pettite had similar surgery, right? He came back pretty darn strong. I'd call that a pretty bad comparison...Pettitte had started 30+ games for like 10 seasons before he had that injury, and had nowhere near the injury history that Sheets has had. He also had some help. Sheets has now had the shoulder/elbow double whammy. I don't know how anyone can take a look at his past and say that they think he's gonna come back strong for any extended period of time. Its possible, but unless he comes real cheap in years and dollars, not a chance a team like the Brewers can really take.
  11. Agreed. They can have Sheets, but it will stink watching Cameron as a Cub, which seems likely, especially when you look at the contract Figgins got. Cubs should have no trouble coming up with the money/years needed to get Cameron.
  12. As long as he isn't back as a middle of the rotation starter as he was the first time around, I have no problem with it. He's a middle inning bullpen guy, and can probably fill that role as well as anyone else they can reasonably get to do so.
  13. I am not defending it, but his motivation is pretty obvious. The Mets stink and are going nowhere. He already has his money, and if he is to stick around with a bad team for the rest of the season, he wants teh extension to 'make it worth his while.' Alternatively, the Mets release him, and he potentially has an opportunity to sign with a contender for the stretch run. Not defensing the tactic, but its really a no risk maneuver on his part. As this thread demonstrates, his reputation is already garbage, and the results will be he gets the rest of the summer off, taking no financial hit, or he goes and signs with a contender.
  14. Well then, he better hope that he gets traded to someone other than the Brewers.
  15. Well, if that's the case, we can probably scratch, Seattle, SD, and now Arizona off the list as well. If that is the way Doug thinks (which I don't believe it is), he should be fired immediately.
  16. What indication is there that Jeter should be moved to 3B? The Yankees don't need to make a trade, if they want to put ARod at DH, they can just sign a 3B, or just sign a DH. Likewise, THE New York Yankees are not going to move THE Derek Jeter to 3B for JJ Hardy. This idea just doesn't make much sense.
  17. Suppan is an overpaid SP, not an overpaid utility infielder. Kendall is a catcher, not a utility infielder. There is no reason to eat Suppan's contract when they do not have enough SP's even when he is healthy and pitching, so unless you can trade him, you hang onto him for depth. There is no good reason to pay him to walk away when you have no alternatives. You could argue that they have alternatives to Kendall, but I guess I would disagree. He will likely be gone next year, so again, no real reason to just dump him at this point. What Attansio said and did in this case is right on, and I believe he gets it, and is sincere when he says what he says.
  18. Dye will almost assuredly be back in Chicago next year. They brought in Rios because they needed a real CFer to get better defensively. Podsednik is the one with no future in Chicago, and Dewayne Wise stinks (so does Pods pretty much). Qunitin in LF, Rios, in CF, Dye in RF. Their OF is not crowded at all....Podsednik goes to the bench in '09, and possibly to the street in 2010. If anything they may be looking for another Ofer to upgrade Quintin in LF.
  19. If there was ever a time to play Gerrut and find out what they have in him, is this not it? Seems clear he is the best defensive option out there, and has demonstrated some ability to hit in the not too distant past. Why on earth would they go with Bill Hall, who just a few short days ago decided he was having enough trouble hitting that he accepted a AAA assignment. He got his 'new swing' figured out that quickly?
  20. Yeah, as I said, they had to happen in order. Unfortunately, we couldn't even get past Step 2. The rest of this season certainly could increase the likelihood of another kind of 12 Step program for many of us.
  21. This is absurd. If it isn't Melvin's fault, who's is it? To suggest their pitching woes are simply a function of injury is silly. Suppan was bad well before he got hurt. Bush is a solid pitcher and no doubt that hurt them. Para's ineffectiveness cannot be considered a surprise. A disappointment maybe, but not a surprise. The fact is, the Brewers went into this season with their fingers crossed, and anyone who thought they had a playoff capable rotation was fooling themselves. As I have pointed out previously, even with Sabathia, this is the second consecutive season they have been badly caught with their pants down late in the season where pitching is concerned. If that isn't Melvin's fault, who's fault is it?
  22. We have no shot at the post season. Mathematically, maybe, but we will not be within 5 games of either the Cubs or Cards at the end of the year. This was a trade of necessity, ala David Bell.
  23. I don't think anyone is necessarily suggesting that this move hurts. Does it help? Debatable. My disappointment is simply that its a waste. It does not imrpove the team, and they are in no way good enough to go to the playoffs, so instead of going out and getting Claudio Vargas, go out and get something in return for Mike Cameron, Craig Counsell, etc. If you can't improve the team this year, you should be trying to improve it next year and beyond. Perhaps they tried to do that, but I kinda doubt it.
  24. No. This provides no salary relief for the Brewers, in fact it makes things worse, and doesn't do much to improve the pitching. Would just end up in the same position they are in with Hall and Suppan for the next several years -- paying way to much money for a guy(s) who can't play, severely limiting your ability to make other moves.
