  1. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif You could find that example on any team in the league. We can properly use the bullpen one of two ways. Leave starters like Davis, Ohka and Santos out there for a couple extra innings whe nthey're getting killed so you don't need to use the bullpen as much. Granted you'll be losing 9-2, but heck, it'll save the bullpen. Or, they could go out and just get a couple extra relieble relievers. That should be easy. I know guys like Obermueller, JDLR, Botallico, Lehr have been bad because they've been misused. Please! The bullpen isn't bad because of misuse, the bullpen is bad because the bulk of the guys out ther can't get hitters out. BTW, if there were more reliable guys in the rotation and in the pen, a guy like Santana wouldn't have to work more than one inning. I'm sure Ned yost would love that, but when your starter doesn't get out of the 4th or 5th inning, he doesn't really have a choice now does he? Please don't try to argue that Ned Yost is the reason for the weak bullpen. Weak pitchers are the reason for the weak bullpen.
  2. So by your own admission, the bullpen is not very good. The bullpen is fine for a bad team, is that it? If that is the standard, Chris MacGruder is fine.
  3. Regardless of how you feel about the decision, this has to be the funniets comment of this entire discussion... - endaround
  4. Please, please, please tell me you are either joking or have been out of the country the past couple weeks. Turnbow is the only truly reliable guy out there and he just blew a save last week. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif
  5. Fine. So with 2AB's left for each team and hindsight aside, what gives you the best chance to keep guys like Pujols, Edmunds, Eckstein, Grd, etc.from scoring again, Ben Sheets who was at 80-ish pitches and had been completely lights out, or the Brewer bullpen? There is only one correct answer, and it certainly isn't the bullpen. I have no doubt, that was the bigger concern for Yost. If MacGruder comes up with a hit there, you have Sheets with a chance to hold a 1 run lead at least through the 8th and then go to Turnbow if you want. If the Brewers fail to score in the 7th, you still have two more AB's with the top of the order due up (after MacGruder) where every batter represents the tying run. Especially considering the Brewer bullpen, that decision for me anyway was a no-brainer.
  6. Right or wrong, it was not downright anything. Close call maybe. I believe it was the right move for one reason -- our bullpen sucks. Whether the outcome of that inning is a one run defecit, tie score or one run lead, who would you rather have in there to have to face the likes of Eckstien, Edmonds, Pujols, Grud, etc.? Ned was obviously far more comfortable having sheets try to keep the Cards off the scoreboard, than he was going to the bullpen. Seeing what that bullpen has done of late, how anyone can argue otherwise is beyond me. That situation should be viewed as an indictment of the bullpen, and Doug Mevin who put it together, far more than it should nbe an indictment of Ned Yost who justifiably had little confidence in the bullpen in that situation (nor did I) and pushed the button he did.
  7. Maybe the Brewers and Cubs should just play eachother the rest of the season. Somebody has to win.
  8. Not today necessarily, but in the series overall, yes I do.
  9. The real lesson of Sheets hitting in the 7th is simple. Our bullpen is bad! That move should be viewed by all as an indictment of the bullpen more than an indictment of Ned. He obviously had no interest in turning a 1-1 or 1-0 game over to the likes of Wise, Santana, and Co. After what we have seen the past couple weeks, I don't see how anyone can have real strong disagreement with that when Sheets was at what 80-85 itches, and had given up 2 hits. Obviously Sheets gave it up, but with two AB's to go, I was far more comfortable having Sheets go out there to try to keep the Cardinals off teh baord than I would have been with anyone from that bullpen, whether the Brewers get 0,1, even two runs in the 7th.
  10. I disagree. Their players played good - especially the pitchers. Ours didn't becaue I don't care how many time people try to claim this was some sort of AAA line-up, their players are better than ours - especially the pitchers.
  11. I oretty much agree with HOFFY. I think the effort was there, but a pretty flat perfromance (Ben Sheets aside, and I actually think Doug Davis pitched hard last night). The point I especially agree with and have made before... Not ready for prime time.
  12. Because playing without a CF can severely limit your chances of winning a game.
  13. As usual, this game was over when Suppan's name was written on the line-up card.
  14. When did say you did? I mentioned no names, and I'll take your word for it, but I sure didn't see many others who did the same.
  15. Sounds a little like a modestly talented .500-ish team with no room for error.
  16. Two bad throws...two more runs. Great job guys.
  17. Two bad throws...two more runs. Great job guys.
  18. First time here during a game? The motto for most here who try to convince themselves that Ned Yost is the reason the Brewers are bad...if you can't second guess, don't guess at all.
  19. How on earth was any of that the wrong thing to do? You would have what? Pulled Sheets? Had him hit away? What? Great, so you bring Wes Helms in who maybe gets the run in. An uncertainty to begin with, then you have the ever dependable Brewer bullpen working in a tie game. Yippie. You like your chnaces of a win better in that scenario or letting Sheets continue to shut them down and take two more cracks at getting a run in? Keeping Sheets in the game and staying out of the double play was absolutley the right call.
  20. Bunt, and for God's sake get it down. I'd rather risk the K than the DP.
  21. If you take sheets out, the one run you score hear may mean nothing after the bullpen gives it up.
  22. Looks like he needed to throw a shut out to get us teh TIE today.
  23. I assume that doesn't even include the 0-3 and six or so pitches he has seen from Suppan today.
