1. The Brewers are dead to me. I think my new favorite team is the Indians. Or maybe the Red Sox. For real though, if the Brewers suddenly ceased to exist (which, for all intents and purposes, they might as well) what team would you pick up as "your team"? Although I've developed something of a dislike for the Cardinals since they are a division rival and always seem to whip us, I've always respected their organization. The fact that they have dragged themselves off the mat and back into the rat-race with the Cubs and Brewers has made my respect for them grow even more. It also helps that they are a nemesis of the Chicago Cubs. So that would probably be my favorite team if there was no Milwaukee Brewers. What would yours be?
2. Fan Graphs has the playlogs up from last night's game, and for what it's worth, the Rockies were listed as having a 50.9% chance to win the game when Torrealba came up to bat with the bases loaded and nobody out.
3. I was just looking, and the Rockies didn't have any outs when they were down by 2 with the bases loaded. The first out of the inning was made after the game was tied. So, in that situation (bases loaded, no out, down 2), the Rockies probably had right around a 50% chance to win the game.
4. Jenkins currently ranks second on the team (behind only Prince) in Win Probability Added. That stat takes game situations into account quite a bit, so that means Jenkins has been contributing when it matters and that his hitting has been helping to create wins for the Brewers.
5. According to ESPN, the Baltimore Ravens haven't allowed 30 points since 2005. Unreal.
6. Good looking graph Russ. It looks like tonight will be a gradually sloping blown win probability rather than one that suddenly spikes in the 9th. That means we get 3 full hours of agony instead of just 10 minutes!
7. Oooh. The meltdown is already starting! I'm going to go grab some popcorn...
8. 3-0. This seems like a safe lead if I've ever seen one. Game over.
9. <font size="4"> OBP SLG OPS vs LHP .350 .400 .750 vs RHP .300 .350 .650</font> That's what I've been trying. That's how I've always done it. It seems to work with the tags like 1992casey said, but with the tags, it keeps shifting the top line on me.
10. OBP SLG OPS vs LHP .350 .400 .750 vs RHP .300 .350 .650 For some reason, this keeps happening. The top line keeps shifting all the way to the left. How can I correct this?
11. "Stop complaining. It's a long season. The sky isn't falling. Do you expect the Brewers to win every game? It's early. We're still in first place!" Oh wait...
12. Not sure if this has been covered anywhere in the thread yet, but I can't seem to figure out how to post evenly spaced charts. Before the cutover, there was a "CODE" button you could use, that would allow you to copy and paste charts that were nicely alligned. Is there anyway to do this now?
13. Everytime this happens, I die a little bit inside...does that count?
14. And, here's another one... http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/4692/graphiv7.jpg Unbelievable. Our pitching staff is pathetic. Seriously, how many times can this happen? It's beginning to defy logic. What a miserable homestand.
15. Many people liked Gross, a lot, before this season even started. Many people thought it was a complete crock that Tony Gwynn Jr. was getting a bunch of playing time earlier in the year while Gross had to sit on the bench. So it's not really fair to paint a picture where people suddenly only like him because he's on a hot streak.
16. He takes pitches. He draws walks. He is capable of carrying a very high OBP. He has 15 homeruns in just over 300 at-bats during 2006-2007. I'm so glad that this guy spent a majority of the year guy riding the pine or at AAA while Gwynn and Mench gobbled up plate appearances for the Brewers!
17. this team has earned our respect How? By constantly swinging for the fences like a bunch of bigshots, and only being able to score runs with solo homers? They lead the NL in HR by a good margin, yet are 6th in runs scored. Maybe it's the fact that we boast 4 starting pitchers who have an ERA near or above 5. Or perhaps some people are impressed by the Brewers ability to play little league calibur defense, while the rest of the league is actually able to execute simple fundamentals. There is a lot of talent on this team, but I think they have a long way to go in earning respect as a solid baseball team.
18. Chris Capuano STINKS. Rickie Weeks STINKS. BOOO!!!
19. Generally, I support the boo-birds of major league baseball because I think it is part of the game. If a guy acts like a jerk, boo him. If a player isn't hustling, boo him. If a guy bolts your team to sign a big contract elsewhere, boo him. If your team is really stinking up the joint, I think booing is an acceptable way to show displeasure and vent some emotion. However, I think the booing has gotten out of control lately in Milwaukee. A lot of it doesn't even make sense. It should be reserved for the sports' biggest jerks, and your team's most pathetic on-the-field play. I was pretty surprised when Helms got booed a few years back on opening day while he was still a Brewer. He struggled some, but I never thought it was for lack of effort. I thought that booing was classless. I also don't understand booing a guy like Brady Clark who busted his butt for years with us, or booing a starting pitcher who gives up 2 or 3 runs in an inning.
20. That's true. He came out and talked to Suppan before pulling him. The inning before they showed Suppan breathing with a towel held over his face by the trainer. If Suppan was pulled because he was gassed, then obviously it was the right decision. If a guy says he's done, he's done, and I obviously would think Ned made the right decision to remove him. That's why I added the "unless there was something going on with Soup we didn't know about" disclaimer in my original post. However, if he pulled him for strategical purposes, then I would still say I disagree with the decision.
21. I'm sick of seeing win probability graphs that look like this: http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/3163/graphbm7.jpg
22. I don't disagree that he utilized the bullpen well after pulling Suppan, and you're probably right that leaving Suppan in may have opened him up for criticism as well. I don't think the "damned if he does, damned if he doesn't" argument is good cause for not still examining what the best move was. I happen to think that with a tired and depleted bullpen, and a 5 run lead, Suppan should have been given a longer leash. At some point, you have to trust your starting pitching to get deeper into some ballgames. If a 5 run lead, worn out bullpen, pitch count of 83 and only 1 run allowed isn't a situation you will trust your starter with, what is?
23. Considering how much our bullpen has been over-used over the past few weeks, I was pretty surprised to see Suppan get pulled after only 5.2 innings of work. Unless there was something wrong with him that we are unaware of, I think he should have been left in there. He was pretty much cruising along, we had a 5 run lead, the bullpen seriously needed to be rested, and one of the main reasons we supposedly signed Suppan is his durability and knack for eating up innings. I'm not saying that decision won or lost the game today, but if you give Suppan a chance to go 7-8 innings intead of 5.2, our bullpen would be in better shape for the rest of the week. We still don't have a day off until Thursday.
24. Pretty shocking that an 0-10 pitcher threw his best game of the season against the Brewers. And by shocking, I obviously mean totally predictable. In the span of a month, the Brewers have now given up 6 games of their division lead. Their performance on the road is sickening. Two of our best players are guys that got called up during the middle of the season. Teams can't win a lot of ballgames with two rookies doing all of the heavy lifting. Most of the veterans have been a joke. Guys like Jenkins and Suppan need to step up real soon and start earning their paychecks, or the Brewers are going to have a real tough time getting into the playoffs.
25. I'm getting pretty tired of seeing these types of win probability graphs out of the Brewers: http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/7669/graphfo5.jpg
