  1. I can't wait to see the JS headline for tonight's game. I imagine something like: Manny Parra nearly implodes during 6th inning of lucky start; Nats let him off hook
  2. I would say definitely not for the immediate future. If we trade our cheap young bullpen arms, the result will be over-spending on guys like Eric Gagne, LaTroy Hawkins, Trevor Hoffman, etc. I'll pass on that idea.
  3. More importantly, them and the Reds. We also have to outplay the Cubs. It's just not going to happen.
  4. Unfortunately, I don't think the team sees things that way.
  5. Right, but I really don't see this as taking a stand though. Like you stated, he's obviously not willing to give up anything too meaningful to make his "stand" -- just an exhibition game that doesn't take place until a year from now. If he was willing to boycott all activities/games in Arizona, and be willing to deal with the consequences (including potentially giving up a lot of money), it might appear more serious. This All-Star game threat seems like half-hearted posturing to me I guess.
  6. I guess I really don't understand how the all-star game has relevance to the issue. If he's truly boycotting the state, why isn't he refusing to play all games in Arizona? And, it's not like the Diamondbacks or Major League Baseball really have anything to do with this issue...
  7. True, but even in that case the return would still theoretically be declining between now and then, albeit not by the same degree as waiting until next year's deadline. And the only reasons to keep Fielder the rest of this season would be either aiming for the postseason (with a minuscule chance), or trying to squeeze out a few extra wins to get near .500. I don't think either of those goals is a good enough reason to risk getting any lesser of a return.
  8. I can imagine -- if the team trading for him was only getting to use him for a few months. Outside of the low RBI total, he's not really hitting that badly. His OBP is still over .400, and he ranks 4th in the NL in that category. His OPS is in the top 15 in the NL as well. Do you really think that a half-season worth of poor RISP hitting is really going to deter a team more than missing out on a full extra year of controlling him???
  9. The urgency comes from the fact that their trade value is declining, since each day/week/month that passes is less time that the acquiring team will have them. Therefore it would stand to reason that they'll give up less to get these players if they control them for less time. It's interesting that you mention needing to "settle" because if the team waits until the trade deadline next year to move Fielder, setting is exactly what they'll have to do. They'll have painted themselves into a corner, because there is no way Fielder is going to sign an extension. They will only be able to offer a half-season of Fielder, rather than a full year-and-a-half. And other clubs will know we have to move him, so we will have absolutely no leverage. And for what? To cling to the hope that the team is not mathematically eliminated yet this year? Hart and Weeks are a similar case, but at least with them there is a chance they could be re-signed. Letting Fielder walk for picks, or getting a poor return due to holding on to him too long would be devastating to the future of the franchise. It sucks, but part of remaining consistently competitive in a small market means flipping some of the best players your system produces before they become free agents and have the opportunity to walk away leaving you with nothing but memories -- which is exactly what Prince Fielder will do if we let him.
  10. What exactly have they done so far that indicates they're headed in that direction? They haven't traded anyone yet, and what they're saying (whether it's posturing or not) indicates they still think they have a chance to go for it this year.
  11. Suppan struggled yesterday, again, against a pretty sorry Houston offense. 4.2 IP, 4 ER 7 H, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
  12. John Axford, and Deputy Russell Clank from "The Crazies." http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6347/axfordclank.jpg
  13. And then you have to factor in the team's terrible defense as well.
  14. If anybody is to blame, I'd say it's Ken Macha for overusing Gallardo this year and last year.
  15. So, what the thinking is, is that if we throw a pile of cash (or prospects) at a veteran impact pitcher, and everything goes right, we might have a shot at contending. I don't like this plan. I'd much trade Fielder in the hopes of improving the club beyond 2011.
  16. Another costly error today by Escobar, and he was picked off on the basepaths as well. Maybe it wouldn't be the worst idea to send him down for some seasoning, and let Counsell and somebody else platoon for awhile.
  17. That's kind of how I have been viewing it. Obviously there is a different kind of a learning curve for hitting, because every level you move up you're facing tougher pitching. Same with pitching, as at every level you're facing tougher hitters. But defense should remain kind of a constant. Besides, Escobar wasn't supposed to be a work-in-progress defensively, he was supposed to be major league ready. I haven't seen much out of him that makes me think he's going to be anything that special defensively. Certainly not a phenom. So far, he looks more like an above-average defender in the making.
  18. Anthony Witrado continues his personal crusade against Manny Parra. I really don't understand his disdain for Parra. And I really find his articles unpleasant to read in general.
  19. "Hey, Soul Sister" by Train would be my guess.
  20. What he "always" does? This is only his third full big league season, I don't really see how that's possible. He hit an understandable wall at the end of his first year, and then struggled early in 2009 before stabilizing somewhat later in the year. This year, there have been no blowups to speak of. I do agree with you, however, that he's a long way away from being relied upon to anchor down a #2 spot in the rotation. I think the potential is definitely there though. In response to the original poster's question, I think the obvious choice for removal from the starting rotation has to be Narveson. I'd prefer the rotation to stay the way it is, because it has the most potential with an eye toward the future. However, I don't think there's any way (due to his salary) that Davis doesn't get inserted back into a starter's role. Best case scenario would be if he could make a couple of good starts and maybe we could flip him at the trade deadline, or possibly later on through a waiver trade.
  21. I think you're taking this a bit far. This thread was just about how the Brewers hadn't really fared well against the Twins in recent years. That's just a fact, and people like to beat Minnesota because they're a border state rival. People weren't really attempting to draw definitive conclusions about team talent/success, as you seem to be implying. If we wanted to do that, all we would have to do would be to compare each franchises records over the past ten years, and we'd have a pretty clear answer.
  22. A lot of people here seem to be missing the point. It's not about this one game. It's about repeated high pitch counts, and cumulative abuse dating back to last year when he was coming off a season in which he had only pitched 24 innings due to injury.
  23. I'm not. I'm terrified that if he has 2 poor starts in a row he'll get pulled from the rotation. Touché. Ken Macha is always lurking. And more importantly, Melvin lurking behind him waiting for an opportunity to jam Doug Davis back into the rotation.
  24. I'm not. I'm terrified that if he has 2 poor starts in a row he'll get pulled from the rotation.
  25. Remember how Manny Parra spent the first 6 weeks of the season in the bullpen? Yeah, that was really not very smart.
