Love it! I'd put Ortiz in the #2 slot personally, and let Chourio and Contreras bat 3rd respectively in your scenarios, but I get your sentiment. I think Chourio and Contreras have the better odds of hitting that HR, so getting the OBP guys up there before they come up (not to mention the base stealing threat to get them in scoring position). That would seem to hedge the bets a bit more in my mind...

Agreed, he has to go after batters and induce soft contact earlier in counts. He has a great defense behind him. I think the whole staff is worried about giving up the long ball, which they should be, but they often end up trying to get guys to swing at stuff way off the plate. Burnes did the same thing when he was here, running up his pitch counts going after the strikeout. Does Peralta even have what we'd call the out-pitch? He's got good speed and command, but doesn't seem to have that nasty pitch that he can rely on. I thought he had a curveball that just dropped off the earth earlier in his career?

Certainly agree Chourio has had a well-timed breakout, but one must wonder what the offense looks like still having Yelich in there with Chourio's surge. Then you could effectively remove one of Frelick, Perkins or Mitchell's more pedestrian performances. What could've been... That's why winning a World Series is so special - takes almost everything to go right and getting hot at the proper time. I really enjoy this team (their scrappiness), but I don't think they have enough yet to feel confident if they get down by a few runs against the real powerhouses. Coming back to win the last 2 of 4 from the Dodgers was impressive, no doubt. They could've easily given up at that point, but they stood their ground. I'll be watching that Phillies series closely...

Yep, I'd give Hicklin the nod at this point. We've seen what Black adds to this team, and it just hasn't moved the needle to this point. We're at a point where you have to either get Sanchez into games more often for that power potential, or try Hicklin. Replacing the impact of Yelich's game is tough this time of year...

Interesting take! That'd throw some serious strategy into it. I like the idea of having these starters throttle back a bit and find a way to lengthen their outings by learning to pitch - not just flamethrow. Maybe that'd reduce some of these TJ surgeries.

Recency bias from Joe Zarr's article the other day has me cringing a bit. If he's not right, he probably needs to stay down there and figure out what's missing from his fastball grip or arm angle, or move a bit along the rubber one way or another. Otherwise, it feels like they may be ready to cut bait on Joe Ross, doesn't it? He only signed a one year deal for $1.75M, so it won't hurt all that bad to cut him, and he doesn't seem to be particularly effective anyway. The rest of the guys are in there doing their thing. Hopefully Mears settles in a bit more after that debut game. These are the horses you have, so ride 'em!

Seems Perkins and Chourio were listening last night! Monasterio gave it a shot, but the strikeout didn't help him...

I put the blame squarely on Chourio. That was a rookie mistake, and the team paid for it.

Did the Brewers Do Enough at the Deadline?
Kripes - Brewers replied to Jason Wang's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
Yeah, I'm leaning toward they laid an egg here. Look, Weimer was extraneous, but to put all that potential and control together with Junis (who arguably has better numbers anyway) in a package for a rental is basically throwing good money after bad. A complete roll of the dice, albeit an expensive one, which isn't likely to move the needle. Flaherty clearly could've been gotten for that package - so what if he ends up hurt? At least you tried for the clear upgrade. Trading Blalock for Mears seems like a reach too. Civale I can live with. Yandy Diaz should've been a target. Time will tell, but this doesn't have the feel of an improved team for a playoff run against the Phillies nor the Dodgers. Nobody else in the division got much better either, but this is shaping up to be another very short October for Brewers fans... -
Article: 2024 MLB Draft Day 1 Thread
Kripes - Brewers replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Begs the question of - can you actively play chess with another team (trying to pick someone they want) if you are playing the draft slot money game against the players themselves?! Like 4D chess! lol- 337 replies

I can't say I'm any more worried than I was opening week, to be honest. Being a fan of the Brewers is mentally draining itself! lol I think they'll benefit from the break, and if they can swing a trade for a real deal pitcher, I think that provides the spark they'll need to snap outta this little funk and start building for a push to the finish. Hoskins really has to just be better. I'd trade Adames, but that's not a popular take here (not that I don't like him as a role player, I simply want them to be smart and get a return for him). I'd probably cut bait with Bauers at this point too. This is a pretty young team, and that'll come in handy if they can get that spark and really gel in the next 3-4 weeks.

Heck yeah there should be concern! They're winning games against marginal teams, yet getting exposed by the good ones. Somehow the pitching staff is keeping it together through mostly sheer will; certainly not with overwhelming talent (no offense intended). That'll get you a playoff spot. Super. What are you gonna do when you get there? Hope for the best? That's not a strategy. Yes, you generally see a team get hot and stun some folks, and I suppose the Brewers are due. Getting that timely home run is awesome, but more often than not you see a GIDP or strikeout with RISP with this team. I'm glad to see the team moving toward having lots of baserunners, and I think the Padres made the move of the year to this point by adding Arraez. That's the move the Crew should've made, adding a guy that gets on base almost at will. He'd have replaced Bauers and Hoskins and I think the difference would've been remarkable. I think most fans agree the Crew needs to focus on pitching, and I'm right there with them. Another article suggests trading for Yandy Diaz, who exchanges power and Ks for avg and OBP. I think that's a winning scenario. Then go get Flaherty and see what happens...

Agreed. I think fans overestimate how the team would react about losing any player. It seems Adames is a fun guy to have around, is reliable, and I'd think he is respected as a player. At the same time, the guys also see what developed from trading Hader and what that ultimately brought to the team - much quicker than developing a QO comp pick. Guys get injured all the time, so you really can't focus too much energy when you have to slot another guy in anywhere. Yes, Adames makes some good plays - so will the next guy - for a lot less money. That's just the way it works. It's a big risk, but you don't win championships without making bold moves.
-
I've got to lean toward keeping your options open. I mean, if you can snag a Landon Knack from the Dodgers for Adames, you do it. The return has to be better than the comp pick lottery ticket. Then you make the trade for Tyler Anderson and Luis Rengifo from the Angels to replace Adames (Ortiz or Turang to SS), and you've suddenly filled in your holes. That's just a few of the dozens of scenarios that I'm sure the front office is considering. Do I think they do it? Probably not. But I don't think the Crew is realistically set up to go far in the playoffs as currently constructed, so getting nothing for Adames is foolish. The only way to compete with the big spenders is to make bold moves and stick to the Rays/Guardians playbook and keep stocking the farm when your regulars get too expensive to keep around.
-
Either pitcher there offers merits, as would Rengifo. Why? Because you have to trade Adames this summer. That's how this team keeps a strong farm system. I can't say I want to trade him, but if you want to keep churning value, you have to stick to the gameplan. The trade has to net you greater value than the QO comp pick, and other teams (Dodgers) know that. I think Anderson, with his higher salary, is likely to be cheaper in prospect capital. Add Anderson & Rengifo, subtract Adames, and you may even things out as far as prospects gained/lost, spend a bit more money, but gain the pitcher you desperately need. That's the best scenario I've seen so far...

Tend to think he's not throwing the heat to increase the odds he makes it through the season unscathed - money decision. It was fun while we had him, although frustrating that he could never get further into games. He'd run his pitch count up there too high, too quickly. Rarely ever did he get enough run support. Oh well, he's due to make bank next year.
-
Great question, for which there probably isn't one single answer. Based on their relatively improved contact ability (compared to most years), I'd offer situational hitting. When you have a guy in scoring position with no outs, aim to drive the ball somewhere and get on base without chasing bad pitches; one out, bunt or try to hit a fly where they ain't in order to move them over (if you're not a typical power guy); two out, choke up, make solid contact toward a gap. That's just simply easier said than done, but these are supposed to be the best players in the world and you have to change your approach from just swinging for the fences every at bat. They're less a home run team, and more of a contact team, but you gotta try to play small ball with the contact to keep guys circulating the base paths - certainly in close games. One of you stat guys can find the RISP numbers for this team and see where they rank.
-
Agreed, but there isn't anyone else yet to even start wrapping your head around the possibility. Pretty doubtful Junis comes back and blows the doors off, same with Ross, DL Hall, Ashby and you can keep going down the roster. Right now they're all 4s and 5s, so it's going to be painful at the trade deadline. Gotta see what you can get by packaging a few of those guys with lower ceilings if you can and try to at least get a #2 guy outta that - and that guy probably won't have much control left after the season. That's the painful part.

I think this Philly series would've been a great opportunity to call up some of those young guys like Blalock and Patrick. You knew this series was likely going to be rough anyway, and they were destined to keep burdening the bullpen. Gotta figure out what you've got, either to use them now or showcase them for a potential trade to get some semblance of a rotation worthy of a deep playoff run. Peralta, Ray and question mark is simply not going to cut it.
