  1. Well, this spring so far per the Brewers roster pages at MLB.com: Turang: .207/.324/.310 OPS .634 in 29 ABs - 4 SO/3BB Monasterio: .258/.281/.290 OPS .571 in 31 ABs - 10 SO/1BB Ortiz: .261/.393/.522 OPS .915 in 23 ABs - 7 SO/5BB Miller: .241/.267/.345 OPS .612 in 29 ABs - 6 SO/1BB Dunn: .286/.390/.486 OPS .876 in 35 ABs - 14 SO/6BB Capra: .316/.381/.421 OPS .802 in 19 ABs - 5 SO/2BB Frelick .314/.415/.457 OPS .872 in 35 ABs - 7 SO/5BB Adames: .222/.276/.407 OPS .683 in 27 ABs - 11 SO/2BB Just a quick snapshot of what we're likely to expect...
  2. No kidding! Collins with that OBP and tidy 18% strikeout rate. Arm must be a little iffy, but boy would that be nice batting leadoff...
  3. Uribe makes 103 look smooth and easy. That kid just shines on the mound. Not sure how anyone can locate pitches throwing that hard. If he can keep command, he is the legit game ender for years to come. But there are a few guys, as noted, who can handle that spot. I expect Murphy to go with matchups until he finds a recipe he is comfortable with.
  4. Looking at the box score from last night's loss to the Cubs - 16 Ks vs 2 walks, 12 hits in 39 at bats. 3 for 16 with RISP. That is not a recipe for many wins. That's a 41% team K rate. It's one spring training, but that's not showing me any sort of discipline that Murph has been preaching.
  5. Well, we hear a lot of people saying they want people who know how to pitch, not just throw. Seems to be how Rea is approaching his craft. It has a lot to do with keeping the batters uncomfortable; changing speeds and using the zone, but locating pitches with accuracy often. Get in there and get outs, be efficient. Pretty good defense behind you, so rely on them.
  6. Sounds like he's staying within himself and not reaching for power. I was shocked later last night when they announced Turang locked up 2B for opening day. It's a long season, but they can't let him linger there if he's sub-.200 very long. This offense is going to have a hard enough time generating runs the way it is. Rooting for him having a "quantum leap", but put me on the skeptical list...
  7. I'm not sure these need to be mutually exclusive. If they want Davis, they can go get him; trading Adames could still be done for the right offer. Pitching is always at a premium, so loading up on those prospects is always smart. I too would want to use those savings on Monty, then we don't have to see more articles about our so-so rotation! Looking down the road, it is quite likely that the path for NLCS goes through LA. You'd hate to give them the missing piece and face them in October!
  8. Monty would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath. Sounded like Davis was hitting the ball well before all that stuff went down. It's hard to pin down who they've got in mind for 2B and 3B right now. Turang was so bad with the bat that he's going to start the year in AAA I'd bet. Ortiz was holding his own. Capra and Dunn are getting some 3B time in, but I haven't gotten the chance to watch any of them yet and see if they pass the eye test - Murphy seems high on them from what I read. Miller, Monasterio and Arroyo seem to be battling for utility. Wes Clarke is putting up some numbers, but Tyler Black doesn't seem to be hitting his way onto the club yet. JD Davis could be had, maybe even for the league minimum depending on that Giants business. Frelick was getting some time in the dirt, but he's not a full time answer there (yet). Anybody attending some live games out there? Who is opening eyes and just looking great so far?
  9. For what it's worth, Bauer is blackballed. He's not coming back to MLB. I think we have to keep in mind that playing in this league is still a privilege. Looks like German may have used up his chances too. I just don't see anyone short of Monty moving the needle. People remember Lorenzen for that no-hitter, and while that deserves attention, it doesn't make up for the marginal results over the course of the entire season - in my book. At that point, you may as well see what you've got in some of the young guys versus the cost of a short term contract with any of the mid-tier guys mentioned.
  10. This team already has mid-tier guys. I don't think Murphy would want to upset the apple cart by bringing in any of those guys. Montgomery is a different story. Pitchers see a workhorse like him come in and it lifts the whole squad. I think (hope?) Arnold and Attanasio are watching him closely.
  11. I mean, who isn't rooting for Ollie and Sal?! I'm not enamored with power numbers - I'd prefer contact guys who drive the ball. Both of these dudes do that, and not just to their pull side. Homers are great, but to maximize their impact on a game, you need guys on base in front of those bashers, and these are the guys that can do that. Anyone can go up there and strike out. What I'd like to see is guys who are selective and know what they are looking for. Take a lot of pitches; make the pitchers work. Get deep into counts so they get tired, anxious and make mistakes (not only for you, but the guys behind you).
  12. Yeah, nothing glamorous here. However, I'll take our rotation options unkowns/upside versus the NL central field going into this season. Would I like to see a Monty signing, yes. A solid 6'6" lefty to come in as the #2-3 guy, absolutely on a short term deal, you betcha! Certainly worth a shot just to keep him away from another NL central team. Every win counts, and every win you deny the other teams in your division matters. This would be a super chess move.
  13. Let's face it, Adames will get offered the QO and be gone after this year. I don't see the Crew being so far out of the mix that they'll be in a position to trade him before the deadline. The Yelich contract was a big risk for the club, even with him coming off those incredible MVP years, so extending Willy with his hot and cold streaks has near-zero odds. He's fun to watch and it feels good to know he's in the lineup, but not worth an extension at the price the market likely will offer. I'm hoping Wilken develops. Once 3B has an everyday power hitting solution, relying on the SS or 2B position for power in the lineup is unnecessary, so your attention returns to defense for those positions, which the Crew has.
  14. I think this is old school baseball, and certainly refreshing to hear. With this lineup, he doesn't really have much choice. If you don't have the power (Turang, Frelick, Miller, Monasterio, Dunn, Capra, Ortiz), you've got to maximize your on-base capabilities with solid contact and pitch selection combined with baserunning skills and speed. We'll never know what really caused Hiura's issues - coming up the dude was a doubles machine/line drive hitter, but it sure seems like he tried to go after that launch angle craze and just lost it. I really think Adames gets a little too focused on the homers too, and I think he would benefit from chilling out and reading this article daily before every game. We hear all the time that "hitting it where they ain't" is really hard with pitchers throwing 95mph+, and I don't doubt that. However, you can at least tell if a guy is thinking about finding the obvious gap and hits a worm burner to that general vicinity versus simply swinging out of his shoes - that batter is being selfish and not staying within himself and using the team approach that Murph is preaching here. I'll be watching for that early this year to see if the guys are listening. Go Crew!
