  1. I've heard that it's more stressful but I don't know if I've ever seen any science behind it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the splitter the fashionable pitch in the 70's and 80's and then someone said it leads to injuries and coaches didn't want guys throwing it anymore? I never really thrown it as a pitch but I've thrown it and you definitely can "feel" it more than other pitches. Like I said though, I've never actually seen any studies about it. It will get hitters out, and it will destroy your elbow. That pitch put Bruce Sutter in the Hall of Fame, and retired him early. No two arms are the same, you can't say for sure when it will happen, but it will happen.
  2. If Stearns could have gotten BOTH Mejia and one of Cleveland's top two prospects, I think he would have. I highly doubt he started the negotiations by undercutting what he thought he might be able to get. I can't remember which reporter said it last night, but one of them said the Brewers insisted on Frazier or Mejia, and Cleveland agreed to up the secondary pieces from where they had been if it was Mejia, so the Brewers went that way. I love Frazier, for sure, but don't be down over what the Brewers got. Keep something in mind for me - LaPorta was the "can't miss" the Indians got for Sabathia, Brantley was actually the lowest rated of the three prospects who went to Cleveland, because no one was sure where he'd fit defensively at the time. Brantley had raised his stock with a good 2008, but he wasn't going to be on any Top 100 anywhere, and he turned out to be that whole deal for Cleveland.
  3. Everybody is looking for bullpen help - Boston, Texas, Dodgers, Mets, Giants, Astros, - if you didn't get Chapman, Miller, or Melanin - you're still in the fight. Watch the Dodgers - they have SP depth to deal from. Just for example, check the stats on players 18-22 - that's what I'm looking for, a team just like that. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016?list=la
  4. Do you really think David Stearns didn't know Cleveland was looking for a relief pitcher? Really? It's been all over TV and the web for weeks. Do you remember the noise about D'Arnaud and Nimmo? As good as he is, the demand for Lucroy's position and skills just never got as high as the demand for an elite reliever. That's what happened here, and at that, I have no problem at all with what the Brewers got. Corey Ray, with no success in pro ball yet, is ranked very highly, strictly because he was a high first round pick .... Mejia is on a 42-game hitting streak, and may have the strongest arm of any catcher in the minor leagues right now ... the Brewers got him, plus three. There is no problem here.
  5. Now you see where the price for pitching is - it's off the charts right now. Jeffress isn't Miller, but stop looking down at him - he's a big deal. Jeffress is really good, he's still young, and three years of team control, don't ever overlook that, it's become a very big deal in baseball. The Brewers have said 1+2 to get Jeffress, and they just might get it.
  6. Guys, the Brewers did just fine in the Lucroy deal. Milwaukee got real talent in that trade, any scout would tell you they really did their homework - don't get hung up on what NY got, they had the hottest name on the market this time around, no matter what we wish to believe. Team control, guys, learn to love it, it matters more than you think in baseball now, especially in markets where big-ticket free agents are not an option. There was just simply more competition for Andrew Miller, and that was obvious - don't get down on what the Brewers did with Lucroy, Milwaukee got excellent value.
  7. I"m absolutely thrilled for Indians fans - I'm really glad they did this. GO FOR IT! Brewers fans, we did just fine in the Lucroy deal, relax, we got very real talent back. GO TRIBE in 2016! Cleveland and Milwaukee are very similar markets - be happy for their fans, and applaud their management for going for it when they should have.
  8. I also have to wonder if maybe we could have gotten a heavier return from Cleveland if we had included Jeffress or Smith but chose not too because those guys will net a heavy return on their own. I've tried to address this a couple of times - Stearns definitely prefers to sell players off one at a time, rather than in a package. When national media kept saying he was trying to, "package a reliever with Lucroy", I kept saying, "only if the return meets what Stearns thinks each player is worth." For Jeffress, it will take, one, "guy", and two more - I don't know how high up the list that front guy would have to be, but there is literally zero motivation to trade a player with his results, his remaining control, and his $$. If Jeffress goes, it will strictly be because someone met the return. I'm most intrigued by both Guerra and Thornburg, because they're both putting up great numbers, but both have taken people by surprise with that - so what is their trade value? I'd love to see a deal, to find that out.
  9. I second this! The last player is reported to be a pitcher, just not named yet. I simply can't imagine the Brewers' bullpen remaining intact through this process, and if there's a match for Guerra, that's a real possibility too. Milwaukee has heavily scouted the Rangers, Dodgers, Giants, and Mets, at least - all of whom are looking for pitching of one sort or another - and Cleveland still needs bullpen help too.
  10. I'm very pleased with the players the Brewers got - very pleased. I wanted McKenzie and Mejia at the top of a deal that included Smith to Cleveland and added McKenzie and one more "who's that" at the bottom of the deal. This is real talent coming to the Brewers, all three of them have a real chance to make it. No, none of them are in the top 100 of whoever's whatever - don't sweat that, the main reason for that is their youth. If you're 20, and you were not a first-round pick, you are not in the top 100, even if your play says you are. Be happy, I am.
  11. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 15s15 seconds ago BREAKING: #Brewers, #Indians in agreement on Lucroy. He still must approve trade.
  12. When the Brewers trotted out the whole bullpen in the game tonight, I figured the deal was not yet in place. That may not be accurate, but most of the rumors tie a bullpen arm into a Lucroy trade, and Counsell ran four of them out there without hesitation. If the deal is done, and if a reliever is in it, why rest Lucroy, but then use the pitcher? I believe no trade is in place yet, but I obviously think it's close.
  13. There are some here, including at times, members of player families. I posted a direct quote from Chris Capuano once, attributed to a, "source close to Capuano", per his request, and I discussed Rickie Weeks' last Brewer contract negotiations with a name anyone who has followed the Brewers since the early 90s would recognize, sharing some of that here at the time. There's a lot of great information here on this site, which is why I've been here for 11 years now. We can talk about that another time, this thread is for the Lucroy trade, but trust me, you and I are not the only ones who read this board.
  14. Every contending team needs bullpen help - every single one - don't worry about who Washington got.
  15. When you talk to people who know Nimmo, they love him. You hear about work ethic, etc - and they all say he has power potential. For some reason, Nimmo, to this point, has been a guy who launches balls in batting practice, then doesn't hit for power. If the Brewers get Nimmo, I think he'll actually become a fan favorite, but nothing about this deal makes sense to me, based on the little that has been leaked about it.
  16. Done deal, details still coming in ... Felipe Rivero is one of the players going to Pittsburgh. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/riverfe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker- Taylor Hearn also to Pittsburgh http://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.cgi?id=hearn-000tay
  17. Since none of us know what the offers have been, (if any), we really can't answer that, but I would guess Guerra's value is plenty high right now. If teams lined up to fight over Andrew Cashner, and were disappointed when Rich Hill did what he always does, and hit the DL - there is absolutely no reason for teams not to make very real offers to get Junior Guerra.
  18. He was, and he also had the batters guessing the whole night. They were reaching for pitches, then taking called strikes, because they had no idea what was coming - that's why they started swinging at the first pitch so much.
  19. Boomer, the Dodgers, Yankees, Indians and Blue Jays were there for sure, I don't know about other teams, and I don't know if that was all about Brewer players, or if some were watching Pirates too.
  20. The Rangers are willing to put both Profar and Gallo into a deal for Chris Sale, but not Mazara. If you're waiting for them to offer Mazara to get Lucroy, I have this feeling you won't get much sleep.
  21. Agents do this, yes - if you talk to them they say things like, "Jon Heyman called me", or, "I heard from Buster Olney on that." Scouts are another great source of information, especially if there is something going on with a guy they originally signed, or if a trade could somehow raise their standing within the industry. In both cases, the success of the scout or the agent is directly tied to the success of the player - and they understand the power of TV and social media.
  22. Lucroy is in tonight's lineup - at catcher.
  23. For the rest of today, I am the, "mystery fan."
