  1. BCD, I know a lot of people will see it the same way you do, and I understand why, but as I've already said in this thread, I disagree. What I've learned from your data is, it's much better to pick 7th than 4th, and also better to pick 11th than 8th. I still say it's much more about who's picking than when you pick...look at that, the Giants got Posey, Wheeler, Lincecum, and Bumgarner, one at 5, one at 6, and two at 10. That's excellent scouting right there...man am I jealous. If there was a Ken Griffey Jr talent, and I was within reaching distance of the top pick, only then, might I play for the pick, but in any other case, I see no value in tanking games. Somebody picking ahead of Milwaukee will wind up with a kid who flops...probably more than one somebody, and some player who is picked after round one will wind up in an All-Star game, probably more than one somebody. The team has a chance to draft a kid who walks into the system ranked as highly as number one among their prospects. That's both an opportunity, and a problem, I just hope they get it right in June.
  2. That's a shame, he certainly wasn't given the talent to show what he can do. I hope he gets another chance.
  3. I cannot, will not, won't ever root for my team to lose...not ever, not once. I'd worry about this if I was certain the first player picked will be the best player from this draft, the 15th player picked will be the 15th best big leaguer, etc, but that just doesn't happen. The key is to get it right in June, there's no way I believe there will only be 5-6 players worth having next year, nor will I believe the teams who pick before Milwaukee will all get it right in the first place. St Louis built winning teams for years, based around Albert Pujols, later Yadier Molina, and a bunch of guys who came from other organizations...now, they're doing it with a great farm system that has not had the benefit of top five picks along the way. You can have the, "I hope we lose to the Mets" strategy, I'll go with, "I hope we've done our homework", and I'll enjoy today's game.
  4. The Brewers could still wind up picking as high as third, or as low as thirteenth, but I don't see either happening. I think the White Sox will pick third, which at the moment would leave the Brewers, Cubs and Twins in a pile for the 4th pick. I'll say the Angels, Blue Jays and Rockies will win more games than the Brewers, which basically puts the Brewers somewhere between 4 and 10. I'll split the difference and say Milwaukee picks 7th. If that's true, the first two picks sure look they'll be the two pitchers, Carlos Rodon and Jeff Hoffman. I'll guess that Tyler Kolek and Alex Jackson definitely don't get to the Brewers. If this plays out, looking at Kiley McDaniel's current rankings, (which will no doubt change several times in the interim), the best players left in the Brewers' range would be a shortstop, a left fielder, a first baseman, a player who could either be a center fielder or a pitcher, and then two pitchers, followed by another shortstop. In other words, the Brewers could take almost anything...and that's exactly how they should play it.
  5. Colbyjack, you won't be ignored or disagreed with by me...if they take a pitcher, just because he's a pitcher, I'll be angry. The Brewers need to draft the best baseball player they can get, if he's a pitcher, that's fine, but if he's not, that's fine too.
  6. Tyler wound up throwing 40.1 innings this summer, he went 4-1, with a 3.12 ERA, he struck out 47 and walked 12.
  7. Gindl deserves to stay, but they would have had Aoki, Davis, Schafer and Gindl for two spots, they basically picked an outfielder, and sent him down. It's not about Yuni, who certainly deserves to go, it's about numbers. I would have done the same thing. Caleb will be back Sept. 1.
  8. I've had some contact with Devin, he seems to be a nice kid, who's got his feet on the ground. The work ethic, and the athletic ability both seem to be there, he just needs a lot of work, to develop command, etc.
  9. Leury Garcia has big speed, and plenty of D, he also has a career .657 OPS in the minor leagues, which is why Milwaukee didn't take Texas' offer for Greinke, which Garcia was in. Texas has traded a guy they won't miss, because they're stacked with middle infielders, and they've filled an obvious need...IF, the good version of Rios shows up in Arlington. Boston didn't give up anyone they'll miss to get Peavy, and now this, if you can afford to take on money in a deal, you get to keep your best prospects I guess.
  10. Lohse was claimed on waivers, and the Brewers pulled him back, saying there wasn't a match with the team that claimed him. It shouldn't surprise anyone that Lohse didn't make it through waivers...does anyone know which team claimed him?
  11. Stupid people using social media bug me. If you are of age, but your sibling is not, and the two of you are playing beer pong...perhaps you shouldn't share a photo?
  12. Right now, the Brewers would pick in the top five, if they go on an amazing hot streak, they'll pick in the top ten. This hasn't happened for a while, and with young talent being so important economically, the team can't afford to miss on this pick. I agree, a dominant college arm would be fantastic, but I'll be fine with a great young hitter too. The '05 draft produced J. Upton, A. Gordon, R. Zimmerman, R. Braun, T. Tulowitzki, A. McCutchen, and J. Bruce, among others...the third overall pick, was Jeff Clement. Brewers, just don't, "Clement" me, and I'm happy.
  13. Peter Gammons Tweeted about Rodon being Houston's choice right around the All-Star Break. I'm sure the Astros will take their time on this, and consider several players, but Rodon will be sold a bunch online. In the initial post in this thread, I mentioned Rodon, Gatewood and Jackson, but I didn't include Hoffman. My business partner went to ECU, if Hoffman winds up in Milwaukee, I'm sure I'll be asked for weekly updates as he climbs the ladder.
  14. I think the Sox were much more motivated to deal Peavy, because of his health history, if he gets hurt again...his value is gone. Boston made out like bandits in that trade, they didn't give up one guy they'll miss, and they added Peavy, but, by pulling Detroit in, at least the White Sox got one good prospect in the mix. Kyle Lohse is a good pitcher, and his contract is not a problem, the Brewers signing him has been an excellent move so far, nothing about having him here has hurt Milwaukee. This is a pretty easy one to see...Lohse could pitch well here for the duration of his contract, Lohse could be traded for some nice young talent, or Lohse could break down...two outta three ain't bad. My guess...Lohse will be traded this winter, for a better group of prospects than Chicago just got for Peavy.
  15. Yep, you're right, this is just Baltimore hedging their bet, the Rangers did the same thing in the Garza deal, and the Cubs wound up having to replace Rougned Odor with a lesser prospect because of it, even though Garza is doing just fine at the moment.
  16. Hoes is more glove than bat so far, he's a guy who can probably play all three outfield spots, and he "might" hit in the big leagues. He's, "nice", not exciting. I suppose it depends on whether or not either of the other prospects winds up helping Houston, but you're right, Delmonico is more highly regarded than Hoes.
  17. Houston gets minor leaguers LJ Hoes, and Josh Hader, plus Baltimore's Competitive Balance pick, which is the second pick following round one. Baltimore is reviewing some sort of issue on Norris' medicals, which could lead to a change in the second prospect they send to Houston.
  18. Arizona gets Joe Thatcher, a minor league reliever, and the Padres' Competitive Balance Lottery pick, which is the first one following round two.
  19. I've never gotten the sense that Milwaukee was actively trying to trade Lohse. Would they? Yes. Were they actually engaged in moving him? No, I haven't seen or heard anything that would indicate that. I really think they decided to keep him here through the season, barring someone really coming to get him. I do think the money he is owed is a factor, as it was in the Peavy deal, which should have netted Chicago a better package than it did, and that is precisely why I think they're waiting until the winter to pursue deals for Lohse. Lohse will actually be cheaper than the average bear in December, with a track record. Gallardo was young and cheap for his skills, so you heard a lot more about his availability, because it would have made great sense for teams to pay for him with prospects...but he flopped this season, so they have to wait on him too. On talent, and on current stats, there's just no reason not to come after Lohse, but if you can't get a really good young arm in the return...the Brewers are right to wait and try this in a few months, when all 29 teams will be open for business. Just look at the Peavy deal...Boston has four excellent young arms right now, they could afford to give one up, but somehow they got Peavy, giving up a shortstop they don't need, and three guys who won't be missed, but Boston took his entire contract. If the Brewers had done something like that with Lohse, I would not be happy.
  20. All of the details aren't in yet, but it sounds like the best player Boston gave up is Iglesias. If that's true, this is really a fantastic move by Boston, they get Peavy through next season, and they kept their best young players in the process. Coming into the season, Iglesias was ranked as the #9 prospect in Boston's system, behind Xander Bogaerts, a much better player who plays the same position, and also behind several pitchers...who are all apparently still with the Red Sox. Edit: Yep, Detroit filled their pending hole at SS, and the Red Sox got Peavy. The White Sox got Boston to assume 100% of Peavy's money, and they got Avisail Garcia, who is a good prospect, but I think Boston did fantastic. Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 36s The #WhiteSox get Avisail Garcia from #Tigers.and #Red Sox minor leaguers Cleulius Rondon, Francelis Montas and Jeffery Wendelken.
  21. Callaspo will play second for Oakland, the Angels receive second baseman Grant Green, a former first round pick, ranked by MLB.com as Oakland's #3 prospect.
  22. Gregmag, assuming Lohse is healthy at season's end, he may be quite appealing to GMs. He'll have 22 million left, over two years, which is cheaper than you could sign a comparable free agent, and the qualifying offer to keep a guy for one year is expected to exceed 14 million. With his track record, and his contract, he may be a plus option for teams over free agents. The same is true for Gallardo, but given the season he's having, I can't see teams offering a whole lot, so I'd expect to see him back here to start the season, barring a strong finish this season.
  23. Gordon Edes ‏@GordonEdes 10m Iglesias to Tigers, 2 or 3 lesser prospects to White Sox, Det OF Avisal Garcia to White Sox, pitcher from Det also coming to Boston Retweeted by Buster Olney
  24. Detroit receives Jose Iglesias, as insurance in case of Jhonny Peralta suspension.
  25. 3 teams, details coming.
