  1. LaRussa has a reliever who was lucky to get through the 7th bat leadoff in the 8th with a 3-1 lead and then pulls him after he puts the 1st guy on. That might be the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
  2. Here's the rule: 7.08 Any runner is out when -- (j) failing to return at once to first base after overrunning or oversliding that base. If attempting to run to second the runner is out when tagged. If, after overrunning or oversliding first base the runner starts toward the dugout, or toward a position, and fails to return to first base at once, that runner is out, on appeal, when said runner or the base is tagged. 1. The rule doesn't say it's whether he had the slightest thought about going to second base or took a half step left instead of right. The rule is whether he attempted to go to second base. He didn't. 2. As to returning at once to first, look at the examples. He didn't start toward the dugout or go to his position. He clearly intended to stay on first base. So that doesn't apply either and calling him out for that would be not just a BS application of a technicality but wrong. Bad call. At best you can say that it's arguably correct (even though completely unnecessary since nobody was somehow fooled into thinking he was going to second so why exercise your judgment to make the call that way). But even that is a losing argument Yelich was justifiably upset. So was Uecker and I've been listening to him for 50+ years and he is not a homer on this kind of stuff.

  4. You're right, from 1903-2020 there were 119 games where it was 7-0 into the bottom of the first and visiting team won 116, or 97.5%, which is 39 out of 40. https://gregstoll.com/~gregstoll/baseball/stats.html#H.-7.1.0.1.0.0
  5. Someone asked my nephew in the 1st what position player would pitch today. His response: "Eric Sogard again after we score these 15 unanswered runs obviously."
  6. I remember that one too, except I was 33 and listening the Angels broadcast. I'm kinda worried being 7 up in this one.
  7. That's a big win for the Pads; they'd lost 13 of 17 and just got swept by the Rox.
  8. Anderson v the Dbacks in 2017 and v the Cubs in 2016 went 7.0 no-hit before giving up a hit to lead off the 8th. Gallardo's was also broken up with none out in the 8th v St. Louis in 2011. The last ones I can find that were 7.1 or longer are Odell Jones 8.1 in 1988 and Teddy Higuera 7.2 in 1987. So is this is closest in 30+ years?
  9. I know we should be all positive after a sweep but geez Sam Holbrook behind the plate. You could lip read the Nats guy saying "you f'g suck, you're f-g terrible" before he got tossed and he wasn't wrong. Turner should have been in an 0-2 hole in the 9th never seen one that bad.
  10. Defector has a story today on the Brewers' AAA affiliate in 1974, which played in a park with a 230' fence in left and the wind blowing out a lot. It's paywalled but here's the link: https://defector.com/every-game-was-a-home-run-derby-for-the-1974-sacramento-solons/ Here's a direct link to the embedded You Tube video of a Heywood Hale Broun piece on the team: He has an interview with Tom Hausman, who was with the Brewers the next year and once left in the 9th with a 6-0 lead in a game the Brewers ended up losing 11-6 in 10, completing a DH sweep. My brother and I drove from Madison for both games - fun day!
  11. If you want to justify your existence, call the runner out for running out of the lane and send the guy back to 3d.
  12. Sorry just seeing this now. I wouldn't do it and that's generally what I hear. I think you'd be better off in a sports bar. It looked like the prices went down a lot by game day -- good seats at 80-100 and up top under 60. It has been a lot harder for visiting fans - I saw maybe 5 Brewer fans all day and there had been more and more before. Check out if there are residence requirements - at one point I thought I saw it was California residents only. A good idea for Brewer/Cub series.
  13. A good article on Burnes in Defector today (paywalled): https://defector.com/its-all-happening-for-corbin-burnes/ "Anyway: Corbin Burnes, who is currently the best pitcher in the universe, spent much of his 2019 season backing up third base while on his own journey through all that."
  14. I'm headed to Petco for my first time inside a ballpark since the Brewers got swept here 2 years ago. All vaxxed and we'll be distanced (although not in one of the vax only sections). On the 3d base side and my Pad fan friend says there'll be Brewer fans around. Really nice of him, so I'll leave the broom at home. Nice low stress game; if they lose I'll still be happy for him and my son (who still hasn't thanked me after he played McKinney in Draft Kings the last 2 nights on my advice but whatever).
  15. Yadi at it again, starts a skirmish as he bumps an ump rushing after Castellanos who's walking back to the dugout after getting hit and then scoring on a passed ball (good job Yadi) and saying something to the P and Castellanos is the one who gets tossed.
  16. I do miss not hearing him on the radio down here. I can get it on Sirius in my car but how do you get it on your phone? Publix? Where do you live? Download the mlb app and you can stream all the games for $20/year. The Publix was near GT in Atlanta when our daughter was there. We're in Tybee part of the year (including now) and San Diego mostly. Are you in the south?
  17. I do miss not hearing him on the radio down here. You can get him on your phone, laptop, Sirius, etc. pretty much anywhere. I walked into a Publix once with my phone in my shirt pocket and no earphones and the cashier said "it that the ballgame, wow, it's just like my grandpa!"
  18. https://www.change.org/p/big-ten-remove-bo-boroski-from-his-position-as-a-big-ten-official Bo Boroski Makes Calls @BoBoroski I make the calls no one else can see.
  19. Some states use a "past successes" formula where they can bump a team up a division. In the past the WIAA has discussed this option, but tabled it. This might be a fine idea. The other idea might be a tournament of champions. Like in basketball, why not put the top 5 divisions in a mini tournament? What's the harm? Hockey could have d1 and d2 play against each other too. Out in California they have an open division on top for the best teams regardless of enrollment. They use the past success formula too for the tourneys. Our daughter's basketball team was Div. IV but Div III at tourney time (and in a league with Open teams which worked out as you'd expect).
  20. We are! Seeing that big run score bc Yadi didn't know it was a force was the best. The right way! It's even better for my son since it's his team. They're probably still celebrating downtown.
