  1. Just a pot stirring writer trying to make something out of nothing. Following his logic, the Red Sox players should be out there striking with the workers. But they are not. And no one cares. Crossing a picket line isn't the same as not joining one.
  2. There's this too, which I saw from a friend out East; it's gotten zero attention out here: https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2018/10/23/los-angeles-dodgers-cross-picket-line-betray-proud-heritage/F2qK5GhlqSSzTAWDEfT9dK/story.html
  3. My wife just said "look there's Backstop Barbie or whatever her name is." I like that name !! Much more correct . She's always been the Queen of the Nickname.
  4. We're in Dodger territory now, in La Quinta for the weekend. I'm thinking Dodgers get to Hader, Brewers get to Jansen.
  5. OK, anyone who thinks clutch doesn't exist must have never interacted with another human being before. Do you know people who can talk to you just fine but then completely tense up giving a large presentation? Do you know people who can talk to their sister no problem but completely tense up talking to a random woman at a bar? Do you know someone who is really smart but "can't take tests"? Did you know someone in little league who was praying that ball wasn't hit to them with the bases loaded, but love taking grounders in practice? The people who do not fall into these categories are "clutch" The problem is that most people think clutch is a magical thing that makes you better, but rather clutch is really the ability to not choke. That is why there is no "evidence" for it, because people are looking for someone to consistently hit 50 points higher with RISP than without over their entire career or something. There is plenty of evidence for clutch because people don't hit 50 points lower consistently over their entire career in ties games etc. I think a minimum requirement for being a professional athlete is that you have to be clutch. If not you will get weeded out before the professional level. So relative clutch-ness is not very different across the league. We agree on that one !! Pretty much what I've said on the topic. It's more that choking is a thing, not that people get magically better in clutch Haha exactly! How can someone so wrong on the infield fly rule be so right on this one?!
  6. OK I'm going to weigh in on clutchness and RBIs too. Are the people who think RBI are meaningless and there's no such thing as clutch OK when you can't get a big run in from 3d with less than 2 outs?
  7. You're allowed to do it on a ground ball because the fielders have to make a play when both the runner and the hitter are running a hard as they can to avoid it. On an infield fly the fielders don't have to do anything except realize that whatever the runners do they're screwed; they'll either get doubled off or forced out. On a line drive the runner or runners can stay close enough to get back and make the next base if it goes through. I guess what's arbitrary and dumb is ultimately a matter of opinion. In my view it is fortunate that the people who wrote the rule and most (at the least) baseball fans don't think it's arbitrary and dumb, and that you don't need unanimity to enact a rule. 8. Right because there won't be a save chance for him now. You always use your closer at home in a tie game. No point holding him for the 10th or later.
  9. Was the crowd loud enough for Hernandez as he looked at that third strike?
  10. As far as I'm concerned, his slam off Bumgarner to give the Brewers that win against the Giants made the trade worthwhile, seeming that one game would have put us in the Wild Card round. Ortiz could develop into something, but I wouldn't say the chances are super high. Carmona is basically a shot in the dark, and Villar was a throw-in. Anything he does now is justification for bringing him back next year. He's got an All Star past and has shown the offensive ability to carry a team on his back. It's time to see it. Come on...you have to know it is silly to use one positive play to draw a conclusion, and ignore all other outcomes. That was +1 one game and minus 10 in the other. Yes I am exaggerating, but you get the point. That is just completely wrong justification. Now pointing to his past...knock yourself out. He essentially won the last game against the Padres too until Knebel melted down.
  11. Thomas to Braun: Did you guys take this game as a must win and now you feel like you're playing with house money after this win tonight? Braun: We take every game as a must win, that's why we've been so successful over the last 3 weeks . . .
  12. I really don't question the decision but it did feel like bad mojo, Miley was lights out and just had a hit and scored, everything was going so right. I knew he would be pulled soon though, can't argue sticking with what got you here. I agree but I'm thinking of the line "the fox knows many things the hedgehog only one but it's a big one." I'm usually w the foxes; sometimes you need to go w what's happening instead of your one thing.
  13. I guess the idea was the first guy he saw 3x got a hit. But yeah. If it were the 1st game maybe.
  14. One of their writers described Deadspin's demographic as "irritable dads with a law degree."
  15. This is exact;y what I was thinking while watching them during the Dodger series. How can people do that continuously? It's actually sickening. The 2 times I enjoyed it: at the 92 All-Star game after Glavine gave up 7 hits in a row our whole section chanted it for him. And after Oregon crushed Florida State in the playoff a couple of their guys at midfield chanted "No means noo-o-o. No means noo-o-o."
  16. The weeknight games are tough for coming up from San Diego. Maybe Monday. 538 has the odds at 60/40 Dodgers. They are the toughest draw but I'm glad they're in. I think Kershaw is only .500 or so against the Brewers in his career. Braun and Yelich have both hit him well.
  17. To me the biggest moment of the season although not the most dramatic was Hader saving a 2-1 win against the Cards in mid-August. The Brewers had dropped 8 of 11 including the terrible series to the Padres and had lost the 1st 2 of the series to the Cards to drop to 3d place 11 over .500. That game started the 28-10 run that ended the season. The 3 run 15th was a few games later and helped a lot too.
  18. Ueck wasn't on the call for the walk off Nor yelich's homer I believe. Right, Ueck calls 1-2, 5-6 and 8-9 and in extras he's usually gone until the 12th. Yelich's HR was in the 3d and the walkoff was in 10 so he didn't call either. He called the top of the 9th though!
