  1. Tell me about it. My son's game got called in the bottom of the 2nd last night. They also had a game canceled on Tuesday because of poor field conditions. It's getting more and more difficult to make the games up at this time of the season. My son was pitching and threw a little fit when the game was called. Tossed his hat, threw his glove against the fence. Can't say I was very proud of his behavior (and I sat him down and told him so)...but there was a small part of me to see that he love's playing the game so much.
  2. I'm not saying he need to pitch 120-130 pitches a game every time out like Baker did with those guys back in 04(? - or was it 03?). I'm just not getting the whole 170 innings carved in stone thing. Can't they monitor him every other week and see how he feels? Give him a check up? Maybe take an occasional precautionary MRI or something? Rather than set this arbitrary inning limit number. I think all pitchers are different. I'm sure some players rebound from injuries at different rates than other. Do we need to take a worse case approach with Parra? I could understand if we were 12 games back and on pace to lose 90 to 100 games, but I think they need to push the envelope a little bit this year with this situation.
  3. Yeah, my dad has never been a very big golfer and goes with my and my son maybe once or twice a year (He's in his upper 70's now). Every time we go, I get into a discussion with him about waking in another persons line. His argument is that people have been stepping on that line all day, so what does it matter if I do it? I try to explain that A. It's a bit of a distraction and B. It's a freshly "depressed" foot print (He does not wear golf shoes). He just laughs at the thought that some one stepping in your line could be distracting or that a slight foot print depression could make that much of a difference. He's probably right (especially if you are not wearing golf shoes), but it's still something that's just not done. Not sure how to explain that to him.
  4. I know I've sounded off about this before, but the whole Parra resting thing just sickens me. Geez, I wish I could have used that out of College...."You know, I'm not use to working full time. I'm use to having a lot of free time in the summer and I usually didn't have classes on Friday's so I slept in. So, do you mind if I ease into this full time work schedule thing?" I do realize he's had a past history of injuries, but so has Sheets. Should we rest Sheets as well? When was Parra last injured? Isn't he recovered by now? If not, should he be pitching at all. Either your ready and able to pitch or your not. He is a professional..right? He does do proper conditioning and stretching between starts..correct? Ok, everyone, let's hear it. Let's hear about how if we pitch him too much this year, it will ruin his career. Suppan should go to the bullpen based on his performance (ignore contracts at this point). Everyone else should take there normal spot in the rotation without any "skipping". Like someone else said..I thought we were "going for it" this year.
  5. I'm not completely familiar with the whole draft pick compensation thing. How would it work if the Yankees got bot Sabathia and Sheets? (I know that's a lot of money to spend...but it is the Yankees).
  6. My weekends are generally pretty full (Sundays are better), but if it falls on a weekend that I'm not as busy, I could be pursuaded to play.
  7. To me it's not so much the teaching thing as much as the golf ettiquette, fast play. To me, even if you are a below average or "bad" golfer, you should still be able to keep pace. I'm kind of a stickler for that and nothing drives me more nuts than when my foursome starts falling off pace with the group in front of us and we have a group right on our heels. Like I said, my 10 year old has been learning to golf "bigger" courses this year (i.e Greenfield Park as opposed to Hanson). My biggest frustration with him is trying to get him to keep pace and be ready to hit when it's his turn. It's frustrating because I want him to take his time and focus on hitting a good shot, but then I want him to get to his next shot quickly and be ready. I know my kid gets a little ornery when I am pushing him to pick up the pace, I can only imagine how that goes with a husband and wife. About 10 years ago or so when "Tiger Mania" was in full force the courses were littered with people who had just decided to take up golf on a whim. It seemed that without any practice or thought to it, people went out, purchased top of the line clubs and headed straight for courses that were way above their playing level. Couple that with the complete lack of any type of golf ettiquette or fast play protocol and it was completely maddening. Just have some sense of awareness of your position on the course, where the group in front of you is and where the group behind you is. If you are continuously have trouble keeping pace, then maybe you need to think about moving down a notch or two regarding where you choose to play golf. Maybe I should have posted this in the "What's bugging you" thread.
  8. Again, thanks for all the suggestions. I guess it really sounds like I'm going to have to rent The Princess Bride, regardless of the title. We have watched many of the sugestions already (just forgot to list them). I can't believe no one mentioned Back to the Future (or maybe they did and I just missed it). "Joe vs. the Volcano"...Yes, love that one, we did watch that one..and exactly the rare, off beat, quirky type of movie I enjoy watching with my son. Some one mentioned Tommy Boy and Waynes World. I love those movies..but hmmmm...not sure. The hole hotel "New York Yankees" ..although I know when that scene comes and could be prepared...and Wayne's World? "Schwing!" I don't know.
  9. Pulp Fiction...oh yeah....that's my son's favorite.
  10. The Burbs isn't any scarier than Ghostbusters or even Harry Potter. My son has a pretty mature sense of humor for his age.
  11. We always take one night to venture down there and eat. Just be careful of all the birds (you might want to take an umbrella!!).
  12. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I tried renting "The Burbs" at Blockbuster last weekend, but they don't carry it. I'm not a big Hockey fan, but "Miracle" does sound like a great suggestion. I'm definitly going to look into that one. Someone else mentioned "The Princess Bride" to me, but I can just see the look on my son's face when I mention the title. It really sounds like a girls film..is it? We took him to see Enchanted at the theaters..he hated it. UHF crossed my mind a couple of months ago and I forgot about it. I'm not much of a SciFi/Fantasy fan. My son has been reading the Harry Potter books over the past 6 or 7 months. I like to see him reading as much as he does with those books, but then, of course, we have to rent and see the film. I just can't get into those movies.
  13. I'm not sure why people tend to give a 9 hole score. I prefer to golf 18 myself. I have not golfed nearly as much in the last 2 or 3 years as I have in the past. My son's involvement in sports and my coaching of his baseball team has taken up alot of my "free time". However, now he is getting more into golf, so we tend to go 9 holes on a late Sunday afternoon. I would also make that suggestion if you are going with your wife who is just taking up the game. The courses tend to be much less crowded on Sunday afternoons after 3:30 or so(assuming that you can not go on a weekday), especially during the football season. Good beginner courses are Grant, Hanson, Brookfield Hills, Moor Downs (Waukesha). As far as courses you would enjoy as an experienced golfer, I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. If you live in Milwaukee County you can get a county golf card (even if you don't live in the county you can get a card, but it cost more). I forget the cost of the card ($15 a year?). If you use it more than twice it will pay for itself. Many of the County courses are not kept in the greatest of shape because of budget cuts, but some of them (Dretzka, Oakwood) are moderatly challenging. Greenfield, Whitnall, and Currie are enjoyable too, but not anything special and can really get backed up at times during the weekend (mostly by golfers who have no idea of proper golf ettiquette or fast play protocol). I would suggest golfing early (8am or earlier) if golfing a county course during the weekend. The biggest benefit of owning a County Card is the ability to golf Brown Deer for fairly cheap (I think it's about $40 now on weekends). $40 is a very good value for Brown Deer, but I would not suggest paying the non-resident fee ($80+?). You're better off using your money towards other area courses. Outside of Milwaukee County, Broadview in North Prarie is a very nice course at a very reasonable price. It's not overly challanging, but it's always in good shape (bent grass fairways and greens). Washington County golf course north of Holy Hill is also nice. I have not golfed there in a while, so I'm not sure what they are charging now ($50 maybe?). Naga Waukee in Waukesha is also a nice course for the money. I think they charge about $35 for a non-resident. Kettle Hills and Edgewood are other options for cheaper accessable courses in the area. Other nice courses in the area are Fire Ridge, Morning Star, and Bristle Cone Pines. However, you are going to start getting up to the $100 range with some of those. The elite courses in SE WI are obviously the Kohler Courses (Black Wolf Run, Meadows, Irish, and Whistling Straits). I have been fortunate to be able to golf these courses through work connections and have not had to pay. From what I understand, Whistling Straits has started to make getting a room at their resort a prerequisite to getting a tee time. Whistling Straits also requires a caddy that will cost you an extra $40 or so in tips. Erin Hills near Hartford is the newest Elite course in SE WI. The course was built almost entirely using the natural landscape of the area (earth was moved on only 4 holes to build it and if you get a chance to play it, you will not believe it). It has already hosted the Women's public links championships and it has been discussed as a possible future US Open site. Other courses around SE WI that are a small notch below the Kohler and Erin Hills courses are Geneva National, Grand Geneva, The Bog, and The Bull. Not sure what courses you are driving by where you are seeing a lot of waking. Most of the county courses are very walkable. Also, be aware that Wisconsinites tend to be very "frugal" with there spending. I don't get a ton of exercise otherwise and so I like to walk and carry my bag when I golf. Some of the "upper end" courses require a cart. I believe all the greens in Wisconsin are bent grass. I'm not sure, but I believe they tend to play faster than Bermuda grass. Hope some of this helps.
  14. I have a 10 year old son. Maybe some of you have the same issue, but it's hard to come up with appropriate non-animated movies that both he and my wife and I will enjoy. I don't mind a little swearing or a small amount of violence, but I tend to try stay away from films with overly sexual references or nudity. Comedies are always good or maybe a movie that might be inspirational or have some sort of "life lesson" involved in it. These are few of the films we have watched over the years as he has grown up (in random order)..any other suggestions would be nice. Rudy Rocky Kicking and Screaming Star Wars (all of them) Blues Brothers (mostly the TV censored version - but he's getting old enough where the original version is ok, a few swears) Indiana Jones Ghost Busters Big Pursuit of Happyness What about Bob Field of Dreams Sandlot The Rookie Rookie of the Year Groundhog Day Martian Child (I really liked this movie) Dreamer Cheaper by the Dozen Men In Black There are others that I'm forgetting, but you get the general idea of the types of movies I'm looking for. It gets harder and harder when I go into the video store to find a good family movie that's not too sappy or childish. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  15. My wife, my son, and I have gone down to Spring Training for the last 6 years and yes, if you can book earlier you can save some money (especially if you book a hotel/flight package on expedia, orbits, travelocity..etc). We usually stay at a resort near the south mountain range. Not nearly as nice as Scottsdale, but we like what we get for the price we pay. We also usually go either the 1st or 2nd week of March for a couple of reasons. A. I'm not a big fan of crowds and it's usually less crowded at that time and B. We are usually so sick of winter by the first week in January, there is no way we can wait until the end of March to get away. Also, the players seem more accesible during the first few weeks because of the smaller crowds.
  16. distant cousin of Wayne Gretzky? edit: Sorry Brian..missed your comment about not being a relative....that was not really a serious guess anyways
  17. My son really likes that song by Pan Am that is played before each game. Does anyone know a site that I could download it from? I have searched the internet to no avail.
  18. I have hesitated posting my confession because it's subject to getting me banned from brewerfan.net. However, I have made reference to this before. I'm not nearly the Cub hater that everyone else is. In fact I have rooted for them in the playoffs (**Gasp!**). I probably dislike the Twins (mostly because I hate the dome - so maybe that will change with the new stadium) and the White Sox more than the Cubs. Don't get me wrong, if they are in a pennant race with the Brewers, I am constantly checking the out of town score board and rooting for them to lose. But if they are in the playoffs and the Brewers are not, I root for them. My dad is a life long Cubs fan (I mean from the 30's) and I would like to see them win one again before he dies. Also, not to change the subject, but regarding Ewizabeth and men beating down her door because of her love of baseball.... I was at the game the other night sitting next to 3 attractive girls that appeared to be about 20 or 21. They talked about baseball throughout the whole game with each other. Not.."Oh look at JJ, isn't he so cute" type talk. Yes, there was a little of that, but most of it was very intelligent and thoughtful discussion regarding topics such as small ball and the depth of the pitching staff. Don't want to sound sexist by being surprised by this, but when I was that age there were absolutely no girls that I was aware of that knew the first thing about baseball (maybe about getting to first base....but I digress). I have noticed a lot more female fans of baseball in Milwaukee than in the past. My 25 year old niece is also very much into baseball and has a pretty good knowledge of it.
  19. Wow, now I need to find some video some place, because yes he does it all the time..and like I said same with Sheets (watch him tonight). Both of them do the same thing. It's not a continuous cough. It's one big throat clearing cough. Also, not to change the subject, but why do I always have a problem finding game higlights on Brewers.com. Are they charging for that now?
  20. There was an article about this in the Encore section of the print version of the JS this morning. I could not find it in JS Online, but I found this: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:3jfexz9jld0e Has anyone heard of this or any of the songs. Are they any good. Sounds interesting. Also, does anyone know the name of the song they have been playing before games lately along with footage of the Brewers? I believe it's by a group named "Pan Am" and it looks like they have footage of the group at Summer Fest.
  21. There is a guy I golf with that has always putted while looking at the hole. He's a very good golfer, about a 4 or 5 handicap.
  22. I was thinking of this exact same thing the other night when I was watching the game. Same thing for Sheets, he's always coughing.
  23. Make's my arm hurt just watching that.
  24. Brett's retirement..yeah right. I suppose you're going to tell me that Elvis is dead too..right?
