  1. Maybe I'm just imagining it, but Braun seems to have popped out a lot this year so far.
  2. Why didn't I see this thread when it originally came out? My incomplete list (in no particular oder): Sleep Mt. Dew Girl Scout cookies Memories of my childhood Defense in baseball Teachers, Police, Firemen and women, Armed Forces personnel, and anyone who does jobs for little or no money that no one else will do. Northern Exposure - the TV show (where are the reruns!) Also, someone mentioned the creditreport.com commercials. My 10 year old son spent hours the other night memorizing the lyrics to those things. Apparently he and his friends at school spend their socializing time showing off to each other how well they know those ads. I'm so proud.
  3. Had to chime in. Listening to the game and about 5 minutes ago, Ueck stated that Harang wasn't a big strikeout guy?? Didn't he lead the league last year?
  4. Really? Where? Special promotions or where they just arbitrarily handing them out or what? I cringe when I here that, because how is that fair to the people who actually paid to get in? It's not like they are struggling to draw fans.
  5. I heard Selig get asked about this around a year ago on some interview on XM. As much as I like Bud, his non-comittle answers are anoying at times. He gave the standard "We are certainly aware of the situtation and it's something we have been looking into on an ongoing basis." Basically, don't hold your breath hoping for something to change any time soon.
  6. Thanks, I knew there was a rule regarding players having to be in fair territory. The reason this question came up is because I coach a youth baseball team and the other coaches and I were discussing the positioning of the 1st baseman with covering first. I was teaching the right foot against the bag, similar to what most major leaguers do. However, I also no that at youth levels it's common to teach a straddling of the bag. My concern was that the first baseman could not position himself in foul territory. But what constitutes foul territory? What if his heals are on the line, or if one foot is in foul and the other is in fair territory?
  7. Can anybody help with this. Can any fielder, other than the catcher, position them selves in foul territory before the pitch is thrown? If not, can any part of them be in foul territory? Can they straddle the foul line? Can they be stepping on the foul line? Thanks for your help. I would look it up in the rules, but I'm sure someone here knows the answer and can answer much faster than it would take me to delve through all the rules to find the part that mentions this.
  8. George: "I just don't like the idea that any time there's a dinner invitation, there's this annoying little chore that goes along with it." Jerry: "You know, you're getting to be an annoying little chore yourself."
  9. Wow, that was a pretty cool idea. Did you ever get any responses and if so, do you still have any of them?
  10. For some reason on my way to work this morning I was thinking about baseball publications I use buy every year. I'm wondering if anyone else is old enough to remember any of these. One of my favorites was one that I can't remember the name of now (I may have an old copy in my basement somewhere). It was a thick paperback type book that previewed all the teams and players on each team. Towards the front of the book they would predict the AL and NL races and they would do it in horse racing style. For example on the bottom of the AL East predictions they might say something like 'Boston comes out of the gate fast and sets the pace with Milwaukee and Baltimore on it's heels. New York and Detroit loom in the middle of the pack. Cleveland and Toronto stumble coming out of the gate and never are a factor. Milwaukee shows some late speed down the stretch and noses out Boston at the finish line.' I'm not sure when they stopped printing this book. I think the last time I purchased it was around 84 or 85. Anyone remember that one? I also use to purchase the annual AL Red Book (the NL had a Green Book, didn't purchase it because the Brewers were in the AL). It had all the stats from the previous year. Information on each stadium. 40 man rosters. Historic and year by year records for each team and some other statistical information. It was always printed in landscape form. I'm pretty sure they do not print this any more. The last one I remember always getting was the Street and Smith annual publication. I have not seen this over the last several years, but I think they were still printing it in the late 90's/ early 00's . It was a publication that my dad always purchased for me when I was a kid because it was something he always purchased when he was a kid. It was your basic predictions and team by team preview magazine. I also remember that they would always have a couple pages on upcoming milestones for active players. Not sure what the point of this thread is, other than me being a very nostalgic person. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else remembers any of these publications (especially the first one) or if there are any baseball publications that you remember buying as a kid that are no longer being published. edit: Doing further research, it appears that Street and Smith have recently combined with The Sporting News and from what I can tell the AL Red Book was last published in the mid 90's sometime. Here is a picture of the 1978 book: http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/dd2150967df9911c4b91b992f343c413bf8e516.pjpg
  11. From what I understand is that you can hook up an antena to your TV and get those HD channels. Like I mentioned in my original post, that is what my neighbor does (he has Dish and does not get the local HD chanels either - but can with an antena).
  12. You get excited about your approaching 1000th post.....
  13. I think InsomInkRoss made it clear that he would only throw such items out the window on a "non-populated" stretch into "grassy areas". Although it's most likely unlawful, I see nothing wrong with it at all. It's biodegradable! 3 to 4 weeks in some vacant area that no human will probably step foot on. Who cares? It's not like there's going to be piles of banana peels and apple cores on the side of the road. What about apples that drop from trees in late summer, early fall? Is that unacceptable? Throwing non-decomposing trash out the window or throwing anything out the window in a residential or heavily inhabited area is just wrong. You should see all the trash in my car....I really need to clean it out this weekend.
  14. Golf. If I do bad, I have no one else to blame but myself. If I do well, no one else can take credit. That's the way I'm wired and probably why my favorite game to play that involves a basketball is horse.
  15. I'm embarrassed to mention some of the movies that I can not follow. One would be the Matrix. I tried watching it on cable once and turned it off after about 40 minutes, completely lost. Then there are movies that I understand the plot and the overall story, but certain parts I can't follow...for example, some of the fast talking tough cop scenes in The Departed. Nobody talks like that in real life. I love the Godfather, but I'll never understand the families and the relationships of the various families...whether it's the Godfather, Sopranos, or any mob film.
  16. He should get together with 2Hoophead's aquantance....Joe Cool
  17. Ha, that's been in the phone book forever (or at least since I was in highschool - 20+ years), and it still is. If you have a copy of the Greater Milwaukee AT&T White pages and you look in the business section (the red lined pages), there is a listing under Otto Partz (not Otto Pahts) and Auto Parts. Its a business on 1829 W North Ave - same address and phone # for both listings. Don't know the story behind it, but it has been a long running listing. I knew a girl in our old neighborhood that was a few years older than me. Her name was Patti Fatigatti (spl of last name? - pronounced "fatty gatty". Gay Bars? C'mon! Seriously?!
  18. Does anyone else have issues with HD on CBS? I purchased an HD TV a little over a month ago. Since I got it I noticed that the HD on CBS is not nearly as nice as other chanels. I have Time Warner Cable. I asked a neighbor of mine about it (He has dish and uses an attena to get the local HD chanels), and he agreed that CBS is possibly one of the worse HD channels in regards to picture quality. Anyone else notice this? It's been really bad and really annoying at times during the NCAA tourney.
  19. As some one mentioned before, this topic comes up every year the first time there is a 60 degree day and the sun is out. I'm suprised at the viewpoints of most people this year. Didn't really do an actual count, but it seems like most people this year are posting that they appreciate the roof and the Brewer's decision to usually error on the cautious side. It seems like most other years when this topic came up, I was in the definite minority as to my preferance to have the roof closed on a 60 degree day. I'm all about comfort. As mentioned many times in this thread. The temperature difference in the sun vs the shade can be absolutely dramatic.
  20. Had time to think about it a little more. I'd like to see a salary cap, but I know the players union would balk at that. This is what I would propose. A total league (MLB) cap based on a formula that takes into account total MLB revenue from the previous year. This cap would then be divided equally among all MLB teams, to determine each teams salary cap (i.e. if the formula calculates a total league cap of $2.7 billion, then each teams cap would be $90mil - 2.7 bil divided by 30). If the total actual payroll of MLB players ends up being less than the caculated MLB total cap then each team (regardless of whether or not they used their full cap) would have to make up the difference by contibuting to a "payroll shortage" fund based on their percentage of the total MLB revenue. This "payroll shortage" pool would then be redistributed to the players on a weighted basis (based on their salary). Probably didn't describe that very well and I'm not sure if anyone can follow it. Probably not a realistic idea. However, since the unions big objective to a cap is that it would slow pay growth for players, the objective of this plan would be to guarantee the players an agreed upon percentage of total revenues each year while curbing the large discrepancies between the large and small market teams. Also, I would get rid of the rule in the playoffs that states that you can't play a team from your own division in the division series. Best record goes against worst record..period.
  21. Well, I'm not sure what I would do as a commissioner, but I would like to see teams give equal time to defense and offensive practice during the season. Not really part of the commissioner's job though. As for your list. 1) I agree - hate the DH 2) The commissioner would really have very little power over this. and even if an edict like that was handed down, I'm not sure how many new ballparks would be constructed, given the extra cost of adding a retractable roof. Would you expect current stadiums to retrofit a roof on their current place? Not really realistic. 3&4) Wow, I completely disagree. The different dimensions of the game is one of the things that adds character, tradition, and separates it from other sports. The Green Monster in Boston, the spaciousness of the old Polo Grounds. I would never want to go back the cookie cutter stadiums of the 70's.
  22. I would think it would make sense to start with the division schedule of each team and look at how it was set up the previous year. If the Brewers played 3 home series against Houston and 2 away the previous year, then this year set it up so there is 2 home series and 3 away. Then do that with all the other teams in the division. THEN, fill out the rest of the schedule. That way there would be no need to "take away" a home series or set off some sort of "chain reaction" Yes, maybe things even out over the course of 10 years, but that seems like a long time to "even things out". At this period in time the Cubs and Brewers are arguably the two best teams in the Central and I think it's important that the home/away schedule not be so lopsided in a stretch of 2 or 3 years. By the time it get's "evened out", the two teams might be miles apart as far as talent goes and the home/away schedule will have less significance.
