  1. I doubt this means anything for Herrera, although it could/probably should. I can recall a few times Counsell specifically mentioning Herrera as a guy he liked. Peterson should probably be dumped first anyway.
  2. Yes - and see the initial post, the 40-man is now at 35.
  3. I would argue irrationally early to make any concrete judgments involving performance. I mean, he got rid of Reid Nichols... that alone might make a successful offseason.
  4. Villar was optioned in 2013, 2014, and 2015 so he's out of options.
  5. I don't know that this has anything to do with Segura. We have a hole at third.
  6. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/brewers-acquire-jonathan-villar-astros.html Villar was blocked by Correa and Altuve up the middle at the big league level, though he was not able to unseat Luis Valbuena and/or Marwin Gonzalez and/or Jed Lowrie at the hot corner. He is a 40-man addition, which bumps the 40-man roster back up to 35. Sneed was a 3rd round pick back in 2014 and had progressed to advanced-A Brevard County. He was ranked #24 on the end of season Brewerfan top 25 prospect list. Villar has no options remaining.
  7. Agreed, I'd love to pick up a David Hernandez or Jason Motte if they'd come on a 1-year, reasonable deal. If Smith/Jeffress (if either or both are still here come opening day) outperform the free agent signing, so be it, but I think there's a no-risk value in adding to the end of the bullpen. Crappy teams with good bullpens can benefit greatly around the trading deadline.
  8. The Cubs have 10 open spots on the 40-man roster. They should be able to protect everyone they need to.
  9. Yep. I'm guessing we'll know the PTBNL in the next few weeks at the latest.
  10. Betancourt held his own as a 20-year old in advanced A-ball. Might be Biloxi's 2B next year, though it'll be interesting to see if/how they deal with him and McFarland on the same team.
  11. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/tigers-to-acquire-francisco-rodriguez.html
  12. I'd be surprised if Wang is protected, though not shocked I guess. What team would want to have him waste another year of development in the big leagues? I can't remember anyone spending significant roster time as a Rule 5 pick in two different seasons with two different teams, although it's obviously not outside the realm of possibility. And then who do you not protect in order to protect Wang? Roache is the only one of those five I can see an argument for.
  13. Just to bump this before the additions are announced, I'm guessing they add Arcia, Magnifico, Barnes, Roache, and Ortega in order of certainty. I'm almost positive on the first three - I think they removed Hernan Perez from the roster due to Barnes' showing in the AFL. They might opt for Ortega over Roache if they only add four. I had Nick Ramirez as a maybe back in July, but he fell on his face in the second half, as did Austin Ross. I still think Angel Ventura and Dustin Houle are possibilities, and I guess you never know with Suter.
  14. Coulter probably should have been moved from behind the plate and immediately, but he's athletic enough that corner outfield should be an option. It doesn't appear to me, nor have I seen anyone say, that he's grown to big to play RF. He may never be great at it, but there's a lot more value to be had there than at 1B. And the Brewers need to get out of the habit of jerking guys around from position to position. Give him a few years.
  15. Agreed that Hader should be above Medeiros, but I don't think Hader being #11 vs. being #8 or #7 or whatever discredits the list. Last I knew, BA basically has the final say, so this was vetted by some knowledgable people. Might have been one or two guys really loved Medeiros and/or Coulter, and that was enough to push them past Hader. Kind of like how Brent Suter got one completely ridiculous vote in the poll that was just put together here, and that alone almost got him into the top 25.
  16. He's a really nice guy and well regarded around baseball. That doesn't mean he'll automatically be good at this, but it's a good start.
  17. Well, the Braves are looking for a long term solution at catcher... just sayin'.
  18. Yah, all four of the pitchers have had their stock shoot up with these performances. Maybe the biggest jump has been taken by Barnes, who was at best a marginal candidate to be added to the 40-man. Now it seems to be a foregone conclusion that he'll have to be added.
  19. TH made it sound like Hader is in the #11-#13 range in a deep system. I agree with reillymcshane, that's not hating. It's a difference of opinion on minor idiosyncrasies unique to the prospects in about the #6-#15 range. Like how do you discount Ponce's arm injury from a few years ago vs. Williams' maturity issues vs. Taylor's gap between physical tools and production vs. Coulter's huge swing and middling range in RF vs. Orimoloye's extreme rawness vs. Davies' lack of dominant stuff vs Hader's control/third pitch issues vs. Harrison's current injury vs. Gatewood's propensity to swing and miss vs. Reed's lack of power for the corner OF and lack of range for CF vs. Medeiros' inability to really even know where the ball is going a lot of time, and you get the picture. There is no perfect prospect, so what we're left to deal with is trying to compare apples to oranges to bananas to pineapples. That's why there's such a huge difference of opinion on prospects. I'd probably put Hader in the top 10, but I can see why he'd miss with some people, too. I personally find it stranger that Houser isn't higher on people's lists. I noticed a distinct lack of Brent Suter questions in the chat.
  20. Off the top of my head, Alfonso Soriano, Dante Bichette, and Adam Dunn would strongly disagree with you. It is pretty simple to be bad outfielder, I'll grant you that.
  21. Cody Ponce at #7 is probably the biggest surprise.
  22. Hart also had his value killed by being, at best, a below average defender no matter where he went. His third base experiment was a complete joke. It's the Brewers way - move a player around so much that they don't even remember which positions they were bad at. As for Coulter being able to adjust to first base, great, he can do that later. His value lies in the outfield and he needs to continue working out there.
  23. Rivera has been consistently young for his league and is an exceptionally talented defender. That's not to say his bat will ever turn out, but with three options remaining, we have some time to find out. We did not have that luxury with Perez.
  24. The guy that immediately jumps out to me is Jio Mier, former Astros 1st round pick and SS/3B/2B. Have to wonder if the Stearns connection will reap a benefit here. Alex Liddi (KC) was a pretty well regarded prospect not too long ago as well, though if I recall he wasn't good defensively at third.
  25. He is restricted physically to the outfield, or first base. He has a lot more value in the outfield, so while I don't have a problem with him taking some grounders at first, he needs to concentrate on getting better defensively in right field. And again, the Brewers have apparently taken third base off of the table for him. Jason Rogers is also not a third baseman, and creates negative value when they throw him out there. He at least did play there in college, though. Which is a lot more experience than Coulter has or will have.
