  1. Bivens was released, and who knows what Allison and Walla will do in Helena? Could be boom or bust. And then there's next year. Hopkins, Vucinich and Shaw all stink.
  2. The Brewers are probably going to use relatively high draft picks (top 15 rounds) on college position players (especially infielders) simply because they have to field a competitive team in Helena. Between Helena and the Arizona roster that we know of (i.e., not counting young Latino players who are stateside from the DSL), the Brewers have 2 or 3 guys that play the infield: Joey Paciorek, Kyle Dhanani and Kevin Berard. That's it. I would imagine Hitaniel Arias will play for Arizona or Helena as well, but he's just a 1B. I agree, though... I too hope the Brewers generally gravitate towards high school kids. The system needs to be rebuilt, not patched with limited ceiling college guys.
  3. MLB average OBP this year is .320. It's usually closer to the mid .330's, but, yes, Gomez does not even need to have a .340 OBP to be useful offensively. If Gomez could bat .320/.380/700, he'd be one of the most valuable CFs in the league. Gomez has a higher OBP than the Minnesota Twins right now. Irony strikes again.
  4. The Henderson/Miller fight should be a blast. I love Miller, but Henderson should give him more than a run.
  5. He was a recurring guest star for at least the first season. I don't know if he originally in the long-term plans or not. His character has gone from his crippled/mildly misogynistic persona to my favorite character on the show. I adore Chris Pratt.
  6. I really don't think the Brewers are going to take a signability guy with #15. What I think they will do is target a guy or two whom they think will likely be there at 15 - e.g. Swihart, Cron, Baez, Wong, Mahtook - and talk to them, to make sure that they are in the same ballpark for a contract. Obviously there are no guarantees that the guy will sign, but they will take the necessary precautions without reaching out of the first round in a tremendously deep draft class. Which is why I don't believe they'll draft Larry Greene. I can definitely dig Guerrieri at 12, despite the Brewers' ineptitude at developing HS pitchers.
  7. Gindl should not play much/any CF at the big league level. You could get by with him there for a few games, but that's about it.
  8. I don't think he is. I put Heckathorn at 12 and Ross at 23 on my last Power 50 ballot. I'm also not sure where I implied that. As for Heckathorn, I think he should be in AA too, even though he's not as polished as Ross. Both are much better prospects than Bowman, and Merklinger should probably be in AAA. There's room for them both in Huntsville.
  9. I love Komatsu, but I don't know if he'll be ready to open next year. A Morgan/Gomez platoon should be pretty good anyway.
  10. I don't think the Brewers should be looking to use a 1st round pick on a guy that could only play 1B on the Brewers. I have enough faith in Gamel's ability to play the position effectively.
  11. Because 3rd/4th starters have loads of value, too. Like I said, he can work on his changeup, which needs work, against AA hitters that have a better chance to hit his FB/SL combo. He's only going to get better by facing better competition.
  12. Even more impressively, he struck out those five guys on 22 pitches. Only 5 balls. He struck out the side in the 1st on 11 pitches. Clearly, his second inning was the poorer of the 2 innings.
  13. CJ Cron over Blake Swihart? No, thank you.
  14. I think some episodes of The Office are very funny. It's just, last week's episode sucked prairie dogs. I sat blankly in front of the screen for 22 minutes, and then had to take a bath due to the crap being slung at me during that time. It doesn't help that my opinion of Will Ferrell isn't very high.
  15. There were rumors over the offseason that Stephen Drew was available from the Diamondbacks. They might have to fall pretty far out of it to trade him, but he's relatively solid at the plate and on defense. He's only signed thru 2012, with a mutual option for 2013, but I have no idea what Arizona would want for him.
  16. Rivera, Joey Paciorek and Kyle Dhanani (who I'm not totally sure is still around, if he wasn't called up) were the only 3 guys below A-ball capable of playing SS in Wisconsin. And it will be a gigantic stretch offensively for Rivera. That's how short the team is with middle IF depth.
  17. Rivas' ERA went from 2.83 to 4.70 today. Avert your eyes!
  18. Cain also wasn't pushed too fast by his two previous organizations. The fact that he was playing in MLB when he shouldn't have been is not something I'll hold against him. What I'm saying is, he still has a few years before he hits his ceiling. There's still a chance the light bulb will turn on, even if it's on a dimmer.
  19. I don't believe that there is definitely a better defensive CF in MLB than Gomez. You could make arguments for a few guys - Gutierrez, maybe Bourn - but there is no one definitively better. He makes boneheaded throws now and again, but no one is perfect, and he's better than most everyone despite his faults. He's worth a tremendous amount on defense. And FWIW, it seems he's taking a slightly better approach at the plate this year. Fewer out of zone swings, more in zone swings, generally just swinging a bit less. It's also important to remember that he's 25 years old. I think that a lot of people truly don't know how young he is. Lorenzo Cain is 25 years old, too. No one here was too quick to run him out of town, yah? The things that drive me nuts with Gomez are his baserunning miscues, complete inability to bunt and Roenicke batting him second. Now that we seem to have taken care of the 3rd issue, let him hit 8th (or 9th) and play great defense. He's worth a lot. He really is.
  20. If Ross has another good couple of starts after this one, there's no reason for him to be in the Midwest League any longer. I might be tempted to push him all the way to AA, where he can work on his change-up and where opposing hitters might challenge his fastball and slider.
  21. If Sean Green had a minor league option remaining, I'm flabbergasted that he made the club in the first place. I assumed he made the club because he was out of options.
  22. Hopefully we'll get a nice surprise and see an injured player like Neda, Ramlow, or Brae Wright return to fill that spot.
  23. C Mike Roberts placed on the Manatees' DL. C Sean McCraw has been transferred from the Helena roster up to Brevard's to take the roster spot. McCraw is starting tonight for the Manatees.
  24. Yes, Airtran flies to the international airport in the Twin Cities.
