  1. I would assume teams and outside groups like Driveline have studied this at length, yes. It may have been based in folklore, but if teams are still doing it (or a version of it), I don't think it's a stretch to think they have validated the practice with internal or external due diligence. Too many teams rely heavily on analytics now to let me assume that it hasn't been studied in detail.
  2. Before the end of the month, both for the AAA and rookie ball affiliations. The Helena franchise is moving to Colorado Springs, but that PDC was up this year as well. The Brewers' rookie ball team could wind up in Colorado Springs, Great Falls, Ogden, or Orem in the Pioneer League. They could also opt to jump over to the Appy League, though only Bluefield is known to be up there. It's also not out of the realm of possibility that they add a short-season A-ball team in either the NY-Penn or Northwest League. Adding a Northwest League team would put them in close proximity to the Pioneer League, should they remain there as well. A handful of organizations have multiple advanced-rookie league teams, and the Brewers used to when they were affiliated with both Helena and Ogden in the Pioneer League 20-ish years ago.
  3. Which is still a tremendous asset given cost.
  4. Wade Miley is frankly an embarrassment. I can’t believe he’s being given start after start. What kind of people are running this baseball team.
  5. Yes.
  6. Yah, it’ll probably be Fresno. One of the more neutral AAA parks, which is good. Not the sexiest place in the world for your top minor league team but it’s fine. People have brought up having trouble getting players from Fresno to Milwaukee in case of an emergency, but that’s almost a complete non-factor.
  7. Thompson will be a minor league free agent after the end of the World Series unless the Brewers work out a deal with him for next season before then.
  8. Hummel was moved to OF full time prior to the beginning of the season. The Brewers have been officially listing him as an OF. He’s only filled in at catcher when they’ve been short there. The Brewers clearly do not view him as a full time fit at catcher.
  9. The Sky Sox needed to win one of their final four games to win their division. They did not. Ouch. Thus ends their existence as a AAA team.
  10. Both are eligible, yes. I doubt either gets protected on the 40-man at this point. Both have looked really good at times and really not good at times. Depending on when opposing scouts saw them, they could recommend them for Rule 5 draft consideration but I would be surprised if either got picked, and even more surprised if either stuck with another team. I'd say Kirby is more likely to be protected than Bickford.
  11. C David Fry promoted to Wisconsin from Helena, OF Tristen Lutz assigned to the AZL roster, while OF Jay Feliciano and LHP Wilfred Salaman were activated off of Wisconsin's DL.
  12. RHP Danny Reynolds promoted from Biloxi to Colorado Springs to backfill for Knebel's roster spot. RHP Josh Uhen activated from Biloxi's DL to backfill Reynolds' spot.

  14. Final: Helena 6, Missoula 5 (Again) Brewers Walk Off Osprey For Fifth Straight Win Helena Wins In Extras For Fifth Time By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Helena, MT - The current home stand has seen the Helena Brewers come up with timely hit after timely hit, and in the penultimate game in the history of Kindrick Legion Field, the Brewers gave their fans one for the books. Down 4-0 early, the Brewers scored five unanswered runs. Missoula tied the game in the eighth, and the game went to extras. The Osprey failed to score in the top of the tenth, and the Brewers got the big hit from Brice Turang, who singled Je'Von Ward to third. Ward scored on the play as the left fielder Jorge Barrosa let the ball scoot past him, giving Helena the 6-5 win, their third straight one run victory and their season best fifth win in a row. Missoula scored in the first as Buddy Kennedy doubled home Blaze Alexander to make it 1-0. The Osprey added on to their lead with a three run third, with runs scoring on a throwing error and a two RBI single from Joe Robbins. Osprey starter Wilfry Cruz held the Brewers in check with just two hits allowed through the first four innings, but an error in the fifth turned the tide in favour of Helena. Pablo Abreu popped a ball into shallow right leading off the inning, and right fielder David Sanchez had the ball in his glove and it popped out, with Abreu getting to second on the play. Mike Alescio two batters later doubled home Abreu, and Ward then doubled home Alescio with two out, cutting the Missoula advantage in half. In the seventh, Abreu smacked a leadoff double, and with one out a balk moved him to third. Alescio singled him home, and after Luis Avila singled Alescio to second, Ward delivered with another double, plating Alescio to tie the game and moving Avila to third. That brought up Turang, who hit a sacrifice fly to center, getting Avila across to give Helena their first lead. However, Missoula tied the game in the eighth, but very easily could have taken the lead. Zack Shannon drew a leadoff walk, and Eddie Hernandez singled him to second. Robbins then doubled into the right center field game, scoring Shannon to tie the game, but the relay home was in time to nail Hernandez for the first out. Nick Dalesandro walked, forcing Nestor Corredor to go to his closer Michael Mediavilla. The first batter he faced was Barrosa, who grounded into an inning ending 5-3 double play. Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the game into extra frames. With Mediavilla still on the hill, Kennedy started as the inning as the designated runner. Shannon lined a ball to Turang at short, and Kennedy was too far off the bag, with Turang throwing to second for the easy double play. Mediavilla got Robbins to strike out after a Hernandez single, keeping the game tied. That set up Turang, who lined an 0-1 pitch into left field, moving Ward to third, but Ward crossed the plate as Barrosa whiffed on fielding the ball. The Brewers with the win eliminated the Osprey from playoff contention, and have a chance to sweep the series tomorrow in the final home regular season game in franchise history. Joey Matulovich gets the start, with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 PM. *** Helena Box Score Helena Game Log
  15. Final: Kane County 2, Wisconsin 1 (10 innings) Rattlers Playoff Hopes End with Walkoff Loss at Kane County Cougars beat Wisconsin 2-1 in ten innings on bases-loaded walk By Chris Mehring GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers playoff chase came to an end on Sunday night with a 2-1 loss in ten innings to the Kane County Cougars at Northwestern Medicine Field. Tim Susnara drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in to drive in the winning run for the Cougars. The game nearly started with a bang for Wisconsin (67-71 overall, 36-32 second half). David Fry, Milwaukee's 7th round pick in the 2018 draft, stepped to the plate with one on and two out in the top of the first inning for his first plate appearance as a Rattler. Fry cracked a high, towering drive to left that carried to the wall where Ryan Grotjohn made a leaping grab to take a homer away from Fry. Jay Feliciano gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead with a home run to left that Grotjohn could only watch fly over the wall. Feliciano's blast was his fourth of the season and came with one out in the third. The Cougars (72-65, 37-31) tied the game without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the third. Rattlers starting pitcher Wilfred Salaman walked Tra Holmes and Jose Caballero to start the inning. The duo pulled off a double steal with one out. Holmes would score on a two-out wild pitch by Salaman to even the score. The score stayed 1-1 thanks to some great pitching by both sides as neither team had a runner make it past second base from the fourth inning through the ninth. Kane County starter Mack Lemieux struck out nine Rattlers over 5-1/3 innings. Tyler Keele worked 2-1/3 scoreless frames. Kyler Stout entered the game when the Rattlers had runners at first and second with two outs in the eighth to get the final out of that inning. Stout retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings. Salaman worked around a lead-off single in the fourth to keep the game tied. Matt Hardy tossed a scoreless fifth, but gave up a lead-off double in the sixth. He would strike out the next two batters before giving way to Clayton Andrews. Andrews walked the first batter he faced, but struck out Ramos for the final out in the sixth. Then, Andrews tossed a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth. He would go back out for the bottom of the tenth with pinch-runner Ryan Dobson representing the winning run starting the inning at second base. Holmes bunted Dobson to third and that was all for Andrews, who struck out six in his 3-2/3 innings. Wisconsin got creative with Christian Meister coming in from the bullpen in relief of Andrews and the winning run at third with one out and the top of the Kane County order coming to the plate. Manager Matt Erickson brought Chad McClanahan from left field to play first base and moved Gabriel García to the left side of the diamond for a five-man infield. Caballero worked the count full before sending a grounder to the right side of the infield. McClanahan made a play for the ball, but the ball went to second baseman Seferina. This left McClanahan out of position. Seferina looked the runner back to third as he raced to first and beat Caballero with a feet-first slide into the base. The Rattlers elected to walk Yoel Yanqui intentionally, because Yanqui is - including Sunday night - 25-for-74 against Wisconsin pitching this season. Meister got ahead of Jancarlos Cintron with two quick strikes, but Cintron worked the count full and drew a walk on the ninth pitch of the at bat to load the bases and bring Tim Susnara to the plate. Susnara was down in the count 1-2 after three pitches, but the next three pitches from Meister missed the strike zone and the bases-loaded walk allowed Dobson to score the winning run and end Wisconsin's playoff chances. In the second half Western Division Wild Card race, the Beloit Snappers kept their season alive by beating the Cedar Rapids Kernels 9-4 at Pohlman Field on Sunday. The Snappers are now 36-32. Kane County is 37-32. The Cougars will be the Wild Card if they win or Beloit loses on Monday. The Snappers will be the Wild Card if they win and the Rattlers beat the Cougars on Monday. The team that claims the second half Wester Division Wild Card will host Cedar Rapids in Game One of a First Round Playoff series on Wednesday night. The final game of the regular season is set of Monday afternoon. Dylan File (7-10, 4.11) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has named Lane Ratliff (7-1, 2.51) as their starter. Game time is 1:00pm. *** Wisconsin Box Score Wisconsin Game Log The end: Kane County Bottom of the 10th Defensive Substitution: Brent Diaz replaces Nic Pierre, batting 7th, playing catcher. 16. Final (Game One): Oklahoma City 6, Colorado Springs 4 (8 innings) Final (Game Two): Oklahoma City 11, Colorado Springs 8 DODGERS FORCE SKY SOX TO MONDAY DIVISION DECISION By Sky Sox PR COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox dropped two straight games to the Oklahoma City Dodgers Sunday, forcing a division decision on Labor Day Monday with a scheduled doubleheader. The Sky Sox are seeking just one win to clinch the American Northern division while the Dodgers will have to sweep the twin bill to claim the title. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Security Service Field. Game One: After three frames comprised of just four hits overall, Oklahoma City broke open first. In the top of the fourth, Edwin Rios struck a double to left field and, after a groundout, Travis Taijeron was hit by a pitch. Henry Ramos added a single to right field to plate the first run of the ballgame and take a 1-0 lead before the Sky Sox turned an inning-ending double play. The Dodgers added another solo run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. After Jake Peter walked, starter Brock Stewart moved him into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and Matt Beaty drove him in on a single to right field. The Sky Sox, who made a late comeback Friday night, sparked a late rally yet again in the bottom of the fifth. After a one-out double by Emilio Bonifacio, Rymer Liriano singled to put runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter Richie Shaffer then stepped up and skied a three-run home run to right-centerfield, giving the Sky Sox the 3-2 lead. They added one more run after Tyrone Taylor tripled with two outs to plate Nate Orf who singled, making it a 4-2 advantage. With Erik Davis in relief for starter Adrian Houser (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 SO), a hit-by-pitch to Connor Joe would start the inning for the Dodgers. After a single by Taijeron, Henry Ramos doubled to centerfield to tie the game back up at 4-4. The Sky Sox would go down in order in the bottom half of the sixth before the game was delayed and eventually suspended due to rain and unplayable conditions. The game resumed the next day, beginning in the top of the seventh inning. Both sides did not successfully plate a run so the game headed into extra innings. With a runner starting on second base, Ramos moved over the runner on his sacrifice bunt. With the go-ahead run 90 feet away, Will Smith homered to right field to give the Dodgers a 6-4 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Sky Sox had runners on first and second with no outs after Dylan Moore was hit with a pitch. Two outs later, Jett Bandy was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. With the tying run on second, Andres Blanco battled but was unable to make magic happen after grounding out to end the contest. Game Two: The Dodgers, with their backs to the wall, wasted zero time getting on the board in game two. In the top of the first, Connor Joe led off with a base hit and, with two outs, Edwin Rios homered to centerfield to put them up 2-0. In the Sky Sox second, Christian Bethancourt broke through, leading off the half with the Sky Sox first hit of the game on his towering home run to straightaway centerfield, minimizing the deficit to 2-1. Then, in the third, Liriano led off the inning with a double to centerfield. After two consecutive strikeouts, Moore came up and lifted a ball up and over the left-centerfield wall to give the Sky Sox the 3-2 advantage, marking his 10th long ball with the Sky Sox. The Dodgers caught a late rally in the fourth with two outs after Taijeron drew a walk. With two strikes, Peter clubbed a sky-high home run to right field to gain the 4-3 lead. Starter Logan Bawcom added a single while Joe walked to restart the frame. Ramos stepped up and added a second home run to the frame to put the Dodgers up 7-3. The Sky Sox crept back in the bottom of the fifth after reliever Nick Ramirez started the frame with a single. After two consecutive outs, Taylor and Bethancourt knocked back-to-back RBI doubles to plate two runs and make it a 7-5 contest. The Dodgers came right back in the sixth with two runs to extend to a 9-5 lead. Ramos started the rhythm after he brought around his fourth RBI of the game on his one-out double to centerfield. Donovan would single and Rios walked behind him, which led to Kyle Garlick's RBI single to plate the second run. They pushed it to an even 10-5 ballgame when Joe hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh. The Sky Sox, trailing five runs in the bottom of the seventh, started things off with Orf's one-out walk. After two wild pitches to advance Orf to third, Moore was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Taylor followed and with one swing on an 0-2 count plated three runs via his 20th home run, moving the Sky Sox to within two runs of the Dodgers. The Dodgers added a final run in the ninth with two outs to make it an 11-8 advantage and the Sky Sox couldn't find late magic to make the comeback, forcing a Monday faceoff. The Sky Sox head into the final day of regular season tomorrow against the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Security Service Field tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. MT first pitch in game one. *** Colorado Springs Game One Box Score / Colorado Springs Game One Log Colorado Springs Game Two Box Score / Colorado Springs Game Two Log

  21. Final: Helena 6, Missoula 5 Brewers Survive Late Osprey Attack Helena Wins Fourth Straight, Now Three Back Of First Place By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Helena, MT - With their playoff lives hanging in the balance, the Helena Brewers came up with another big win tonight, surviving a late Missoula Osprey rally to win 6-5 in the series opener at Kindrick Legion Field. Justin Bullock went six innings of two run baseball for the win, while a three run fifth inning put Helena in front for good. Helena has now won four games in a row, tying their longest winning streak this season. The Brewers with the 7-0 loss by Billings in Great Falls now stand three games back of first with five to play. Missoula struck for a run in the first thanks to an RBI double from Buddy Kennedy, but Helena fired right back as with one on and one out, Yeison Coca blasted a ball out of the yard to right for his third homer of the year. The Osprey tied the game in the top of the fourth, as three straight Missoula batters reached base, capped off by an RBI single from Cesar Garcia. Yet the Brewers limited the damage, as Mike Alescio threw out Garcia stealing, and Bullock punched out David Sanchez to keep the game tied. Still tied at two going into the bottom of the fifth, Helena retook the lead on the first pitch of the inning, as Jesus Lujano launched a ball over the right field wall for his first home run of the season, giving the Crew the 3-2 lead. The Brewers weren't done as Brice Turang tripled with one out and scored two batters later on a ground out from David Fry. Bryan Torres then singled up the middle, bringing home the third run of the inning and extending the lead to 5-2. Bullock saved his best inning for last, as he struck out the side in order in the sixth, leaving the game with a career high nine strikeouts. Helena added on a run in the seventh to make it a four run lead, but Missoula countered with two in the eighth, having the tying run at second with two out. Logan Gillaspie though got David Sanchez to ground out to end the inning. Missoula scored a run with one out in the ninth and had the tying run at first, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the game, giving Gillaspie his second save. The Brewers look for their season best fifth win in a row tomorrow in their penultimate home game in franchise history. First pitch is at 1:05 PM, with Joel Pinto taking the ball for the Brewers. *** Helena Box Score Helena Game Log
  22. Final: Wisconsin 2, Kane County 1 Rattlers Hang On to A Win and Their Playoff Hopes Wisconsin beats Kane County 2-1 By Chris Mehring GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers need a three-game sweep and a little help from the Cedar Rapids Kernels to get into the Midwest League Playoffs before the season ends on Labor Day. The Rattlers did their part with a 2-1 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Saturday in game one of the three-game series at Northwestern Medicine Field. Kane County (71-65 overall, 36-31 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. A single and a walk put two runners on with no outs. Yan Sanchez singled to right to drive in the run to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead. Wisconsin (67-70, 36-32) answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to go in front of Kane County. Darren Seferina started the rally with a ground-rule double. Gabriel García dropped a bunt for a single to put runners at the corners. Chad McClanahan tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right to score Seferina. García wound up at second after the throw home was wild. Trever Morrison gave the Rattlers the lead with a two-out single to right to score García. Wisconsin flashed some leather in the bottom of the fourth inning to maintain the lead. Jose Herrera started the inning with a double. Tra Holmes was next and he bunted right at García, who was charging from his position at first base. García picked the ball clean and first to Eddie Silva at third to catch Herrera. Then, Holmes was running on a 1-2 pitch and Jose Caballero sent a hard grounder to Silva at third. Silva made a tough pick and a throw to first for the out. Holmes never stopped going around second and tried to take third, but García didn't get caught napping. García fired another strike back across the diamond to get Holmes by at least five feet for the inning-ending double play. Scott Sunitsch scattered seven hits and worked around three walks over five innings as he allowed one run before turning the 2-1 lead over to the bullpen heading into the bottom of the sixth. Payton Henry doubled in the top of the seventh inning to start the frame, but he was left stranded as the Rattlers could not add to their lead. The bullpen made sure that missed opportunity did not hurt them. Gabe Friese took over for Sunitsch and worked 2-2/3 innings without allowing a run. He left the game with a runner on first and two outs in the bottom of the eighth in favor of Robbie Hitt, who got the final out of the eighth. Hitt retired the first two batters he faced in ninth before allowing an infield single to Jancarlos Cintron. Hitt closed out the game for his ninth save of the season by getting Tim Susnara to pop out to short. In the second half, Western Division Wild Card race, the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Beloit Snappers 5-2 at Beloit. The results on Saturday put the standings with Kane County at 36-31, the Rattlers are a half-game back at 36-32, and Beloit is two games behind the Cougars at 35-32. There are two games remaining in the regular season. If the Timber Rattlers win the final two games of the series at Kane County, they will be in the playoffs. Game two of the series is Sunday night. Wilfred Salaman (0-2, 7.13) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Mack Lemieux (4-10, 4.31) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 6:30pm. *** Wisconsin Box Score Wisconsin Game Log

  24. Final: Helena 6, Great Falls 5 Fry & Turang Power Brewers Past Voyagers Helena Takes Lead For Good In Eighth Inning By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Helena, MT - In another back and forth affair on a pleasant Friday night at Kindrick Legion Field, the Helena Brewers offense came in full from two likely sources. David Fry and Brice Turang each drove home three runs, with Turang delivering the go ahead RBI in the eighth with the score tied at five. Helena hung on to win by that final, finishing the season 11-5 against the Great Falls Voyagers, posting a 7-1 record at home. The Brewers cracked the ice in the first, as a one out single from Turang scored on a two out single from Fry, his seventh RBI of the series. However, the lead was short lived, as the Voyagers got two into scoring position with nobody out in the second courtesy of an Amado Nunez walk and an Alex Destino double. Both runners scored with one out on a single to left from Micah Coffey, making it 2-1 Voyagers. Great Falls extended the lead with a run in the third on an infield single, but the Brewers tied the game at three in the third thanks to a two run home run from Brice Turang, the first of his career. The Voyagers took the lead right back in the top of the fourth, as a leadoff single from Jhoandro Alfaro scored on a double to left from Romy Gonzalez. The Brewers though took the lead back thanks to another big hit from Fry in the bottom of the fifth. Je'Von Ward doubled to lead off the inning, and Turang walked to put the go ahead run on. Yeison Coca sacrificed both runners into scoring position for Fry, who smacked a ringing double off the left center field wall, scoring both to put Helena back in from 5-4. With the hit, Fry assured himself a multi RBI game in four straight contests. Great Falls almost tied the game in the seventh, as they had two in scoring position with nobody out, but Brandon Presley got a ground ball to short that Turang threw home to nail the tying run at the plate. He then got Coffey to strike out swinging to keep the lead in hand for Helena. The Voyagers tied the game with a RBI single from Sosa in the eight, but the Brewers had the last laugh. Connor McVey singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth, and Jesus Lujano singled him up to second with one out. Ward walked to load the bases, and Turang grounded a potential double play grounder to second, and beat the throw to first, scoring McVey to give Helena the lead. Michael Mediavilla came on for the ninth and got the save, his fourth of the year. The Brewers open their last home series in franchise history against Missoula tomorrow, with Justin Bullock taking the ball. First pitch is at 7:05 PM. *** Helena Box Score Helena Game Log
