  1. After making AZL player photos available for the first time this year, the Brewers have topped themselves and many (most?) of the DSL players have player photos now too! Henry Leon hello: http://www.milb.com/images/683732/t607/180x270/683732.jpg
  2. Grisham is not very good in center. He's probably a LF in the bigs.
  3. Would love to see a recent scouting report on him if someone has one. Second only to Braves top prospect Ian Anderson in strikeouts in the Southern League this year; in terms of K/9, he's fifth among full-time starters behind Brendan McKay (consensus top 50 prospect), Ian Anderson (consensus top 40 prospect), Scott Moss, and Jimmy Lambert, but the latter two have much higher BB rates.
  4. Final: AZL Brewers Gold 8, AZL Padres2 7 (11 innings) AZL Brewers Gold Box Score A back-and-forth game sees the Golds come out on top in extras. Victor Maria had a four hit day, and stole three bases as well. Zane Zurbrugg and Francis Florentino added two singles apiece. Rehabbing Pablo Abreu tripled, and Matthew Mika hit his first pro homer. On the mound, Luis Contreras pitched four strong innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out six. Jose Parra pitched the final three innings, and did not allow an earned run; his ERA remains at 0.00 through 13 innings this season. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log A brief walk-off: AZL Brewers Gold Bottom of the 11th Zane Zurbrugg starts inning at 2nd base. Roberto Molina hits a sacrifice bunt. Throwing error by pitcher Blake Baker. Zane Zurbrugg scores. Roberto Molina to 1st.
  5. Final: AZL Giants Orange 2, AZL Brewers Blue 1 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score Another quiet day for the offense betrayed some fine performances from the pitching staff and the Blues fall to 7-13. Cam Devanney and Darrien Miller each managed two singles; Kevin Hardin tripled and scored the Blues' only run. Two Blue runners were picked off and a Devanney error at short cost the team an unearned run. Antoine Kelly continued to shine. He pitched a career-high three innings, with only a walk as a blemish. He struck out two. In seven innings as a pro, he's allowed a hit, a walk, and has struck out eight. Jhoan Cruz pitched 4 solid innings in relief of Kelly, allowing one earned run. Keegan McCarville pitched a clean ninth. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log
  6. Final: AZL Indians Blue 11, AZL Brewers Gold 2 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score The Golds took an early lead but could not hold on, and then the game got away from them late. They fall to 5-14, tied for the worst record in the AZL. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log
  7. Final: AZL Rangers 5, AZL Brewers Blue 2 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score A rough fifth inning for starter Nick Belzer doomed the Blues as they fall to 7-12. Arbert Cipion and Orveo Saint lead the offense with two hits apiece. Pablo Garabitos contributed three scoreless innings in relief of Belzer. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log Lead: AZL Brewers Blue Bottom of the 3rd Pitching Change: Rosmer Inojosa replaces Wei-Chieh Huang. Orveo Saint triples (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Rafy Barete. Arbert Cipion singles on a line drive to left fielder Angel Aponte. Orveo Saint scores. Alex Hall flies out to center fielder Alexander Ovalles. Throwing error by center fielder Alexander Ovalles. Cam Devanney out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Rafy Barete. Arbert Cipion scores. Kevin Hardin pops out to third baseman Keyber Rodriguez in foul territory. Lead gone: AZL Rangers Top of the 5th Rafy Barete singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Cam Devanney. Keyber Rodriguez homers (4) on a fly ball to right center field. Rafy Barete scores. Angel Aponte singles on a line drive to center fielder Arbert Cipion. Alexander Ovalles singles on a line drive to right fielder Anderson Melendez. Angel Aponte to 2nd. With Josh Jung batting, Angel Aponte advances to 3rd on a balk. Alexander Ovalles advances to 2nd on a balk. Josh Jung strikes out swinging. Wild pitch by pitcher Nick Belzer. Angel Aponte scores. Alexander Ovalles to 3rd. Wild pitch by pitcher Nick Belzer. Alexander Ovalles scores. Heriberto Hernandez strikes out swinging. Randy Florentino homers (2) on a fly ball to center field. Osleivis Basabe grounds out, shortstop Danny Casals to first baseman Kevin Hardin.
  8. Turang’s defense has been fine for me. He’s 19, so he’s not going to be perfect. I wouldn’t read too much into the error totals. He has average defensive tools that play up a bit due to his baseball IQ.
  9. Brewers PD also announces that RHP Austin Rubick has been released. The 20th round pick has struggled with command during his career, including 18 walks in just 5 2/3 IP with Colorado Springs this year.
  10. After being transferred to the DSL roster, Espiritu was released. The Brewers also released a long-time Mass Haas favorite, outfielder Bryan Dimas. Dimas was a speedster but could never figure out how to hit a baseball really, striking out a whopping 209 times in 431 professional PAs spread over three years. He had barely played this year so the writing was on the wall a bit. Good luck to Bryan in the future.
  11. Brewers have signed Jamal Zalm, an infielder out of Curacao.
  12. I would not be surprised to see Bowden Francis dealt before the end of the month. Seems like a modestly successful Kevin Shackelford/Barrett Astin/Eric Hanhold nondescript college righty type that has some value to other clubs.
  13. Final: AZL Mariners 9, AZL Brewers Gold 2 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score The Mariners scored multiple runs in 4 different innings, not helped by 4 errors from the Golds, and the good guys fall to a disappointing 5-13. Corey Ray played the whole game, going 3-4 with a home run, and he may be close to returning to the Missions. Carlos Rodriguez had two hits and stole his first base of the season. Andres Melendez doubled, but was hit by a pitch and later left the game. We'll monitor that was planned time off, or if the HBP was a factor. Carlos Herrera pitched for the first time in 2019 as he begins his rehab. He walked three, allowed a hit and two runs while recording one out. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log
  14. Final: AZL D-backs 12, AZL Brewers Blue 4 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score An early lead for the Blues vanished late, and then the game got out of hand in the 9th as the team falls to 7-11. Kevin Hardin was the only Blue with a multi-hit game - the big first baseman is up to a 968 OPS on the year. Jeyner Baez, the converted catcher who has been solid for much of the year as a pitcher, fell apart in the 9th. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log They were winning: AZL Brewers Blue Bottom of the 2nd Kevin Hardin singles on a ground ball to second baseman Glenallen Hill. Danny Casals grounds into a double play, pitcher Tyler Holton to second baseman Glenallen Hill to first baseman Neyfy Castillo. Kevin Hardin out at 2nd. Danny Casals out at 1st. Anderson Melendez singles on a line drive to center fielder Wilderd Patino. Anderson Melendez steals (2) 2nd base. Arbert Cipion walks. Mound Visit. Pitching Change: Dan Swain replaces Tyler Holton. YongKang Kou doubles (1) on a pop up to shortstop Jose Curpa. Anderson Melendez scores. Arbert Cipion scores. Orveo Saint singles on a line drive to center fielder Wilderd Patino. YongKang Kou scores. Orveo Saint steals (4) 2nd base. Alex Hall singles on a fly ball to left fielder Ismael Jaime. Orveo Saint scores. Alex Hall to 2nd. Jackie Urbaez walks. Darrien Miller strikes out swinging.
  15. Final: AZL D-backs 7, AZL Brewers Gold 6 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score A first-inning grand slam from Jesus Chirinos and a rally to tie the game at 6 in the 5th inning were not enough as the Golds lose on a walk-off throwing error by catcher Roberto Molina. The game saw the return of Larry Ernesto, who was injured in the first inning of the AZL season. Chirinos, Felix Valerio, and Ashton McGee had multi-hit games. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log
  16. Final: AZL Brewers Blue 6, AZL Giants Black 2 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score Jackie Urbaez was on base four times, Luis Silva had two more hits, and Danny Casals doubled in his pro debut to lead the Blues to victory. Starter Alexis Ramirez allowed one earned run in four innings; Pablo Garabitos and Harold Chirino held the Giants at bay over the final five. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log
  17. Besides being incorrect as a declarative statement, his bat is quite a ways ahead of his glove. So getting past the stat line scouting, Dubon is more athletic and has a much cleaner swing than Arcia; he's more likely to hit and reach his ceiling than Arcia. Not saying he will, just that I think he has a decent chance to be a better hitter. Dubon's not a defensive specialist, though. He's maybe average at shortstop.
  18. Final: AZL Padres1 7, AZL Brewers Gold 3 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score Pro debut for recent NDFA signee Matthew Mika, who along with Zane Zurbrugg got their first pro hits. Ashton McGee hit his first pro home run, and Corey Ray continued his rehab assignment. Top prospect Carlos Rodriguez made his season debut after sitting out the first part of short-season ball with an undisclosed injury. It's technically a rehab assignment for C-Rod, who is on the Timber Rattlers' IL. The Gold pitching staff gave up 7 runs, walking 7 and striking out 7. Luis Contreras was the only pitcher to not give up a run, working two hitless innings. Contreras, an indy ball signee out of the United Shores Pro Baseball League, has been impressive. Through 10 1/3 innings pitched, he's allowed just two hits, while walking four and striking out 20. A trip to the Pioneer League should be in the offing for the 23-year-old. Wuilder Rodriguez made his 4th rehab appearance as the starter. Joey Matulovich, who had been on the same game rehab schedule as Rodriguez, did not pitch, so we'll see if he's been held back from pitching again, or if he's on the move to a different affiliate. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log
  19. Final: AZL Reds 5, AZL Brewers Blue 4 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score Thomas Dillard hit his first pro homer, Darrien Miller made his first pro start behind the dish, and Terence Doston stole his league-leading 12th base, but the Blues let a 4-2 lead slip away late. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log Reds walk-off: AZL Reds Bottom of the 9th Defensive switch from right field to left field for Thomas Dillard. Defensive Substitution: YongKang Kou replaces Orveo Saint, batting 7th, playing first base. Defensive Substitution: Anderson Melendez replaces left fielder Terence Doston, batting 8th, playing right field. Elvis Gomez flies out to right fielder Anderson Melendez. Rafael Franco singles on a ground ball to shortstop Cam Devanney. Axel Aleixo flies out to left fielder Thomas Dillard. Luis Lopez doubles (2) on a line drive to right fielder Anderson Melendez. Rafael Franco scores.
  20. Yah, Turang has moved from a 50 OFP to more of a 55 OFP. At 50 OFP, he’s worth $26MM by Driveline’s research. At 55, it’s $42MM. FanGraphs gave Turang a 45 at the beginning of the year but it’s been a 50 or 55 from everyone else, with more recent data showing 55s. I use OFP instead of prospect list rankings for value basis because a)there’s better research behind the OFP tie-out to $/WAR, b)OFP is more stable across various sources, c)rankings compare players to other players while OFP compares players to a performance baseline (WAR), and d)it’s closer approximation of the data front offices are using (i.e. they aren’t pulling out top 100 rankings when valuing guys). Here are the 2019 Driveline WAR valuations:
  21. Turang or Ashby are by themselves worth at least $26MM in surplus value each, Turang arguably quite a bit more given the recently improved scouting coming out on him. I wouldn't trade Ashby for Diaz, either, given that he'll be in AA by this time next year. Dubon and Supak gets to about $35MM in surplus value for me. Dunno if that gets it done for Diaz or not, but I wouldn't be interested in getting into a bidding war for the guy.
  22. Final: AZL Brewers Gold 3, AZL Athletics Green 1 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score Corey Ray continued his rehab assignment, there were multi-hit games from Felix Valerio and Andres Melendez, and a quartet of Gold pitchers were quite effective as the Golds won their 5th game of the season. 17-year-old Mario Perez in particular acquitted himself well, throwing 5 innings in relief of starter Kelvin Bender. Perez allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 2. And in his fourth professional appearance, did not walk a batter for the first time. AZL veteran Jose Parra struck out the side in the ninth. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log Felix Valerio's two "doubles": AZL Brewers Gold Bottom of the 3rd Daniel Castillo grounds out, shortstop Jhoan Paulino to first baseman Gavin Jones. Felix Valerio doubles (5) on a ground ball to third baseman Wilson Alvarez. Corey Ray doubles (2) on a ground ball to right fielder Jose Bonilla. Felix Valerio scores. Andres Melendez grounds out, second baseman Givaine Basilia to first baseman Gavin Jones. Corey Ray to 3rd. Jesus Chirinos walks. Mound Visit. Francis Florentino pops out to shortstop Jhoan Paulino. AZL Brewers Gold Bottom of the 7th Ashton McGee reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Jhoan Paulino. Ashton McGee to 2nd. Oswel Leones walks. Ashton McGee to 3rd. Passed ball by catcher Hansen Lopez. Ashton McGee to 3rd. Daniel Castillo grounds into a double play, second baseman Givaine Basilia to shortstop Jhoan Paulino to first baseman Gavin Jones. Ashton McGee scores. Oswel Leones out at 2nd. Daniel Castillo out at 1st. Felix Valerio doubles (6) on a pop up to second baseman Givaine Basilia. Mound Visit. Pitching Change: Manuel Manzanillo replaces Jorge Juan. Zane Zurbrugg strikes out swinging.
