  1. Having an extra first rounder for next year in what i'm hearing is a deep draft should be just fine. I expect with the collective agreement expiring after next year that you should be able to sign any pick for slot or just a tad over. Picks won't have much negotiationg power. If your picked in the first few rounds and don't sign you take the real risk of re-entering the draft in 2012 or later with a world draft and hard cap. So take your Million or so in cash now or risk dropping to where you get enough to buy yourself a good used Datsun in the future when your drafted as a senior in the 44th round.
  2. Lawrie would appeal to Seatlle as he is close to being a local boy and would draw in a lot of busloads from B.C. I'm not advocating trading him but Seattle is the one team that might overpay for him from the perspective that he would help drive revenue from ticket and souvenir sales all through the lower mainland.
  3. In regards to Jones it sounds like the Brewers have done their homework in regards to looking at the medical that is available. If he's withholding medical there is likley a reason. Wasn't opposed to signing him but if the medical indicates he won't play baseball why waste money. At least they did their homework on one front. Doesn't look like they did a very good job with their homework in regards to the signability of guys.
  4. I hope we get more than Covey signed or this is going to be the most disappointing draft from a Brewers perspective in a long time in terms of signing players. This so called ploy of waiting until the last day to make offers is the dumbest strategy in the history of sports period. Let's give ourselves 24 hrs to negotiate instead of 3 months. Why not just make the deadline for signing first rounders the day after the draft then. Saves the drama.
  5. If he was 18 or 19 I'd agree he might bounce back. He'll be 23 come spring training next year and pitching where? Back in Wisconsin? Yep players do have down years and bounce back. Dykstra had one last year but as I hoped and suspected he bounced back. You can blame his Dad for that. Whether he ever makes it or not who knows but at least he has a shot. As for Salome what do you even say? He has the talent but can he get his life figured out? I don't know. If he does it might not be with the Brewers. They are only going to wait so long.
  6. Nope been following prospects closely for around 25 years. Although before the internet it was tough. I'm just a little more realistic than most. If you got it you got it. if you don't you don't. Arnett doesn't have it. The velocity isn't there to work with plain and simple from the reports I've seen. Unless this is another Brewer case of him pitching hurt all year we'd save ourselves a lot of grief by just outright releasing him and moving on. If he's been pitching hurt all year and that is the cause for poor results? Well we've been there and done that way to many times in this organization over the years.
  7. Nope old grades. Or you would have seen a big fat F besides Arnett. I'm not sure there is a prospect in baseball that's fallen farther or harder than Arnett this year. I know people will say it's only one year but if he wasn't a first rounder I'm pretty sure he would have already been released. On the bright side the rest of the list looks pretty good at this point other than Salome. These prospects have performed overall better than I had thought they would at the start of the year. That's great.
  8. Could see that one coming for a while.
  9. Patience has worn thin. Actually I'm thinking more of him than anything else. I think he might need a mental break. It couldn't hurt.
  10. You have to wonder if it's just time to send Arnett home and to tell him not to pick up a baseball for 2 or 3 months. What they are doing now obvioulsy isn't working. Maybe some time away from the game would clear his head because I think it's obvious that this had gotten into his head.
  11. Here's a better question for you then Thundercat. You get ticked off when no one agrees with you, you totally miss the point on everything. Let's simplify it for you then. Why would you want to replace Melvin who is one of the better GM's in the game? Take a look at the positives he's brought to the team which far outweight the negatives. No one is perfect and we already have one of the best. Actually the whole thread is really pointless as we currently don't have a GM opening. Or is this just your way to try to get to 100 posts as quickly as possible?
  12. What delay would you be referring to Thundercat? You have made a lot of assumptions without backing up anything you've had to say in this post. People provide you with what is available and you reject it. You are the one who assumes their was a delay in re-opening things when history shows the team tried a different route by signing higher profile players like Escobar, etc. I for one seriously wonder if we would have been better off staying that route and signing higher profile guys and a lot less of them. I'm not convinced we need a team in the DSL. I think we'd be better served spending the money on scouting some areas of the world that aren't scouted as heavy and then spending more on the draft and signing free agents. The biggest problem of all is that MLB doesn't have a world draft and some kids get to be free agents and others don't.
  13. If you retain Bush over Davis you have to add the million dollar buyout figure to things realistically. Unless Bush is willing to stick around at less than 4 million I'd as soon go with Davis. I think Davis would have had better numbers had he not been hurt all year. I don't think even when he pitched he was feeling normal. I'm also hoping that somehow we find a way to make Narveson or Parra disappear, at least as starters.
  14. Only if we didn't have to give up Wolf, the Cubs paid his entire salary, we traded for him just before a Cubs series, he wasn't allowed in the clubhouse and had to dress in the janitors closet down the hall, no contact with the team. he warms up in the parking lot, and he only comes into the game to bean Cubbies when we are already up 15 runs. Then we DFA him after the series. Then and only then.
  15. Yep I would have released Jeffress a long time ago and the franchise would have been better off for it in the long run. If he actually plays well enough to stick next year I'm sure we'll end up reading about him at some point in an article about a million dollar talent with a .10 head after he pulls some stunt. As for dominating the majors he hasn't even played at AAA yet. I recall a guy by the name of Hendrickson a few years back who was going to dominate the majors as well. As for what Melvin inherited a trained monkey could have drafted better than the previous regime by just picking up a copy of baseball america the week before the draft and taking the players they recommended. As for the original post of the thread I don't see anyone calling Hicks a genious as he loses business after business. He would have been better off served just keeping Melvin.
  16. Never have understood how people can just jump off and on the bandwagon depending on how the team performs. What many people forget is Melvin didn't inherit much of a team or much of a minor league system when he took over. We now have a very respectible minor league system that is producing several players a year for the major league club consistently. Sure we could have and probably should have developed more pitching. And occassionally you make a bad pick (Jeffress/Arnett). That's all part of the game and no different than any other system out there. The bottom line is Melvin took us to the playoffs. That hadn't happened in a generation of fans. We have several of the most exciting batters and one of the most exciting pitchers in the game. We have multiple all stars and not just a token pick to have a representative. People seem to quickly forget that at one time we had Bill Hall and no one else as basicaly the only prospect in the system to look forward to. We'd be fools to fire Melvin at this point and it won't happen. This team has underacheived this year. It happens. Without making any moves at all we should be somewhere between 5-10 wins better next year. We had Paul Molitor and Robin Yount in the 80's and now this generation has Fielder, Gallardo, Braun, etc. Who exactly did we have in the 90's again? Sure we had some good players who got traded out of town at the deadline every year but no one that will be remembered as one of the Brewers all time greats.
  17. Great signing. Very happy to see this. Fair dollar amount. Now what to do with Weeks? Can he keep playing the way he is without getting hurt. Early in the year I was totally against signing him to an extension. Now I'm kind of on the fence. Not yet convinced he's the real deal but getting closer all the time to buying in.
  18. I'd sign Melvin and Ash to extensions. I'd sign Corey Hart to an extension if it could be done at market value without overpaying. I think salaries will take a dip this year in free agency after the top tier guys have signed. I also expect there to be fairly valuable pitchers with big contracts available for cheap as long as we were willing to take on the salary. I'd wait to see how that played out and trade for one as I see a few more Arizona situations arising over the winter. I'd release Angel Salome and let him get a fresh start somewhere else. I'd trade Jeffress wherever I could get some value to get rid of that headache, same would go for Gomez. I'd promote Cain to take Gomez's place. I'd trade Parra to Kansas City. Isn't that where all disappointments go? I'd offer Prince around but unless I get a king's ransom I'd hold onto him at least until the trade deadline next year.
  19. I can't recall where I read it but it was along the same lines that with all the rookie pitchers on the team Hoffman was serving as a great mentor for them. His experience is invaluable and much more valuable than some A ball guy with medium upside. Besides with the way the deals went this year we would have likely had to pay all or most of his salary anyways if we could have convinced him to waive his no trade clause.
  20. I guess the Phillies just want to go back to the World Series again for a third time in a row. What a steal for the Phillies although this should improve the Brewers chances within the central over the years to come.
  21. Which tells you how little Hudson's value actually is. I also wouldn't assume Dave Bush is worth nothing. We haven't reached the deadline yet and could be buyers before all is said and done. It is very much a buyers market right now. I'm glad Melvin has stood pat until now from a trade perspective. On the other hand I kind of wish he'd been a part of the buying at cut sale prices. But then we never know as fans who has no trade clauses to which teams so maybe he has tried. I'm wondering if Melvin thinks the winter will provide even better deals for buying?
  22. Here's a little reverse thought process. How about keeping Fielder and Hart and taking a real run at Cliff Lee in the offseason. If unsuccessful with Lee trade 3 or 4 of our top prospects to someone looking to shed payroll (and there will be teams doing that) for a #1 type pitcher. Then you sign Bush or someone similar. We would have the cash to do it with Hoffman etc coming off the books. Sign a strong defensive infielder to backup and play a little and take a serious run next year. We already have one of the strongest hitting teams in baseball. Escobar, Lucroy, Axford, and Braddock should all get better at least theoretically as they gain more experience. Cain should be ready to replace Gomez and upgrade CF. The rotation would still be suspect but serviceable. If in it this time next year I'm sure payroll could be expanded to trade for another top end pitcher to add for the stretch drive. This would be my preferred way to go. While I realize Fielder likely won't resign I'd hate to waste one of the greatest hitters in the game right now. I'm not convinced whatever we might get back would ever live up to the expectations. They seldom do.
  23. If we pull a stunt like trading Wolf somewhere he doesn't want to go for a low level prospect we can kiss our chances goodbye of ever signing a free agent again. We are stuck with him now, at least until the last year of his contract. Even then it had better be to a contender and with his blessing. It's easy to say just trade this guy and that guy because he's underperforming. We don't want to turn the team into a 3 ring circus by trading everyone who is set to become a free agent or who is underperforming for some low level prospect. If we move Prince it's only because we know we can't sign him long term. The return better be high because it's likely worth more in ticket revenue to keep him than to just give him away.
  24. How do you figure he righted the ship? In 2 of the last 3 outings he gave up 4 ER in 1 2/3 innings. And how do you get a dead arm after pitching a total of 18 innings this year to date thanks to his suspension?
  25. I'm not privy to where exactly Haren could be traded to but given that both him and his wife grew up in California and supposably wanted to return there I'm sure his no trade clause directed the deal. And while I don't have any proof given the economy in Arizona and specifically around Phoenix I'm guessing the payroll needs to be slashed and quickly. If you are the Diamondbacks are you going to tell the fans that you did the deal for economics. Not likely. You are going to try to spin it any way you can to suggest the kids you just got are future all stars. It also really bugs me when people start ripping on Melvin for not getting in on this when in all likely hood Haren had no interest in coming to Milwaukee and we were on the no trade list. What's Doug supposed to do phone up Arizona and go I need pitching bad and like that Haren fellow. I'll give you 3 top prospects for him. The response would be geez Doug I'd love to take your offer but I can't as Haren won't accept a trade to Milwaukee. This deal is just another reason why no trade clauses are bad for sports. But stupid owners grant them left right and center.
