I can't get the link to work either but my guess on Parra is no one outside of Milwaukee expects him to be in the majors to start the year so they didn't bother to list him. I would think he would have to be Red as well if listed.
I think you wait until mid June when Weeks is hot and then move him for pitching quickly prior to him going on the DL. I'm all for moving him. He is a major leaguer but has turned into a big mistake at where we took him. There is always someone else willing to take a chance on a guy like Weeks. As for Hart I still think he has value and rate him higher than most others on this board. If the right deal comes along though I'm not against trading anyone.
Nice signing. Short duration and Doug is dependable. I'd love for Melvin to surprise us by signing Bedard, Sheets or Pineiro to a 2-3 year deal and then dump Parra and Bush to save the money. Then we'd be set and a playoff contender. The playoff money could offset the difference in salary which would be minimal.
The other thing to keep in mind is a plane ticket to Japan is much cheaper to purchase in Seatlle than in Chicago. I'm not sure where he'll have left to go after he wears out his welcome in Seatlle but Japan is a step closer now.
I don't know how to link but he is trying to lock up Lee according to Rotoworld According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Mariners have "keen interest in locking up" newly acquired left-hander Cliff Lee. If he gets it done the deal is great for the Mariners.
Jack Z is sure making a splash but if he can't sign Lee to an extension and once Bradley starts complaining about whatever is bothering him at the time it could blow up on him quite quickly. He's got guts doing what he's done. I'll give him that but there is a reason no other team would touch Bradley and he gave up a fair bit to get Lee if he only has him for one year. It's not like it's the trade deadline and he was in a pennant race. I think the Cubs made out like bandits in this deal. They got rid of a cancer and save themselves 6 million or so on the deal. Pretty good days work if you ask me. They can always DFA Silva if they can't move him.
I'm surprised Bush got tendered. I hope he bounces back but I think we could have spent the money we would have saved by non tendering him and gotten a better option as a starter.
I'm beginning to worry it's not all about winning anymore but more about survival in the new economy. I think that's the reality of it now. I don't anticipate any big pitcher signings or trades either going forward into spring training. In the end that might be a smart move as well as I think certain teams will be giving players away by mid year if revenues don't turn around. If you have the payroll flexibility you can probably get a pretty good player for next to nothing. I think we'll see trades this year that no one ever would have imagined and as long as the Brewers aren't the ones giving the player away life won't be so bad.
Taylor Green doesn't have to be protected until next year unless I've missed something. I seriously doubt anyone would take Cain either given his past year. If they did he wouldn't see many at bats and you'd essentially have a guy sitting for 2 years without playing much. I doubt any team would do that. Cain needs to play and play a lot this year if he is going to move up the chain further. Braddock and Lucroy should fill roles and fill them well as I stated before.
Johnson pitched well last year but I also recall reading he left at least one start early and reported arm pain on a couple of occassions. I wouldn't be mortgaging the future on a pitcher coming off TJ and reporting ongoing arm pain. I wouldn't be very happy if the Brewers did a deal for a pitcher in this situation. Really it would make zero sense taking risks on a guy like this with the asking price it's going to take to get a deal done.
You could argue that Salome deserves a top 10 spot. However he has a lot of negatives going right now. First and foremost is he has been passed by Lucroy and doesn't project well at any other position. That alone diminishes his value a lot. Also he was hurt a lot last year and you can never take away the positive test and suspension. Overall it hasn't been so much that Salome has dissapointed more that others have stepped up or show more projectability at this point. Salome still has a decent shot at being a major leaguer but he really needs to step up this year if he is ever going to have an impact. Without knowing all the reasons I question why he's not playing winter ball either. Would seem to be the logical thing to do for a player in his position.
The brewers would need to start a package with Gallardo to get this done and I sure hope it isn't going to happen. Prospects and long shots coming off of a bad year just aren't going to cut it alone.
Like I said I hope they both develop but nothing at all to get excited about yet. Rivas hasn't pitched above A ball and is about to turn 24. When he dominates AA I might start to get interested. The bottom line is the system is starting to look pretty grim. I'm sure some of the guys at the lower levels will develop and Braddock and Lucroy are looking like the real deal in the AFL but other than that I don't see much except stop gap type players at the higher levels.
Why wouldn't he be in demand? He's the super utility type guy who knows how to play hard, can fill at multiple positions, and is a good influence on others and from all reports a great teammate. Where ever he ends up I wish him well.
Brewer was one of those high risk/high reward guys when we drafted him. He's a naturally gifted athlete that was very unpolished. Unfortunately he hasn't developed as we had hoped. The Brewers knew going in he was a project but obviously felt he was worth taking a chance on. These picks don't always work out. Brewer really has this year to show major improvements or he may as well try another sport.
There is plenty of room for both. Gamel can start the year in AAA and get hot and then when McGehee slides over to 2nd to replace the injured Ricky Weeks sometime in mid June they can call Gamel up for good. Sadly I'm not really joking about Weeks.
If he was willing to take a 1 or 2 year deal I'd definately be interested. Rivera could back him up and play more than he did this year. Bengie wouldn't be batting 8th though. More than likely he'd be hitting 5th or more likley 6th.
I guess he could write a book as well titled "My career, Up in Smoke". Seriously why would anyone want to waste a 40 man roster spot on a guy who hasn't shown he deserves one and who was quickly becoming a mediocre prospect. I'd rather give the spot to someone who deserves it and has earned it. I realize they won't drop him because they have invested so much but it's really a shame they don't. One test =stupid. Jeffress is way past that stage. From an organizational standpoint the best thing that could happen is another positive test and quickly. Then we could quit dumping money into this bottomless pit.
7-Eleven worker, Walmart Host, I don't know but my guess is this is his future as based on the decisions he's made since he signed I would be very surprised if he invested his money wisely.
I haven't been paying attention this year like I normally do but better yet what is availalbe to sign coming out of Japan as a free agent this year. Just sign the next Kawakami instead of moving assetts for him.
I can't believe I'm defending him but Soup is a very solid #5 pitcher or a decent #4. Not sure why the hatred for him. Honestly what are we going to pick up that is better than Suppan. He outperformed Manny Parra. I'd be very dissappointed if we ate salary to move him for a minor leaguer. It's not his faul the Brewers overpaid to get him.
Not in a million years would I trade for someone like Milton Bradley. I'm not sure why anyone would call him an above average hitter at this point. He sure didn't hit well this year. He's also a cancer. No successful team ever trades for a cancer. He's never going to get the close call either from the umpires. He'll always be out. I just don't get why anyone would even suggest this. Or that Hart and Hardy would appeal to a team enough to trade us a decent pitcher for that matter either. I don't think Hardy is tradeable the way he has played this year.
I guess I don't see things the same way. The coaching staff has to evaluate these guys and if they don't think Butler is ready yet then they shouldn't use him. I'm a big believer in that just because someone is recalled in September doesn't mean they should play. Just getting to work with the big league staff every day and seeing how the players conduct themselves is worth the recall. If you throw Butler in before they think he is ready and he gets lit up you've just possibly caused long term issues. If Burns gets lit up who really cares except Burns?
