  2. Final: Jacksonville 7, Biloxi 4 Biloxi Box Score Bad Marcos Diplan showed up on Saturday, giving up four hits and walking five batters in just three innings of work. The Shuckers were never able to dig out of the early hole and lost to Jacksonville. On the positive side, Code Ponce was excellent in three innings of work, and Jake Gatewood hits his 16th HR of the season. Former Brewer minor leaguer Isan Diaz homered for the Jumbo Shrimp, and another former farmhand, Jordan Yamamoto, got the win. 3. Yup, pretty much going to get traded the day after the AS game. I only say that because it seems like a giant douche move by the Orioles if they traded him during the festivities. Probably inappropriate with all the media attention he would get in what should be a somewhat relaxing time. At this point I can't imagine anything happening until after the all-star game. Heck, even if something is agreed upon, it won't be formalized until after the All-star game. The odds of Manny making it to another city to play on Sunday seems small, considering there would need to be a physical, he'd need to get to the new city, etc., etc. So may as well let him play the all-star game as an Oriole. One last glory moment for the franchise. No matter what happens, the media attention is going to be huge. No getting around that.
  4. Just saw this posted in the random notes area. Matheny essentially encouraged Bud Norris' bullying, and acted as Matheny's snitch. Weird stuff. https://deadspin.com/extremely-cardinals-report-mike-matheny-respects-bud-n-1827528307
  5. Was going to happen sooner or later. Bench coach Mike Shildt as interim manager. Hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller have also been fired. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24100246/mike-matheny-fired-st-louis-cardinals-manager
  6. I'm asking people to drop the childish back and forth crap. That's a warning for those involved. If it keeps up, we will suspend some accounts.
  7. I think you're totally correct here. There is a lot of nuance that goes into negotiating a trade like this, and some people, myself included, sort of simplify the process. To me, it's not Stearns putting an offer out there and saying, "Here's the best - take it or leave it." It's understanding before you go into the process what are your limitations - and sticking to them. Of course, we don't know every step in the process, and like you note, it can take weeks and weeks of back and forth to get to a final agreement (or not). But in that process there should be parameters that the team should stick to. And thus be willing to walk away when the price gets too high. From what it sounds, the Crew have made a serious offer already. How much they are willing to sweeten it is anyone's guess. But I wouldn't be surprised if this thing drags out through the entire month.
  8. Keston Hiura, Jake Gatewood, Lucas Erceg and Tyler Heineman all hit HRs. Hiura had four hits while Corey Ray added two hits. Batting Corey Ray: 2-4, 2 2B, BB, 2 SB Keston Hiura: 4-4, HR, SB Jake Gatewood: 1-4, HR Lucas Erceg: 1-4, HR Tyler Heineman: 1-4, HR Pitching Thomas Jankins: 6.0 IP, 7 hits, 6 ER, 4BB, 4K, Win Danny Reynolds: 2.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 2BB, 3K Jon Olczak: 1.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K, Save Notes Hiura broke out of a hitting slump in a big way with four hits, raising his batting average to .288. Biloxi Game Log Big five-run 6th helped the Shuckers to a win. Biloxi Top of the 6th Keston Hiura hit by pitch. Jake Gatewood homers (15) on a fly ball to center field. Keston Hiura scores. Lucas Erceg homers (9) on a fly ball to right field. Luis Aviles Jr. grounds out, shortstop Joe Dunand to first baseman Eric Jagielo. Tyler Heineman called out on strikes. Trent Grisham hits a ground-rule double (6) on a fly ball to right field. Pitching Change: Ryan Newell replaces Max Duval, batting 9th. Thomas Jankins walks. With Corey Ray batting, wild pitch by Ryan Newell, Trent Grisham to 3rd. Thomas Jankins to 2nd. Corey Ray doubles (23) on a fly ball to left fielder Peter O'Brien. Trent Grisham scores. Thomas Jankins scores. Troy Stokes Jr. strikes out swinging.
  9. I would argue the addition of Walker and Swarzak last season was pretty meaningful for Milwaukee. But I understand the sentiment. People want us to improve. I think something will happen in the coming weeks. What that is? Who knows.
  10. That's pleasant. I, for one, will be happy if the team doesn't over pay for Machado (or any player). And I don't think anyone will blame Burnes for something he has no control over. Stearns and the front office? Sure, but not Burnes. As for pitchforks. I really don't see people freaking out. Sure there will be a few people who scream loudly and often, but whatever. But I honestly think most people on this site understand the organization's philosophy.
  11. I think there is some truth to that. One take away I've had from reading the proverbial "tea leaves" surrounding marquee trades the Brewers were rumored to be involved in over the past year (i.e. Quintana, Gray, Yelich) as well as free agent negotiations (i.e. Swarzak this past off-season) is that the Brewers front office appears to place what they believe is a proper valuation for the trade target or free agent, and they don't appear willing to deviate much from that initial determination. I obviously don't know these things for certain, but I get the sense they don't engage in escalating an offer based on the actions of other teams. I totally agree with you. Last year, the club refused to improve on offers from Quintana and Gray. The merits of those decisions aside, it demonstrates that they put a price on a guy, and don't deviate much from the valuation. I'm good with that. If we don't get a certain guy, I'm not going to freak out. It only means we keep our assets for later use. Again, that's fine with me.

  13. Agree with you here. The Rays aren't going to give Ramos $17+ million next season. He'd accept the in a heartbeat.
  14. Wonderful news of JJ. Proud of him, and proud he's representing the team. He's had an amazing season. Let's keep it up!
  15. Reports indicate that the Orioles would prefer to send Machado to the National League. Doesn't mean the Yankees or some some other AL team won't offer enough to get the deal done, but all things being equal, Machado is more likely to go to an NL club.
  16. Final: Jacksonville 4, Biloxi 3 Shuckers Walked Off In Jacksonville Medeiros Ties Career High With Nine K's By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Biloxi relievers coughed up this one. Kodi Medeiros was excellent through five innings, giving up only one run, but Nate Griep and Jon Perrin faltered, with Perrin walking in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. Painful. Shucker batters were led by Troy Stokes, Jr. and Luis Aviles, Jr. The former had two hits and an HR, the latter had three hits. Former Brewer farmhands Isan Diaz and Monte Harrison each hit home runs. Batting Troy Stokes, Jr.: 2-3, 2B, HR Luis Aviles, Jr.: 3-4, 2B Jake Gatewood: 1-3, 3B, BB Max McDowell: 1-3, 2B Pitching Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 2BB, 9K Nate Griep: 2.0 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER, 2BB, 2K Jon Perrin: 1.2 IP, 1 hit, 1 ER, 3BB, 2K, Lose Notes Corey Ray went from a three HR game to a four strikeout game. Biloxi Game Log Perrin walks in the winning run. Ouch. Jacksonville Bottom of the 9th Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Eric Jagielo replaces Miguel Del Pozo. Eric Jagielo walks. Brian Miller out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Jake Gatewood to second baseman Keston Hiura. Eric Jagielo to 2nd. Monte Harrison strikes out swinging. Isan Diaz singles on a sharp ground ball to right fielder Trent Grisham. Eric Jagielo to 3rd. Jon Perrin intentionally walks Peter O'Brien. Isan Diaz to 2nd. Joe Dunand walks. Eric Jagielo scores. Isan Diaz to 3rd. Peter O'Brien to 2nd.
  17. If you look at defensive metrics over the last few years, Saladino has shown to be an above average defender - but nothing great. We should not fool ourselves that he is a great defender. He's certainly better than anyone else on the roster right now - but Arcia is far, far superior with the glove.
  18. Tommy John surgery for Richards. Feel for the guy. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/07/garrett-richards-tommy-john-surgery-angels.html Due to the injury, we will lock this thread.

  20. Heyman's original article said Stearns 'could' be a candidate for the position. This one turns that into 'is' a candidate. Heck, even in the article he writes 'could' instead of 'is'. Just crap.
  21. That was based on Jim Bowden's silly tweet.
  22. I read this article and thought it was a pretty fair look at the situation. As noted, past trades of this nature have generally netted a club a top 100 type prospect - plus some extras. That could mean Burnes, but also Woodruff or Peralta. However, one thing we can do is offer more of a quantity type package - instead of a deal with a clear 'headliner'. These would be guys who are not necessarily Top 100 type prospects, but are more borderline types. Baltimore, after all, isn't one player away from being good. They need lots and lots of talent. That's why a package of Phillips and Ortiz isn't bad. I see it as offering up two B- prospects instead of one B+ guy. Guys like Ray and Dubon might also fall into this class of player. I've suggested Ortiz, Phillips and Wilkerson - and I still think that is a decent offer. If you need to improve things, perhaps swap out Wilkerson for someone like Ponce. Again, you offer the O's a bag of goodness - three guys that could potentially be on their ML roster within the year - filling positions they desperately need (CF and starting pitching). No, they aren't going to get a top 50 type prospect back. But instead they get a group of guys that can potentially be part of their future.
  23. Regarding Peralta, I'm reluctant to trade a guy who has shown signs of being something pretty special. Peralta has dominated at times (see the game against KC late last month), and then been bad other days (see yesterday's game). If he can improve his control and consistency, he could be a really good starter - despite his limited repertoire. That's why I'd hate to give him away in a trade. We don't develop good pitchers very often, and the best way for us to get a good pitcher is to develop them (easier said than done). The kid only just turned 22 last month, and he has put up some great numbers thus far: 37 innings, 50K, 2.65 ERA, 2.68 FIP, 0.964 WHIP. Those are pretty intriguing numbers, even if the sample size is small. Despite yesterday's stinker of an outing, I think Freddy can be essential to this club winning this year (and beyond). The 'good' Freddy is pretty amazing. And as long as we get the 'good' Freddy more than the 'bad' Freddy, I'll take that. If Peralta ever really gets better command of his pitches is a fair question. But we will have to wait and see.
  24. UCL tear for Richards. Possible Tommy John surgery in the future. Tough break for the guy. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/07/garrett-richards-angels-ucl-damage-tommy-john-surgery.html
