  1. This team is really struggling against left handed pitchers. We have a .204 BA and a .623 OPS against lefties. That's just awful. It's just weird for so man guys to go into the tank at once.
  2. Final: Biloxi 3, Montgomery 2 Shuckers Turn Pair of Crucial Double Plays in Extra-Innings Win Houser Tosses 4.1 Scoreless, Griep Picks Up 13th save By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Photo: Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Adrian Houser had a great start on Thursday night, tossing 4.1 innings of near perfection (two hits, no runs, no walks, 3 strikeouts) in a 3-2 victory of Montgomery. The Shuckers would get nice relief work from Jon Olczak and Nate Griep - including a game ending double play in the 10th inning. Batting Corey Ray: 1-4, BB Jake Hager: 2-3, 3B, 2 BB Tyler Heineman: 1-3, BB Pitching Adrian Houser: 4.1 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 3K Quintin Torres-Costa: 2.1 IP, 1 hit, 2 ER, 2BB, 1K Jon Olczak: 2.1 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 1BB, 3K, Win Nate Griep: 1.0 IP, 1 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 0K, Save Notes Nick Ramirez made an appearance as a 1B in the bottom of the 10th. Biloxi Log
  3. Steve Stone Well done. By the way, Duane Kuiper's stats: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kuipedu01.shtml 3,700+ ABs and one HR in the majors.
  4. Right now, we have average starters - 15th in the league - but elite relievers (#2 in baseball). That makes for an above average staff. You can win with that - if the offense produces - which it isn't right now. Is it ideal? I don't know. The use of the bullpen is really evolving - making it more and more important. No matter, we will need the offense to step up. For now, I'm content with the rotation. I'll wait for Nelson, see how Woodruff does, and maybe Burnes at some point. I think the bullpen can really be a powerhouse - and there are some really intriguing young arms that can keep it that way for a while.
  5. It's great to see Segovia hitting, but the utter lack of power is going to limit him. The guy has one HR in 1000+ at bats. Kyle Wren hits HRs at 5x the rate of Segovia.
  6. Final: Biloxi 3, Montgomery 0 Brown Delivers as Shuckers Sac Biscuits Zack Brown tossed 7.0 shutout innings in Biloxi's 3-0 win By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Photo: Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Zack Brown put together a great outing on Wednesday night, tossing seven innings of shutout ball. Brown allowed on a pair of hits and a pair of walks while striking out six. Nick Ramirez and Nate Griep would finish up to preserve the shutout. Batting Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-3 Jake Gatewood: 1-3 Clint Coulter: 1-2, BB Pitching Zack Brown: 7.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 2BB, 6K, Win Nick Ramirez: 1.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 0K Nate Griep: 1.0 IP, 1 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 2K, Save Notes Brown has quietly put up some nice numbers in 2018. In 39.2 IP he has a 3.18 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and has walked only 9 batters while striking out 42. Biloxi Log Not a very exciting game, but in the 5th the Shuckers stitched together a couple of of walks, a single and a sac fly to get a pair of runs. Biloxi Top of the 5th Clint Coulter walks. Wendell Rijo walks. Clint Coulter to 2nd. Corey Ray flies out to center fielder Thomas Milone. Clint Coulter scores. Wendell Rijo to 2nd on the throw. Troy Stokes singles on a line drive to left fielder Brandon Lowe. Wendell Rijo to 3rd. Lucas Erceg out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Brandon Lowe. Wendell Rijo scores. Troy Stokes to 2nd. Jake Gatewood flies out to right fielder Nathan Lukes.
  7. He made the Marlins roster to start the season, but was injured and hasn't come off the DL.
  8. i can't ever recall the brewers recalling an injured player (not to report) and putting him on the 60-day disabled list. johnny hellweg was a candidate a few years back, but the brewers never took advantage of such. Did we do something like this with Yhonathan Barrios? I don't think we recalled him, but we put him on the DL in Spring Training so we could have the extra roster spot?
  9. I have been a proponent of giving Orf a chance to play, but I don't want to oversell the guy. At this best, he will likely have limited value. He just doesn't have the skillset to make him anything special. He won't hit for power, he doesn't have game-changing speed, and his arm isn't great - which limits his ability to play SS. He does offer a skillset that might - and I stress 'might' - help the team. He has generally be a consistent hitter - a solid batting average, a decent walk rate, and limited splits - meaning he could play full time. Personally, I think the revolving door of 2B is just a mess. I'd rather give one guy the job and see how he can do. If Orf got called him, he's probably likely to do poorly than do well. Actually, probably more likely to do poorly than do well. But it's not like all the other guys are lighting the world on fire. So I'm open to taking the risk.
  10. And little Nate Orf spends another night crying into the shoulder of ragged and worn teddy bear.
  11. Salvador Perez is a good player, and his contract - while not small - isn't out of line for his talent. Concerns: He turns 28 this month, but has a lot of miles on his body. He had a minor ligament tear in spring training - and missed 3-4 weeks. And most importantly, his defense - while once stellar - isn't what it used to be. Part of this is just getting older. He's a big guy - 6'3"/240lbs - and he's likely lost some of the quickness and agility he had when he was younger. Another thing - he doesn't walk - so his OBP is right around .300 for his career. While not a great player, Perez would be a welcome addition. His bat is okay - but wouldn't be a game changer. Still, it would be a nice upgrade from our current receiving corps. Personally, I wouldn't give a ton for the guy - considering his contract. But I doubt KC is going to deal him for cheap. They really value him, and probably see him as a great resource while rebuilding their roster. In the end, it can't hurt to ask.
  12. I think this team has too many question marks to splurge on a pitcher like Fulmer at this time. Let's see how some of the other question marks on the teams evolve first before unloading our best prospects at a time where we just aren't that good.
  13. Orf is hitting .353 on the road this year - so he's hitting everywhere - not just Colorado Springs. His slugging percentage drops off on the road - .412 vs .574 - but he still has an OBP of .400+. I don't see the guy having an OPS of more than .700 or so - but if he gets on base 35% of the time and plays good defense - that could really help us.
  14. At this point I want the club to just say to Villar, "Hey, the job is yours. Prove us you deserve to have it. We won't mess with you for a couple of months." And if they aren't willing to do that - well, what's the point of having Villar? If they don't trust him or don't believe in him - then just move on from the guy. They replaced Sogard with Nick Franklin - saying it was for his left handed bat. Well that's what Villar does best - hits left-handed. So I'll say again, why keep Villar if you don't believe in him? If that's the case just move on. Bring up Nate Orf or try and get Neil Walker or someone like that and call it a day. This refusal to make a decision at 2B just seems to be helping no one.
  15. Just wrapped up the first season of "The Good Place" with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson. Very funny and very clever show. Highly recommend.
  16. I don't understand this move. I can only assume that the Brewers will trade for Kirk Nieuwenhuis if the is an injury to an outfielder. And if Arcia goes down, bring back Yuni B!!! And I play 2B, 3B, 1B as well as SS. http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/mlb/players/full/6218.png&w=350&h=254
  17. Final: Montgomery 10, Biloxi 5 Biscuits Early Runs Too Much to Overcome For Shuckers Moore Drives In Four At Riverwalk By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Photo: Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score More ugly pitching from Biloxi doomed the team on Tuesday. The Shucker staff walked nine batters - plus gave up 10 hits - to lead to a 10-5 lose. Cody Ponce had eerily similar numbers to Thomas Jankins - who was shelled in last night's game vs Montgomery. On the positive side, Dylan Moore stayed hot, getting three hits and driving in four runs. He's hitting. .380 for the year. Batting Corey Ray: 1-3, 2BB Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-3, BB Dylan Moore: 3-5, 2B, 4 RBI, 2 SB Jake Hager: 1-2, 2BB Pitching Cody Ponce: 3.1 IP, 7 hits, 8 ER, 3BB, 1K, Lose Josh Uhen: 0.1 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 3BB, 0K Angel Ventura: 4.1 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER, 3BB, 5K Notes The Shuckers had their chances on Tuesday but only went 3-16 with runnings in scoring position. Biloxi Log The 4th inning was particularly ugly as the Shuckers gave up three runs by - mostly - being unable to throw strikes. Ponce hit a batter and then Josh Uhen walked three guys. Montgomery Bottom of the 4th Nathan Lukes triples (2) on a line drive to right fielder Clint Coulter. Jake Cronenworth out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. Nathan Lukes scores. Ryan Boldt hit by pitch. Nick Solak singles on a line drive to center fielder Corey Ray. Ryan Boldt to 2nd. Pitching Change: Josh Uhen replaces Cody Ponce. Brandon Lowe walks. Ryan Boldt to 3rd. Nick Solak to 2nd. Dalton Kelly walks. Ryan Boldt scores. Nick Solak to 3rd. Brandon Lowe to 2nd. Michael Brosseau grounds into a force out, shortstop Jake Hager to second baseman Blake Allemand. Nick Solak scores. Brandon Lowe to 3rd. Dalton Kelly out at 2nd. Michael Brosseau to 1st. Brett Sullivan walks. Michael Brosseau to 2nd. Pitching Change: Angel Ventura replaces Josh Uhen. Michael Russell strikes out swinging.
  18. Exactly. The walk rate was worrisome, but he was playing well and is a good glove. Would have been interesting.
  19. Final: Montgomery 11, Biloxi 0 Bats Quieted By Cabrera In Shuckers' Loss Biloxi's Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped By Biscuits By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Photo: Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score This was about as ugly as it gets. Biloxi managed only three hits (all singles) and four walks on Monday - scoring no runs. Meanwhile, the pitching staff - including Thomas Jankins (who had pitched so well this year) - got hammered, giving up 12 hits (including four HRs) and six walks. Batting Blake Allemand: 0-2, 2BB Dylan Moore: 1-3, BB Pitching Thomas Jankins: 3.2 IP, 8 hits, 7 ER, 3BB, 1K, Lose Brad Kuntz: 2.1 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 2BB, 1K Wuilder Rodriguez: 2.0 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 1BB, 1K Notes Jankins rough outing saw his ERA rise from 2.03 to 3.63. After a hot start, Troy Stokes Jr.'s batting average has fallen to .241. However, he has walked 18 times this year, giving him an OBP of .353. Biloxi Log This inning was about as bad as it gets. Montgomery Bottom of the 4th Dalton Kelly walks. Michael Brosseau hit by pitch. Dalton Kelly to 2nd. Brett Sullivan singles on a ground ball to right fielder Clint Coulter. Dalton Kelly scores. Michael Brosseau to 3rd. Brett Sullivan out at 2nd, right fielder Clint Coulter to shortstop Jake Hager. With Jermaine Palacios batting, wild pitch by Thomas Jankins, Michael Brosseau scores. Jermaine Palacios walks. Thomas Milone flies out to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. Michael Russell homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Jermaine Palacios scores. Ryan Boldt triples (3) on a line drive to right fielder Clint Coulter. Nick Solak singles on a ground ball to right fielder Clint Coulter. Ryan Boldt scores. Pitching Change: Brad Kuntz replaces Thomas Jankins. Brandon Lowe grounds out, second baseman Wendell Rijo to first baseman Jake Gatewood.
  20. Our offensive woes really go around, but the biggest issues are SS, 2B and catcher. SS is not really worth messing with as Arcia still has a lot of upside - and showed a decent bat last year. Not great, but okay. With his youth and defense, he can still be a good player even if he doesn't hit that much. Plus, there's other spots to address that aren't as bright. 2B - let's face it, Sogard is not the future. Perez is a limited player best suited for utility work. Villar offers the most upside after this productive 2016, but it just seems like that is the outlier. None of these guys look like they are league average players. Unfortunately, Dubon's injury takes away one option. That means a trade - or Nate Orf. As for trades, Jed Lowrie would be a good get - but Oakland is playing well and probably won't want to give him up. Perhaps if they fade he will be made available. Starlin Castro would be okay - but he makes a lot of money and is under contract through 2019. Dozier is having a down year - but would be a good get if he's not too expensive. The team could take a flyer on someone like Neil Walker as well. Otherwise, Orf would be a big risk. He offers little upside - but he has his good points (good batting average, solid glove). I'd say the team should either rid themselves of Sogard, and just let Villar play for an extended time - 4-6 weeks - and see if he comes around. They could then keep an eye on the trade market and move on from Villar if he falters. The other option is Orf. You only do that if you think Villar is toast. If that's he case, move on from the guy now. No point in waiting. Just let him go, bring up Orf and tell him he's got a couple of months to show us what he can do. If he does well, then great. If not, you turn to the trade market. Catcher - At this point, I'm not counting on Vogt coming back. Bandy looks like a minor leaguer, so I don't see the value of hanging on to him and hoping something suddenly changes. As for Pina, he's the best of a bad situation. He's probably fine as a reserve, but his nice 2017 might be a bit of a fluke. The options at catcher aren't great. I like Nottingham, but it's probably too early to go with him. I'd explore the trade market. Wilson Ramos of Tampa is interesting. A reunion with Lucroy would be welcome - even if Luc isn't that great anymore. Wellington Castro - from the White Sox - has been okay in the past few years. He's not having a good year thus far - but he would likely be an upgrade for us. The best get would be J.T. Realmuto - but he would cost a lot. Still, if you wanted a guy who could be a #1 catcher for a few more years - he's the man.
  21. Fulmer would be awesome to have. But he's going to cost a ton. Not sure we want to go there at this time - especially with offensive issues that may need addressing.
  22. I will second the advice on the deck. Sand down and stain and seal. I've done a couple of decks like this. I use a simple electric hand sander to strip the paint and stuff off the wood. Works great. This comes from a person who is not particularly 'handy' with projects like this.
  23. Final: Biloxi 6, Jacksonville 5 Shuckers Sweep Jumbo Shrimp Moore Falls Single Shy of Cycle, Knebel Tosses Scoreless Frame in Sweep-Clinching Game By Spencer Siegel / Biloxi Shuckers Biloxi Box Score Dylan Moore, Nick Franklin and Lucas Erceg each hit a home run in a 6-5 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Moore had three hits and missed fell a single short of hitting for the cycle. Kodi Medeiros gave up four runs in five innings of work, but only one run was earned. Biloxi managed the win despite three errors - two of which were throwing errors by Medeiros. Batting Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-3, 2B, BB Lucas Erceg: 1-4, HR Nick Franklin: 2-3, HR Dylan Moore: 3-4, 2B, 3B, HR Pitching Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 2BB, 3K, Win Jon Olczak: 2.0 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 2K Corey Knebel: 1.0 IP, 1 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 2K Nate Griep: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 2BB, 1K Notes After a slow start, Nick Franklin has upped his batting average to .288. Dylan Moore is hitting a robust .366 on the year. Corey Knebel pitched a scoreless inning of relief in a rehab appearance. Biloxi Log A big 5th inning - including HRs from Nick Franklin and Dylan Moore, put the Shuckers up for good. Biloxi Bottom of the 5th Troy Stokes Jr. walks. Lucas Erceg flies out to center fielder Monte Harrison. Nick Franklin homers (2) on a fly ball to right center field. Troy Stokes Jr. scores. Dylan Moore homers (3) on a fly ball to right center field. Nick Ramirez walks. Pitching Change: Jorgan Cavanerio replaces Max Duval, batting 9th. Tyler Heineman called out on strikes. Clint Coulter flies out to center fielder Monte Harrison.
