  1. I was curious about this as well. Is he a 1B? He's never played there according to his Baseball Reference page. Perhaps he's destined for LF - assuming Braun is dealt.
  2. The Thames deal is interesting. $15M is nothing to sneeze at, but it's not a huge investment. You could take $15-20M and sign Chris Carter for two years. You'll know exactly what you are getting. The upside is limited, however. Thus, I like the rolling of the dice with Thames. If he pans out, it's a great move, the team gets a good player at a reasonable price for several years. If not - well, now is the time to have such failures.
  3. Let the Pedro Alvarez speculation begin....
  4. I'm okay with the move. I like Carter, but I also see he's very limited, and let's face it, he's not a longterm part of this club. I'd rather take gambles - like we did with Villar and Broxton - and see if we can strike some gold. 2017 is the time for such experiments. Carter is pretty much a known quantity. He will find a home - no problem - and on a team that fits his talents. I wish the man success.
  5. Dbacks are selling high on Segura and Haniger. Interesting move. I feel as if Seattle is going to be disappointed in the end - but you never know. Walker is kind of an enigma who might implode in Arizona. The ballpark there is pretty heavily a hitters park (2nd most runs scored in the league after Coors - http://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor ), and Walker gives up a lot of HRs - 25 and 27 the last two years (in 169.2 and 134.1 innings, respectively). This is one of those deals where you never know how it's going to end. Perhaps they all end up being disappointed.
  6. So is he stuck on your 25 man roster then and follow all other Rule 5 guidelines? That would be embarrassing. Well I guess if he doesn't stay on the 25-man roster he likely "returns" to your organization, right? Strange scenario. Doesn't he actually get exposed to waivers first - and then if no one claims him, the original team would get him?
  7. Immensely funny tweet from Kate Upton - Verlander's fiancee. It's NSFW, so I won't post it here - but here's the link for those interested.
  8. I really don't care that much about awards, but it's kind of sad that two writers - both from Tampa - left Verlander completely off their ballot. I mean, who picks JA Happ over Verlander? Happ had a nice year, but Verlander threw 30+ more innings (while leading the league), gave up fewer walks, had 90 more strikeouts (while leading the league), and having a better ERA, WHIP, FIP, and WAR (while leading the league). What did Happ have more of? Wins. In the end, Porcello had a fine year, so that he won isn't a big deal. I just wonder about some of the people that vote.
  9. Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer take home this year's awards. The American League voting was really close, with Verlander actually getting more 1st place votes. But two writers left Verlander off the ballot altogether - and Porcello edged him out 137 to 132. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/18067034/rick-porcello-boston-red-sox-wins-american-league-cy-young-award http://www.espn.com/blog/washington-nationals/post/_/id/2047/scherzers-second-cy-young-adds-to-his-cooperstown-cred
  10. If Morton avoids injuries, I think it's a great deal for them. As noted on mlbtraderumors.com, Morton is really tough on righties, and that should play well in his new park as it's a really short porch out in left. Again, the key will be staying healthy.
  11. Actually, the Brewers originally had two high schoolers in their top three picks. One, Perez, had an issue with PEDs, and was thus eliminated. But the team absolutely loved him. A second, Groome, had character issues that drove him off of many teams' radars, including Milwaukee. The third guy they liked was Ray - who they ended up with.
  12. 1. Trade a bunch of stuff to Detroit for Verlander and Miggy Cabrera. Don't know what it would take. 2. Sign Justin Turner to play 3B 3. Sign Castro or someone other catcher I just more than doubled our payroll. We have an elite left handed bat that will give us one of the most exciting lineups in baseball. We have an ace pitcher to headline our rotation. I've manage to cripple our finances for years and probably emptied out 1/2 of our farm system. It sounds a lot like 2011.
  13. That was pretty awesome.
  14. Turner has a 136 OPS+ over the last three years. Last year was actually his worse year of the three mostly because he tanked hard for the first couple months. Has nothing to do with market. He's one of the best free agent hitters this year. Turner has been really good the last few years. He'd be a great guy to have, but I'd be wary as well. He'll be 32 in a week, so he's starting to get to that phase where he could easily decline. And he's had some back issues - always a bit of a concern. Honestly, he'd be a great player to have if we were set on winning the next couple of years. Hits well, plays good defense, etc. But I just don't know if we are there yet. No matter, the guy is a good player.
  15. Quintana has four years of control if you include two team options in 2019 and 2020. And at really good rates ($10.5M and $11.5M). As people have noted, the proposed trade for Quintana isn't good enough. He's a really good pitcher, and he's under control for four years at about $37M total. That's an insanely good value in this market.
  16. I love the absolutes people place on players. Didn't we learn anything from the Sith.
  17. To me Davis is the kind of guy you get in 2018 or 19 - when team thinks it can compete. 2017 should still be an evaluation process of players. Broxton and Santana most importantly, but there's also Wren and Reed we might want to look at. And ultimately, there's Brinson. Of course, if Braun is dealt, or someone moved to 1B (Santana or Braun would be the logical candidates), then perhaps you might want the guy. But for me, Davis is a good player that best benefits a contending team as a semi-regular player - just like last year with Cleveland. Right now, I want the young guys to get at bats.
  18. Remember Fernando Valenzuela and his screwball. Man, that was a pitch. Dude threw that all the time. Lasted about 6-7 years living off that thing. Fernandomania.
  19. I just look at Scooter and wonder what team really would want him. The majority of teams are set at 2B. A rebuilding team isn't likely going to want him as he doesn't have much upside. He's arby eligible so he's going to get more expensive, which might be more important to some teams than others. But he certainly won't be a ton of money. I guess look at the list below and see where Scooter fits. Maybe the Dodgers if they don't sign someone. Angels work as well. Perhaps Oakland or the Mets. The lack of versatility really limits him. Obviously, teams could shift someone (such as Segura moving back to SS). BAL - Schoop - 2.1 WAR BOS - Pedroia - 5.6 NYY - Castro - 1.3 TOR - Travis - 2.9 TAM - Forsythe - 3.4 DET - Kinsler - 6.1 CLE - Kipnis - 4.1 MIN - Dozier - 6.5 CWS - Lawrie - 1.3 / Saladino - 1.8 KCR - Merrifield - 1.8 SEA - Cano - 7.3 HOU - Altuve - 7.7 TEX - Odor - 2.4 OAK - Lowrie - (-0.4) LAA - Giavotella - 0.5 WAS - Murphy - 4.6 PHI - Hernandez - 3.3 MIA - Gordon - 0.8 / Dietrich 2.4 NYM - ATL - Peterson - 0.4 PIT - Harrison - 1.8 CHC - Zobrist - 3.8 STL - Wong - 1.5 / Gyorko 2.9 MIL - Scooter - 0.9 CIN - Phillips - 0.8 COL - LeMahieu - 5.2 LAD - SFG - Panik - 1.1 SDP - Schimpf - 1.8 ARZ - Segura - 5.7 FAs - Neil Walker - 2.4, Utley 2.0
  20. I know we've talked about this last year when Wily was struggling, but I wanted to see what people thought about the idea of Peralta being shifted to the bullpen. Peralta is a mostly a fastball/slider guy (he has thrown those two pitches 92-95% of the time over his career). He has struggled against lefties (.853 OPS vs lefties vs .724 OPS vs righties over the last three years). His velocity hasn't changed much over his career, and he still throws 94-95 mph on a consistent basis. Like many guys, Wily has traditionally gotten worse as he's gone through the line up: 1st time through order: .730 OPS 2nd time through order: .739 OPS 3rd time through order: .808 OPS 4th time through order: 1.182 OPS (very limited data - only 45 ABs) So with all that, I'm thinking that maybe his skill set would work better in relief. He might increase his velocity a bit, not have to manage a long game, etc. He's got lots of talent, but maybe a starting pitcher just isn't in the cards. Wily will be 28 next May. He's got almost 650 innings under his belt. I'm starting to think there's enough data to say he's not going to be a good starter. But he does have talent, thus the idea of moving him to the bullpen. Just wondering what others thought.
  21. Counsell gets a new 3-year deal. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/brewers-craig-counsell-extension-manager.html
  22. Some proposals: 1) No leading off from bases, thus no stealing. Can't leave the base until contact is made. 2) One swinging strike is all you get (foul or miss) or two called strikes 3) Two balls is a walk 4) Must chug beer passing 2B (if batted ball hits the barrel, it is in play) I finished many 7 inning games within an hour with these rules in place. I don't favor a move to eliminate the pitcher and use a tee.
  23. The Angels reportedly turned down a trade offer for a 2B who's offense was better than his defense, according to the Angels beat writer. While a lot of people speculate it's Howie Kendrick, Scooter would probably fit the description as well. Here's the tweet: Heard today the #Angels turned down an offer for a 2B who has a better bat than glove. Think defense is definitely a high priority at 2B.
  24. I'm excited! Not because RA Dickey is joining the Braves, but that the Hot Stove is cooking up! Dickey (who is a former Brewer farm hand) gets a 1 year deal for $8M, plus the Braves hold an option year at $8M with a $500,000 buyout. Not bad for a 42 year old pitcher who didn't establish himself until he was 35. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/11/braves-sign-r-a-dickey.html
  25. Personally, I say no. But every time this question is asked, you have to ask 'How much money (if anything) are the Brewers willing to include in a trade?" Your return is going to be massively different if you send them $1M as opposed to $40M. Alvarez has top of the rotation potential. DeLeon is ready for the majors, but doesn't have quite the upside - more mid-rotation (which is still pretty sweet). I'm skeptical of the Dodgers trading a guy they can insert into the rotation this year (DeLeon) or a guy they think has all star potential (Alvarez - who they forked over $16M for just a year ago) - unless it's for someone like Chris Sale. I should add that I am more skeptical than some people about Braun's value due to his advancing age, recent history of injuries and his PED stuff. It's not that I don't think Braun has value, I just think it makes people much more wary than if you have someone without those issues. But that's just me. It only takes one team to fall in love with a player. So you never know. Honestly, the guy I really like in the Dodgers system is Walker Buehler. He had the potential to be the top pick in the 2015 draft, but he hurt his elbow and needed TJ surgery. Dodgers took him late in the 1st round of 2015. He would have been a perfect buy low guy. But he was supposedly throwing near 100 when he finally debuted this past August. I bet he starts popping up on Top 100 lists even though he's only pitched a few innings as a pro.
