  1. I saw this as well. Whether he means it or not, he's saying all the right things. If he really wants to be part of the future, I assume he's let the team know that. I don't think we're going to get anywhere close to fair value for Ryan (due to all the reasons we have talked about - age, salary, injuries, PED history, etc.). We don't have any bat that approaches his level in the majors or minors. What he'll be like in 2-3 years, I don't know, but I could see the club hanging on to him without a decent return. We don't have a lot of money on the books, so we could afford someone like him for a few years.
  2. If the Bueller's arm was progressing as you would expect after TJ, I'd go for this one. I know the pitchers are a few years away, but that's how you get these types of guys. I'd hate giving up Luc, but I think the end game is that he's leaving any way, and you maximize the return while he's at his peak. The guy is raking and teams should cough up a lot for him. And this is not just one year - but two playoff runs. And he's cheap. Plus they extend him, or get compensation (assuming he doesn't get hurt or go in the tank).
  3. Again, a lot depends on what kind of drug test that he failed.
  4. Wow. That's going to kill Perez. I guess the next question is 'what kind of drug test' did he fail. If it's smoking pot, teams might be willing to forgive and forget. If it's PEDs, that's gotta scare people. I guess that depends on the kind of PED. There are so many.
  5. Can you really pass on a Pint for the Brewers? The marketing opportunities are endless.
  6. This would be a really nice haul. Another guy you could look at is Walker Bueller (whom you mention above). He was the club's top pick in 2015, but needed TJ, so he's probably out for most, if not all, of this year. But he went into the 2015 season as arguably the top college pitcher, but he struggled with arm issues (eventually leading to the surgery). I don't know that much about Bueller (I'm sure some of the draft experts have opinions), but like the idea of grabbing potential high level talent like him when he's going to cost us the least. Sure it's a risk, but that's part of the game. The Brewers could always take back some salary if the Dodgers needed to gain a little financial relief.
  7. The other thing about Holmes is that teams often are more willing to give up lower level guys than players close to the majors. The lower the level, the more questions about a guy, the less you count on them for the future. A guy like Urias, for instance, looks major league ready (despite his young age). It's simply harder to give up a guy like that - a player who can help them now (or in the near future). Holmes is a few years away - making letting him go a little easier (I think). And let's face it, a lot of teams want to win now. Giving up an A league player is often easier than a prospect ripe for the majors.
  8. I wanted Sonny Gray in that draft. People said he was too small to stick as a starter. I also liked Kolten Wong - but thought it would be a bit of an overdraft at our pick.
  9. I'd love to have Grant Holmes from the Dodgers. Not a top 50 guy right now, but I think he will be shortly. He's putting up good numbers in the hitting-friendly Cal League (3.30 ERA, 63K, 20BB, 60 IP). Add in someone like 1B/OF Cody Bellinger, and that could be an interesting package. No matter what, I'd like to get a good arm with upside. It's risky, but it's also the best way for Milwaukee to get those kinds of players.
  10. San Diego really could use help anywhere. Their pitching prospects are weak. So if Milwaukee really wanted him, they'd want young pitching back. Just isn't likely for someone we don't need that badly. That said, San Diego's system is really pretty bad, and so is their major league team. Their best player, Jon Jay, is a FA after the season. Guys like Kemp and Upton are pretty much untradeable. At least Upton will be off the books soon. Not so with Kemp. That said, Renfroe - along with Manny Margot - are just about ready for the majors, and are solid outfield pieces to start rebuilding around. I still can't believe the Padres convinced themselves they could be decent last year. They really hamstrung themselves. At least they got Margot from Boston in the Kimbrel deal. But man, they gave up Joe Ross and Trea Turner for Wil Myers. Ross has a 2.37 ERA this year. And I like Turner a lot. Those are a some nice building blocks for a team. Plus, if they hadn't gotten Kemp (who they owe $18M a year through 2019), they could have spent money on things they really needed.
  11. With the 8th pick in the draft, San Diego takes California native Blake Rutherford, OF, from Chaminade College Prep in Simi Valley. This was our first really contested pick. Here's the breakdown: Rutherford - 4 Ray and Garrett - 3 each Kirilloff and Collins - 1 each The Detroit Tigers on the clock. We had 12 voters in the last round, so please keep it up if you can as a few people are leaving us (likely due to the fact they haven't researched this many players).
  12. San Diego takes Blake Rutherford. I cast the swing vote! I'm like the Vice President casting the tie breaker in the senate. Not that they ever pass anything.
  13. With the 7th pick in the draft, the Miami Marlins take SS Delvin Perez from the International Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico. I thought there would be more variety on this one, but Perez was pretty much the consensus. The San Diego Padres are on the clock. I don't think this will be as simple as the earlier picks. Please have your selection in by EOD on Monday, June 6.
  14. I know it won't happen, but Moncada would be awesome. The guy already has 26 xbh this year - plus 33 steals to go with 39 walks (and his .300+ BA). He does strike out a lot, but I would live with that. The big thing is that he plays 2B. Pedroia is signed through 2021, so unless you can move Moncada, where do you play him?
  15. I think this is pretty much it. Sure you have some rough ideas about when things will improve, but the nature of the game is so unpredictable. Injuries can have dramatic consequences. And no one really can predict when a prospect will be ready (if at all) - and even then - how long that prospect takes to become decent (look at Jackie Bradley, Jr. - a few years ago he was a top prospect. Then he hit sub-.200 - and last year at this time people were saying he might be a backup type. Now he's looking like an all-star. It just took some patience.) The team hopes Lopez and Hader develop as top flight starters - but you just don't know when, if, etc. The Cubs saw Arietta develop into a Cy Young pitcher - something no could have predicted. It helped move up their window of contention. You just gotta take the good with the bad, adjust as best as possible, and stick to a smart, solid plan.
  16. Sneed putting up solid numbers at AA for Houston: 3.29 ERA, 38 IP, 43K, 13BB, 1.252 WHIP
  17. The ChiSox have added James Shields. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/06/padres-likely-to-trade-james-shields-within-24-hours.html Padres get youngsters Erik Johnson and Fernando Tatis Jr. Pads will pay $27 million of the remaining $56M that Shields is owed - assuming he won't opt out of the remaining two seasons of his deal.
  18. Scooter can't even make the tag properly. That was awful follow through on his part. Bad fundementals.
