  1. Suter was #26 in our community poll. He is not in any top 20 or 30 type list (that I know of). Someone might take him due to the fact that he's a lefty who's had success at AAA, and thus could be ready to help at the major league level.
  2. I'd guess in the 20-25 range. Reports aren't high on his ability to play CF or RF full time due to lack of athleticism and arm strength. And without much power, that makes it hard to see him as anything more than reserve or platoon player. Add in the fact he broke his leg last year, and probably won't be ready for camp, and it's hard to get too excited about the guy. That said, he seems to have a decent hit tool. The guy takes his walks and gets on base. That's a nice skill to have - one that will get him playing time. With some luck and opportunity, he could be a regular or perhaps a semi-regular as the lefty in a platoon situation.
  3. I was going to say the same thing. They're likely aiming to have flexibility on the roster, especially with the fringe players.
  4. Don't know much about Flores, but I love that he takes his walks and gets on base. .376 OBP at AAA in 150 games - that's pretty solid for a 22-23 year old. As for Sardinas, I just question if he'll ever be more than a slap hitter. He may just be too slight - but time will tell.
  5. Our #24 man, Cy Sneed, has been lost in the trade to Houston (with Milwaukee acquiring infielder Jonathan Villar). Newly-acquired Javier Betancourt (in exchange for K-Rod) may very well slot in right around that same spot. Stearns doesn't seem adverse to making moves, so I won't be surprised to see some more additions (and maybe subtractions) from our Top 25 list this off season.
  6. Well done. Made me laugh out loud.
  7. Russell really needs to be aware of the 'three strikes and you're out' laws with criminals.
  8. Says he has a cannon for an arm, but (at least back then) made a lot of errors. He's had 43 errors in 184 ML games - most of them (162) at SS.
  9. Switch hitter. Perhaps looking at 2B? Villar hasn't graded out very well at SS thus far, but the size sample is limited. Based on his major and minor league numbers, it doesn't look like he fits at 3B. Unlike Hernan and Scooter, he can probably handle all the IF positions - making him an ideal back up. Sad to see Cy leave.
  10. Regarding Chisenhall, as noted, he moved to RF and played outstanding defense there. His 3B play has, generally, been below average. All that said, Chisenhall is the kind of guy that if you can get cheap - and you think you can help him get back to being a .280 hitter like he was in 2014 - you can do it. It's not like he's blocking anyone important if he's at 3B. If it works, you have yourself a nice asset to deal at the trade deadline, or the next offseason. If you fail, you blow a couple of million bucks and move on. Again, there are several things that have to work for something like this. First, the player has to come cheaply. You don't want to give up a good prospect for a guy like this. The second thing is you have to have an obvious hole. You don't want to trade or sign a guy like this just to block a young player who we would be better off giving the job to. If Chisenhall was released or made available via a cheap trade, I'd add him and let him play most everyday (at least against right handers). Of course, if the team adds someone else to play the position, or they really like an in-house option (Perez or whomever), then fine, just pass.
  11. I'm optimistic about the future for the first time in several years. I know the next few years are going to be a struggle, but I like that we are (I think) establishing a plan to excel. The farm system is revitalized, we have some young guys on the verge of making their debuts, the big league roster has a lot of intriguing (if still emerging talent). While I want to win ball games next year, I can also just enjoy watching the young guys develop. Arcia, Reed, Hader, Davies, Houser, Phillips - we'll probably see all these guys this year - and that's just a few of the players.
  12. Actually, that's exactly what scouts and organizations do with players. They make honest assessments about a player's future so they can best help the major league club down the road. It is, obviously, an inexact process. Teams can't always predict how big or strong a guy will get. Or how he'll process the mental parts of the game - or a million other things. The younger a guy is, the more difficult a projection is. And different people hold see different things in players - again, an inexact process. But there's nothing wrong with saying a player looks like he's going to be this or that down the road. For the organization, it's essential to know what you have in the pipeline. In fact, they're foolish NOT to do these projections. It certainly doesn't mean that won't change - it happens all the time.
  13. Virtually every scouting report pegs Betancourt's upside as a fringe starter (high side) or utility guy (realistic view). To see anything more than that in him is stretching it. There are boatloads of guys like Betancourt in the minors - guys who teams hope develop some tool that will make them a major leaguer. Javier looks okay, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for his arrival.
  14. Vogelbach's bat is interesting, but the guy is probably best suited for DH. He's huge and a horrible fielder - one Cub site said his defense was 'atrocious' and compared him to a 'less athletic David Ortiz' at 1B. Ouch. And then there's his base running - it's as bad as you can get - MLB Pipeline gave him their lowest possible grade as a runner. Figuring out what it would take to get him is sort of tough. Power is so tantalizing, and the guy has some serious power potential. But in the end,he's not really hit that many HRs. Prince Fielder - who I'm sure a lot of people will compare Vogelbach to (both skill wise and physically) - had 28 HR in 103 games as a 21 year old at AAA. Vogelbach will be 23 next month, and his best season is 19 HR - between A- and A+. The guy takes lots of walks. My gut is that he can fetch an okay bullpen arm or a platoon type guy. He's just so one dimensional. Smith is probably an overpay, but that's just a guess. I might be overvaluing Smith. Personally, I hope we can avoid these horrible fielding type guys. I think you end up overpaying them in the long run because their raw numbers look great on paper - but then you pay for it through all the little things that we overlook - bad range at 1B, slow runner, etc. I did read one site that brought up the question of whether Vogelbach will be protected in the Rule 5 draft (he's played 1/2 season at AA, but not at AAA). If he's not protected, I wouldn't be shocked to see someone take a flyer on him. Probably an AL team with an open DH slot.
  15. He's not exciting. He's the 11th ranked prospect in what is arguably the worst system in baseball. Maybe the PTBNL will help make this trade a bit more exciting, but losing his salary is probably the best thing for the club, as well as clearing a roster spot and simply letting our young guys play.
  16. The answer is Javier Betancourt.
  17. Pretty much a salary dump for Milwaukee. I am excited to be able to type in the 'Betancourt' on a regular basis again!
  18. I was thinking the same thing - McFarland looked ticketed for Biloxi. Chris will be 23 in a week or so - any chance they jump him to AAA? Just thinking weirdly.
  19. MLB Pipeline ranked Betancourt #11 in the Tigers system. Here's their write up: "The young Venezuelan infielder has the skills to handle the job. Betancourt largely played second base and it is his best position, with the chance for him to be an above-average defender there. But he's capable of playing shortstop as well, though his range - thanks to his fringy speed - is probably better suited for the right side of the diamond. Betancourt isn't all glove, though, with a very good feel for making consistent contact. He doesn't walk very much, but he also doesn't strike out a ton. He's an advanced offensive player for his age, one who has a line-drive approach to all fields and has the chance to add a little pop as he matures." .263 BA, .304 OBP, .640 OPS. in 2015 at A+ ball. Posted almost identical numbers at A- in 2014. As noted above, he doesn't walk much, but doesn't strike out much either. Doesn't steal bases (most is 9 in a season). Won't be 21 until next May.
  20. From what I hear, they are looking to flip Revere for a starting pitcher and find an everyday LF. If Revere is indeed traded for a pitcher then Davis and Smith become very attractive pieces to their roster. Also, Toronto's bullpen could use another lefty to solidify the bullpen. Would you prefer a package of Harris, Pentecost and Burns instead? Toronto really drained the farm system. The guys I wanted - Norris and Hoffman - are gone. Harris is good - I'd take him in a heartbeat - but at this time, he's not an elite guy (the potential is there, however). Pentecost has been sidelined for over a year - I like him, but I'd want to make sure he's healthy and able to catch (if he can't catch his value really drops). Burns is projects to be more of a utility infielder than a regular. Personally, I don't want to have anything to do with Revere - let's develop our own players instead of adding mediocre veterans who won't be around in two years.
  21. Yuni Betancourt hears the call.....
  22. I really like Pentecost coming out of college, but he's missed more than a year with injury. Has anyone heard his current status? Just wondering.
  23. The situation with Trea Turner playing 1/2 the year in SD's minor league system, when everyone knew he was heading to Washington, really forced the league to clarify the situation.
  24. As noted a bit ago, this is no longer the case. Any player can be traded once the season ends.
