  1. Thank you. You're welcome. It's one of my favorite all time movies. My 14 year old son and I will sit and shoot quotes back and forth to each other (while my wife shakes her head and says we are weird - which we are).
  2. To me the thing that stands out is the immediate, high upside depth that the Cardinals have, plus their nice mix of young and veteran players. It gives them the best chance to do well now - and in the next few years. This year, when the inevitable injuries come, the Cards have some nice impact type guys that can step in. Taveras and Piscotty, for example. And Carlos Martinez can move into the rotation. It's some nice depth to have. The Brewers have Nelson at AAA. And Thornburg could shift into the rotation. But we don't have any hitters in the minors like the Cardinals do. The Cardinals big issue might be they lack the 30 HR type player coming up through the ranks (at least that I'm aware of). The major league roster has a lot of nice hitters, but they are more 15-20 HR type guys - not big sluggers. They lost Beltran (not a huge lose, in my opinion, as his defense was bad and getting worse), and Holiday is getting older. Doesn't mean they won't do really well, but it could be an issue.
  3. We've got a little time for something real to happen. Once Gorzelanny comes back, he'll likely get sent out for a minor league rehab. That'll buy another week or so. Until then, someone else could get hurt, or Duke might just look mediocre (not an unlikely scenario, especially if he has to face a lot of righties).
  4. I just don't see any reason anyone trades for Rickie. I realize this season's totals are a small sample, but he's hitting .158. He hasn't even taken any walks. He's swinging at junk (33% of his swings are at pitches outside the strike zone - lifetime he's at 21.6%). Since he's not playing every day, perhaps he's pressing and trying to make something happen. If anyone would want him, we'd have to pay his entire salary and the buyout.
  5. We really shook the pillars of heaven, didn't we, Wang?
  6. I remember sitting in a bar with a buddy watching the game. I went to the pay phone and called my dad as soon as the game ended to see it he had been watching (he had). I'll never forget that play by Yount at the end. As soon as the ball went off the bat I was thinking it was going into the gap. http://m.mlb.com/video/v7999461/41587-juan-nieves-tosses-first-brewers-nohitter
  7. Interesting to find out that the Brewers were one of five teams to offer Cuban 1B Jose Abreu more than $60 million. Nice to know they were aggressive in going after an area of need. Abreu went to the White Sox for 6 years and $68 million. "Five teams bid more than $60 million for White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu, as I reported Saturday on the FOX Sports 1 pregame show. The other four, according to major league sources, were the Astros, Brewers, Rockies and Red Sox." http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/new-replay-system-flawed-as-weekend-games-at-yankee-stadium-showed-041314
  8. Will Smith is on pace to pitch 95 games. K-Rod and Henderson 88. Thornburg's on pace for 103 innings. These guys are pitching fine now, but this kind of things catches up over 162 games. Part of the reason our good relievers are pitching is that we are winning and games are close. It's understandable you want your best guys out there. But the team is going to have to work in Wang simply to keep the other guys from getting overworked. I think the Braves a couple of years ago were criticized when they overworked their big three relievers. They were brilliant all year, but faltered in September as they all got tired.
  9. There's an article on Grantland that talks about this same thing. I think they have the same quote. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/matt-moore-baseball-tommy-john-surgery-historic-rate/ Essentially, we're training kids to be showcase warriors. We're teaching them to throw harder, and at a younger age. Kids focus on baseball, playing it 12 months out of the year, putting more wear and tear on the arm than kids did in previous generations.
  10. You put this about as effectively as anyone. RRR will say he doesn't want to put Wang into a tough situation because he doesn't want him to fail. But rotting on the bench isn't going to do a thing for Wang or the Crew. When Wang comes in, he's going to be horribly rusty from not playing. He'll then do poorly, which will only reinforce the notion that Wang can't be trusted, so he continue to never play, sucking each time because of disuse. If the team wants to contend this year, they can't stash a guy on the roster who won't contribute. That's just ridiculous. It might be a different story if we were Houston. Just let the guy play. I'm not saying use him as the closer, but he's got to get the chance to show us something or this will just turn into the season's big joke.
  11. With Estrada, Lohse and Gallardo set for free agency after 2015 (assuming we pick up Yo's 2015 option), it would really be to our advantage to move Thornburg into the rotation next year. Circumstances might force this to happen (injury, ineffectiveness, etc.). But if the team thinks Thornburg's future is in the rotation, then they should get him in there in 2014.
  12. Really interesting article in the rise of TJ surgery. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/matt-moore-baseball-tommy-john-surgery-historic-rate/ In 2014, 20 players have had the procedure - the most ever. And that doesn't include Matt Moore, Braves reliever Cory Gearrin and Angels prospect Brian Moran - who all will need the surgery. A lot of the blame (from baseball people) goes to young kids pitching too much. They pitch year around and train to make themselves throw harder (and thus look better to scouts). We're making young kids better - and doing it at an earlier age. But that may be making them more at risk for arm problems later.
  13. Best stat so far.
  14. Nine games into the season the Brewers enjoy the following statistics in the majors: - 2nd fewest walks (18) - 1st in sacrifices (6) - 2nd in SBs (10) - 1st in caught stealing (4) - Have no pinch hits (in 7 ABs) - 3rd in BA (.284) - 4th in SLG - Lowest ERA (1.95) - Most shutouts (2) - tied with 5 or 6 other teams With the small sample, this really doesn't say a lot. However, I would say that is shows we are an aggressive team - both in the field and at the plate. None of that is a surprise.
  15. Aiken continues to get talked up. Here's a quote from baseball prospectus: "We are targeting a college pitcher with our first round pick, but Aiken would have been one of the exceptions for us. Now that he can hit a 7 (97 MPH) on the gun, there's just no chance he falls to us. Honestly, I'm not sure how he falls out of the top few picks now. What isn't there to like? You didn't need a radar gun to fall in love with him before, but now he's the complete package." Sounds like a top 5 pick at this point. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23277
  16. I like that the day I brought up Beltre as a potential 500 HR guy, he goes and gets hurt. Maybe I have a special power. Who should I curse?
  17. nice interview. certainly sounds like Lohse will be gig somewhere as a pitching coach after he calls it a career.
  18. At this point, the Brewers have $3.5 million committed to 1B for 2014. They won't just throw that out the doror yet. They'll see how the season goes for a 4-6 more weeks before considering making any changes. If Reynolds is on pace to hit 30 HR and .230, he's an adequate player for 1B. There's no need for Morales or anyone else. The same is true if the team stinks. There's no need to add big ticket player (except a younger player who could help us in the future) if we aren't in the playoff hunt. However, if the team is doing decent, and we're getting a sub .700 OPS come mid/late May from 1B, the team could look for a replacement. Morales could fit the bill. But if he's still on the market in mid-May, there's little reason not to wait a few more weeks until after the draft.
  19. Most fans around the country don't give two craps about the Brewers and Ryan Braun. They know he cheated and lied, and they'll toss out a few boos when they hear his name, but for the most part, they won't think about him the moment they leave the ballpark. I believe that a few very vocal people (at games, in the media, on message boards) will never let it go - and that's their prerogative. If that's where they want to focus their energy in life - better them than me.
  20. The game feed on ESPN Gamecast is just terrible. I have to sift through all sorts of crap just to see the last play. Totally agree. It used to be nice and clean and easy to use. Now they incorporate so much stuff it's ridiculous.
  21. Uecker is doing the game - I thought he wasn't going on the road this year. Am I wrong?
