  1. Deal is for $8.5 million. https://twitter.com/#!/jcrasnick/status/156987702229733377 Nice move for the Reds.
  2. http://www.mlbtraderumors...to-sign-paul-maholm.html 1 year, $4.75 million. Club option for 2013 at $6.5 million. I think the Cubs did well with this one. Maholm isn't great, but he's a solid #4 or $5 guy.
  3. Katin is out for the year. He had a meniscal transplant in his right knee. http://www.jsonline.com/s...d-r53gh35-135902123.html Notes about the injury are at the bottom of the article.
  4. Patrick Newman at NPB tracker looks at Aoki: http://www.npbtracker.com...2/looking-at-aokis-case/ It's probably the best overview of Aoki that I've seen. Not that optimistic. He's really concerned about his lack of power and how it will translate. Aoki's HR dropped to 4 last year. And his doubles went from 44 to 18. Not a great sign. His comparison is to Juan Pierre.
  5. I believe Aoki would be an unrestricted free agent after next season. He's better off going back to Japan if we low ball him. He can then pick the best situation for himself next year - financially and professionally.
  6. Something like $4.25M I believe I'm scratching my head at the pointlessness of making a bid with no intention of offering him a large enough contract to entice him to play here. If they didn't think he's worth paying a low end starter/platoon guy salary, why block him from going elsewhere? He would seem to be a guy that could make other guys expendable in deals for other needs and be a viable top of the order table setter for the big bats.John, you nailed it here. What's the point of the whole thing if you aren't willing to pay him? I'm not saying Aoki is worth a lot of money. I'm just perplexed as to why get involved if you aren't willing to be competitive for the guy. I think Melvin and company put in a blind bid without thinking they'd get Aoki. Oh well, I guess they work him out, and if they think he's something special, they can make a real offer. If not, they just low ball him knowing he'll go back to Japan for another year, and the team will get its $2.5 million back.
  7. Yuni gets savaged by the Fangraphs folks. Not unexpected. But pretty funny to read: http://www.fangraphs.com/...e-meaning-of-betancourt/
  8. Yuni is certainly not the worst guy ever. We paint his performance with broad strokes - most of which is ugly. But the guy has some decent pop for his position. His ability to go out there every day is noteworthy. And he's been a pretty tough guy to strike out. All nice things, but his hacking is so bad, it just murders his on base potential. Combine that with bad defense, and he's pretty bad. But not the worst available. I guess the thing with Yuni is there was a lot of potential that seems to have been wasted. His first few years he actually fielded better. But he peaked at about 25 - both as a hitter and fielder. He put on weight. He looks lazy. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think he pushed himself to the next level. He road his talent to being a solid player - but never worked to get better at that point. He got soft, which made him lose a little speed and quickness. His OBP has declined, ever so slightly, since his first year as a starter. He hasn't adjusted. He had the chance and ability, which is what makes him so frustrating. I look at Carlos Gomez and get frustrated by his inability to grow as a hitter. He's got so much athletic ability, it frustrates you. But no one is accusing Gomez of not trying. He works hard on defense. He seems to try to get better as a hitter - each you they talk about how much he's working with the coaches, etc. You never heard that about Yuni. Oh well, Yuni is gone. He had some good moments last year. Some bad ones too - but every player has those. I'm just happy he's not our player any more. I'll take a glove guy like Izturis any day of the week.
  9. For some reason there are a lot of proposals in the trade forum that include Hart. Some people feel that Gindl and a righthanded platoon batter of unknown origin could hit close to Hart's output. Not sure about that, but it's been said by some. We thus save $9 million and can spend big somewhere else. I argue that Corey doesn't look great doing things, but he's an ok fielder - certainly not great - and he's got an .866 and .865 OPS over the past two years. 57 HR. That's pretty friggin' good. Better than good. Is it great? No. But very good. I think it's a mistake to consider trading him. I'd ride out his prime years, get 25-30 HR from him each season, and then say 'thanks' and let him walk when he gets a $12 million/year deal just as he starts to age.
  10. This is exactly the kind of move I figured the team would make. Bring in a glove first guy who can handle the middle infield slot. I think you next look to acquire a young player who fits the same bill - but with a little upside - maybe an outside chance at starting some day. I'm not talking a major prospect or anything, just a guy with 'utility infielder' written all over him, who might, if given the chance, be a solid starter. Let this guy battle it out with Izturis for the back up spot. If he loses, he heads to Nashville as depth. Not sure who this guy is, but it would be my plan.
  11. I think it appropriate for the major league forum. It's not like Izturis is some AAAA guy who's looking for a chance. I would think he's going to seriously be in the mix for the final infielder spot, so I think it works best in this forum.
  12. This sucks. I bid $51.5 million for his rights. I wanted to have him play catch with my son, cut the grass around the house, maybe a few other odds and ends.
  13. Yuni gets $2 million and a chance for $500,000 in playing time incentives. I figured he'd get $1-2 million. Dude's lucky to have a guaranteed job.
  14. bummer. I was hoping we'd get to play against him more often.
  15. Right now I would think Aoki would be a nice player to have - especially if Braun gets the 50 game suspension. He can handle LF for the first 50 games of the year. After that, you assess how Gamel is doing at 1B, and how the Morgan/Gomez CF platoon is doing, and how any injuries are affecting the team. If Morgan is having issues (which some people seem to worry about - I'm not, as long as he plays only against righties), Aoki moves over to CF. If Gamel is not looking like the answer at 1B, you can move Braun or Hart to 1B and play Aoki at a corner spot. (You could also move Ramirez to 1B and let Green start at 3B - but that's another story.) Also, if everyone is playing well after the first 50 games, you can use one of the players as a trade chip to fill other needs. Finally, don't forget about injuries. Braun missed about 10 games last year. Hart about 30. Morgan and Gomez both went on the DL. Knowing the answer to Braun's appeal would be really nice. But having a good player - even if you don't have a spot - is a nice problem to have. Especially if the price isn't too high.
  16. I like how rosenthal said the Brewers will work Aoki out in Arizona before deciding if we should try and sign him. I just shows they didn't really know what they were getting. I bet they never expected to win the bidding.
  17. Brewers officially win the bid: http://www.mlbtraderumors...s-to-norichika-aoki.html
  18. But he hit .339 over 2006-2010 - before the new baseball brought down averages in Japan. I'm not sure where you get a MLE calculator for players in japan, but it should be different for using stats from the 2011 season. Maybe the .298 = .258 is calculated with the new reality in Japanese baseball. Otherwise, we should probably look at him moe as a .339 hitter and convert it from there.
  19. yeah, i thought the same thing. he dismissed Nakajima - the shortstop whom the yankees ended up getting - because they didn't know anything about him.
  20. Cool the team is looking at all angles to get better. Aoki sounds like an interesting player. Interesting to see how the team will use him.
  21. Remember the Japanese league changed balls last year and stats went down for most everyone. The ball is a bit smaller. Oaki's drop was pretty consistent throughout the league.
  22. what about Omar Vizquel as our back up middle infielder. dude can't hit much - maybe get .250-270 BA without any power. But he was always good with the glove. He's 45. Anyone watch him much last year? Is he toast? just curious. Everyone wants a guy who can hit and field - so do I - but if he can do both well, then he's a starter somewhere and getting paid as such. So, realistically, who can we get to handle the back up infielder job - 2B, SS - at a reasonable price. omar is just a thought.
  23. Here's the most awesome of benches: Russell Branyon Matt Stairs Bill Hall Jonny Gomes Willy Mo Pena No starter is allowed to get hurt, and our bench swings for the fences at every at bat.
  24. agreed. just give pebadger the thread. his stuff is pretty fascinating. And appreciated.
  25. The things that have leaked out clearly show that Braun has herpes, the ebola virus, shingles, menstrual cramps, small pox, a runny nose, is gay, is a scientologist, is a Wicca, eats bran flakes, goes bowling once a week, and wears/design ugly shirts.
