  1. I wouldn't be surprised if Greinke will see how the team does in 2012 before signing any extension. I think he'll want to protect himself in case the team implodes for some reason next year. He doesn't want to be caught in the same situation like he was in KC, where he stuck in a long term deal and no hope of winning.
  2. Tsk, Tsk. Have you forgotten the Franklin Stubbs signing? Jeffrey Hammonds?
  3. this is what i was looking at. even if we get $30 million. or even $50 million. we are still $100 million behind the Angels.
  4. Anyone have a clue as to what the Brewers will get on their next TV contract. I just saw that the Angels new deal will give them $3 billion over 20 years. That's $150 million/year. Here's the story on the TV deal: http://www.latimes.com/sp...20111209,0,4052777.story
  5. This is important. We are not just replacing Fielder's production. We are replacing a combination of Fielder, McGehee and Yuni (you need to consider offense and defense). Let's say we can get a .800 OPS out of 1B, and a .750 OPS out of 3B. That's still not replacing the offense of Fielder/McGehee. But it's getting reasonably close. And when you consider the improved defense, we can close the gap even more. I don't expect Gonzalez/Green/Gamel in 2012 to be better than Fielder/Yuni/McGehee of 2011. It could even be a disaster. But if the young players step up, get regular playing time, are given time to grow into their jobs, I think they can do okay. I think it's a good risk to take.
  6. Nice bit about Gonzalez at Disciples of Uecker: http://disciplesofuecker....wers-sign-alex-gonzalez/ Notes how Sea Bass should hit better in Milwaukee, as Turner Field suppresses right handed pull hitters like Gonzalez. Basically says we added the best remaining SS at a (we assume) reasonable price.
  7. Gonzalez actually had 4 sacrifices last year. That means he can bunt, which Yuni didn't seem to know how to do. RRR must be drooling at more sac bunts next year.
  8. I think Cabrera is toast. I saw him a couple of times last year and he didn't impress. Maybe he was hurt, but he almost looked like a guy who just didn't care or was taking pain medication.
  9. I wonder if the team will try and add a veteran middle infielder - a Nick Punto-type. Guys like Alex Cora, Omar Vizquel, or Jack Wilson wouldn't be bad. That assumes we go with Gamel/Green/McGehee at 1B/3B. We'll need someone to back up SS - probably not wise to start Gonzalez 150 games. Give him a weekly rest. I wouldn't mind adding a young SS instead of a veteran. A guy with a good glove who can handle himself around the infield well. It's a risk, but maybe they mature into a starter. Justin Sellers of the Dodgers was one guy I saw last year that I liked. Probably doesn't project at more than a utility guy, but it would be nice to try someone like that - a player with potential upside. I still think McGehee should be let loose. I'd rather get a 1B/3B who could mash lefties with a little more certainty. Of course, that's easier said than done.
  10. Defensive stats are tough (UZR, dWAR), but most people who use them will agree it's best to look at several seasons as a true gauge of a guy's ability. Yuni dWAR (baseball reference) 2011: 0.5 2010: -0.2 2009: -0.8 Yuni UZR (Fangraphs) 2011: -6.9 2010: -9.5 2009: -16.7 Gonzalez dWAR 2011: 1.1 2010: 0.7 2009: 0.1 Gonzalez UZR (Fangraphs) 2011: -0.3 2010: 5.5 2009: 7.7 I think Gonzalez will be a pretty good upgrade defensively. We're not talking Ozzie Smith upgrade, but most any thing is better than Yuni. And if Gonzalez and rebound a bit with the bat - all the better.
  11. This could get better if Yuni signs with St. Louis.
  12. I keep expecting an announcement saying the dodgers had signed Craig Counsel to a 2-year deal.
  13. Gonzalez wasn't great by any means last year. I hope he can rebound a bit. He was really good in 2010 - a 3.4 WAR with 23 HR (it was 1.1 WAR in 2011). I worry about his age - 35 in February. Gotta be better than Yuni.
  14. Gonzalez is almost the same as Yuni at the plate last year. Neither guy walks. Both have okay power. Gonzalez strikes out twice as much as Yuni. Over the last three years Gonzalez ranks a bit better, but not by a lot. And at 35, he's going to crash and burn before Yuni, who will be 30 next year. Defensively, Gonzalez is ranked better, but 2011 wasn't all that stellar. His UZR ratings show him steadily dropping. You have to wonder if he's fading (I haven't really watched him play lately, so I can't give any clear report on him). He turns 35 in Feburary, so it's not out of the question that he's simply lost some of his defensive pizazz. Gonzalez has been more inconsistent. He did quite good in 2010 (23 HR), but terrible in 2009, and nothing great last year (just a 1.1 WAR). In the end, I'd take the risk on Gonzalez than Yuni. He offers some hope of good - even average - fielding. And maybe the new environment would get him exciting and result in a bit of a bounce back year. If you get a 1.5 WAR out of him, you're showing a big improvement over 2011. 2011 Yuni: .252 BA, .271 OBP, .381 SLG, .652 OPS Gonzalez: .241, 270, .371, .642 2009-2011 Yuni:.252, .277. 381, .658 Gonzalez: .244, .281, .397, .678 WAR comparison (from fangraphs): Yuni/Gonzalez: 2011: 0.5 / 1.1 2010: 0.9 / 3.4 2009: -2.1 / 0.6 Fielding: 2011 Yuni: Fielding %: 19 of 22 qualified players Range factor: 19 of 22 Zone rating: 19 of 22 Gozalez: Fielding %: 5th of 22 Range factor: 16 of 22 Zone rating: 17 of 22 UZR Ratings: Yuni / Gonzalez 2011: -6.9 / -0.3 2010: -9.2 / 5.1 2009: -19.7 / 7.7
  15. Good point. Are there any NL teams left besides us who seem like they have a decent chance for Prince? Nationals might look at him after missing out on the top pitchers. Just a thought.
  16. Pujols barely makes more than Vernon Wells. Man, that was the fleecing of the century.
  17. Maybe we can trade K-Rod to the Yankees for Nakajima.
  18. I imagine the Cards will resign Furcal now. Probably add a reliever. As someone said, they are still a good team.
  19. I'm shocked. I just didn't think Pujols would do this. Oh well, good for us.
  20. http://www.mlbtraderumors...-sign-albert-pujols.html wow
  21. Why are people saying K-Rod will get $13-14 million via arby? I thought that, at this point of their career, the money is based upon production, etc. And if you look at comparables, Bell is getting $9 million, Papelbon is getting $12.5 million. It seems to me K-Rod would get a salary closer to Bell's figure - maybe $10 million. However, it seems like everyone believes he's going to get a raise. I didn't think it was this simple. Any help on this one?
  22. 2012 Team is below Rounded to nearest half million dollars. Sign Gonzalez to play SS. Bring back Parra as a reliever. We have an awesome pitching staff. We need a back up middle infielder. We could non tender McGehee to save a couple of million, but for now, he's there. It's $90.5 million, and you could probably easily trim a couple of million from my figures. I can live with this club. It's a great staff. With the hitters, you're swapping Yuni for Gonzalez. That's a wash offensively. Then you swap McGehee's and Fielder's production for Green and Gamel. That's 50 HR between Fielder/McGehee and around an .810-820 OPS. I don't expect Green/Gamel to do that. But if they can play respectable. Maybe between .750-.800 OPS - that would be fine. Sure it's a risk, but you have to take those at times. Then we improve defensively at 3B, SS and 1B. That makes up (in theory) some of the lost offense. That leaves this team: C - Lucroy - 0.5 C - Maldanado/Kotarras - 0.5 1B - Gamel - 0.5 2B - Weeks - 10 SS - Gonzalez - 3.0 3B - Green - 0.5 3B/1B - McGehee - 3.0 INF - ? - 1.0 LF - Braun - 6.0 CF - Morgan - 2.0 CF - Gomez - 2.0 RF - Hart - 9.0 OF - Gindl or Schafer - 0.5 SP - Marcum - 7.0 SP - Gallardo - 5.5 SP - Greinke - 13.5 SP - Narveson - 0.5 RP - Wolf - 9.5 RP - Axford - 0.5 RP - K-Rod - 10 RP - Loe - 3 RP - Parra - 1 RP - Braddock - 0.5 RP - Kintzler or a rookie - 0.5 RP - Estrada - 0.5 TOTAL: $90.5 million EDIT: I removed Saito from my roster after seeing Melvin say "We're losing Hawkins and Saito."
  23. Okay, we got K-rod. Fine. Live with it. I wanted Gamel and Green starting all along, so I'm okay without aramis Ramirez. But we gotta add a decent fielding shortstop. And a good backup infielder. I'd like saito back as well. Sad to see hawk leave. We made our bed with this. I'm okay with it. It was a risk that didnt play out like we wanted. Just have to move on the best way possible. I Wish we'd let go of McGehee, but that doesn't look like its going to happen.
  24. Correct. But he had a $1 million contract - not $10 million.
  25. What pitcher would want to hang around Milwaukee with Ramirez and Yuni manning the left side of the infield. Last year, the pitchers were diplomatic about errors and so forth, but it's gotta grind at you when guys constantly can't make routine plays.
