  1. David Weiser's Huntsville Update: LOOIE'S BIG DAYYou'd think a day after winning the Western Division title, there would be some sense of complacency that would show up on the field. I didn't see too much evidence of that........ The Stars did leave 10 men on base, a little more than we usually see, and Luis Martinez was consistently behind in the count in the first two innings. In fact, he failed to throw a first pitch strike to 5 of the first 7 batters to face him....... But Looie did rebound nicely from his worst outing of the season, when he gave up 7 runs on 9 hits in 5 2/3 innings vs. Chattanooga last Sunday. Looie threw 76 pitches, 50 for strikes (65.8%)....... Looie, a notoriously bad hitter, maybe the worst in the history of baseball, even had his best day ever at the plate........ He reached on a walk in the 3rd after taking seven pitches and hit a ball in play in the 4th inning for the first time this season, forcing out a runner going to third........ While his teammates are appreciative of his contribution on the mound, he's a running joke to his teammates when he steps to the plate. Each time he comes to the plate, especially with runners on base, the whole dugout is up on the top steps, either laughing or applauding at every foul ball he hits, for it's usually the only time he makes contact........ All eyes were on him when he finally became a baserunner for the first time this season after he walked to leadoff the 3rd. When Ryan Knox followed with a hard hit fly ball to center, Looie just kept going --- and going --- past second base and halfway to third when the throw from Ray Sadler came in to 2nd baseman Johnny Powers to double up Martinez....... Luis turned, threw his hands upon his helmet and started walking off the basepath onto the middle of the infield, as Powers stepped on the bag........ Martinez returned to the dugout, walking not along the baseline as most legitimate baserunners do, but through the midsection of the diamond, as his teammates laughed. Such is the mood of this ballclub after snapping up a title........ Now the boys can have a little fun, while trying to fatten up their personal statistics, while improving on their game........ Time will tell whether Milwaukee is true to their word and see the core of this unit --- Dave Krynzel, J.J. Hardy, and Corey Hart --- through into the post-season......... Dave is batting .312, and leads the league in stolen bases and triples. His average hasn't wavered out of the .312 - .314 range for the past eight games. J.J. is batting .319 --- 8th best in the league. Since going 3-for-5 in the second game of the season, his average hasn't dropped below .300. Corey is batting .308, tied for 3rd in the league in RBIs, and improving defensively at 3rd base........ Without these three, it's hard to imagine the Stars being able to go very far, unless their replacements are that good or the pitching staff can consistently keep the league at bey, as it has all season....... The pitching staff has the best ERA in the league by a better than a half a run and the bench, not to overlook them, is pinch-hitting .306. Hardy took over for the Stars offensively Friday night, while Luis moved into 2nd place in strikeouts in the league........ With two out in the 3rd after Looie's baserunning escapade, Krynzel beat out a cheap little roller to third for a hit, then reached 2nd on a passed ball.......... Hardy followed with a double down the left field line, driving in the Stars first run....... J.J. singled down the left field line again in the 5th inning, driving in Knox, who led off the frame with a double to left....... Ryan Gripp's thunderous home run to left center over all three billboard levels in the 9th, became the all-important insurance run, sparking a three-run rally....... In the bottom of the inning, Ryan Miller, who's held the Diamond Jaxx to a .188 average this season in eight innings of relief, struggled after Brian Adams had faced eight batters in two innings...... Jason Dubois led off with a screaming single off the glove of Miller, as he threw up his glove in self-defense. Ray Sadler followed with a double off the right field wall, a ball that looked as if it could get over the wall. With Dubois on third and Sadler on second, Jose Velasquez, hitless in 8 at-bats over the last 10 games, placed a ground single through the right side to score Dubois. Miller settled down, retiring the last three batters, two on strikeouts and one on a sacrifice fly. Fireworks after the game drew a good, welcoming crowd of over 5,000, putting the Stars close to an average attendance of the season of over 3,000, which they could break tonight, with a baseball giveaway scheduled........ Pedro Liriano (4-7, 2.67), who has a namesake on the Diamond Jaxx on the disabled list, gets the call for the Stars. Angel Guzman (2-2, 3.21), the Cubs' top pitching prospect, goes for the Diamond Jaxx. The Stars beat the Jaxx, 13-9, in Guzman's last start against Liriano. Guzman was pounded for 8 runs on 8 hits in 3 innings, something I'm sure he hasn't forgotten. Who would? Ben Hendrickson is due back soon from Arizona from forearm soreness and elbow fatigue. He might be assigned to Beloit before he comes back to Huntsville.

Outfielder Dan Boyd will be out six weeks due to some torn tendon damage to his left wrist. The injury occurred when Boyd made a diving catch against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Sunday. ... Starting pitcher Brian Mazone was released from the Brewers organization on Friday. He was 0-7 with an ERA of 9.31 ... High Desert's new hitting coach, Andy Tomberlin, will start his tenure on Monday. Tough luck for Boyd, the 2001 27th round pick. He'll be 25 in September and needs to continue his climb in the system. He seems to be simply a good solid baseball player, but hardly spectacular in any one area. Nothing wrong with that, every organization needs and appreciates those guys. He hasn't officially been placed on the DL to free up a roster spot as of yet, but that likely will be done soon.

  7. Scranton / Wilkes-Barre 6, Indianapolis 4, 10 innings Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians sixth error of the night allowed two runs to score in the 10th inning Friday night as the Scranton Red Barons defeated the Indians 6-4. The Tribe?s miscues established a Victory Field record and led to four unearned runs. Geoff Geary (6-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Scranton to earn the win, and closer Wayne Gomes flirted with danger in the bottom of the 10th before retiring Keith Luuloa with the bases loaded to earn his 10th save of the season. Pete Zoccolillo had a hand in all four of the Indians runs as the team came from behind twice in the first five innings to tie the score. Zoccolillo laced a two-out double down the right field line in the fourth, and then came around to score the Tribe?s first run on a single by Cody McKay. After Scranton plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, Zoccolillo cleared the bases with a three-run double to right in the bottom of the inning to tie the score again. The teams waited out a one hour, sixteen minute rain delay before the game. Game three of the series in Saturday at 6 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game. 8. Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, High Desert 4 Mavs give up three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh to drop to 19 games under .500; little solace in a respectable final score... High Desert Site Game Summary: SAN BERNARDINO, CA - Monday morning, every team in the Cal League will be 0-0. Keep that in mind. The end of the first half of the 2003 season can't come soon enough for the High Desert Mavericks. Friday night, the Mavs fell to the Inland Empire 66ers at Arrowhead Credit Union Park, losing by a final score of 5-4 and marking the team's sixth straight loss. Leading 4-1 in the sixth, Mavs starter Chad Petty started to get shaky with his control. He issued a one-out walk to Shin-Soo Choo. Then with two outs, he hit Ismael Castro and walked Chris Collins to load the bases. He then plunked Eddie Menchaca on the foot to force in a run to make it 4-2. The left-hander gave way to Tony Stavros, who allowed a two-run double to Dustin DeLucchi to tie the game at 4-4. The 66ers took the lead for good at 5-4 as All-Star Greg Jacobs lead off the seventh with a triple and scored on a base hit by Castro. Stavros (1-2) went 2.1 innings and took the loss for the Mavs. The Mavs never threatened the remainder of the night, as Emiliano Fruto (4-6) gained the win in relief. He turned it over to Mike Steele in the ninth, who worked a perfect frame for his league-leading 16th save of the year. Trailing 1-0 in the third, Scott Candelaria pulled his second home run of the year down the left field line. The three-run shot gave the Mavs a 3-1 lead, and for Candelaria, a nine-game hitting streak. They added a run in the sixth as Froilan Villanueva doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ozzie Chavez. Petty pitched well in only his second start as a Maverick, going 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out seven men, while walking two and hitting two, all of which came in the sixth inning, when he began to struggle. The Mavs fall to 19 games under the .500 mark for the first time this year at 24-43. They face the 66ers on Saturday in a double-header at 4:00 (6:00 Central). Chris Saenz (5-5) will face Troy Cate (2-7) in game one, while David Nolasco (1-2) faces Enmanual Ulloa in game two. The Mavs and 66ers will meet in the first half's final game at 6:05 (8:05 Central) on Sunday afternoon. The Mavs will return home to officially open the second half of the 2003 regular season on Monday, June 16th against Lancaster. High Desert Box Score: Chad Petty's first five innings certainly something to build on; will try not to harp on this going forward, but the Santana / Raburn / Ernster starting outfield from Friday night is made up of three true infielders -- there's a big opportunity for a Beloit outfielder there, but no one has stepped up. Three consecutive drafts where corner OF was an afterthought and/or the few guys chosen haven't come through has really caught up with the organization... 13. Beyond the fact that the Stars have clinched the first-half title, here's why you need to get LHP Luis Martinez to Indianapolis soon: This will be Luis' second full season on the 40-man roster, so it's his second "option" year. 2004 will be a season in which Martinez could be bounced between Milwaukee and Indianapolis without being exposed to waivers. Getting Luis to AAA for the second half gets him a nice head start to a mid-year call-up next year. While at it, RHP Matt Childers is in the same stuation and really should be closing in Indy ASAP.

  15. LHP Brian Mazone was released from the High Desert roster. Mazone allowed 97 hits in 59 innings with a 9.31 ERA, highest in all the minors among qualifiers. He never came close to nearing his 2002 season in independent league ball, with stats detailed here on his player profile page: www.brewerfan.net/ViewPla...ayerId=370 Mazone can't say he didn't get a chance. He made 13 starts, and nearly always placed the Mavericks in a deep hole early each game. Considering he was going to be 27 this July, it's a real head-scratcher as to why he retained his starting spot so long, even with seemingly limited options available. No word yet on a corresponding roster move.
  16. Looking at last year's 24 draft signees not including DFE's, I believe all were signed prior to the start of the Pioneer League season except Tom Wilhelmsen. I'm pretty surprised that after that initial push to get 20 signed, things have come to a complete stop. We know the Weeks and Gwynn deals will get done eventually, but six others from the first 15 rounds also remain. Let's go, Doug! Still no word on young 15th rounder HS outfielder Joel Rivera: www.nj.com/search/index.s...journal?sv
  17. Indianapolis Media Notes: Trying to avoid repetition here, posting only "new" stuff... 18. Paraskavedekatriaphobia That, my friends, is the term for the fear of Friday the 13th. We honor Beloit pitching coach Rich Sauveur, # 13 in your program. Is Jeff Robinson still wearing 13 in Huntsville? He was at High Desert. We will overcome this phenomenon as we dig into the Daily Menu : All times Central; pitchers subject to change; tune in for pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed; no audio available for Beloit today... 21. High Desert Site Game Summary: Oaks Do It AgainADELANTO, CA ? The Visalia Oaks knocked off the High Desert Mavericks for a third straight night, completing the three-game sweep in winning 8-2 on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium. Jayson Nix had four hits including his fifth home run to pace the Oaks offense, which pounded out 34 runs and 47 hits in the three-game sweep. Visalia?s Michael Esposito (6-3) went seven strong innings, allowing a seventh inning run for his second straight win. Esposito struck out two and walked just one, while allowing five hits. Mark Ernster doubled and scored High Desert?s first run in the seventh inning, plating on Brian Foster?s RBI groundout. Ernster knocked in the Mavs second run with a sac fly in the eighth, scoring Chris Morris. That would be it for the Mavs offensively, as Alex Serrano would work a 1-2-3 ninth to close down the game. The Oaks got an unearned run in the first off Mavs starter Danny Kolb (3-4), as Tony Miller, who reached on an error, scored on a Nix RBI double. The Oaks took a 2-0 lead with a run in the third, then made it 5-0 with three in the fifth. Corey Slavik?s two-run double was the highlight in the fifth. Nix went deep off Mavs reliever Justin Gordon to give the Oaks a 6-0 lead in the seventh. Slavik knocked in Dan Conway, who walked earlier in the inning for a 7-0 lead. The Oaks finished out the scoring with another run in the ninth off Gordon, as Tony Miller scored on a wild pitch for an 8-2 lead. The Mavs have now dropped five straight overall and are 18 games under .500 at 24-42. They travel to San Bernardino on Friday to open a four-game set against the Inland Empire 66ers at 7:05 (9:05 Central). Chad Petty (0-1) goes to the hill for High Desert on Friday night. 22. Huntsville Site Game Summary: stars.streamtechnologies....newsId=150 David Weiser's Huntsville Update: BREATHE EASY!The Huntsville Stars recovered from the loss of two of their starters and a 5-game losing streak that resulted in them losing what was once a 4½ game lead, to win 12 of their last 19 games and their 10th post-season berth in their 18-year history....... Five of those post-season titles were won in the 1st half, three (1987, 1989,and 1997) were taken in the 2nd half, and two were taken by having the 2nd best W-L percentage in the division, when Chattanooga won both halves in 1992 and Mobile won both halves in 1998......... The Carolina Mudcats clinched their berth with a victory, Wednesday. The Barons did not go gently into that good night easily. They battled the Stars every bit of the way, but two throwing errors by Mitch Wylie were instrumental in the Stars one-run victory....... The first came in the 3rd inning........ It began with a one-out single up the middle by Dave Krynzel, then J.J. Hardy bunted to the 3rd base side. Wylie came in to field it but threw it up the right field line, allowing Krynzel to score and J.J. to scamper to third base........ Corey Hart added to the Stars 2-0 lead with a shallow fly ball to right-center field. Chad Durham made a perfect throw to the plate, but Hardy veered around Maldonado and made a slap tag of home plate with his left hand. The perfect slide at the perfect time. Maldonado never even touched J.J........ An RBI double by Danny Sandoval in the bottom of the 3rd made it 3-1, after leaving runners in scoring position in the first two innings. In the 4th inning, Kade Johnson ripped a one-out double to right-center. After reaching third base on Noochie Varner's fly out to right, Johnson, 90-feet away, scored on Chris Barnwell's two-out, two-strike swinging bunt to the left of the mound...... Once again, Mitch Wylie picked up the ball and threw it down the right field line. In came Johnson to make it 4-1 as Barnwell scooted into second base. The Stars had a chance to add to their lead in the 7th inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Gemoll and Richard Paz, who both wore the golden sombrero tonight, struck out and lined to right respectively to end the inning....... Trying to get some more insurance with a 5-3 lead in the 8th, Kade Johnson hit a soft liner into center for a hit. Noochie then singled to left. Barnwell dropped down a beauty of a sacrifice bunt with two strikes, a key moment in this game, for that put runners on 2nd and 3rd and set up another Stars trademark --- a perfectly executed squeeze bunt, laid down on the 1st base side by Ryan Knox. Johnson was safe at home and Knox reached first........ With the bases loaded, however, Hart hit into a force out at second. At that point, the Stars left 10 men on base through 8 innings. A lucky break for the Stars kept the Barons away from the door, as they scored twice in the 8th....... On a 2-2 fastball, Chad Durham ripped a ball down the left field line, scoring Darron Ingram and Carlos Maldonado, each who reached on a single and double, respectively....... Durham went halfway to second and was headed back to first as the ball coming in was thrown away. But the ball kicked off the wall at a section where there's just a notch there and back into play for Gemoll, otherwise it would have landed in the stands and Durham would have wound up in scoring position......... Durham thought, "Why be denied?" anyway. He tried to steal second with Danny Sandoval at the plate. Kade Johnson made a throw high and offline, but J.J. Hardy wheeled around and tagged Durham on the shoulder on a razor-thin close play that just went the Stars way. Because Mike Adams had thrown 57 pitches in getting the save in Tuesday's 7-4 win, the job went to Matt Childers....... In the 9th, Danny Sandoval singled up the middle on a 3-2 pitch. Juan Piniella popped out to Childers on a sacrifice attempt........ The key to this series for the Stars was getting Ryan Hankins, the Barons' most productive hitter. Hankins, 2-for-15 in this series, hit a soft grounder to Gemoll. Gemoll went to second for the force and Hardy turned the ball back to Gemoll for the double play that ended the game and gave the Stars the victory and a 1st half title........ A group of boosters who drove all the way from Huntsville, stood to cheer as high fives gave way to a mass mugging for the Huntsville nine by the bench. Matt Parker won his 5th straight game........ As the boys come home to play the Diamond Jaxx, Paz is in a 0-for-15 slump, Johnson is 7-for-28 in June, Varner is .353 for June, Barnwell is hitting .333 for June, and Luis Martinez (5-4, 2.51) gets the start Friday night...... Ben Hendrickson is due back soon from Arizona from forearm soreness and elbow fatigue. He might be assigned to Beloit before he comes back to Huntsville....... The Cincinnati Reds signed former Stars pitcher Todd Van Poppel (Stars '91) to a minor league contract and he was assigned to Louisville.
