  1. I would be surprised if they did anything right out of the gate as they did a couple of years ago. They signed 'lesser tier' free agents in Wagner and Kirksey during the tampering period last year as well, so it's not as though they have to be in on the big guys first, which they're obviously unlikely to be regardless. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they sign one of the many solid slot corners before Wednesday.
  2. The start of the 'legal tampering' period today is a nice benefit to a team like Green Bay that is up against the cap- they can get guys 'signed' and know exactly how much restructuring they need to do prior to Wednesday's cap deadline. It'll be interesting to see what they do today and tomorrow....
  3. Because Lafleur's scheme works best with multiple backs that offer different specialties. And this all but guarantees that Jamaal Williams will be playing elsewhere. Dillon is basically Williams' replacement as the power back. Yeah, a Jones/Dillon backfield is a lock, and has the potential to be ultra-productive.
  4. It'll be interesting to see the structure. Reportedly a $13 mil signing bonus, so his cap number is $3.25 from that. If they kept his base low this year, his cap hit now might only be ~$5million. If they backloaded it, it could essentially become a 2-year contract....
  5. And yet, the same amount of championships.
  6. Yeah, if they're going to spend money in FA, it'd be on a CB 2 or 3 or o-lineman, IMO. MAYBE a WR if there's a guy they like that they can get on a modest deal.
  7. Casey had a nice career in SD after leaving the Packers, but had a bad 2020. He’d be an interesting bounce-back candidate, though he’s not young anymore.
  8. I suppose it would depend on the trade/return, but the expected cap hit of, say, a 2nd and a 3rd would provide a negligible decline in their expected cap expense if getting that for their 1st. Packaging their 1st and 2nd to move up to the late teens or so would probably increase the expected cap some, but not by gigantic amount. I think their total cap pool is expected to be $9 million.
  9. Sounds like ~$2.5 million from Turner's straight restructure. Packers should be semi-officially under the cap by ~$500k-$1m with that move. They do need more space that that, obviously. The three elephants in the room (Aaron, Davante, and Z) are likely the last dominos to fall here.
  10. Haven’t seen details yet, but Turner was restructured this morning.
  11. That basically puts them right there. An extension of Z or Adams not only puts them under before the new league year, it also gives them room to do some stuff next week. Extend both, and you've got pretty decent flexibility.. In a lot of ways, this restructure worked out well for both sides- Smith doesn't hit FA this year with a depressed market and following a disappointing year, allowing for a potential rebound and more significant payday when they inevitably cut him next year. In addition to the cap space, the Packers retain a guy that played very well in year one and will probably be better next year than he was this....
  12. I really am glad they found a way to keep Smith. I really do think Pettine’s scheme made him look worse than he is for the first 8 games last year.
  13. Best of luck to him there. That's a nice deal for him to try and earn another contract. The Packers have better options at this point, so I don't think they'd have brought him back even without the cap crunch.
  14. Looking through cuts this week, there really is a lot of potential help there for the Packers at CB if they look to free agency. Peterson and Sherman are the name FAs, though it remains to be seen as to whether their markets will be depressed like most vets or whether they're looking to cash in on who they were vs. who they are now. Of the lesser-ish known guys, Barry would have a lot of familiarity with Troy Hill, who graded out well as a slot/nickel guy last year and seems like a savvy pickup to me. Brian Poole is a good cover guy that I'd hope we look at closely as well.
  15. Start of the league year, March 17th. One week to get the house in order.
  16. Adams himself tweeted something about 'Getting $$' a week or so ago, and that has been interpreted like Z's message that something is in the works. The team has, as is their way, kept negotiations quiet and out of the press beyond that....
  17. Wisconsin's pro day was today, and at first glance it doesn't sound like there was anything of surprise/significance. Not terribly shocking since it's really not a high-profile group of UW guys coming out this year.
  18. Oddly, I'm 99% sure that Brandt has that Colts number completely wrong. Everything I've seen is that their carry-over was $8-9 million.
  19. I suppose it's possible that they couldn't even get that, as a potential reason. If the best offer was a 5th, they'd be better off taking the 3rd, even though it's a year later. Seems unlikely that they wouldn't have been able to get a legit offer for him, though. Usually the easiest explanation is the correct one, which in this case there are two options: that they either have no intention to resign him at all, or that they are working on a bigger deal with him.
  20. If I were in charge, I would majorly go for it this year. I think there will be a lot of value signing free agents that can help us out. Extend Smith, Adams, and get some cap from Arod. Also, I am assuming they might be doing this to sign Aaron Jones which I don't like. Love him as a player but never pay RBs big money. If they end up freeing up enough money with a Z extension or restructure, why wouldn't they have just tagged him? I really think paying him on a 1/$8m contract is palatable, but giving him big Kamara or Cook-like money will be a disaster.
  21. Z with a cryptic tweet this morning. I'd bet an extension is in the works. Assuming so, that'd open up to $12.5 million this year.
  22. Yep. It'll be interesting to see if some will be willing to accept a modest 1-year deal to try and cash in next offseason during better circumstances.
  23. Abrams and Morejon are where I'd start as well, and if that wasn't acceptable to the Padres, I'm not surprised it's dead.
  24. The extra 2.5 million over the somewhat expected $180 will obviously help the Packers. EDIT: With the updated number, the Packers are about $8.5 million over the cap based on their current Top 51. They'll obviously need more than that to A)sign their draft class, and B)do ANYTHING in free agency. But, for the next week the focus is on getting $8.5 million off the books. Logically, Preston Smith is literally $8 million of that. A Davante extension opens up another $9 million or so, which is enough to both get under the cap and to sign the draft class. I'd expect something to happen with both of them this week. More work needs to be done to actually sign anyone else, so it'll be an interesting week...
  25. Newsome seems like one of those guys that ends up being a rock solid, #2-type boundary corner for like 10 seasons. He was previously projected by many as a 2nd rounder, but he may have run himself into the first yesterday.
