  1. I agree wholeheartedly! This is what I've been saying since last offseason when Melvin failed to make a move. Hardy has sucked this year. I find his lousy play to be sort of pathetic. But I find all the schadenfreude from the fan base to be much more pathetic.
  2. SCREW JOB!!!! This is soooooo UGLY!!! And I thought the Seligs were bad. This is worse than anything they pulled. I'm so disgusted by Melvin's SCREW JOB and the general reaction of glee on this board that I'm sick to be a Brewers fan. This is a board that prides itself on upstanding behavior. And you root for this kind of management. I know Hardy didn't help himself much this year, but this is a SCREW JOB! I hope Hardy does get traded. He needs to get out of this swamp! This team is a sham! It is an ugly, backwater, cheap, sham team run by an over-meddlesome investment banker and a mustache-twirling GM who can't evaluate pitching and blames everyone else for it. It is a team that hopes a few well drafted boppers and some worn out mules for pitchers will somehow manage to win just enough games to con the stupid (myself included) fan base into buying tickets for just another year. Well I'm not drunk enough anymore!! This team isn't about winning. It isn't about representing our fair city. It isn't about putting the best team on the field. It never really has been. This move was obviously not designed to help Hardy get going nor engineered for Escobar to get established. This move was solely designed to screw Hardy on behalf of some unknown trading partner. There is no other way around it. I'm so angry and disgusted! I can't believe I bought season tickets! UGLY!
  3. Ah. So Melvin shall giveth and Melvin shall taketh away. Screw job on Hardy. Simple as that. Finding it difficult to like Melvin at all anymore. Yuck.
  4. Except, with Soup, it is quite obvious that performance has nothing to do with a starting job and salary has everything to do with it. So Hardy being in AAA doesn't make sense in the way you say it does.
  5. I don't think there is any proof anyone ever asked him to move to 3rd base. And I don't think there is any proof that Hardy said no to such a move. Everyone who says otherwise seems to be making this up out of whole cloth...
  6. As far as I know, the Brewers have never offered a long-term deal to Hardy. He's been year to year since the beginning. However, Hardy has watched them offer multi-year deals to Hall, Suppan, Riske, Fielder, Braun, Hart, and others. If there was no Escobar, then Hardy would already be on that list. I do believe he has publicly stated his desire to be a long-term Brewer, but has never been offered anything like that. Hardy certainly has not done himself any favors this year though.
  7. Exactly my point. Melvin IS ultimately responsible but seems unwilling to take the blame. He even got into a public spat with Braun to deflect criticism. Melvin is shuffling the blame for a 7-year-long failure onto others - or onto the offseason free-agent pitching market. I don't see it as anybody else's fault.
  8. I agree. I feel like Amazing Grace. I was blind but now I see. The upper management of the Brewers is really not very good at handling its players. All Hardy wanted during the offseason was some sort of good contract to stay with the Brewers. After the previous two seasons, and the way he played down the stretch, I believe Hardy earned a commitment one way or the other. Hardy or Escobar, Melvin? Hardy or Escobar? Melvin chose both or neither. With the need for pitching so obviously dire, Hardy or Escobar should have been traded high and the team should have committed. By standing pat, I think Hardy's mind got messed with. He and Escobar were trading text messages speculating on which would be traded! I think Hardy has been playing defensively all year - playing not to lose rather than playing to win. I think this has to do with how he's been treated. And now this. Melvin sends down Hardy just to add another year of high-priced slavery to his career so he can put off making the decision for another half a year? Just trade Hardy already. Melvin has now poisoned the well.
  9. Nothing truer than that, except to say that it was Doug Melvin who put together the rag-tag rotation. WE, the fans, made our premonitions known that the rag-tag rotation wouldn't hold. Many on this board were right on to say that only signing Looper in the offseason was going to lead to disaster. Rag-tag ain't going to cut it in the NL. It ain't going to cut it next season either. Melvin can't admit his own culpability. He sounds like Ned Yost saying that he doesn't know what he would have done differently. Rag-tag is what we're going to get next season too.
  10. Melvin is blaming 'the league' and 'reality' for his failure to get front line pitching during his tenure here. Melvin's whole 'What should I have done?' thing is disingenuous at best. Melvin has been GM for years - not just last offseason. This year's pitching problems were a result of a years-long Melvin failure to address pitching. Getting CC for a half a season was bold, sure. But look where the team is now. Melvin should stop blaming everything else and just admit that the process of drafting/trading for young upside pitching has not been handled well under his tenure. Just admit it, Doug! Stop giving us excuses!
  11. Geez. I'm positively surprised that there are those of you who seem to wish Hall had just remained at SS. And, if the point to sending JJ down was to extend another year of control over him, then Doug Melvin really is a mustache-twirling villain in the eyes of the player's union. The whole point of sending Hardy down was to give him at-bats in non-crucial game situations. Of course, with the pitching this team has right now, every game is a non-crucial game situation. As for the mismanagement of Hardy, I've long been saying that Melvin should have either locked him up or traded him during the last off-season. Instead, they kept both and didn't fully embrace either. Holding on to both Escobar AND Hardy this year proved to be a lousy decision.
  12. Anybody who says Hardy is a flash in the pan may have missed the last several seasons when Hardy helped the Brewers climb from a mediocre team to a playoff team. Last season, Hardy was the most consistent player we had down the stretch and into the playoffs. He's had a down year. So has half the team. And I think his down year is directly related to the way the Brewers management has dealt with Hardy. Those fans who are so vicious and rabid anti-Hardyists really surprise me. Escobar is not the second coming. In ten years, after another ten seasons under .500, you all will miss Hardy.
  13. Hardy has started to hit in AAA. My prediction is Hardy will be the better shortstop than young Escobar in 2010. Of course, Hardy will be playing for some other team because Melvin screwed up and was forced to sell Hardy low...
  14. Good idea but not likely. http://phoenix.fanster.com/files/2009/01/hellfrozenover.jpg
  15. Not really. Both Jack Z and Doug M did some things absolutely right. But look where the team is right now. This team - even with Braun and Fielder - would have a real hard time beating the 2006 Brewers. Let's just say it is nobody's fault. I can hear Attanasio talking to the ownership group now: "Don't worry. It is nobody's fault the team has regressed so severely. Perhaps next year..."
  16. Suppan's rough outing in AAA doesn't mean his career is over. Did I say that? However, it is unlikely he'll give the staff much relief this year or next if/when he returns. Macha seems to have been less effective than Yost. Perhaps if he drank more coffee... I don't see the team -as currently constituted- coming anywhere close to the playoffs before Prince/Braun are gone - ESPECIALLY if Melvin is fired. But this is a thread about the management. The problem IS the players - or the lack of certain quality players. That is due to the combined weight of years of upper-management decisions. You are right again. That's what happens when the team is driven straight off a cliff.
  17. The Brewers are no longer that respectable either. The way the pitching looks, and given Macha's total inability to motivate his players, I'd say the Brewers end up the bottom of the barrel again. Unless Suppan and Bush return as monsters... Wait. Jeff Suppan in AAA: 3.2 innings pitched, 8 hits, 5 earned runs, 5 BBs, 0 SO, 3 HR, ERA 12.27 Here comes ten more years trying to finish .500
  18. The bottom line. Attendance will be off after this season. That's my guess based on my own feelings about the team right now. That, and the economy. The Brewers' cupboard is bare. It has been proven to be empty of the main ingredient for success - pitching. Trading Hardy and/or Hart and/or Weeks as damaged goods this offseason isn't going to net enough MLB quality pitching to balance with the offense. And Melvin's happy hunting grounds, the scrap heap, isn't going to produce it either. (Gosh, this situation reminds me so much of Melvin's Texas years.) The best way to fix the pitching is drafting. That takes time, patience and luck. The Brewers probably can't do that in time before both Fielder and Braun are gone. The Brewers' window is closing. Heck, it may already be closed and I'm still deluding myself. This is a 'fire Melvin' thread and it has gone 22 pages! I wasn't joking. I think 2019 is optimistic based on the cycle of rebuilding if/once Melvin is fired...
  19. Combine that with the off-season disaster where the Brewers got no premium draft picks for losing CC and Sheets, I'd say the Twins/A's model is pretty much out-the-window. Attanasio must be suffering on so many investment fronts right now that I'd guess the Brewers glory days are behind us until - say - 2019. Unless the scrap heap Gods somehow favor the Brewers this offseason...
  20. Melvin briefly oversaw the Brewers renaissance, and then just as quickly ran the team into the ground. The Brewers are not going anywhere this season or next. Pretty much, it is over for Melvin in Milwaukee - which means the Brewers' playoff chances are pretty much over for another decade or more. When the season is done, I'm thinking of finding a different team or a different sport to follow. And I'm a diehard. Dying for this team is getting harder to do. They just don't reward you for your dedication.
  21. Not a chance. We don't have the arms, remember? Funny how this thread has been resurrected after a three game streak.
  22. Didn't Melvin trade Davis for Claudio Vargas AND Johnny Estrada? Yuck! Melvin is flailing.
  23. The whole thing stinks of top-down meddling. Worse, the top-down meddlers are clearly flailing. I think, after Ned Yost lost his job last year, we should expect this kind of irrational upper managament - making moves just to make them. Hmm... I still don't see the point of making the offense WORSE when it is and has been the pitching all along that needed retooling.
  24. That's what I've been saying for months. It was clear after the disastrous offseason that Melvin didn't really have a plan - other than to 'be patient.' His patience finally ran out last night, apparently. But this is not a plan. This is a move made to show that he CAN make a move. Wow, Doug. Way to go.
  25. And they send down Hardy for not hitting after a four game hit streak? Way to send a message, Doug. I don't think Hardy has been the biggest problem. I think the biggest problem is Doug Melvin.
