  1. Relievers are so volatile from year to year, it seems worth it to try to build one from a number of waiver claims and hope to catch lighting in a bottle with a few rather than overpay in free agency for relievers coming off a flukey great year. If you ask me, Stearns is just looking to take advantage of a market inefficiency. Based on my own guesses and admittedly no research on this one, I'd guess that maybe 5-10% of the reliever market is comprised of dominant, shutdown relievers who are consistent from year to year and can be the difference between a World Series appearance and a World Series title. These relievers are arguably worth the money for that very reason. Most of the other 90-95% are either just guys or specialized type arms, impossible to predict from year to year and not worth lucrative deals to try to find.
  2. The Dodgers needing to reduce debt doesn't take them out of the running for Braun. Don't you think when the Dodgers nearly made the deal for Braun less than 3 months ago, they were aware of what their own financial situation was? If we offered the Dodgers enough to pay half his remaining contract as in your example above, that would effectively give the Dodgers Braun for 4 years and 38 million, which would be very cost effective for them, not cost preventive.
  3. Here's a good look at the best available Rule 5 prospects. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2016-rule-5-draft-preview/
  4. Tying compensation picks to a player only limit a free agent's contract. Not sure why the players union would want to keep that part. They don't. The owners are willing to drop the compensation but want the international draft in exchange, but the union doesn't want the draft.
  5. He'll be 32 next season, isn't very good, and doesn't have any upside to do more than rebound into a back of the rotation starter, best case scenario. I really don't see the point.
  6. Negotiations going along a little more slowly than expected, and reports are a lockout is possible. Sounds like the big sticking point right now is the international draft, which the owners want in exchange for dropping all comp ties to free agents, but the MLBPA is digging in their heels on this.
  7. I'm factually stating what he was in 2016. As of right now it is fact that he is a sub 3.00 ERA pitcher with 5 remaining years of control. Of course a regression is possible at best and likely at worse, so he isn't going to be valued like a typical pitcher with the same numbers, and that's why I said he isn't going to command a top 25 prospect in return. Teams will have reservations, but we also don't NEED to deal him, so they need to give in more than we do if they want him. While Stearns likely can't demand most team's #1 prospect in return, he can and should value him more than the hypothetical 4.00 ERA pitcher that other teams might see him as.
  8. I would take Mendez for sure. A low top 100 isn't going to cut it unless it's supported by some strong secondary pieces. There's no reason for us to expect less than a similar value to what we got for Will Smith. Stearns has most of the leverage here. He doesn't need to aggressively shop Guerra, if the return is underwhelming he should be perfect comfortable risking the chance that Guerra will regress. The upside is that if he doesn't, he'll cost even more to interested teams at this time next season. Teams can be as skeptical of Guerra as they want, and I'm sure they will be, but the fact of the matter is that starting pitching is a huge need for many contending teams, it's a very weak FA class, and it's rare that a sub 3.00 ERA starter with basically a whole career left of cheap control becomes available in trade for less than a top 25 prospect. If teams aren't willing to value Guerra in that way despite their concerns, there's no reason for Stearns to pull the trigger now.
  9. I just don't care to see a guy around with little upside who won't be a part of our future when we have many that will. Frankly, I'd prefer to tender and trade him. But I feel that the fact that he didn't go anywhere in August when it made all the sense in the world tells us his trade value is miniscule.
  10. I agree with most of this except Kirk was still receiving quite a bit of PT when Santana returned and Broxton was starting to emerge. This continued all the way until Kirk got hurt. I don't remember exactly what the split was between playing time among the 3 but it was extremely frustrating and not something I hope to see again this year.
  11. I have no problem with Kirk being the 4th outfielder if he's actually going to be the 4th outfielder. What I do have a problem with is him getting 400 plate appearances again and taking valuable ABs away from Broxton and Santana. I don't want to see Brinson get called up in July and play every other day.
  12. I agree that if Urias was available for Braun and Guerra I think Stearns would and should pull the trigger without hesitation. That would be a tremendous acquisition to get your star ace of the future and worth the price, but more than likely it is a pipe dream. Urias' service time really isn't much of a concern anyway since he didn't accrue a full season in 2016. He still is under club control for 6 more seasons. Regardless, Stearns' rebuild plan has been all about acquiring the most possible talent at every possible level and I can't imagine he would pass on a possible ace who was the #4 overall prospect in baseball before he lost his eligibility simply because his service clock was started last year.
  13. I don't really get that part either. They could have outrighted both plus Scahill, Maldonado and Reed and I wouldn't have lost any sleep. I'm hoping they just plan to try to trade some. Nieuwenhuis is a nice 4th OFer but he steals way, way too many ABs from the young guys.
  14. Sounds like what the Yankees got for Brian McCann. If that's it, I'd wait, though top 10 organizational prospect is pretty broad depending on the team. On ours that's close to a top 100.
  15. You realize he projects as almost a Khris Davis clone, right? I mean, Walker strikes out a bit more, but Khrush isn't far behind at 166, both corner outfield slugging righties...
  16. Walker is an interesting acquisition. It could be a sign that we fully expect Braun to be traded this offseason and are preparing for spring training competition with the corner OF spots. It could mean that the consideration given to non-tendering or trading Carter is legitimate and they feel that Walker can be a cost-effective replacement. Or it could mean absolutely nothing more than us wanting to add depth in the minors with a guy that we liked. We'll find out eventually.
  17. Taylor Williams will be a major surprise to most casual fans, but not to most of us. I'm a little surprised not to see Wang on the list unless it's still incomplete.
  18. This is a great situation for the Brewers to capitalize on a bad free agency crop for starters to get a great return on someone who was worth nothing a few months ago. The best part is the ball is entirely in Stearns' court because Guerra has a ton of cheap control left so there's no rush to deal him if we don't get the offer we want. Still I think there are too many risks to holding on to him so if you can get anything close to an Espinoza type return you need to pull the trigger.
  19. The Reddick signing isn't the worst thing in the world for us if we're interested in trading Braun. It takes a FA outfielder off the market, and definitely solidifies Braun's value as he's obviously a much higher quality player than Reddick. I doubt Braun to the Astros was ever going to happen anyway. I get the feeling that Braun is perfectly content to ride out his career in Milwaukee if he doesn't get his destination of choice. I don't think he's going to agree to go just anywhere simply for our convenience or for the sake of playing for a contender.
  20. Gotta say, I totally agree with Briggs on this one. Any SP that we sign in November is probably not the right decision this offseason. There's no urgency or need to be aggressive in free agency, so it's better to sit back and see how the market develops. Depending on how the rest of the offseason develops, January is the right time to kick the tires on what's out there and possibly bargain shop for an undervalued flyer or reclamation project.
  21. Morton is headed to the Astros. 2 years, 14M plus incentives.
  22. I think its important to note that every post suggesting the 2011 template also stated that signing Turner was another necessary part of the process. You're not going to get to a 96 win Brewer team next year no matter what you do. But following the 2011 template if you added two starters the quality of Greinke and Marcum 2011, and add Turner at 3rd, I think you could realistically expect to be around a 85-87 win Wild Card contender.
  23. Obviously I've mentioned this, but before I get into my plan I'll disclaim it just to clarify that I think it'd be a bad idea. That said, you pretty much need to follow the 2011 template like Reilly said. Make every prospect available, including Arcia, trade for win now pieces to rebuilding clubs. You need to come out of this with at least a borderline ace and another good starter, like 2011. Keep Braun. Outbid the field for Turner. Need to find a 2B or C somewhere too. If we did all this, we could probably contend in 2017, for a Wild Card. Maybe again in 2018 depending on the contracts for the pieces we acquire. Inevitably the bottom would fall back out again at some point and we'd be back in pre-rebuilding status.
