  1. Yeah, I don't think anyone is throwing up their arms and saying 'Arcia can't hit, trade the bum.' It's all about maximizing value within your organization. Now I think this offseason is too early for something like this, but suppose a year from now, Dubon spent a whole year raking in AAA with top notch D at short, and is now a top 40 MLB prospect, and the trade market for Arcia is strong. Well, then that's a conversation you have to at least have. It's just the way of life in MLB, especially for a small market team. Frequent turnover is necessary. Opportunities unexpectedly present themselves. You have to be at least open to anything at any time, and from Stearns' comments, he is. We've had 2 what you could call 'franchise shortstops' before Arcia in Milwaukee in the last 10 years, Hardy and Escobar. Both were traded. And I don't think either was traded because they weren't wanted anymore, and I also bet we don't regret trading either.
  2. It's very possible that Stearns sees Dubon as that elite prospect. Those top 75-150 guys start to get pretty subjective, and scouts might still think he's on the way up. Remember, when we traded Gomez, Hader was seen as the 3rd best piece of that package, and now he's what, a top 30 MLB prospect? I'm still skeptical of Dubon, but if he can produce within 100 points OPS of what he did in AA this year, with good defense, he's going to be a very valuable shortstop. No doubt the return for Smith was flashier, but there's a very good chance this return will be better.
  3. annnnnnnnnnnd you lost me. 3.8 x $8M = $30.4M Cespedes put up 2.9 and 2.3 bWAR the last two seasons and he got $29M/year. Cespedes put up a 6.3 bWAR and 6.7 fWAR in 2015. Braun hasn't posted a fWAR above 3.2 and a bWAR above 3.8 since 2012, and he's also 2 years older. And Cespedes' contract average is 27.5M/year.
  4. Yeah, the 20% cut salary rule doesn't apply to free agents. A lot of players who underperform their contracts would effectively have their careers ended because they'd get no offers if that was the case.
  5. Uh, what? Maybe at this very minute, sure. For their careers, no way.
  6. I just don't see Braun getting 30M a year right now in FA even at a 3.8 WAR. Just too many other variables at play in his past. I think he'd do very well to get 25M a year. If Braun could get 3/30, 4/120, or even 4/100 or 3/75, I don't see why he would have went unclaimed at 4/76.
  7. Have to wonder if there is something about Gioloto that the Nats didn't like. They dangled him out there back in July for Andrew Miller, then again for McCutchen recently, then finally traded him for Eaton. For such a highly rated prospect they seemed almost eager to get rid of him.
  8. Good exercise, but I think it's generally assumed that the Brewers will eat some salary to increase the return. I would guess 5M a year, which would double that 20M to 40M, basically just 2 players of the type you mentioned instead of one.
  9. If there was a nice haul on the table, he'd be gone by now. That said, there's still plenty of time and every team's situation is fluid. Stearns is right to hold on and not rush into a bad deal, though. I'd say if McCutcheon or any other significant outfielder goes to LA first, Braun probably doesn't go anywhere until he has 10/5.
  10. The stats say he is scary bad in CF, where he will play. That's why projections say he will be a 2 plus WAR player. On offense he is a 790 guy. Not bad, but hardly the stuff of let's mortgage our entire farm system. Bad D and sub 800 offense. Sounds like an elite CF to you? For what's it's worth, people seem to think he was also a bad clubhouse guy since he was part of the Sale/LaRoache clique. Nothing available says Eaton is going to be quality CF for the Nationals. Cheap yes. Elite no. Your move. You realize he's only likely to play in CF one year, right? Once Werth is gone to clear a spot in the corner, they probably won't keep him in center. 'Scary bad' is also overstating his struggles in CF too, IMO.
  11. We couldn't have, because Eaton and Braun aren't comparable players. A player is worth whatever a team will give up for him. Just the way it is. We can say til we're blue in the face that Braun should be worth a top 25 and top 50 but if no one will give us that, he's not.
  12. Me too, but given age, defense, and contract, Eaton is probably worth more than Braun in trade. That seems crazy to say but after stepping back and looking at it it's probably true.
  13. I don't know what the White Sox farm was ranked 2 days ago, but it's got to be #1 now.
  14. There will be interest, but that doesn't mean the highest offer will be enough to meet Stearns' asking price.
  15. Not surprisingly given the lack of talk about it, Stearns said on MLB Network today that they just haven't gotten a good enough offer to move Braun.
  16. With that said if the Cubs were hypothetically in the mix I hope Stearns is not a believer in the idea that you can't trade your star to a divisional rival. If the Cubs make a great offer and Braun is amenable to going there we should absolutely pull the trigger.
  17. It's possible that this link from Spotrac is not current. However, it does list the Nationals as a team Braun cannot block a trade to. http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/ryan-braun-485/
  18. Why aren't the Nationals discussed as a potential match? He can't block a trade there, and if they don't land McCutcheon, have to think Braun would be a good alternative. Only issue there is McCutcheon fills the CF gap, Braun doesn't.
  19. I mean...the Brewers traded for Zach Greinke and CC Sabathia not so long ago. Couldn't keep either...... plus, we are living in a different baseball world than 2008-2011. Big market tv deals blew up big market team payrolls. All playoff teams, shy of Cleveland, had a 150 million plus payroll in 2016. Not really. Obviously the pie is bigger now but large market teams with bigger pockets have always had gobs of money to spend versus smaller market teams. This isn't something unique to 2016. In 2015, 4 out of the 10 playoff teams had payrolls in the bottom half of the league, including both World Series teams. Is it a perfectly fair system across the board, no, and it never will be. Obviously teams that have more money to spend have an advantage in free agency and retaining their own. But the current system of 6 years of control (closer to 7 if they are mindful to service time restraints), does give the smaller markets a way to compete if they build their franchise the right way.
  20. Agree with the last sentence, and that's why I'm sure we wanted to sell rather than find out. Couldn't care less than Dubon doesn't play a position of need, though. If he goes to Colorado Springs and hits .300 and plays elite defense at SS, that is a tremendous benefit, and we'll figure out how to deal with it then.
  21. It's really not as bad as it seems right now, IMO. Mark A has the ability to push the payroll well north of 100M if need be. There just isn't a need right now.
  22. Not that it really matters, but I would guess Dubon is probably on the outskirts of most top 100 lists right now and likely to crack a couple in early 2017.
  23. That would be a waste of 2.5M+. Non tendering him would have been better.
  24. I can't get on board with the love for Scooter. Replacement level player two years straight now. I was excited about him when he first came up. Just hasn't worked out IMO. Guys either need to be able to play multiple positions or be very solid at their one position IMO. Scooter fits neither description.
  25. Stearns said himself this morning that they really like versatile players. Gennett is the opposite of versatile.
