  1. Pie actually was pretty good for the Orioles in the second half last year. He might have finally put it together. People are saying Castro > Escobar. I think Vitters is going to flame out. He may have an incredible hit tool, but he has absolutely no patience. You could argue that he should have been swinging at everything as long as he could hit .330, but he struggled in the FSL and still didn't take any walks. I mean, the guy walked 12 times last year.
  2. This isn't exactly winter ball-related, but it's offseason baseball news, so this is probably the best place for it. Pete Fatse is apparently the guinea pig for a product that purports to add bat speed over the course of six weeks; they'll be posting a new video each week so people can monitor his progress. So, if Fatse breaks out next year, you know who to thank.
  3. Sounds like Steve Garrison might have suffered a significant knee injury in the AFL today.

  5. FirstInning.com praising Cain's defense:
  6. BA's Ben Badler on Lucroy: It could actually be a really good thing that Lucroy's not walking in the AFL. Perhaps Lucroy is recognizing that the air is hot and the pitchers tired and that the cost/benefit analysis of expanding his zone has changed in the favor of swinging more freely, and so he is. If so, that would show that while he has the capacity to be patient, he's not simply drawing walks as a function of being passive against lesser pitching.
  7. MiLB.com has a feature on Nelson Cruz's tortuous path to the big leagues: Also, Chris Coste and Kevin Barker were outrighted off the Astros' and Reds' 40-man rosters, respectively, and granted free agency.

  9. It certainly seems that way; in fact, beyond the BABIP, his 2008 and 2009 were remarkably similar rate-wise.
  10. More love for Lucroy from Project Prospect:
  11. We're not the only ones concerned about Taylor Green:
  12. Someone asked Project Prospect's Adam Foster what he thought of Lucroy and Cain, and he said:
  13. Project Prospect:
  14. From Andy at the BBRef blog: It does seem like Hamels is on the outs in Philly due to a combination of bad luck, unrealistic expectations, personality "issues", and the need for a scapegoat. If Philly's so disillusioned with him that they'd put him on the market, he'd be an excellent buy-low candidate for the Brewers to pursue via trade.
  15. Rogers didn't get in the game.
  16. Cain went 3-4 with a walk and three steals (all of second base). Lucroy was 1-4. Braddock pitched a perfect 9th with one K for the save.
  17. New ZiPS projections: Hardy: .258/.314/.419 (94 OPS+) Gomez: .250/.308/.369 (79 OPS+)
  18. Exactly. The money saved only matters if Melvin does something intelligent on it, rather than Suppan 2: Junkball Boogaloo. Besides, ~$10M of that is Cameron's presumed salary for next year (assuming he'd re-sign for about what he was paid this year), something entirely independent of trading J.J. Hardy for Carlos Gomez, given that the Brewers already have another center fielder at least as good as Gomez on the roster in Jody Gerut.
  19. ...then that's what you do.
  20. I wouldn't mind if X was the GM. And given that Melvin has already said he expects Gomez to blossom into Michael Bourn, I think we can say that Melvin is indeed mis-projecting Gomez. Just because one fast hacktastic guy learns to take a few walks doesn't mean they all will--I'm still waiting for Bill Hall to turn into Sammy Sosa.
  21. Jesus. I agree with the following sentiments: Terrible trade; shouldn't have dealt Hardy at all if this is the best they could get in return; this is the beginning of the end for Melvin and the current window of success for the Brewers.
  22. That's a good point, trwi. I was thinking that, since the Brewers don't really want him back, lessening the potential reward for offering him would decrease their willingness to risk getting Graffanino'd, but you're right, it also increases the chances another team would sign him. I guess I'd have to have a lot more GMs on my speed dial than I do now to accurately gauge the market for him and how this truly affects the Brewers' decision.
  23. Lopez is officially a Type B free agent, which I would imagine decreases the chances the Brewers offer him arbitration.
  24. Clancy, none of those guys were 5'7" & 200 lbs.
