  1. Final: @Nashville 8, New Orleans 2 Sounds Extend Win Streak To Four With 8-2 VictoryNashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds earned their fourth straight win on Monday evening, defeating New Orleans by an 8-2 margin at Greer Stadium. It marked the Sounds' third win in three games against the Zephyrs this series. Nashville (36-42) has won 11 of its 15 meetings with New Orleans in 2011. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (3-4) picked up the win as he turned in his team-leading ninth quality start of the year for the Sounds. He held the Z's to two runs (one earned) while scattering seven hits over six innings. It was his third straight winning decision after opening the year with four consecutive losses. Outfielder Caleb Gindl went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the offense. The Nashville bench enjoyed a stellar evening as well, as two pinch-hitters combined for four RBIs on the night. The Sounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against New Orleans left-hander Sean West. After Brandon Boggs led off with a walk, he scored the game's first run when he raced around the bases on Brett Carroll's RBI double to the right-center gap. The visitors grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second with a pair of runs off De La Cruz. Mike Cervanek got things started with a one-out single then moved to second when Sounds shortstop Edwin Maysonet booted an Ozzie Martinez grounder. Tim Torres, who joined the Zephyrs earlier in the day, turned his first Triple-A at-bat of the year into a game-tying RBI single to left. West helped his own cause when he put New Orleans in front by a run as he laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt up the first-base line to plate Martinez. Gindl knotted the score at 2-2 in the third when his two-out RBI double to left brought in Eric Farris, who had opened the frame with a single off West. The Sounds pulled back in front in the sixth, but got only one run across despite having the bases loaded with no outs in the inning. Catcher Wil Nieves led off with a single to center then moved to third when West misfired into right field while attempting to throw out Zelous Wheeler following a sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Jordan Brown ripped a go-ahead single to right to bring in Nieves for a 3-2 Nashville lead. Left-hander Dan Jennings came on for New Orleans and induced a pair of comebackers that resulted in forceouts at the plate. The second of those tappers, off the bat of Carroll, turned into an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play. Nashville broke the game open in the seventh with a four-run outburst against Jennings to extend its advantage to 7-2. Gindl got the scoring started when he continued his solid night by singling home Erick Almonte, who had singled and stole second to kick off the frame. With one out, Nieves and Wheeler each singled to load the bases for pinch-hitter Mike Rivera, who greeted new Z's reliever Frank Mata by smoking a three-run, bases-clearing double to the wall in left-center. The Sounds tacked on an unearned run in the eighth. Carroll struck out to open the inning but reached when catcher [and former Sound!] Vinny Rottino was charged with a passed ball then later scored on a Maysonet groundout to wrap up the evening's scoring. West (2-4) was saddled with the loss for New Orleans after giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits over five-plus frames of work. The Sounds will attempt to wrap up a four-game sweep when the teams conclude their 16-game season series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Tuesday at Greer. Right-hander Josh Butler (4-5, 5.84) will man the bump for the Sounds to face New Orleans right-hander Chris Sampson (5-0, 2.66).Nashville box score De la Cruz struck out just three and walked two, but he kept the ball on the ground very well, to the tune of a 10/2 GO/FO. Gindl started in center field and also walked; hopefully he's kicking it back into gear. Curious night for Taylor Green to be completely absent from the box score. Boggs' two walks give him 33 in 159 plate appearances. Farris stole his eighth base against six caught-stealings; two years ago he was 70/6 in that regard. Nashville play-by-play
  2. Brevard County doubled up by Tampa 6-3Frank Longobardo Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. -- One night after Tyler Thornburg made his Brevard County debut, it was Austin Ross's turn on Monday night. Ross did not fare as well as Thornburg though as the Manatees fell 6-3 to the Tampa Yankees at Space Coast Stadium. Ross went five innings and allowed five runs - three earned - on five hits, while walking one and striking out five. The Yanks got to Ross early as they scored twice in the first, once on a wild pitch and again on a sacrifice fly. Brevard County tied it right up in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly by Brock Kjeldgaard that scored Kentrail Davis and a RBI single by D'Vontrey Richardson that scored Hunter Morris. Ross settled down and held Tampa in both the second and third, but ran into trouble early in the fourth when he gave up a lead-off homer to Kyle Roller as the Yankees took a 3-2 lead. He ran into trouble again in the fifth as the Yankees plated two more runs on three hits to take a 5-2 lead. Jon Pokorny relieved Ross and struck out four in two scoreless innings and Mark Willinsky followed with a scoreless inning of his own. Brevard County cut the deficit to 5-3 in the eighth, thanks to three consecutive singles by Kjeldgaard, Richardson and Shawn Zarraga, with Zarraga's hit bringing home Kjeldgaard. It would stay a 5-3 game though as Juan Sanchez grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat. Manatees pitchers struck out 11 Tampa hitters, but Brevard County's defense committed four errors, which led to three unearned runs. The rubber game of Brevard County's three-game series with Tampa will be on Tuesday at noon. The 'Tees will send Kyle Heckathorn (4-6, 4.39) to the hill in the series finale with the Yankees.
  3. Final: Tampa 6, @Brevard County 3 Brevard County box scoreAustin Ross's debut didn't exactly go swimmingly, but going off his peripherals it should have at least floated: 5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR. Not all hurt Ross, but BC committed four errors tonight, including the 16th each by Hunter Morris and Scooter Gennett, plus a catcher's interference call against Shawn Zarraga (long time no see!) just for variety's sake. Jon Pokorny may have rediscovered last year's form: after a very rough start to the year, he has a 20/4 K/BB in his last 14.2 innings and hasn't been scored upon since the middle of May. Gennett atoned for his error with two hits in five trips, including a double (just his 14th extra-base hit this year but his third in the last two games). D'Vontrey Richardson warmed my black heart with two hits of his own, and the indefatigable Khris Davis reached his customary two times via a single and a walk. Morris drew his 13th walk of the year (he has 292 plate appearances).Brevard County play-by-play The three innings Ross was scored upon: Tampa Top of the 1stAbraham Almonte walks.Walter Ibarra reaches on fielding error by first baseman Hunter Morris. 4. Final: @Carolina 9, Huntsville 2 Huntsville box scoreMichael Bowman got hammered for seven runs on 13 hits in five innings and that was pretty much that, though Roque Mercedes again greatly failed to distinguish himself in relief. The benefit of having someone actually watching the game: Sean Halton went 0-4, but veteran minor league observer Mike Emeigh reports that he "smoked" two balls and also made an "oustanding" play on defense. Lee Haydel had two hits, including a triple (and Emeigh says he also hit another ball hard), plus his 10th steal--getting close to 50%, Lee! Erik Komatsu was 1-3 with a double, a walk, and a runner thrown out at home, and Logan Schafer was 0-4. We like to think that in Schafer and Haydel the Stars have two good center fielders running around out there, but Emeigh wasn't impressed today, nor was he taken with Komatsu's rag arm. Huntsville play-by-play

  6. Final: @DSL Brewers 11, DSL Athletics 4 (8 innings) DSL Brewers box score The game was called after the bottom of the 8th. The big innings were a three-run 2nd and a five-run 4th. Yonki Hernandez set the table well, reaching all four times out of the leadoff spot and scoring three runs. Dionis Hinojosa was also on four times with a triple, single, HBP, and walk. "El Pirata" Orlando Arcia continues to get on base very well, adding a single and a HBP today. Elvis Rubio was a late defensive replacement and went 0-1. Joel Dicent notched another fine start, going five shutout innings with five hits, five strikeouts, no walks, and a hit batter. Marcos Padilla allowed two runs in two innings on three hits but didn't walk a batter and fanned two. 7. Eulogio de la Cruz (stats) actually is moderately interesting as far as starters as Nashville go. Throws in the mid-90s.
  8. 60-day DL players do not count against the 40-man roster, and the Brewers currently have two of those: Saito and Parra. So even if they were both activated and Taylor Green was added, there would still be two empty spots.
  9. I keep forgetting to note it in in the Link Report after I've noted it on Twitter. Champagne problems.
  10. Final: @Nashville 9, New Orleans 2 Nashville Beats New Orleans Again, 9-2Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds hung a 9-2 loss on the New Orleans Zephyrs on Sunday night at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series. Winners of four of its last five overall, Nashville (35-42) has outscored New Orleans, 95-36, in the teams' 14 meetings so far this season, winning 10 of those contests. Nine different players posed a hit in the victory, highlighted by homers from Eric Farris and Mat Gamel. Sounds starter Amaury Rivas (6-7) allowed two runs on eight hits while fanning six in six innings pitched. Rivas has tossed four quality starts in all four of his outings against New Orleans this season, going 4-0 with a 1.73 ERA (5er/26.0ip) and 16 strikeouts. New Orleans plated their first run in the top of the first inning on a bases loaded groundout. Nashville answered back by sending 10 batters to dish and plating four runs in the bottom of the first. New Orleans Tom Koehler committed a fielding error and issued two walks to quickly load the bases. Gamel drove in the first run with an infield groundout followed by a softly hit RBI double by Jordan Brown. Third baseman Zelous Wheeler then hit a two-run single that concluded the Sounds rally at 4-1. The Zephyrs hit consecutive doubles in the top of the fourth inning to score their other run. Chris Aguila led off the frame with a double to left field and scored as Ozzie Martinez nailed a two-bagger to left. The Sounds extended their lead to 6-2 in the next frame. After Mike Rivera singled to center, Farris belted his fourth homer of the season over the left field wall. The two-run shot was his first home run since May 24 at Tacoma. Nashville went ahead at 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh. After consecutive singles by Farris and Brett Carroll, Gamel tattooed a three-run bomb off of Mariano Gomez onto Chestnut Street. Moving Gamel into sole possession of fifth place for homers in the PCL, the blast was his team-leading 18th of the season and put him into a tie with Olmedo Saenz (1994-96) for 10th place in Sounds franchise history. It was the third straight game that Gamel went yard, also a Sounds high for 2011. The Nashville bullpen was dominant on the evening. Mike McClendon pitched a scoreless seventh. Takashi Saito pitched a perfect eighth on eight pitches, allowing a groundout, fly out, and a pop out. Zach Braddock fanned one to end the game in a scoreless ninth. Koehler (5-6) gave up six runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings. The Sounds and Zephyrs continue their series with Monday night's 7:05 pm contest at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (2-4, 4.08) takes the mound against New Orleans left-hander Sean West (2-3, 7.94). Nashville box scoreRivas walked just one and threw 99 pitches and 66 strikes. For the second time in three starts, his ground-ball rate was down (5/4 GO/FO today), but his strikeouts and general effectiveness were way up. Toby watched the game and reports that Rivas threw more breaking balls than in the past but that the quality of them hasn't improved much. Nice to see Gamel, Saito, and Braddock, all of whom could be with the big club soon, have good games. Don Money's oracle told him to bat Caleb Gindl leadoff today, and it worked: Gindl was 0-2 but drew three walks. Taylor Green was 1-4 with a walk. Brandon Boggs, sad about all this promotion talk not including him and Mark Kotsay's general terribleness, had a pinch-hit single. Wheeler is hitting .271/.340/.438 in 15 games with the Sounds this year. Nashville play-by-play
  11. Final: @Brevard County 4, Tampa 3 'Tees top Tampa 4-3Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. -- Scooter Gennett was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and Tyler Thornburg was victorious in his Manatees debut, as Brevard County topped the Tampa Yankees 4-3 on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium in front of 2,366 fans. In the second, the Manatees (2-0 second half, 29-43 overall) got on the board first with a two-run single by Khris Davis that scored both Kentrail Davis and Hunter Morris. Thornburg would allow his only run of the night to the Yankees (2-2, 39-34) in the third when Emerson Landoni scored on Kelvin Castro's two-out single as the 'Tees lead was cut to 2-1. In five innings of work, Thornburg allowed just one run on two hits and one hit by pitch. He struck out six, didn't walk a batter and retired 15 of the 18 Yankees that he faced. Brevard County added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, on a two-out two-run homer by Gennett, to make it a 4-1 game. R.J. Seidel relieved Thornburg and threw a scoreless sixth, but Tampa would get one run back against Adrian Rosario in the seventh on a RBI ground out by Abraham Almonte. Bradley Blanks struck out two in a scoreless eighth and Santo Manzanillo had to work for his ninth save of the year as he allowed a run and let the tying run get to third in the ninth, but the 'Tees held on for a 4-3 win. Gennett's four hits gave him his seventh multi-hit game of June. He is hitting .333 (28-of-84) this month and has reached base safely in 19 of 20 games. The Manatees will look to continue their hot start of the second half in the second game of a three-game set against the Yankees on Monday night. Another pitcher will be making his Brevard County debut as Austin Ross will take the hill for the 'Tees. Ross was 6-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 13 games with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the first half of 2011. The Yankees will counter with Sean Black (4-6, 6.10). Brevard County box scoreAwesome to see Thornburg's dominance continue without missing a beat. Brandon Revels reports that both hits Thornburg allowed were bloops. One of Gennett's other hits was a double--go go Gennett slugging percentage! After an execrable .212/.240/.248 May, he's up to .333/.371/.476 in June. Khris Davis has been good all year, of course, and was 2-3 again today. Kentrail Davis singled once in four trips and stole his 16th base, and Morris doubled. D'Vontrey Richardson was back in the lineup and picked up a hit. Shawn Zarraga hasn't played since the 20th.Brevard County play-by-play The Sea Cows made two outs at second base in the 1st inning: Brevard County Bottom of the 1stScooter Gennett singles on a line drive to center fielder Abraham Almonte. 12. I think you're looking at his BC line. That was his fourth double at Huntsville, plus two triples. Not much power (or patience--only seven walks), to be sure.
  13. Final: Huntsville 10, @Carolina 6 (10 innings) Huntsville box scoreAfter losing in 10 innings yesterday, Huntsville turned the table today. The Stars got a run in the top of the 9th to knot things at six and then exploded for four runs in the 10th. Big days from the prospects atop the order: Lee Haydel was 3-5 with a double and a sac fly, Logan Schafer was 2-6 with a double, and Sean Halton was 2-4 with a double and two sac flies. Add in another from Matt Cline and the Stars tallied four sac flies on the day. The biggest day, though, came from the 7th spot, where Martin Maldonado rang up four hits, including a double. He's now hitting .301/.378/.399 for the Stars to go with his elite defense; I think he's your Brewers backup catcher next year. Andy Gonzalez chipped in with two hits and two walks. Erik Komatsu did not start but entered late and got on base both times he was up, on a single and a walk. As you could guess from his 1st inning that I highlighted earlier, Wily Peralta was not very good at all: 2.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 0 K, 59 pitches, 32 strikes. Though Lucas Luetge allowed two runs in an inning of work, Darren Byrd, Rob Wooten, and Jim Henderson were all impressive out of the bullpen, each throwing at least two innings of shutout ball. Wooten in particular deserves to be highlighted, discovering some of his old dominant stuff with four strikeouts in two frames. 14. Final: Quad Cities 8, @Wisconsin 3, ten innings Rattlers rally in ninth only to fall in tenth to River Bandits Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning on home runs by TJ Mittelstaedt and Tyler Roberts to tie the Quad Cities River Bandits 3-3. But, Quad Cities scored five times in the top of the tenth to defeat Wisconsin 8-3 Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Jonathan Rodriguez put the River Bandits (42-30 overall, 2-1 second half) in front with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. Rodriguez has hit three homers and driven in nine runs against the Rattlers this season. Quad Cities added a run in the top of the fifth. They had runners at the corners and no outs. Ronny Gil grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that let the runner from third score for a 3-0 lead. Wisconsin (39-34, 1-2) got on the board against Quad Cities starting pitcher Trevor Rosenthal in the bottom of the fifth. Chad Stang and Roberts singled to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt by Franklin Romero moved the runners up a base. Nick Shaw sent Stang home with a grounder to short. The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the ninth inning. Hector Corpas came out of the bullpen and became the fourth Quad Cities pitcher of the game. Mittlestaedt cracked an opposite field homer to left on the first pitch that Corpas threw and got the Rattlers to within 3-2. The home run was the seventh of the season for Mittelstaedt. One out later, Roberts cracked his fourth home run of the season and the Rattlers had tied the game 3-3. But, the River Bandits recovered quickly. Rattlers closer Greg Holle tossed a scoreless ninth, but gave up a double to Gil to start the tenth. Holle got the first out, but a wild pitch sent Gil to third and the Rattlers decided to walk Rodriguez to set up a potential inning ending double play. Chris Edmondson spoiled the strategy by lining a 2-2 pitch from Holle down the right field line. Both Gil and Rodriguez scored to put the Bandits up 4-2. Brian Garman relieved Holle and gave up an RBI single to Geoff Klein. Later in the frame, Klein would get caught in a rundown, but he would score when the ball popped free from Garman's glove as he applied the tag. The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch for the 8-3 advantage. Corpas walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the tenth, but retired the next three batters to close out the game. Wisconsin welcomes the Peoria Chiefs to town on Monday night. Matt Miller (2-3, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Matt Loosen (0-0, 0.00) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time at Time Warner Cable field is 7:05pm. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting at 6:45pm. Wisconsin box score Better than going down without a fight. Not to dog Roberts on a day he was quite good, but remember when he drew nine walks in May and I thought he might be adjusting to the MWL? Well, he's walked once in June. Mittelstaedt also walked, and Shaw and Cody Hawn also each had a hit and a walk. Chris Dennis and Mike Walker both went hitless. Del Howell started and allowed three runs in 4.2 innings with poor peripherals. Stosh Wawrzasek worked a scoreless inning of relief with a walk; his strikeout rate has come down significantly in June--he's posted a 3/8 K/BB in seven innings this month. Wisconsin play-by-play

  16. I just heard Fryer's name on the Red Sox broadcast and was shocked.
  17. Dunn sounds like a sleeper, especially if he gets moved to the bullpen, where presumably his fastball would touch the mid-90s.
  18. Final: @DSL Brewers 7, DSL Cardinals 3 DSL Brewers box score#CardenalitosEatBebés. 19-year-old righty Leonard Lorenzo, suspended 50 games last July for steroid use, served his penance and made his first appearance of the year today and turned in a nice start: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 7/1 GO/FO. The Cerveceritos were down 2-0 early but scored two runs each in the 4th, 5th, and 7th to take command of the game. Joan Abreu was on four times with two hits, including a double, and two walks, and Jose Pena collected two hits, including his second homer. Can't keep Orlando Arcia down--he was on twice in five trips with a single and a HBP. Not hit by any pitches was Elvis Rubio, who returned to the lineup and went 0-4. In stark contrast to Arcia, Rubio's pro career has gotten off to a rough start. DSL Brewers play-by-play
  19. Final: Quad Cities 3, @Wisconsin 2 Rattlers can’t rally back on SaturdayChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI – On Friday night, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to erase a 3-2 Quad Cities River Bandits lead for a 4-3 victory. The Rattlers couldn’t summon ninth inning heroics two nights in a row as they fell to the Bandits 3-2 on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Quad Cities starting pitcher Seth Blair picked up the win with an interesting five inning performance. Quad Cities (41-30 overall, 1-1 second half) scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Ronny Gil drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. An RBI grounder by Chris Edmondson sent Gil home with the first run. Jonathan Rodriguez homered later in the inning for a 2-0 lead. The Bandits extended their lead in the fourth. Geoff Klein doubled and a Victor Sanchez single sent him to third base. Michael Swinson grounded into a force play at second that allowed Klein to score for a 3-0 lead. Wisconsin (39-33, 1-1) got on the board against Blair in the bottom of the fourth inning without a hit. Mike Walker and Chris Dennis walked to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt from Chad Stang moved both runners up a base. Tony Pechek’s RBI grounder sent Walker home. Fans observed a fascinating outing by Blair. The Bandits starting pitcher didn’t allow a hit in five innings. He struck out eight, walked seven, and was over 90 pitches when he turned the game over to the Quad Cities bullpen for the bottom of the sixth. Walker broke up the no-hit bid immediately in the sixth. He singled to left off Bandits reliever Angel De Jesus. However, Walker was caught trying to steal second with Dennis at the plate. On the very next pitch, Dennis unloaded on the offering from De Jesus and sent his eighth home run of the season over the Miller High Life Home Run Porch in right. The Rattlers got the tying run to second later in the sixth and also in the seventh inning against De Jesus. But, Wisconsin could not push the tying run across the plate. Dean Kiekhefer retired the Rattlers in order in the eighth and ninth innings to record his first save of the season. The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Del Howell (1-3, 3.82) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. The River Bandits have Trevor Rosenthal (3-7, 3.63) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is 1:05pm. On Sunday, the first 1,000 children aged 12 and under will receive a Webkinz from the Fox Valley Humane Association. Before the game, fans may play catch on the field presented by momslikeme.com. During the game, the Timber Rattlers players will be wearing jerseys and caps based on those of the 1975 Milwaukee Brewers. After the game, players will be available for a post-game autograph session. Also on Sunday, Time Warner Cable subscribers may bring in their bill and receive up to four half priced reserve seat tickets on Sunday. If you can’t make it out to the game, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. While he didn't pitch particularly well, he has to take some consolation in the fact that he's not at Brevard County. Walker was on three times with his hit and two walks, and Nick Shaw drew three free passes. TJ Mittelstaedt took a tough 0-5 with four strikeouts atop the order. Eric Marzec struck out two and walked one in a scoreless inning of relief. 21. Final: @Nashville 4, New Orleans 3 Gamel's Walkoff Blast Caps Sounds' Comeback WinNashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, capped by Mat Gamel's walkoff two-run homer, to record an exciting 4-3 victory over the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs in front of 8,211 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. Trailing 3-0 entering the game's final half-inning, all four Sounds batters who came to the plate in the ninth against New Orleans reliever Frank Mata scored as Nashville (34-42) picked up its seventh last at-bat win of the year and its fourth victory in a game it trailed in the eighth inning or later. Edwin Maysonet led off with a soft single to right and moved to third when Brandon Boggs doubled to right. Brett Carroll followed by plating both runners with a two-run single to center that made it a 4-3 contest. The red-hot Gamel followed by hammering an 0-1 Mata fastball over the home run deck in right-center field for the game-winner, his team-leading 17th home run of the season [audio]. With a 2-for-4 evening, Gamel extended his hitting streak to seven games. He is hitting .423 (11-for-26) over that stretch, the longest active streak by any Sounds player. The late Sounds heroics wiped out a tremendous start by New Orleans right-hander Elih Villanueva, who turned in his best outing of the season but was left with a no-decision for his efforts. He held the Sounds to four hits, didn't walk a batter, and struck out eight in eight scoreless innings of work. Mata (1-5) failed to retire a batter and took the loss after suffering his third blown save of the year for New Orleans. Sounds reliever Zack Segovia (3-3) was the beneficiary of the late rally, earning the win after tossing a scoreless inning. Villanueva opened the scoring and helped his own cause by drilling a one-out solo homer to left off Sounds starter Sam Narron in the top of the third inning. The roundtripper - the first of Villanueva's pro career - was the first by an opposing pitcher against Nashville since Chris Narveson, then with Memphis, took Justin Lehr deep on July 4, 2006. The visitors extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Z's center fielder Josh Kroeger smashed a hanging Narron curveball deep beyond the wall in right for a two-run homer. The blast, his 11th of the year, also plated Matt Dominguez, who preceded Kroeger with a single. Narron, who departed on the short end of a 3-0 deficit but ultimately took a no-decision, worked his fifth quality start of the year for the Sounds, allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings. The teams continue the series with another 6:35 p.m. meeting on Sunday. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (5-7, 4.27) will make the start for the Sounds to face New Orleans right-hander Tom Koehler (5-5, 5.47). Nashville box scoreGamel Gamel Hey! Plus, an unexpected Narv Dog sighting! That homer remains the only one of Narveson's pro career. Taylor Green started a new extra-base hit streak with a double. Caleb Gindl hitless again. Talking about Ryan Braun's and Danny Valencia's 2005 Miami Hurricanes team made me miss Brendan Katin. Justin James worked a perfect 8th with a strikeout. Eric Farris was 1-4. Nashville play-by-play

  23. Rickie's younger brother Jemile making impact with A'sTom Haudricourt/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel In the eighth round of the 2005 draft, the Brewers selected high school second baseman Jemile Weeks, younger brother of Rickie Weeks, who was within days of being called up to begin his career as Milwaukee's second baseman. The Brewers knew the younger Weeks had a scholarship offer from the University of Miami and would be difficult to sign but they took a shot anyway. Instead, Jemile went to college and emerged three years later as a first-round draft pick of the Oakland A's. Imagine what might have happened had Jemile signed with the Brewers. Would he have taken his brother's job? Would the Brewers have committed long-term to Rickie as they did this spring? We'll never know, but suffice to say Jemile has made an immediate impact in Oakland. In fact, he was playing so well after being summoned from the minors June 7 that veteran Mark Ellis did not reclaim the second-base job after coming off the disabled list last week. Entering Saturday, the 24-year-old Jemile had established himself atop Oakland's batting order with a .305 batting average. Ellis, now considered trade bait, said he understood why Weeks did not relinquish the job. "Jemile is playing too well to take him out," Ellis said. "He's provided a spark. You can't take him out. I hope he does well and plays 10 years in Oakland." Jemile, a 5-foot-9 switch-hitter, is making a similar impact with the A's that catcher Buster Posey made across the bay in San Francisco when summoned in the first half of the 2010 season. Beyond that, their backgrounds are similar. Both were first-round picks in '08, with Posey going fifth and Weeks 12th. Both were college stars in Florida, with Posey coming out of Florida State. Both were seen as possible difference-makers, offensively and defensively. Obviously, Weeks can only dream of having the same first-year impact of Posey, who went on to claim rookie of the year honors and help the Giants win the World Series. "I have nerves," said Weeks, who was batting .321 with a .417 on-base percentage at Class AAA Sacramento when summoned. "At the same time, they're exciting nerves, like readiness." Weeks was fortunate to receive counsel and advice along the way from his big brother as well as former A's standout Rickey Henderson. There also has been the leadership and magnanimity of Ellis, who holds no grudges. "My loyalty is obviously to Oakland, but I realize the situation," Ellis said. "Jemile is the future, and we play the same position. It's something I have zero control over, anyway." http://media.jsonline.com/images/ap-giants-athletics-baseball.jpg (AP) [i didn't think Jemile looked much like Rickie when I saw him on TV recently, but in profile there's definitely a resemblance.]
