  1. I do not think there are conclusive arguments on either side of the debate. Hoffman is the least of our team's problems right now. Between the hit and miss offense and the terrible bullpen, Hoffman is seeing less than 1 save opportunity per week. Even in his ineffective state, he should be able to save most of them. Closing is a relatively easy job once you get over the mental part of it. Removing Hoffman is a big deal. The move will be all over ESPN and will be closely scrutinized. To justify the move, management will have to name a deserving replacement. Bullpen by committee obviously isn't going to cut it. Coffey is the only suitable substitute, but he is great at coming in with runners on base in the middle innings and should be left where he is. Therefore, Hoffman basically is closer by default, until he retires or blows several more saves.
  2. I think the "ball and glove" logo is great, but I also like the new uniforms better. As a younger Brewers fan, the old logo has no sentimental value to me. I'm sure many others feel the same. When the Brewers held the old logo vs. new logo night back in '06 or '07, the old logo won, but it was not a landslide. I thought the team's decision to ditch the retro logos on the last "retro Friday" of 2008 was a great move--I was at that game and I was very excited to see the team embrace the present instead of the past. Of course, I have respect for the 1980s teams, but those uniform colors should stay in the past where they belong (especially the baby blue). I am open to the idea of incorporating a "ball and glove" logo with new colors. I know Ajay has been advocating for that change for many years. However, I am not sure that it fits with the rest of the new logos. For that reason, I think it is better to keep the new and old logos separate, except for maybe a permanent sleeve patch. Of course, I have never seen a "professional" version of the old logo with new colors. Maybe I will make one in illustrator tonight and see how it looks.
  3. I would love to see a Sharks/Habs finals as well, but I expect to see Hawks/Pens.
  4. Stealing signs has been an accepted part of baseball throughout its history. The Phillies will gladly pay the penalty and will most certainly come up with a different way to steal signs.
  5. The Jays are near the bottom of the league in attendance, and this was expected to be one of their highest-attended series of the season. If Halladay pitched in that series, it likely would have drawn well over double their average attendance.
  6. I will not lower myself to the point of listening to the Hawk again. It is difficult enough to handle all the cliche catch phrases on ESPN, and I absolutely could not handle 30 different annoying phrases every single night. I do like his hate website though: http://www.heavethehawk.com/
  7. I think it would have been better if the weather was nice, but attendance is lagging a bit this year. I'm sure it will go down from 2009, but the disproportionate amount of summer home games could help even things out. I also find it interesting that the missing fans disappeared from the cheap seats--the terrace and bleachers, so perhaps some of the fair weather fans are going back into hiding.
  8. The silver lining is that very few Brewers fans saw the bad performance tonight. The attendance of 24,365 was the smallest since April 24,2008.
  9. I'm going to the game tonight--buying walk up tickets for the first time in a while. Half price again tonight!
  10. Bench management: Yost > Macha Bullpen management: Macha > Yost We had several long threads on BF.net about Ned's bullpen management. It is also interesting that this thread came up after Macha used great bullpen management today. With Hawkins on the DL, Coffey could have gone back to being the setup man, but instead Macha used him to get an important out early in the game--and Villanueva was saved for the 8th when we had built up a 5-run lead. Plus, the bullen has quietly become very effective this year, so why not take advantage of it?
  11. I think that was the first time Soup made a hitter look silly this year.
  12. I agree that Brian will likely leave at some point. However, they get hundreds of qualitied candidates for that job opening. Most teams choose experience or family name instead of actual knowledge or skill, so it isn't that hard to find an above-average replacement.
  13. Hit tracker has Rickie Weeks' HR at 459 feet (via ESPN box scores). That makes it the 5th longest home run of the 2010 season. Edit: Here is the hit tracker map
  14. Great play by Zaun--he's come a long way since that awful start. After seeing the replay, I agree that Inglett scores on that one at least 90% of the time. Probably a good move to send him, but it is always so frustrating to get guys thrown out at home, especially with less than 2 outs. Hopefully Gallardo is done with 103 pitches.
  15. Gallardo threw too many pitches last time out and he's been laboring tonight. Time to get him out of there.
  16. Lineup slots make no sense. When Gomez is out, move everyone else up a spot. Better to have Braun up with nobody on and one out instead of nobody on and 2 outs.
  17. As with many other aging pitchers, Zito had to reinvent himself when he lost velocity on his fastball. Ben Sheets should pay attention.
  18. That photo makes me much more likely to book tickets on Airtran over other airlines, just for the slight chance that I would get to fly on that plane.
