  1. Since we are in the NL, shouldn't we be voting for the bad players in the AL to give us a better chance at home field advantage in the WS?
  2. I only saw the first show, but... 1. When I was a freshman, I met at least one person with a personality like every single student on the show. 2. The University's decision to not only remove their endorsement from the show but also ban the cameras from showing anywhere on campus except dorm rooms was a self-fulfilling prophecy. While it still would have been an MTV show, at least it would have actually showed the campus and included shots of the students in classrooms and doing things on campus like going to sporting events, meeting people at the terrace, going to clubs and meetings, working on campus jobs, etc. When you are a freshman, your world revolves around the campus and there are only two places that you go off campus on a regular basis: State St. and house parties. Guess what the show ends up depicting... 3. Of course the students are going to rally against it. Almost every upperclassman at this school knows exactly what the real college life is: get up early, go to class, go to work, study, work out, maybe have a few minutes to eat, go to bed late.
  3. I gave up on this one after the 7th and went to do homework. Bad idea.
  4. Back when I won the Major League Moment contest at County Stadium in the late 90s, I really wanted to go on the field with Jeromy Burnitz, but most importantly, I just didn't want to get stuck with Marquis Grissom. Of course, they put me with Grissom in center, but he turned out to be a really nice guy and we had a great view of the stadium that I won't forget.
  5. Wouldn't you rather be a 'wiener' than a loser?
  6. I have Qdoba once/week on average. Simply amazing.
  7. I like the new approaches (minus Hardy). They're still the same team from last year, but they are taking more walks and striking out less while still leading the NL in home runs. You can also still make the argument that the hitting coach has little impact and it is more of a result of them just getting a year older and wiser. Also, they are still 11th in the NL in batting average, 9th in OBP, and 9th in runs scored. The pitching staff's improvement also makes a difference in our improved outlook on the team over the last week. It is crazy that they are 3rd in the NL with a .249 opponent's batting average but 16th in walks and 12th in ERA. I'm glad to be eating my words about them never reaching .500 again this year.
  8. I wanted a full inning of Coffey and Macha only gave me an Espresso.
  9. The Sheets game in Anaheim from maybe 2003 was the only time I really thought that I was about to see a no-hitter. I think he might have had a perfect game going into the 7th, but for sure it was the most dominant he ever was. Vladimir Guerrero broke it up by hitting a single on a curveball that was about 1" above the dirt. The Brewers ended up winning the game in the 17th inning on a double by Scott Podesednik at about 2 AM Milwaukee time.
  10. We're doing an AOS class trip to the advanced storm spotting class next week. I definitely recommend taking the storm spotting class or at least looking at the power point to see the difference between a wall cloud and scud clouds. Scud clouds often look "scarier" than wall clouds but pose no danger. Advance warning though, Jeff Craven (who often does the classes) has the most monotone voice of anyone I have ever heard so bring caffeine.
  11. Modeling small scale wind flows is difficult if not impossible for a situation like a ballpark. Obviously, you know the prevailing wind direction, but when a building gets involved, a large amount of eddies and wave patterns will form downwind of the obstacle. There are ways to do this in wind tunnels but it probably depends strongly on local atmospheric conditions, which would be completely different come summer.
  12. I recommend getting a portable weather radio so that you can follow the storms in your car, you should be able to program it to give warnings for Dane County. I also will emphasize to avoid overpasses in case of a tornado warning. There was a video a few years ago of some TV reporters surviving an F0 tornado by hiding under a highway overpass. The wind is higher under overpasses since it is off the ground. You might be fine for a weak tornado but you will almost certainly be killed if it is a stronger tornado. It is much better to find the lowest area possible and lie flat in the ditch since the wind (and debris) will blow over you. Of course, stay away from trees or anything else that might fall over. The accuracy of tornado warnings has improved dramatically in the last few years, so if there is a warning it is in your best interests to take it seriously. As for lightning, many of the deaths occur after the storm has already passed, so make sure to stay inside for 30 minutes after the last lightning strike. Another sort of interesting fact is that several people in my AOS classes are studying to become meteorologists because they were afraid of storms when they were younger. I was definitely the other type--my face was up against the window during the 100+ mph winds in the May 1998 derecho. We're planning on going storm chasing this summer so I'll post any cool pictures.
  13. If the Citi Field is going to play this way the whole season, the Mets should probably start bunting more frequently.
  14. I just like that the sacrifice bunt resulted in a run, while leaving our best relief pitcher in the game.
  15. Considering their contract with the Brewers, FSN probably made so much money last year that they could survive without any commercials at all this year.
  16. Looks like another warm up late next week. Hopefully that one will end with some severe storms.
  17. This should be the Sharks' year but it's hard to pick against Detroit.
  18. In that case, I'll be optimistic and hope they start 2-0 and never hit .500 in 2010 either.
  19. Although others might not be, I am very concerned. It's not like these are "must-win" games coming up or anything, but this team needs to get going and fast. There are some other divisions where strange teams sit at the top, but not the NL Central. The Cardinals and Cubs are the most talented teams and they are at the top and in position to pull away early from the field. Sure, teams like the Phillies went through a few bad stretches, but there were also the Detroit Tigers who got off to a bad start and by the time they got going, it was too late. I have no doubt that we will get better and not spiral toward 90 losses. However, the Brewers were lucky to get in with 90 wins last year, usually it takes more than that. In addition, we're missing one of the best starters in franchise history (Ben Sheets) and I highly doubt we will outdo the greatest mid-season acquisition of all time this year. The biggest issue is that it isn't like many of the flaws are a big surprise. The offense depends on hitting home runs and strikes out too much. Sure enough, they aren't hitting home runs and as a result, they aren't scoring. The Brewers have a bad defense and sure enough, they are near the league lead in errors. I'm sure Braun, Fielder, and Hardy will wake up. I'm not so sure the pitching and defense will be where it needs to be. They needed to come up with at least 5 more wins than the projections to begin with, now they need more than 10. I was one of those who said "don't worry" last year, and now this year I think there's at least a 50% chance that they won't reach .500 until 0-0 in 2010.
  20. My favorite Turnbow moment is from his bobblehead night. The Brewers scored 4 in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 4. Yost brought in Turnbow for the 9th and he promptly gave up a home run to Paul LoDuca. Right after the home run, Turnbow's head came flying onto the field and landed near Geoff Jenkins. Seeing that made me laugh off that loss.
  21. If the Brewers slump for another week or two, they will probably never see .500 until 2010.
  22. I can't believe that we are this much worse than last season. There is no way this continues. I feel bad if the bad pitching continues, since Bill Castro is likely to take the blame.
  23. The Giants have a strong top end of the rotation. We have Suppan.
