  1. RHP 1. Counsell 2. McGehee (3B) 3. Braun 4. Fielder 5. Hart 6. Cameron 7. Hardy 8. Kendall 9. Pitcher LHP: 1. McGehee (2B) 2. Hardy 3. Braun 4. Fielder 5. Hart 6. Cameron 7. Hall 8. Kendall 9. Pitcher -I hate the Yost/LaRussa lineup shuffle. Unfortunately, Hardy ends up getting shuffled around in this scenario. -The other problem with this lineup is that the three streaky players (Hart, Cameron, Hardy) all bat consecutively -Gamel should go back to AAA on Monday (and he should have been told that all along). -If we aren't going to use Hart's speed, he should bat 5th or lower due to his low OBP
  2. I would like to know how all that rain got in. It couldn't have come from the river or the parking lot. Maybe the roof was open and the rain poured down onto the seating bowl, which then pooled on the field and went down into the tunnels. However, this would conflict with the statement that the clubhouses were spared the worst of the damage.
  3. Missing the first month of the season and spring training should help Mauer, as his body will not wear down as quickly this year. That being said, the guy doesn't seem to even need spring training. The Twins should be in good position to sign him with the new stadium opening, but Jorge Posada can't be the Yankees' catcher forever...
  4. The sun is now out across much of the region, which should act to destabilize things fairly rapidly. Most of the action should be concentrated along and south of I-94 due to the location of the warm front. Flooding is the main threat now with isolated severe thunderstorms. I do not consider tornadoes to be a threat today although you can never rule them out.
  5. Looks like we got off easy. There was some 2.75" hail in Dane County and a few scattered reports of trees down, but no tornadoes. Edit: I just noticed the main story was the rain. Looks like up to 4-5 inches in some areas, especially western Milwaukee County/eastern Waukesha County.
  6. I also heard that one clap of thunder downtown. The whole thing is already evolving into an MCS. The main threat will be straight-line winds for Madison although I'm not ruling out tornadoes for at least another hour.
  7. I'm definitely interested and can make just about any date.
  8. Unfortunately the thunderstorms did not pop as expected in Iowa today despite really good severe parameters. This was due to a stronger than expected "capping inversion" which prevented the storms from firing. This was disappointing since the other severe parameters suggested a good chance of large hail and tornadoes. As of about 9:00 PM, the storms are finally starting to develop near WI/IA border. These should quickly develop and organize into a larger cluster before moving through Wisconsin overnight. I expect a severe thunderstorm watch will be issued for southern WI in the next 1-2 hours. Edit: Tornado watch now in effect for Madison and westward. I will be monitoring this closely. As Hawing noted, severe storms are especially dangerous after dark, so be careful!!!
  9. I would give Gamel a few more weeks, but if he continues to struggle then Hall needs to be playing. Gamel's bad defense already was a contributing factor in one loss this year.
  10. I went to KS/NE/SD/MO twice in the last few weeks storm chasing. Unfortunately we didn't see any tornadoes but we did recover some 4" hail. Today the best tornado threat is in north-central Iowa, I was hoping to go but I have to work. Wisconsin will see mainly a straight line wind threat, as the MCS (thunderstorm cluster) over the SW Wisconsin right now is going to reduce the potential for supercells around here. Tomorrow should be another good tornado day in Iowa/Illinois. As for storm chasing on your own, it is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. We always have someone who stays behind as "base support" and is available to call for updates. In addition, it is useful to have detailed maps of the county roads with someone along who is decent at navigating. I recommend taking a look at the NWS spotter page, there are some good ppt presentations about halfway down the page which are used in the storm spotter training courses. The general idea is to stay to the south of the storm and avoid getting under the mesocyclone and the hail shaft. It pays to have advanced meteorology knowledge to predict more precisely where the best storms will develop, but amateurs can usually use the storm prediction center to get a fairly good idea of where severe storms are likely.
  11. That was the most wild, exciting series in recent memory. I'm not sure how much more of this I can take...it's only June but it feels like September. There are still concerns, as the starting pitchers as still only going 5-6 innings and the bullpen is going to blow up before the end of the season at this pace. However, the resurgence of Hart, Hardy, and to an extent Hall, Kendall, and Cameron is just huge. Another interesting theme to consider is the team's recent road success compared to the bad home stand. It could be a coincidence, but I'm curious if some of our hitters are putting too much pressure on themselves in front of the home fans.
  12. Very interesting. I also enjoyed finding the location of my childhood home in Greenfield, which was in essentially a rural area at this point.
  13. I gave up on this game twice, but I decided to check the score in the 8th and was just in time to see the grand slam. Right when I was as down on the Brewers as I have been the whole year, they pull off a game like this. Hopefully it will be a turning point, but at the very least it is the biggest win of the season to this point.
  14. I can't really blame Sveum for a lineup that had Counsell, Catalanatto, Gamel, McGehee, Gerut, and Kendall all in the same game (last Thursday).
  15. Some of those stories are really sad but really funny at the same time. I imagine we could get together and make a list of similar Brewers moments...I'm thinking of ones that involve Chuckie Carr, Jose Hernandez, Alex Sanchez, Joe Winklesas, etc. At least our story has a happy ending.
  16. I'm guessing Ryan Braun got that idea from you, Ajay. Great work!
  17. Lots of White Sox fans at the game--about the same amount as the last Friday night Cubs game. The ones in our section were just as drunk but much less obnoxious than Cubs fans. One claimed to like the White Sox and the Cubs. I was also surprised at the decision to keep the roof open. I mistakenly showed up in shorts and a light sweater expecting the roof to be closed. It's always a good thing to have the roof open, but maybe the cutoff temperature has been lowered to 65. I will be better prepared for that next time.
  18. Roof Stats from the J/S: This year: closed 22 times (likely 25 by Sunday) 2008: closed 33 times 2007: closed 33 times 2006: closed 49 times (possibly due to repairs) I'm not sure what the exact reason for the closures has been. It has not been a cold spring, as the May temperature in Milwaukee was 1.1 degrees above normal and April was 0.1 degrees below normal. June has been chilly but the Brewers have only played 3 home games so far in June. In my opinion, the problem is that people have gotten used to wearing shorts and t-shirts to games. There is nothing wrong with going to a game wearing pants and a sweater, which would make a 65 degree day comfortable. It seems to me like Wisconsinites complain about the weather far more than anywhere else I have been, so I guess it isn't too much of a surprise that people would prefer to be indoors on a 65 degree day. For this to change, the Brewers would have to announce that they are going to start opening the roof when the weather is colder. They should also post the roof status on brewers.com a few hours before the game.
  19. How about they just open the roof on bright, warm sunny days like today... On a more serious note, the shadows did not reach the field until the bottom of the 9th, which was around 4:30 PM. Most games would have already been over. The Brewers also seemed to do better on offense when the sunlight started to get in the way.
  20. I just want to thank Pedro again for the excellent seats! I took my dad to the game and we stayed for the nearly amazing comeback victory. I'm used to sitting in the terrace so it was a big change to be able to see the expressions on the players' faces--especially Coffey swearing at the umpire behind his back as he was coming out of the game. I will find a way to pay it foward in the future!
  21. LINK Steal: Manny Parra Bust: Mike Jones Unsigned: Hunter Pence Traded/Cut: Dana Eveland Current Key Players: Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, J.J. Hardy, Manny Parra, Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun, Yovani Gallardo Lowdown: The prime example of a good team built through the draft. Seven of Milwaukee's current top 10 in RBIs are homegrown, as is the ace of the rotation.
  22. From Milwaukee NWS: MINIMAL WEAK TORNADO TRAVELED FROM 1.6 WSW MUKWONAGO EASTWARD TO 1.5 MILES EAST OF MUKWONAGO BY 342 PM. NOT A CONTINOUS PATH. TREE DAMAGE NOTED. UNKNOWN IF THERE WAS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. PRELIM RATED AS AN EF0 WITH WINDS OF 65 MPH. MOST LIKELY A RAIN-WRAPPED TORNADO AT TIMES AND DIFFICULT TO SEE. A THANKS IS EXTENDED TO THE MUKWONAGO POLICE FOR THEIR HELP. [/pre]
  23. Unfortunately, I missed the Milwaukee storm because I was out on a storm chasing trip in the central plains. The highlight for us was finding hail that was at least baseball-sized although we didn't see a tornado. I will post some pictures here when I get the chance. Supposedly, a spotter saw a tornado near Union Grove in Racine County today. If it was, it was likely only on the ground for a minute or two. It also might have been a false report--one thing I learned from this trip is that supercells tend to have scary looking clouds all over the place that resemble funnels to the untrained eye.
  24. I just completed the Madison half-marathon last week and plan to do a full next year. I have slowly been building up my milage over a period of a year and a half. Over that time, I have suffered a number of injuries due to overextending myself which has prevented me from attempting a marathon to this point. From this, I have learned: 1. Don't increase your mileage too fast, better to train more shorter runs and only 1 or 2 long runs/week. 2. If something starts to hurt (more than normal soreness), stop right away and take a day off or reduce your milage 3. Develop a stretching routine 4. Try to run on soft surfaces as much as possible 5. It doesn't matter how fast you run or how many walking breaks you take as long as you get the miles in.
