  1. You guys know anything about this guy? Luke Hopkins? Luke Hopkins 1B New Mexico State - Here's some of the awards he's won this year.....WAC Hitter of the Week and National Hitter of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday morning and by the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association), Tuesday afternoon. The conference award is the third of the year for Luke, who was also named National Hitter of the Week from two different sources last week. The guy just crushes it and takes a lot of walks. Every shot is hard line drive and quite a few have gone over the fence. There've been pro scouts there to watch him at the last couple series. Stats - AVG. = .444, HR=12, RBI=53, SLG%=.889, BB=35, OBP=.572, fld%=.986 Is that a great stat line for college baseball? I know he's very good, but are there a number of firstbasemen with those numbers? Anyway, fun to watch this guy bat and if you know anything about him, I'm interested. Was he drafted out of high school? I always hear in the stands that he's likely gone after this year. http://cache.nmn.speedera.net/pics26/200/PM/PMESDGHMCMGXVKB.20060306192652.jpg
  2. Thanks for the extra info. That really helped a lot and it makes sense. Before you explained, I had no idea what that meant. I plan on asking plenty of these questions for a while, all the input is appreciated.
  3. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Huh? Could you explain why OX is used? Same with RS? I just saw something fly over my head.
  4. so are you saying a .500 slg is low? or that the .300 obp is low? I'm guessing you want the numbers to be close to eachother and the .300 OBP is kind of low? And obviously we want both as high as possible. This is exactly the situation I have problems with in a thread that "goes stats." Would .800 OPS be better if it was .380 OBP and .420 SLG? Would that for some reason be incredible OR just the same?
  5. Just to be clear.... I'm the dummie and I'm looking for a little help.
  6. OPS = OBP + SLG Now it makes sense... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif From how I understand: OBP (on base percent) = (H+BB+HBP) / (AB+BB+HBP+Sacrifice Flies) PLUS SLG = (TB/AB) So these two stats seem to overlap in what they count and I don't see that as a big deal b/c this is baseball and not science. So what makes a average/good/great OPS? What do you expect from a leadoff, clean up, 5 spot, 8 spot in the batting order... approximate estimate with a short reasonable explaination would be great!!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif What's more important OBP or the SLG....is one of the two more important for leadoff than clean up (yeah I expect OBP to be #1 for leadoff and SLG to be best for cleanup)? But it can't be so simple so how about a brewer related explaination or super-simple so my brain can get a little bit of what's going on with this thing. Is expected OBP more related to position played rather than spot batted in the lineup? I assume I'm not seeing some of the most important points of OBP so feel free to point them out. Thanks y muchas gracias
  7. Well I'll go first and start a "baseball stats for dummies" thread and whoever feels like sharing some insight will get almost nothing in return http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif , but at least they'll know I appreciate it.
  8. Man I was thinking about starting a thread like this. In the past, I've just listened to games and been satisfied to hear some Uecker jokes during the game. Lately I've really gotten interested in what kind of numbers these guys are putting up, but really have no grasp of what a good OPS is (hell I don't even fully understand the importance of an OPS). Same thing for me on many stats. I can understand the most basic things like K's, avg, RBI's etc...., but some of these numbers I can't visualize... like what does it take to have a great slugging percentage.... and it gets more confusing when people are using multiple stats like OPS, OBP, SLG, and batting average and for some reason I feel like they are all related, but they obviously have huge differences that I don't understand. I'll have to try and make some progress on this summer. Should be getting a real job so I'll have more time to do something fun. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I've already decided on more baseball games attended, watched, better understanding of baseball stats, and first year of fantasy baseball....god I'm glad it's almost summer.
  9. Thanks for that stat page and the LaRussa tip. Looking back a few years Lidge was around 25 holds in '04 and now he's a closer. Just a little tidbit I found interesting. NY Yanks seem to have solid hold guys over the last 5 years....behind a good closer. Maybe my best chance at identifying a good hold guy is to first find who has the best closer....followed by, the pitcher that would be a closer on most other teams..... i.e. Gordon the last couple years. Thanks for the input on this. I think I'm getting sucked into the stats.
  10. Brett - I've looked at that list a couple times. I'm just not able to make sense of it to guess who will have a lot of holds this year. My being a newbie to paying attention to stats is showing today. T. Gordon - was behind a good closer last year, but this year he'll be a closer. Right? Julian Tavarez - had a lot of holds last, does that mean he'll be in the same role this year? Guess I'll just have to pay attention as the season unfolds and see how this works out.
  11. So do you think holds are more affected by management style? For instance, maybe some managers are more prone to bringing in a specific pitcher to face a lefty batter and then take him out right after 1 batter. For some reason I keep thinking JDLR might be the kind of guy, but probably not the best option. The way he came in and K'd Griffey and then faced maybe 1 more batter seems like a hold kind of a guy.
  12. Could someone give me a guess of how they would project holds? I really have no idea how to predict a good "hold guy." Anyone? Definition of Hold - This pitching term was created by the people at USA Today and awards a relief pitcher who preserves the lead by not allowing any runs (earned or unearned) and passes it on to another pitcher for a save opportunity. I guess that would mean a guy who comes in for 1-3 batters right before the closer would be good. How the heck do I get a list of these guys??? I always think of a setup man as someone who pitches at least a couple innings and would expect that they often give up 1 run, "blowing the hold." So what do you guys think? Is this a stat that repeats itself? Or would a good hold pitcher last year likely get a shot for more innings for doing such a good job, maybe a promotion to closer/long relief? Please do discuss and throw your 2 cents in on this one. Hey Russ....how about a hold post on "another baseball blog" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. that guy has to be the worst baserunner I can remember.........yeah I don't follow baseball at all close enough to call him the worst baserunner there is, but the guy is always getting called out
  14. Brewwizard - How do you get the Uecker casts for every game? Does it come with video?
  15. It was a wild game. Joey Vincent scored everytime he was at the plate and got taken out in the 5th inning. Ended up 37-11 NMSU over N. Iowa. I knew there was some stat that Tony Gwynn (i think it was Tony) had over 1.000 b/c he had so many bases and the stat inlcuded walks. So I figured if it was possible to be 2.000, Vincent almost had to do it today w/ 20 total bases in 5 trips to the plate. Thanks for the help.
  16. A guy has 2 AB's and 1 hit, with 3 walks. The AB w/o the hit, he reached on an error. That's a total of 5 plate appearances.. and he scored all 5 times. BTW, it's only the 5th inning of this college game. What stat would that make huge? Is it Slugging pct? or OPS? or something else? What would the numbers be on that?
  17. I can see what you mean w/ Cap. He was kind of "lucky" in some games. Shouldn't Davis be expected to win a few more considering he pitched well and had the opposite "luck" as Cap last year?
  18. Where is the code stuff? I've got a couple stats courses and am learning SAS right now. I'm no good at it, but I'd like to read what you guys are doing with the stats.
  19. I'm don't know much about the draft. Since Jemile is going to Miami, does that mean he will be up for grabs in the draft next year or do the Brewers keep the rights to him for a certain period of time?
  20. Halls batting average is up 15 points in the last week
  21. mark a talking to Uecker if anyone interested to turn on radio
  22. They had the squeeze on so if Moller takes the pitch and gets hit, they send the runner back to 3rd right? Too bad he got wood on it if I'm right.
  23. Add in the 5% for 84-78 and they have a 27.8% of 83-79 OR better
  24. Anybody think we finish below .500 for the season? I'm thinking sweep Reds and lose one to Pirates.
